Another Concealed Carry Success Story
Seems we have another case of a lawful citizen stopping a criminal with one of those “immoral” concealed weapons.
In Salt Lake City, an individual apparently walked into a Smith’s (a regional grocery store chain in the West) and bought a knife. He then went to the store’s foyer, pulled his knife, and began stabbing people. Two people were seriously injured.
A third individual in the area apparently decided not to wait for police to arrive and took matters into his own hands. He pulled his firearm, pointed it directly at the man wielding the knife, and told him to drop his knife or he’d be shot.
The knife-wielder complied. He was subdued by Smiths’ employees and shoppers, and turned over to the police when they arrived.
Concealed carry by law-abiding citizens is a good thing. Because when seconds count – like they did here – your local police are only minutes away.

We should have a serious discussion of knife control in this country. Assault knifes should only be in the hands of soldiers, it is too easy for criminals to get high capacity knifes and injury people.
Should be the response from the left in 3….2….1….
Didn’t something similar to this happen a little while ago? Within the last couple of months? And didn’t the gun owneer do exactly the same thing? Warn the knife-wielder?
…that should be “owner.” Sorry.
Uh, Jeff . . . knives are regulated by Federal law too. In particular, importation/interstate transportation/possession on Federal or Indian land (or within Federal maritime jurisdiction) of switchblade knives is prohibited by Federal law. Many states also have legal prohibition on carrying various other types of knives on one’s person.
@hondo I was being sarcastic using the same statements that came out about guns in the wake of the auoroa shooting but substituting knife where gun would be.
Understand. But giving those fools any argument (even a ludicrous one) for expanding the scope of regulation is IMO a very bad idea. They’re quite likely to grab it and run with it. And they might just be successful.
@7 Hhasn’t there been a knife ban istituted in the UK now, as well as guns? That’s what worries me, Hondo; paranoia knows no limitations. We’ll be eating with rubber spoons and walking around in our socks, if some folks get their way.
@#9 You forgot to add the helmets and knee pads….
This is light on details, but another ‘arsenal’ was just seized and a ‘mentally unstable’ person arrest. Chances are this will further calls for a debate on gun rights:

Can I buy a knife with more than 10 blades?
Don’t laugh, but I think Jonn posted a while back about a couple of dipshits in Boston on their City Council who wanted to enact a knife ban as well.
It’s bad enough I can’t bring a Buck knife into where I work but them’s the rules.
@12 I’ve had people ‘suggest’ I not bring my Leatherman into one of my workplaces because while I was only using the pliers at the time, the sight of the tool itself made people uncomfortable. Meanwhile, they’re surrounded by countless more dangerous things.
Just as there will never be a world without weapons, there will also never be a world without stupid people.
@12, a knife ban? Really? I wonder how they will do things like… chop their food, cut their steak, open those plastic things that EVERYTHING comes in, etc.?
@13, I had the same thing happen at my job. My boss told me that I couldn’t bring it because it had a knife on it and the residents (I work janitorial/maintenance in a nursing home) could get ahold of it and hurt themselves.
First off, it is Airborne tied to my belt. Second, the snap requires you to twist a spring knob to open the case. Third, I don’t like being touched and typically jump when someone does it from behind. Forth, except for two cases (a retired Master Sergeant USA and a former Marine), every resident has arthritis.
So, I don’t bring it and the boss actually locks his keys in his desk. He asks me to open it for him, but I don’t have my leatherman with me… yeah, he backed off on the “ban” later.
So was this considered “heavy weaponry”…you know, like that shit Bill O’Reilly keeps harping on?
#14,
These people are trying to prevent us from eating meat, too.
This was back in April guys.
karlen: Good catch. I indeed missed that, but I don’t feel too bad – it apparently got past Drudge earlier today also. That’s where I saw the link to the article earlier today.
Doesn’t change the main point, though: when seconds count, your local police are only minutes away.
@ 16 CAv guy, they can have my medium well New York Strip when they pry it from my cold, dead, greasy fingers!?
Well, it’s not like April was all that long ago. Really.
Besides, the media generally would not publicise it anyway, so better late than never.
OWB: Yeah, but I still should have noticed that. But since it got by Drudge for a while also, I don’t feel too bad.
@19 “…my medium well New York Strip…”
Now Yat Yas, why would you do that to a defenseless steak?
Unless they cook them differently where you are. A medium well steak here would be saddle leather!
Question… if this was back in April (not debating that it was, mind you) why the helk haven’t they put out details on the perp or hero yet?
Hondo: Saw that, caught the date, and almost posted it anyway. It’s a good story that is STILL worth noting in the current gun climate.
Opted for FB. [shrug]
*sigh*
Not to embarrass you, Hondo, but if you all will refer to the Archived entry, April 2012, entitled “Man Brings Gun to Knife fight” you’ll see this has already been discussed on TAH.
There is a call in the UK to now ban kitchen knives. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4581871.stm
By golly, PN – perhaps that is why there was a familiar ring to the story? 😉
I noticed something familiar about the story, too.
Yes, but I couldn’t track it until karlen gave me the month. Then I was able to find it.
Yeah, I double-checked and it’s indeed the same story. Must have missed it the first time around (or simply not remembered the first one). A similar but new incident after 3 months would be IMO plausible; that just wasn’t the case here.
Mea culpa – but as I said, the fact that it was an old story initially got by Drudge (and a few others), too.
Hey, Hondo! Nothing to regret here – a good story is always a good story which bears repeating. And some of us have gotten to a stage in life where it sometimes takes more than one hearing for it to register. (I’m sticking with that because it covers being one who tells the same stories over and over also…)
PintoNag, the places I go for a steak know my “medium well” is really a “medium rare” left on the grill an extra 30 seconds on each side. Actually my three favorite places know exactly what I like so I don’t even have to order. Reader’s Digest version, about 50 years ago I had a bad experience with a ‘burger that was still pink in the middle. Was sick for days, both ends!?
Don’t worry about it, Hondo, I’ve written posts on the same day that someone else wrote the same story. I’ve also written about phonies who it turned out to be formerly “feel good” stories in the past. We write so much here, it’s hard to keep up with all of it.
Understood, Jonn. Still hate to f-up publicly, though. Nothing to do but acknowledge the fact and move on – plus be a bit more careful in the future.
This is a great case for concealed carry, for sure. Why don’t the anti-gunnists understand that responsible citizens have the right to protect themselves? It’s much better if they’re trained to respond in situations like this, too, but what could have been MUCH worse was stopped by one person with a weapon. Awesome!
