What’s wrong in DC?

| August 15, 2008

The Washington Times this morning carries the story that DC’s Southeast residents are more than a little miffed at the rise in homicides in that quarter of the District – and they’re blaming the serial criminal they elected to the City Council;

A recent surge in homicides in Southeast has embattled residents pointing the finger at D.C. Council member Marion Barry, who is seeking re-election in November.

There have been 18 homicides east of the Anacostia River in the past 60 days, including 14 in Mr. Barry’s Ward 8.

The most recent killing in the ward – that of Omar Finney, 22, of Southeast on Monday – prompted resident Joyce Scott to say Mr. Barry has squandered his influence with young people.

“They love Marion Barry,” said Mrs. Scott, founder and president of the community group People United. “They would do anything for him. They would put their guns down for him.”

In fact, they pointed their guns right at Barry a few years ago when three youths robbed him at gun point in his own home in Southeast. They’d do anything for him alright. If you continue reading the story, you’ll get the same sense that you had watching the people of New Orleans begging for help from the government in a situation they created for themselves.

Southeast is a terrible neighborhood, it’s bad place to live, it’s a bad place to drive through. But the residents of Southeast tolerate criminal behavior and then they expect the government to fix the problems in their own families…they refuse to take responsibility for their own shortcomings. And then when the government takes extreme measures to fix the out-of-control problems, they complain about being inconvenienced.

This is the same government who stood by while a mother murdered her four daughters last year, the same government who let a single woman pilfer more than $40 million from the District’s coffers over nine years. The voters send the same incompetent criminals back to their leadership jobs in the city government and expect them to do something for the people…and all they do is get more looting, killing and lies.

What’s wrong with DC? The voters…that’s what wrong. Now, I know one of my resident trolls will call me a racist…even though I haven’t mentioned race (believe me there are a lot of idiot white people in this city, too) and that’s part of the problem, too. Everyone is scared to mention REAL fixes to the problems in DC because everyone is afraid someone is going to get offended.

And that’s why what’s wrong with DC will always continue to be what’s wrong with DC. We have tiptoe around everyone’s sensibilities and never come up with a workable solution.

Southeast DC-and parts of Northeast as well-need to be razed into the ground. I used to live in SE until I moved (evacuated?) back to VA.

Maybe if DHS moves to St. Elizabeths, that will help clean the area up a bit. Course, then Maryland will begin to go to hell…..

“the people of New Orleans begging for help from the government in a situation they created for themselves”

Please explain

What is your workable solution besides bitching about how bad the current one is?

My opinion, for what it’s worth: Southeast-or more accurately, the areas across the river-needs something to revitalize the area. Similar to what Nationals Park is doing for the Navy Yard area. Unfortunately, all handouts of government money in that area seem to do is fuel crime.

I heard some rumblings a while back about building a soccer stadium for DC United in Anacostia at one point. That would be a start. Give the people there something constructive to do, something they can claim as their own, and you’ll clean up the area (or just raise the rent prices and flush out the criminal element out; of course, that will piss off the liberal element in DC).

Frankly Opinionated

Rooney; the people of New Orleans chose not to educate themselves, not to bring in jobs, not to police their own neighborhoods. That they didn’t evacuate when they could have, (given notice 72 hours prior to the landfall), is their own doing. That they didn’t have transportation is their own doing. We Americans are not culpable in their situation. They created what they have.

Frankly Opinionated- unfortunately Jonn is censoring my comments….

Give’em back their 2nd Amendment rights and put the guns in the hands of the law abiding citizens. That should shake it up a bit. A couple of home invaders and car jacks wide up at room temp crime stats will go down.

A quick Google search should show one the the biggest failures of Katrina, Chocolate city mayor naggin. A picture of his yellow submarine fleet is out there. Enough yellow buses to transport all of the ‘dumb’ residents to dry land, drowned. The former governor was ‘told’ (by none other than GWB) to get the people out in plenty of time. Since she was a long time sufferer of BDS she immediately refused to do anything but sit on her fat a**, and now she has plenty of time to set on her fat a**. I support helping those who cannot help themselves but it’s time to stop helping those who will not help themselves, aka D.C. residents.

One more thing about all those people in New Orleans who “could not evacuate”. If they didn’t have cars, then who owned all the flooded cars in the 9th ward in all the hurricane photos?
