Juan Williams fired at NPR because Muslims on planes make him nervous

| October 21, 2010

I picked this up at Ace of Spades this morning written by DrewM. Apparently, Juan Williams admitted to Bill O’Reilly that Muslims on planes make him nervous and NPR fired him for saying that out loud because it doesn’t fit their “editorial standards and practices”.

You can search this blog for things I’ve said about Juan Williams. He I met one day and had a short conversation in the middle of Union Station in DC. He and my wife were both born in Panama, although on different sides of the isthmus, and we talked about that, but he was a real nice guy. One of his books, “Eye on the Prize” was a text in my History of Civil Rights class was the one bright spot of the semester, since the rest of class was about bashing white males (I was the only one in the class) and listening to a bunch of over-stimulated, post-menopausal hippies discuss which of them wanted to boink Bobby Seal most.

But anyway, I don’t think anyone can call into question Juan Williams’ standards and practices. Both sides have their problems with him which pretty much tells me that he’s pretty fair. I think NPR needs to take a look at themselves – I’m sure we can all find reasons to question their “standards and practices”.

Jonn, always found him to be a NPR person who was reasonable. Yep, there are times I’ve yelled at my tv after something he’s said, but I can say that for any of the political persuasions. Don’t forget, NPR doesn’t claim to be “fair and balanced”…..and never will be.

Jonn,
Used to listen to NPR every single day of my life in college. I never loved Juan, but you get to know the enemy and unfortunately for Juan- he has just seen the inside and how they eat their own and display a total lack of tolerance for an opinion. UFB, in my mind. I’d sue…heh.

Mara Liasson check yer six! They will be coming after you shortly. NPR has been looking for a reason, just or not, to let Juan Williams and Mira Liasson go. I don’t think it was as much what he said as it was what network he said it on. I believe NPR tried to make a big deal, a little while back, about Mira being a contributor on Fox News.

This will only make more people open their eyes to all the PC that has engulfed our society. Which will be a good thing. As much as I hate what they did to Juan, it is always a good sign when the other side begins to kill off their own.

Tolerance?

I loath the fact that tax dollars go to support this mouthpiece of the left they call “NPR”. It is just as biased, if not moreso, than the regular media. What makes them worse, is that they all think they are so very smart and are part of the elitist class of buffoons.

National Proletariat Radio has just become National Politically-Correct Radio. Hugo would be so proud!

I like Juan Williams because I have found him to be a rare bird: An honestly objective reporter. He is well-spoken, and well-read, and that transcends his work.

As others have said, I don’t agree with a lot of his statements, but I found him fair and reasonable.

The Commissars at NPR have really stepped on their collective cranks this time. I hope he sues the bejeebus outta them.

And yea….. I’d also vote to terminate all tax money to that nest of leftist vipers. Let them find their own funding.

Love Juan. NPR… not so much.

This why you can’t trust liberals. When they say they want “a national dialogue on race” or some such lofty endeavor, watch out.

They’re setting you up.

My god! A person can’t even talk about what he is afraid of? Is being afraid now a crime too!

I can’t listen to NPR; it does terrible things to my blood pressure. I feel sorry for this man, though. This kind of treatment is never pleasant, no matter which side of the fence you’re on.

Minuteman26

Time to stop all public funding to NPR. Waste of taxpayer money as they no serve no useful purpose. Williams will be better for it in the long run.

Most of you already know that Juan Williams has been hired by the Fox News Channel. It is just like the people Obama told us not to listen to and they have done very well ever since. Since he was fired, I am guessing he can talk about his former employer without any fear of a contract violation, since the contract has been broken by the employer.

I am anxious to see how his being with Fox News will work out. Is it possible that someday Fox News will do a story on the propaganda media and what happens if you don’t follow their propaganda guidelines?

Maybe Mr. Williams didn’t have to worry about being blown up on a plane because the propaganda media tells the terrorists which planes their people will be on so the terrorists know which plane NOT to try to blow up. It wouldn’t surprise me. You don’t want to blow up your own people, and we all know who’s side the propaganda media is on.

If Juan wants to really be nervous, he should come to Atlanta during DragonCon…you’ve never experienced real nervousness until you’re standing in line at Wendy’s next to a 300lb chick dressed as a Klingon ordering a #3 combo with a Frosty.

