Military issues; everything except war

| September 21, 2010

Last year, we waited more than a hundred days while the President made up his mind whether or not he wanted to win in Afghanistan and provide General McCrystal with the troops he said he needed to win in Afghanistan, Finally, the President decided to give the General half of what he requested as a compromise with his political base – as if victory against terrorism could be possible with a compromise.

General McChrystal is gone now because he happen to complain to a reporter about the support he wasn’t getting. Now, a year later, we’re debating whether we can win in Afghanistan after General McChrystal had already predicted we wouldn’t without giving the support he needed.

Earlier last year the President tried to jam down the throats of service-connected disabled veterans a plan to force those veterans to buy insurance to cover their treatment so the President could afford to provide free healthcare for families making more than $80,000/year who hadn’t served in the military. If not for the Veteran Service Organizations, we’d be paying our premiums right now.

Now, we look at the “Defense” Bill which seems to have everything in it except defense.

What should have been a routine budget bill for the Pentagon is now a political cauldron brimming with proposed policy changes over abortion, gay rights and illegal immigration. Senate Democrats have folded, or attempted to fold, all those issues into a single defense package, leading to accusations that the Senate is needlessly politicizing its annual obligation to fund the military.

As the parties hurl political hand grenades at one another, stuck in the crossfire is the military itself.

Even pop culture figure, Lady Gaga, who until recently I thought was a transvestite, has entered the debate by pleading with college students in Maine to harass their Congress members to repeal the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy which allows gays to serve in the military. Really? Maine? If she was interested in having an impact on the discussion, she should have gone to Alabama or Mississippi. No courage in going to Maine.

So i guess these issues that aren’t really related to the defense budget are being added so Democrats can bitch that Republicans don’t support the troops during the election when they vote against the larded bill. But it hardly compares to the votes in Congress over the last ten years in which Democrats really did vote against defense bills in an effort to actually defund the military. Like the four times between 2006 and 2008 the Democrats actually voted specifically to cut off funding for deployed troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

So this is what Democrats think of the troops – they are a political football to kick back and forth to achieve their political agenda. Their pitched battles can be compromised. The victories on the battlefield take a backseat to victories at the polls.

See, I learned this decades ago when I was sitting in the Saudi desert waiting for Congress to decide whether I can fight or not…while they used me and my troops to blackmail President GHW Bush into signing a tax hike bill that would defeat him several months later. And, oh, I also figured out that Congress hoped we would lose and die by the thousands so they could use that as ammunition in the election, too.

Nothing more I could add, Jonn. You are 100% correct. I think at one time I got into a pissing match about this very same “political football” shit. I knew then I was right, and I knew it wouldn’t change and it sucks. Ask a left-minded person about this and they will get all emotional and then call you names for telling the truth. The RCG’s they wear demand it!

Perhaps we should now call her Lady GayGay?

This is an absolutely flawless example of the priorities the demcong have – party first, country a distant second. Kiss the obama ass at all costs. Pucker up, buttercups. And if you look at the democrat tradition, this goes back to before the Civil War so it is truly a tradition to them. How the hell can people be so ignorant of reality and still be able to draw breath? I decided long ago that the demcong are my enemy as surely as the Soviets and Norks were.

“Lady Gaga railed against what she called the injustice of having goodhearted gay soldiers booted from military service while straight soldiers who harbor hatred toward gays are allowed to fight for their country. She suggested a new policy should target straight soldiers who are “uncomfortable” with gay soldiers in their midst. “Our new law is called ‘If you don’t like it, go home!'” she said.” Yes, that’s the attitude. The ant-DADT crowd likes to make the manpower argument, which is so easily defeated because it’s almost laughable. “How can the military kick perfectly good gay soldiers out of the military while we’re fighting two wars?” Of course, a few statistics blows that one out of the water. The number of homosexuals booted from the service is microspcopic next to the number of soldier who will not be recruited or retained if we change the policy. (And this assumes that all of the troops kicked out were actually homosexuals, not just dirtbag troops who were looking for a way to get themselvews chaptered.) Then they show their true colors. “If you don’t like it, go home!” That’s what I thought. They don’t give a damn if the military loses a tenth or a quarter of its manpower. They don’t give a shit if the military loses all of its manpower! The health of the military is nowhere on their radar screen. It’s a very bad institution. It reminds me of their attitude toward affirmative action. Their way or the highway. Shut your damned mouth. One of the reasons I chose not to reenlist is because of affirmative action and the gag order that was placed on soldiers never to say anything negative about the policy. In other words, the affirmative action policy (and gag order) cost the military at least one perfectly good soldier–me. What’s worse, according to the article, Gaga wants a new policy that will “target” soldiers who are uncomfortable with homosexuals in the ranks. Hmmm…and how would we go about that? Inquisitions? The thought police? What she means is that we will seek out “bigots”, and punish them… Read more »

Oh yeah, “celebrate diversity or else”. That’s the mindset of the left, visible in their talk shows, except for the “Talkers” themselves. It’s more “do as I say, not as I do”.
But, don’t get all over Lady GayGay, she’s just echoing what’s being said in the “hallowed” Halls of Congress and the Pentagon.

I meant to add, the left and their mouthpieces on the Hill won’t be satisfied until the military is just another social experiment. They’ll only be happy when the military is permanently and irretrievably broken.

Targeting soldiers who might be uncomfortable with homosexuality. Hmmm…it’s hard to imagine where they’d start.

When I was in the military, there were EO training sessions that focused on race and racism. Due to the government’s one dimensional conceptualization of racism, most of the training revolved around evil white males and their deep seeded racism. Much of the policy seemed to assume that there’s no such thing as a black racist, or simply a non-white racist.

That’s laughable, but it’s true. Black soldiers seemed to get away with seemingly racist comments in a way that white soldiers never could. White soldiers had to walk on egg shells and black soldiers did not.

So, if we’re going to be “targeting” “homophobia”, where should we start? How will we know which soldiers harbor illegal thoughts? Might we start with the Mormons, then move on to the Catholics, the Evangelical protestants, anyone who attends church on Sunday? Will chaplains be the first to be scrutinized?

I wonder…

Luckily, I just saw on the news site that the cloture vote has failed. Today was the last day of the legislative session. When Congress comes back, there will likely be a very different mix.

Yep… nuff said.

Lets shove as much crap on this bill as possible, even though very little of it has anything to do with defence, that way we can smear the republicans for not supporting the troops.

As for Lady Gaga, what can you say? She’s a dumb guidette, who took her name from “Radio Gaga”(she can thank Queen for that), her dance music from Madonna, and her silly costumes from Eddie Arcadia’s girlfriend in the Last Dragon. At least she’s stealing from a decent decade and not the 70s or 90s.
