VoteVets piles on Ryan

| August 12, 2012

This is the lead article at the VoteVets Facebook page;

I read through all of those comments and not one of them mentioned that the Obama Administration does mention veterans in their budget proposal and it mentions them as a means to balance the budget by hiking our health care out-of-pocket costs. So, I’m not sure that Ryan not mentioning veterans in his budget proposal is a bad thing.

It seems to me that a non-partisan political group could mention the downside of supporting a president who has already proved that they’ll screw veterans at every opportunity. Be it suggesting that we buy health insurance to cover our service-connected injuries, warning local police that we’re a terrorist threat, or just generally screwing with our retirement plans.

Like I’ve said, I’m pretty sure that the only reason Romney hasn’t screwed veterans is because he hasn’t had an opportunity yet, but at this juncture, I’m going to have to withhold any support of the known quantity and just hope for the best.

ADDED: So you can shake your head a little longer, this is the next article down;

I think it’s a little disingenuous to set up the discussion up like that when we’ve had countless examples of the President campaigning with actual troops sitting behind him. Not to mention, hiding behind the SEALs’ as cover for his failing policy in Afghanistan, while his administration calls the shooting at Fort Hood “workplace violence” and ignoring his generals’ plea for more troops and support. And then they stand-by while SFC Taylor faced charges of murder.

All 3 of my comments on their page were deleted – and I didn’t even swear once! Seriously, that wasn’t easy.

It’s sickening how delusional those people are.

Old Trooper

Maybe they can ‘splain why they, team Obama, would sue a state over active duty absentee ballots being given 3 extra days and they don’t like it? Does that sound like support? Fuckin partisan political hypocrites.

CI

@OT – The Ohio suit doesn’t address absentee ballots.

NHSparky

Obama wants to gut the military so he can hire 50,000 thugs to work for the IRS.

Funny how I never heard Soltz mention anything like this yet.

And ditto what OT said about disenfranchising military voters, and not just in Ohio.

Frank

Neither Romney or Ryan will be worth a shit – but at least they’re not communists.

Old Trooper

@3: you are correct. It addresses the fact that Ohio gives military members and military family members 3 extra days to vote versus all other Ohio voters.

SGT Ted

Fuck vote vets and the horse they sleep with. THey are an Astro-turf veterans front groufor the DNC plain and simple.

Fred

Pardon me for stating the obvious here.

What do you guys expect from a partisan organization that hides behind the moniker of a veteran’s organization?

And I think it needs to be be pointed out to Soltz that neither Obama or Biden served.

Tony

People, I have about had it with the political gamesmanship with veterans as a voting bloc. When I hear about phony campaigns like Vote Vets or “Got Your 6”, I am inclined to think such campaigns only want us to be portrayed as props, hapless victims, fresh constituents for the social welfare state, I am little else than disgusted.

Fred has it right, we should have exactly little to expectation of partisan groups, masqurading as if they have our best interest at heart.

The last time I went to VotVets or Huffington Post to catch up potlical discourse was … NEVER.

What a joke of a group…. Non Partisan my ass. 100% off all money donated to political campaigns has gone to Democrats for this year. Their sponsor list is a who’s who list of Unions and other left leaning groups.
ROS, I saw your comments before they were deleted… they were tame coming from you. My only comment deleted so far was a response to some moron calling Romney/Ryan “Dumb and Dumber”.
Jonn, Clinton not only got the waiver for ROTC that he ditched, but his name when eligible for the draft did come up but pressure was brought down on the draft board by political connections of a Clinton Uncle.

Common Sense

Romney and Ryan are NOT my dream team, but they are FAR better than the Marxist in Chief we have now.

I’m basically a libertarian so, even though they are being demonized for their budget plans, I don’t think they go far enough. I like Gary Johnson the best for his limited government stance. I also don’t think Ryan is qualified, having no executive or military experience. I was hoping for Allen West or Bobby Jindal.

That said, I’m also a very strong supporter of the military. My grandpa was a doctor during WWII, I was born in Japan while my dad was in the Army, my uncle is a Medal of Honor recipient from the Vietnam War, and my youngest son is currently at tech school in Wichita Falls.

I think our military is the best ever and the way they are used as political pawns makes me sick. I am of the opinion that the Commander in Chief should have military experience. He should know what it’s like to be deployed, to live in harsh conditions, and to be shot at so that he knows exactly what he’s sending the troops in to do and doesn’t do it lightly. I’m thinking of all of the conflicts that are/were none of our business like Libya, Syria, Africa anywhere, Kosovo and Somalia. I also think that ROE should be thrown out the window. If we can’t go in with everything we have and win decisively, then we shouldn’t go in.

Since we have such a small percentage of people serving these days, it will be harder and harder to have politicians who have military experience. Maybe all candidates should go through basic and do a tour before they can run (just wishful thinking).

@12

Just take caution with Presidents having military experience – its a mixed bag. Interestingly the Navy is highly represented since Eisenhower Admin. with JFK, LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Bush 41 all being former Naval officers.

Right meaning Left…

@13-so what you’re saying is “Don’t trust squids” ?
good advice

@4: When the president has to counter folks like you who are allergic to facts (your 50K figure is false…look it up), then it’s almost hopeless.

