Stephen Ortego LA legislature: Why do we want veterans in LA?
In Louisiana, the legislature debated Governor Bobby Jindall’s education bill. Nick Lorusso, a Republican from New Orleans (I didn’t think such a creature existed) offered an amendment to the bill which would give veterans a chance to get in-state tuition even if they don’t meet the residency requirements to qualify.
So Stephen Ortego rose to question Lorusso about why Louisiana would want to attract veterans to the State. Lurusso answered that “veterans make good citizens”. Ortego responded that “usually veterans come with a lot of their own issues”. When pressed on which issues those were, Ortego says “homeless rates, mental illness rates…especially when they’re coming out of a war…”
This meally-mouthed POS, who has never been in uniform and, guessing from his bio, he has never had contact with a veteran, is 28 years old and apparently already he’s an expert on veterans and their “issues” what with his bright and shiny new pubes.
Can you imagine if he had asked why the state was trying to attract Blacks or Hispanic immigrants to the state because their inherent “issues” might become a burden for the state? Ortego spent his early years building houses in Honduras – so I’m sure he knows exactly what’s good for veterans.
Some people were just created to be called asshats.

I think assclown is more befitting someone who uses both vernacular and a premise that I would expect from Jr High Student Representative…at best.
If anything this gives me hope, if this guy got elected I know I can get elected.
Wow. Just nothing else to add.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Cav.
Yeah, wow covers it pretty well, OWB.
Well of course Stephen Ortego was caught on the spot and had to quickly come up with a convincing lie. The truth of course, is that veterans are overwhelmingly conservatives. He might well have asked… why Louisiana would want to attract conservatives to the State?
Well, maybe his only contact with veterans have been with IVAW and the like.
Oh hell no. This guy has lost his mind. I just sent him a message. I’m right across the river from this clown, and if I hear back from him I’ll let y’all know.
I was born in New Orleans, most of my family is from Rayne. I looked into transferring to a New Orleans area school years ago, but decided against it because of the Post 9/11 GI Bill issues that were going on, and also because of the out of state tuition rates I would have faced. This bill could have done me some good. I could have moved back home sooner, and possibly have found some good employment by now. So I know it could do some good for guys a little younger than me looking to come back to Louisiana. Now this clown makes us out to be pariahs? I want a fucking explanation.

Now I wonder what those rates really are — homelessness and mental illness, as compared between vets and the non-vet populations. Why I bet the answer could be really interesting. Among others, such as education level.

He isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, is he? I seriously doubt if he even knows how veterans do live in Louisiana. Thanks, Cav! Excellent find!
@5: Funny you say that. Here’s an interesting take from a former Army officer in re: military liberal vs. conservative: http://www.johntreed.com/liberal.html
Room temperature Arab semen adorning the face of a passed out sex worker in a Dubai hotel room has more prominence to me that this motherfucker.
His tone was worse than his fucking useless words, sarcastic, undercutting, that wandering … dont you all agree with me… type bullshit made famous by Carter / Clinton’s (all), the future “I know whats best for you Joe American”.
I wish irrational violence was a currency, provided only to those most in need, believe this man is most needy
Just make sure this is used as an ad in is oponents campaign.
Have you ever been to LA? I went there for AIT (Ft Polk) for 11C school…then again for train up for Bosnia…it still sucked. I don’t think anybody with any common sense would move there on purpose, so the turd can kiss my Calif ass.
BorderPundit: You won’t be able to find accurate statistics on those “issues.” Since charities have so much money at stake in inflating the numbers, they count anyone that claims to be a Veteran in their polls, and then “estimate” the numbers out from that.
But remember 90% of statistics are made up anyway.
Now Ortega is saying that the video clip was “taken out of context:”
“Unfortunately, I was the target of a partisan smear. While I’m working to get more services for veterans others are trying to score partisan points with a doctored video. I won’t let them deter me from standing up for veterans.”
See http://thehayride.com/2012/04/if-stephen-ortego-is-the-future-of-the-louisiana-democrat-party/ for more details, including the email to someone who had contacted him, as well as further discussion about his purported support of the bill that proposes in-state rates for all veterans.
He claims that the video was “doctored” also.
Really? YGBSM.
Personally, I’m glad that this scumbag spoke up. Seriously, I am. We *bought* that right of free speech for him in the only way that it can be bought, and he is free to enjoy and employ that right. But you see… we also bought something else just as precious for the people of our country, and paid for it in the same way: THE RIGHT TO VOTE.
