2200 Marines deploy to Libyan waters

| March 23, 2011

Old Trooper sends a link from Greenville, NC’s WCTI announcing the deployment of 2200 Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit to Libya;

“In Libya right now they are doing exactly what we need them to do. They are doing what they are told and right now that’s protecting Libyan people against Qadhafi forces,” said Captain Timothy Patrick, a marine with the 26th MEU.

A press release from the 26th MEU reads, in part:

“Protecting the innocent and conducting combined operations are what we are designed to do, our forces are doing both as part of the U.S commitment to protect Libyan citizens.”

Just like pulling a gun, it’s not usually the practice of presidents to deploy Marines without the intent of using them.

Jebus…2200 Marines sitting off Libya. They must have shit-eating grins and perpetual hardons right now.

Dave Thul

Marines don’t invade Arab countries, presidents do.

PintoNag

Anybody around here keepin’ up with how that hope and change stuff is working out? I haven’t heard anything…

(And yes, that was supposed to be sarcastic, in case anyone was wondering.)

God bless our Marines.

RobD

Um did I miss the part where congress authorized all this?

UpNorth

I missed it too, Rob. But then, our power went out in the ice storm last night. That must be why I missed the news.

PN, the “Change” part of that is how President Present and Shrillary keep changing their minds on WTF we’re doing there. The “Hope” part them hoping no one notices.

Old Trooper

Rob, the President has 90 days before congressional approval is needed. That’s the part that everyone keeps missing. I have read the same thing on different blogs, but it seems people don’t remember that part of the equation. Same when we did Grenada, Somalia, etc. When it gets to the point where the President realizes that this is going to go over 90 days in Libya, then he will go grease the wheels in congress. .

2200 Marines? Crap, if we are going to make this fair, the Libyans are going to need to hire some more folks.

Claymore

Teleprompter Jebus says no boots on ground…yeah, right:

#8 Claymore:
“…no boots on the ground…”

Only if our Marines have started going barefoot.

PintoNag

that last post didn’t translate well, Claymore. I was agreeing with your “yeah, right” assessment.

On Saturday our local station did a report on this. The 26th was already in the Med so I knew they would be called upon. They are supposed to be on their way back to Lejeune. The 22nd is scheduled to leave in mid April. I look for them to go sooner. I know a couple guys that will deploy with the 22nd. They are assigned to the Harriers that go with the 22nd. If I see then at church Sunday I find out what is going on if they can tell. To the shores of Tripoli-again?

OldSoldier54

#11 CavRick,
Yeah … I’ve been trippin’ on the possibility of a “…shores of Tripoli…” reenactment for a couple of weeks now.

Not hopin’ for it but … if the opportunity comes for some good old fashioned high velocity Justice for Lockerbie via some of Uncle Sam’s Misguided Children, well, I don’t drink but I’ll be buyin’ for the next Marines I see.

B Woodman

And why couldn’t this have been done sooner when this mess started, so that our US citizens could have been escorted safely out of Libya??

Nothing but a photo op.

B Woodman

Not to denigrate the Marines at all.

But has anyone heard anything about a mission plan, ROE’s, and an exit?

God bless our fighting boys. They’ll need it.

RobD

@ old trooper, thanks man. I knew he could start stuff didn’t know he had a ruined framed yo ask for funding.

RobD

@ old trooper, thanks man. I knew he could start stuff didn’t know he had a time table yo ask for it.

These marines are on a boat in Libyan “waters”. We all knew the US military had a boat in Libyan waters. Nothing to get excited about here.
