Dems hoping to cut Defense spending

| July 23, 2010

Cortillaen sends us link from the New York Times entitled “Pentagon Faces Growing Pressures to Trim Budget“. Yeah, Defense is always the first to get cut under a Democrat Administration followed by massive spending by the next Republican administration to rebuild our national security to the howls of the Democrats and the media.

After nearly a decade of rapid increases in military spending, the Pentagon is facing intensifying political and economic pressures to restrain its budget, setting up the first serious debate since the terrorist attacks of 2001 about the size and cost of the armed services.

This is after the Democrats have shoved unneeded spending down the throats of the Pentagon to shore up employment in their respective districts. And you know the Democrats will never give up that portion of their addiction to tax payer money, so inevitably Defense spending cuts will affect the troops more than voters who will vote for Democrats for their local jobs programs.

As Jonn pointed out this is a cycle which repeats itself over and over. The real thing however that gets my underwear in knot about this sort of action is that the next time the shooting starts the self same Democrats who cut defense then want to get behind the microphone and in front of the cameras and spin one story after another about ill equipped our military is. Who can forget all the gnashing of teeth and whining about under armored HMMV, a vehicle never designed to be on the front line of combat or the lack of bullet proof vests.

In some of the reporting I have heard on this they are pushing for staff cuts to which I would like to know how many of these same congress critters have made any cuts in their staff? It seems the only sector hiring nowadays is the government which is borne out by the reports of the unprecedented growth of the euphemistically call the public sector.

Honestly I expected cuts to the defense budget to occur much earlier then this, and this is just talk right now, but to a political party that has suffered some serious wounds, just like a cornered animal, I expect them to lash out violently and in all directions if the elections in November go the way that most rational people think.

And that may indeed be the biggest threat to this country. There will be a 3 month window between the elections and the actual seating of the new congress, and Nancy and her minions can do a whole lot of damage in that time. So much that it will make their actions of the last 4 years, the Dems have been the party in power for 4 years in congress afterall, look like recess at an elementary school.

I found this tidbit to be the most interesting (in the vein of the Chinese curse, mind you) part of the story:

Two-thirds of Pentagon spending is on personnel costs. It is possible that the Pentagon will have to look for the first time at cuts to the health benefits provided to active and retired military personnel and their families.

Some analysts said the Pentagon would eventually come under pressure to reduce the size of the armed forces.

Mr. Adams, the Clinton administration budget official, wrote in a recent analysis that for “any real savings on defense budgets to occur, end strength must shrink.”

Can you say Clinton Era? I thought you could.

Most ethical Congress ever…draining the swamp…I keep hearing San Fran Nan repeating those lines over and over in my head…priceless.

Dutch,

Forget Clinton. Think Carter, but worse.

In a bizarre turn of events, I seem to find myself hoping AQ and the Taliban turn up the heat overseas just to prevent the rape of all things military and ensuing crash in national defense preparedness and capability that would follow a lull letting Obama terminate major overseas involvement without much public outcry. Rock, hard place; frying pan, fire; you know the drill.

Oh, the things stories like this do to my blood pressure…