Now that he has shown himself for what he is, the exercise of _that_ right will slowly but with absolute certainty grind him into the muck that he came from. Down and down, into the deepest mud and dirt and spittle and the used condoms under your shoe, as you walk down that New Orleans street. Think about what that’s going to be like for a would-be politician. Can you imagine him *ever* being elected so much as dog-catcher from here on? (I wonder if anyone has told him about the broad range of exciting careers in the janitorial field?)
Remember: it ain’t how loud the report is; it’s whether the bullet hit the target.
I’ve talked to a couple of Bro’s from Reserve and La Place, LA and they told me he’s already under fire. I can only hope that the pressure is intense and continuous. They talk about the retards in the AZ state house but at least here they respect veterans.
@11 I’m not sure if you agree with him or not but I don’t. His central thesis is how most members in the military profess to be conservative and act as die hard leftists. For one he notes that they work for the Government and how they rely on the government to provide everything for them. Well for starters working for the government is a strong reason why many personal are conservatives because they know how incompetent policymakers are and how things can become and hey also get to view the governments of many allies and how dysfunctional they are, while performing duties it’s the least the government can do and frankly he almost painted being in the military seem like a Disney ride, how many more stories of men losing limbs coming home with nothing and then the government sais “oh by the way your costs are going up” and there is a big difference between the military and the masses of other jobs…. In the service you can be killed or maimed, it is the risk and sacrifices our members make, perhaps I’m looking too much into it. His main argument is how military members do not concern with results in a conflict or a war and such shrug things off with “ we had good intentions” or “we tried”, he goes on to say how we lost the Vietnam war and when it ended nothing happened…. First off we won every major battle against a ruthless enemy while we had the monstrosity of politics on our backs. The fact of the matter is that whenever something goes wrong or takes longer than normal it’s usually the bureaucrats and politicians who don’t know a damn thing in how to fight and win a war and it is the troops who clean up their mess. I myself am not a veteran, I hope to serve this great country one day when I am finished with College but I know many servicemen( my pop was a firefighter /paramedic for 36 years, a lot of them are veterans) and not one… Read more »
Your absolutely right Jonn, apply any of Mr. Ortega’s adjectives to one of his preferred protected demographics and there would be a shit circus. Sharpton and LA RAZA would be leading the charge for more university slots to be set aside for there peeps’! This though slides by with nary a mention.
Mr. Ortega’s contention is poorly thought out to begin with. Lorusso’s bill was essentionally waving the residency requirement for Veterans, so they could be charged the same rate as locals. Vets tend to be older then your average college student, commit less crime and, tend to be better financed then young students. Isn’t that the kind of individual a university would want to attract?
Lastly veterans are a small and shrinking percentage of the population. They’re the ones you are willing to single out for a possible monetary deduction but no other from the vast host that we subsidise. Asshole!
“My late grandparents (including one of my grandmothers) served our nation in World War II. They instilled in me a deep and abiding respect for our veterans.”
I’m sorry, but am I the only one who finds this argument more insulting than the “but I have a black/gay/Mexican friend” argument? This waste of sperm is my age, 28, so he was likely in high school when 9/11 happened. Instead of enlisting, he went to Jewlane and then decided to chase dollars rather than serve his country. Now he points to the service of his grandparents as if that is supposed to matter to anyone. “I care about you because my grandparents were like you.”
Go fuck yourself, Ortego. Oh, sorry. What I meant to say is that I care about you because the products of my bowel movements are just like you.
“…taken out of context…”? I guess boy wonder doesn’t think anyone can watch the video and glean his intent.
So, boy wonder, don’t try to piss down my back and tell me it’s raining outside.
You deserve to have the shit kicked out of you, you fucking liar…you no more care about veterans than BHO.
