Drones, Bones, and Che
The Occupy (fill in city name) drones likely sport a few Che Guevara t-shirts and that is fitting. It seems Che was executed 44 years ago this week so some celebration of his life is, perhaps, in order.
Big Peace has the facts and this:
Tens of thousands of Cuban youths learned that Che Guevara’s admonitions were more than idle bombast. In Guevara, the hundreds of Soviet KGB and East German STASI “consultants” who flooded Cuba in the early 1960s found an extremely eager acolyte. By the mid-’60s, the crime of a “rocker” lifestyle (blue jeans, long hair, fondness for the Beatles and Stones) or effeminate behavior got thousands of youths yanked out of Cuba’s streets and parks by secret police and dumped in prison camps with “Work Will Make Men Out of You” emblazoned in bold letters above the gate and with machine gunners posted on the watchtowers.
Jonn is our resident Latin America expert, but amidst all the angst (quite legitimate) over our use of aerial drones the closing paragraph of the article struck me as fitting.
One day before his death in Bolivia, Che Guevara — for the first time in his life — finally faced something properly describable as combat. He ordered his guerrilla charges to give no quarter, to fight to their last breaths and to their last bullet. With his men doing exactly what he ordered (fighting and dying to the last bullet), a slightly wounded Che sneaked away from the firefight and surrendered with fully loaded weapons while whimpering to his captors, “Don’t shoot! I’m Che. I’m worth more to you alive than dead!” His Bolivian captors viewed the matter differently. In fact, the following day they adopted a policy that has since become a favorite among many Americans who encounter (so-called) endangered species threatening their families or livestock on their property: “Shoot, shovel, and shut up.”

The part i really don’t understand about Guevara and his acolytes, is why is he worthy of so much adulation? he was a complete and utter failure. In 1959, soon after the Batista government collapsed, Guevara tried to incite Panamanians to start a revolt against the Americans there. It failed on the shores of Colon when the 60 Cuban guerrillas were captured by the Panamanian National Guard as they straggled up on the beach.
When he was finally killed, Guevara was trying to incite a revolution in Bolivia. It was the peasants he was trying to recruit who infored on him to the Bolivian Army. No one was interested in revolution in Bolivia besides Guevara.
Guevara was an utter failure as a revolutionary and a communist, so what is there to idolize about him?
What is there to idolize? Perhaps the losers on the left have nothing to idolize, except failure? After all, judging by what 0 has done to this country, liberalism is a failure. Looking at Europe, socialism is a failure. Checking out the ash-heap of history, communism is a failure. So, they go with what they know, failure…
no the hippie never worried about reality. Che looked good, talked a good line, and more importantly was “young”. All that said, the fact that he was a mass murderer a shitty leader, and a jackass all around SHOULD be something people learn about Che, but no. They all read motorcycle diaries, and watch one of the umpteen million movies about his life, all favorable I might add. with that kind of propaganda STILL going what hope does the truth have?
@1. Che was well educated, accomplished little but wrote and spoke a great deal about correcting perceived wrongs done to the masses, had a dashing image and rebelliousness that appeals primarily to youth, and was not plug ugly as Stalin and Trotsky were. In other words, but for his education, he would fit perfectly with much of the Hollywood idols of today. His is a romantic appeal that is not concerned with facts or reality; rather like Obama’s appeal, I might add.
Damn Doc. I just saw your “I might add” after I posted. Frightening. You can have the exclusive use of phrase hereafter.
its all good Air Cav
Revolutionaries tend to do well when the people listening are uneducated and the current government is corrupt. Look at our current white house and look at the idiot protesters. The only educated ones there are simply there because the either a) think they have can personally profit or b) just finally have someone to listen to their pathetic wants even if their audience doesn’t understandwhat they are saying. The truly ignorant can be swayed easily. I’m thinking of running for prez in a couple of years and I don’t expect any of you guys here to buy any of my b.s. LOL
Che is literally a
Che is to revolution what Jeffery Dahmer is to cooking!
Fortunately both met early (and messy) ends.
#7 Jester you know there is a difference between “Revolution” and mob revolts. 1776 was a revolution. France Bolshaviks, Cuba, China, pretty much the main “revolutions” you hear about and the hippies really love, are mob revolts, that turn into brutal autocracies. Hippies aren’t too good at history it seems.