Laughing Wolf

Claymore, I thought you said you weren’t going to say anything about my weight, or my costume…

*G* DragonCon can be interesting, want to get back down one day, been too long. Many good memories there, but personal favorite was pissing off two Navy intel types. I gave a panel on spying on the Soviets (this was when Clancy and Bond were guests) and came in in a trench coat, fedora, doing an exagerated sneak, and went “Psssst. Snowflake?” Then stood up and said that if you thought that was how it was done, had a bridge deal for you. The two got up, mad, and stalked out. Saw them sneak back in later though…

Claymore

My last visit to DragonCon was 1985 where I met Dave Arneson and Gary Gygax…names that will only resonate with kids who sat around the kitchen table on Friday night, eating pizza, pretending to kill goblins while rolling weird shaped dice. I bet Juan would have been nervous with our cultural dress as well.

Old Tanker

Claymore, you’re gonna make me get out my DM Guide and Monster Manual with talk like that……RIP Gary…

Is this DragonCon anything like WisCon that’s been talked about recently?

The irony of this whole thing is that Juan Williams and Fox News Channel come out looking golden, while NPR is exposed as the Soros-funded crap network that it is.

Fox New Channel continues its great tradition of bringing people “fair and balanced” political analysis by bringing another respected liberal commentator to the network and Juan Williams will continue to get great exposure on the most successful and most watched cable news network on television.

Meanwhile, NPR loses a great commentator, exposes itself as petty and intolerant and has brought about loud calls for defunding the network of taxpayer funds in light of the George Soros funding.

All because Juan Williams expressed a fact that everyone knows is true, even the MF-ing media, which goes out of its way to not offend Muslims, even though they insist there is nothing to fear from offending Muslims. As usual, the Left exposes their hypocrisy and shoots themselves in the foot.

Since I’ve derailed this thread, I might as well drive a stake in its heart. DragonCon has morphed into one of the east coast’s biggest geekfests, kicked off by a massive parade down the middle of downtown ATL (think hundreds of nerds dressed as stormtroopers or anime characters). Since its inception, it has spread like chlamydia to most of the larger hotels here, and spans four days of gaming, autographs, celebrity panels, costume contests and poorly written fan-fiction where Spock and Kirk have lots of gay sex on the bridge of the Enterprise. It’s where chicks with low self-esteem wearing skimpy elf-wench outfits can have un-fulfilling intercourse with dudes dressed up like Spiderman or Doctor Who and no one feels too bad about it except the maid who walks in on them as she’s trying to drop off clean towels. It’s a place where under-employed IT workers can max out their Capital One credit card on fake swords and an autographed toilet lid from the set of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. It’s the sights and smells of 50,000 sci-fi fans who’s idea of personal hygiene involves the warning “Do not spray near open flame”.

My two problems with this are: 1)Mr. Williams was fired for personal views that had nothing to do with his job as an analyst, and 2)how is it possible to tell what faith group someone adheres to when they’re sitting next to you on a plane? Personally, what makes me nervous on a plane is the ground/air – air/ground transition. That and lack of a decent frosty beverage.

Just clicked on an ad banner here for “Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl” looks like an instant classic at Dragoncon…

I’d have to lookup the quote again, but I believe he said something along the lines of “when I see someone in traditional Muslim garb on a plane with me, it makes me nervous”. Or something to that effect.

You’re correct that the problem is that the Muslim terrorists are never that obvious. So the next step is people getting nervous just seeing someone who looks Arab and assume them to be Muslim.

Yeah, it sucks that completely innocent people have to deal with dirty looks like that, but the blame goes to Muslim terrorists, not people who have rational worries about Muslim terrorists.

I don’t know what Muslims’ problems are, but if I were getting wrongfully ‘harassed’ with dirty looks and suspicious glances everywhere I went, I wouldn’t be complaining to those people, I’d be getting pissed off at those who caused those people to look suspiciously at me in the first place.

Also, considering Muslims supposedly were among the 2996 murdered on 9/11/2001, you’d think that instead of working to make us less aware of Muslim terrorists in our midst, they’d work with us to make us more aware, considering the Muslim terrorists are not opposed to killing fellow Muslims. Instead, average Muslims and Muslim groups are doing the exact opposite.
