Daily Beast: Bergdahl attempted escape

| December 8, 2011

Tman sends a link to Idaho Press-Tribune which reports from the Daily Beast that Bowe Bergdahl, the only known captive ot the Taliban attempted to escape back in September and was successful for three days;

The story is hard to corroborate – even that Bergdahl was confirmed still alive was news to U.S. Central Command, according to The Daily Beast. But the website appeared confident in its report, based on interviews with “three reliable militant source”who heard the details from fighters present when Bergdahl made the escape attempt.

They’re calling him Sergeant Bergdahl, but I could have sworn he was a PFC when he was first captured more than two years ago. I noticed that his AKO account has expired in his absence.

…the sources say, Bergdahl successfully avoided capture for three days and two nights. The searchers finally found him, weak, exhausted, and nearly naked—he had spent three days without food or water—hiding in a shallow trench he had dug with his own hands and covered with leaves.

I wish him better luck next time.

It has been policy for a time to promote MIA/POW soldiers.

I wish him the best and hope he can return home alive…but I’m still leery of the circumstances of his capture.

I remember when they found Matt Maulpin. it was a real shame.

For a couple of examples, Scott Speicher was promoted from (iirc), LCDR to Captain until he was confirmed killed.

In the IDF, Gilad Shalit was also promoted a number of times during his captivity.

And using Maupin as an example, IIRC, he was a Spc. when he was captured and was a SSG when they found his body.

I agree with you CI on the suspicious circumstances of his capture, CI, but that doesn’t mean he deserves it. Its a fact of life that some people are idiots their whole lives and never suffer any consequences, while others pay a heavy price for a brief moment of stupidity. Just ask that woman who walked into the plane propeller.

@5 – I did din’t say that he deserved to be captured by the QST. I hope he returns safely.

Yahoo is reporting that a Video of missing FBI agent Levison has been made public. Mr. Levison’s disappearance and apparent abduction is a case just as strange as Bergdahl’s capture. Everytime the press reports on Bergdahls case they give a new impausible reason for why he traveled to the Iranian Isalnd of Kish in March of 2007. My first impression was damn a former FBI agent and a FBI agent with a Jewish sounding last name at that travels alone to Iranian Territory can only mean one of two things, either Levison was an idiot or he is a defector. As far as I knew idiots can not become FBI agents. Well perhaps I should reconsider that view. But this video is not enough to make me throw out the idea that he is a defector. The vidoe tape could be disinformation designed by Levison himself designed to confuse the CIA and FBI. Even if he has been captured he should rot where ever it is he is being held. When US citizens travel outside of the US, unless they are working for the US government they should travel at their own risk. The US society does not exsist to babysit world travlers. Not only should the US not pay raansom to free kidnapped Americans it should not send in the Marines to rescue them either. If they get arrested overseas tough luck that is what you get for doing something stupid like traveling to an unsafe country. Shit do people who get arrested in the US get a visit from a governament official to help them GET OUT OF JAIL! If I am ever kidnapped, or arrested overseas, I will refuse any help offered by the US government, or any other governemnt. Help from NGOs will be greatly appreciated. I travel with private insurance. Well I do hope for the best for Mr. Levison maybe if he really is kidnapped his captors will get tired of listening to his sermons and realease him unharmed although such an outcome would logically appear to be unlikely. I will hope for an… Read more »

Team-
There is FAR MORE going on behind all this than the press will ever know. While I cannot divulge all, I can say that this is only the micro-tip of the spear. Bowe has been ‘promoted’ with his peers, even tho he remains in captivity, as do all POW/MIA/missing persons.

Bowe’s official status is ‘missing person, whereabouts unknown’. He’s not listed officially as a POW.

Most importantly, he DID NOT, to the best of anyone’s knowledge, desert his post or ‘run away’. He was taken against his will.

Stay tuned. Stay confident that he is indeed a worthy Soldier. We want him back…

While I was out walking in the evening twilight I think that I figgered out this Levison video. It has come out now because Levison needs to start to build his cover story so when the US occupies Tehran and and every other part of Iran like they soon will and he happens to run in to US soldiers as he surely will he will have a evidence supporting his claim that he was indeed captured and did not defect. Damn I have a hard time experssing my feelings for the man. I wonder what one earth could have compeled him to do something that appears to be so drastic.
When he is found he will no doubt get a heroes return to the US. No one in the govenrment who who has suspicions about his motives would want to spoil the moment by saying them publically out loud. I wonder if he secretly converted to Islam either before or after his dissapearance.
I can not understand why he would want to join the religion of such a bunch of losers. I will stack up one of my U.U. Shao Lin Monks against one of his Sufi Assassins anytime.

@ #9: “Stay tuned. Stay confident that he is indeed a worthy Soldier. We want him back…”

Yes.

#1 “I wish him the best and hope he can return home alive…but I’m still leery of the circumstances of his capture.” My sentiments exactly.

#9 “Most importantly, he DID NOT, to the best of anyone’s knowledge, desert his post or ‘run away’. He was taken against his will.” Come on! He was captured when he wondered off his COP(why? we are exactly sure.). His irresponsible actions led to his capture. Stop making excuses for the shitbird!