Guys and gals, As a few regulars here know,my own weakness for a buzz took over my life. I inevitably ended up in a jackpot. This penchant was present LONG before I joined the Army. While still in withdrawal but before I got a lawyer, a public defender came to visit. He wanted me to blame the military for all my woes. That was (and is) something I couldn’t do, even with a drug-addled brain. Once I got a real lawyer, it became VERY clear that taking responsibility for my own actions was the way to go. It turns out the judge was a vet and cut me slack for NOT blaming the service. Had I listened to the liberal PD knuckle-head I would just NOW be coming up on my first trip to the parole board. Luckily, I have been out for over 5 years. If more judges were vets, no one would pull that BS in court. If no one could safely blame their woes on being a vet, the stereotype would no longer be fed. Well, not as much. It was NOT the military that made me a homeless junkie. It WAS the long forgotten discipline of the service that helped me kick it December 2003 and I have never looked back. I expect no parades for living the way a person is supposed to and only hope to help the still suffering addict. Scumbags like Stephen Ortego get some of their ideas (and prejudices) from all the BS put out by the poseurs. I met many ‘real deal’ vets behind bars. You could tell they were real because they never mentioned it except to other vets and they (we) took responsibility for our actions. The poseurs had the counselors bullsh*tted blind and behaved pretty much like the Facebook SEALs TAH exposes all the time. Sorry for the rant. This touches home for me. I had a drug counselor who told me she only worked with vets. When I asked her why, it took a minute for a response. She told me that TRUE long term (5… Read more »
Let’s see if I understand this correctly for Dems:
In-state tuition for law braking people who entered this country illegaly – OK
In-State tution for person who served our country, defended our freedoms, and protected our way of life, who now wants to further themselves/communities by using an education benifit they earned – BAD
When did we pass into the twilght zone?
-Ish
In the vernacular of my profession, I hope this guy chokes on the next dick he sucks.
and yet another reason to never go to Louisiana except to pee on a tree at JRTC.
So he had grandparents that served in WWII. Sounds like Obama’s campaign commercial saying we should vote for him because his grandfather served in WWII, as opposed to John McCain, who actually served. My grandfather served in WWI, and he did such a bangup job the Army decided they wanted my father for WWII, at age 17. Will that get me elected town dog catcher?
The local Lafayette, La TV station is to interview some veterans about this issue this coming monday. There are some pissed off vets around his neck of the bayou!
Sure, Hack, but if you yourself served, the service of your ancestry is nullified. Apparently.
/sarc
“Some vets??” Eh, Cav – will you send me a link to that, please??
OWB…there is no link yet. Got that skinny from a fellow local Vet. Supposedly there will be scunion brought down on his ass. A term we once used in Nam to mean the worst and most bad-assed shit there is.
Am sure that he will be served exactly what he has earned. Hmm “scunion ala mode?” Or “scunion ala carte.” To be administered at least daily, and more frequently as needed.
KATC interviewed me about this yesterday. They sound bit me to pieces, but the report came out good on tv. They also talked to his stupid ass as well. He did the same old out of context crap. Now he wants to have a town hall with vets. I plan to be there to try to put his no-time-in-life ass in its place. I am sick and tired of the vets have “issues” BS.
Video interview here: http://thehayride.com/2012/05/ortego-gets-a-chance-to-apologize-on-local-tv-for-dumb-statements-on-veterans/ …and article on ‘The Hayride’: Ortego Gets A Chance To Apologize On Local TV For Dumb Statements On Veterans… Think the vets are going to buy it? Nope. We don’t, either. [Let’s not forget that for all his “advocacy” of veterans’ issues Ortego has authored exactly no legislation seeking to address military veterans of any kind. Nothing. He was dead quiet about that subject until he had a chance to make an ass of himself on the floor of the legislature when Lorusso’s bill was about to pass. And now he just didn’t express himself well. Does it occur to Ortego that most veterans don’t consider themselves to be a mental health risk? Does it occur to him that by reducing the policy considerations behind Lorusso’s bill to invite veterans to study at Louisiana colleges with in-state tuition to a question of whether they need more government programs, he’s showing a profound disrespect to them? Probably not. But that’s classic left-wing politics for you – reduce everybody to a statistic and a set of required government expenditures (or a revenue figure) and pontificate accordingly. Ortego says he’s all for helping the veterans and then he says it’s because he had grandparents who were vets, but what he doesn’t do is appreciate, as Lorusso and every other legislator who didn’t make an ass of himself in the debate of that bill did, that the leadership, work ethic, discipline and talent members of the best fighting force the world has ever known can bring to the state. Not once has he recognized that. Instead, he acts like we don’t want vets here because they’re all nutjobs and homeless bums, and then he plays it off like he just wants to give them more free stuff than everybody else and he’s misunderstood. Maybe it’s because Ortego is 27 and he’s not ready for prime time. Or maybe it’s because his arrogance is so profound that the only way to stop him from beclowning himself in the public eye is to get him out of the public eye. We’ll find… Read more »
Ortego has apparently turned off the ability to make comments to his Facebook page.
Cowardly little snot.