Gary

The difference between Ryan’s plan and Obama’s plan is that Ryan says everyone will have to bear the cost of saving the country from financial ruin. Obama’s plan calls for those groups he doesn’t see as a favorable voting block must bear the expense and we will still rack up record deficits.

Dave Thul

Whenever someone tells me Romney/Ryan will be bad for veterans, I remind them that one of the first things Obama/Biden tried to do when they came into office was get the VA to charge my private insurance for my service connected disability.

Only a massive and very public outcry got them to back down.

MSG Retired

Just got my Tricare fee increase in the mail yesterday. Going up to $538 and change for the family plan. Its a far cry from the free medical I was promised if I stayed to retirement. As a retiree you cant even get seen at a military installation medical facility.

CI

@19 – Unfortunately that’s not just a trick of the left….as Bachmann attempted in 2011.

Green Thumb

I have always been a Southern Democrat but I will say this…Ryan is not a bad pick.

Devtun

How long before MSM & PETA attack P.Ryan for his hobby of bow hunting elk and catfish noodling (animal cruelty y’know)?

Not a Sage

Funny that the first thing out is what’s going to happen to us as Vets. Problem with that singular “Me” thinking is it’s no different than the idea people living in the projects think when they see Romney or Ryan…someone is going to take away what I have or I’m going to get less. I’m looking at what they may be able to accomplish in the short 4 years down the road. I have adult children and hopefully grandchildren on the way and don’t give a rat’s ass what I have to do to adjust if “change” comes- I’m going to do it and so will a great many stone faced warriors just like me. He’s not going to gut the VA nor is he going to worship at the alter of the peace-nik. Get over your one focus ranting and start doing what we lived for when serving…looking out for our constitution and country. For those of you that have never been to the Balkans, Africa or the former Soviet Bloc countries to witness where we are heading…you are in for a terrible and stressful ride if you vote the current money burners back into office. I love this forum but often see several key “leaders” swaying the talking points to their side of the fence. That’s how our current administration made the trip to the big white buildings. Sit back and watch a few days and you’ll see what I’m alluding to.

SFC Holland

24@ Key leaders? You give them too much credit. They may submit more comments than others, but if you think they are “leading” anything other than the total post counts, you are mistaken.

First time in 80 years that no one has military service on the ticket. That is an issue for me as a veteran. I may be part of a minority but it is no different than any other special interest group and their agenda. My agenda is veteran’s rights, and America honoring the contract I signed. If I reneged, I’d go to jail. If America does it nothing happens. I also disagree with your Balkans/Soviet bloc comment. It is more accurate to point at Turkey/Greece than the Balkans, because the countries you cited never had the money to begin with, and didn’t get into the spiral spending that Greece/Turkey have. The problem we face is entitlement spending and unsustainable debt levels. Money out verses money in. Our countries repsonse to that is ridiculous. We raise a debt level to cure spending. That’s similar to fixing DUI’s by raising the BAC for drivers.

My biggest gripe is going after veterans to save a few million dollars but keeping big ticket items like alternative engines for the F-35 that no one wants for billions of dollars. There is plenty of fat to cut in the budget that doesn’t involve veterans, those who actually served their country and deserve the title of citizen. Everyone agrees that the current system is not sustainable, I am interested in seeing where the next 20-30 years take us. 30 trillion dollar debt ceiling?

ClementC

Yeah, rag on Obama for military health care cuts while you “hope for the best” from the guy who wants to cut *everything* (while giving huge tax cuts to all the scrooge mcducks out there).

Redacted1775

Yeah, let this fraud keep going for another 4 years. He hasn’t finished destroying the country yet. Get a clue pal.

BK

Don’t forget that this administration has done nothing to bring home Arctic Paratrooper Bowe Bergdahl!

CI

@28 – Sorry but that’s simply not true. Several operations have been conducted against the network that is holding Bergdahl.

BK

@24 – if roving gangs of Detroit Hutus start taking machetes to Dearborne Tutsi’s, then I’ll start believing we’re heading in the direction of Africa. There’s a lot going on in that continent, too much to draw neat parallels.
At any rate, I was sanguine about this administration, but then I see what began with the Bush administration has only increased…the burden of responsibility placed upon reserve forces for a margin of the pay. I worry that there’s a nefarious reason for keeping the Guard focused on overseas missions and not their state missions.
All of the other domestic agendas notwithstanding, it’s clear to me that even the days of superficial support for the military post-9/11 are over. Retirees and combat veterans may well have to camp out on the other side of the Anacostia and raise hell. Maybe this time there won’t be a MacArthur jackass to drive the vets off.

Twist

@8: I will go one step further and say that it also needs to be pointed out that not only did Biden never serve, he activly avoided the draft.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

@31 Unfortunately with our “religiously” deferred Republican candidate there’s not much play in that game…. 2 years of religious deferments and 3 years of academic deferments doesn’t do much to engender a sense that Romney had much of a desire to serve either.

None of these 4 Biden, Obama, Ryan, Romney have served much of anything beyond themselves. Romney will be better for the nation than Obama but that is certainly damning with faint praise.
