“I knew they needed someone,” he said. And although he will miss his wife, dog and hobbies while away, Bernhard said, “I’m excited about going because it’s a job that needs to be done.”

That’s a quote from 79-year-old Colonel (Dr.) William Bernard who is on active duty once again as flight surgeon. You can read the whole story at Defense.gov News.

Thanks to Rurik for the heads up.

WOW!!! OFS!!! Hooah!!

OldTrooper

“He joined the Army Air Corps during the Second World War and actually fought against members of his own family, because we are a German family,” Bernhard said. “I always wanted to follow in his footsteps.”

Sorry, if he’s 79, he wasn’t old enough to get into WWII. If he was born in 1930, or 1931, he would have been 14-15 when WWII ended. I know, because my Father-in-Law was born in 1930 and was not old enough for WWII, but he did serve in Korea.

Now, on with our regularly scheduled progrum…….

OldTrooper

ok, my bad, it wasn’t clear from the story.

Frankly Opinionated

What a lucky bastard! Gets to serve alongside the young blood heroes. I feel great just being able to offer moral support, as a civilian, community mentor. Take that you lib, coward, anti-war, anti-America types. Mess with him and he’ll cut off your Oxycontin supply.

Now compare this fine officer’s actions with another US Army Flight Surgeon, and fellow Lt Colonel:

http://davidbellavia.com/new/2010/shameless-ltc-refuses-to-deploy-without-seeing-obama-birth-certificate/

The 79-year old is doing his duty because he cares about his brothers and sisters in uniform. The other crapweasel is refusing to deploy because he doesn’t believe Obama is a citizen, and his orders are therefor illegal.

Lt Colonel Larkin, the latter doctor, is the kind of officer who puts the ass in assmaggot.

God Bless COL Bernhard, and all our veterans.

Trent

Bless this doctor and officer. What an inspiration!

AW1 Tim – I am not big on idengifying ranks, but I think Dr. Bernhard is a full bird Colonel, not an Lt. Col., but I could be wrong. If so, being as is he is old enough to have grandchildren and perhaps great grandchildren serving, I want to give him his proper credit.

Debra

AW1, it goes like this:

Navy captain = Army colonel. Both full birds.

Hell, I hope I am still around at seventy nine. God Speed to you Colonel and may your journey be safe.

From looking at the earned badges on his uniform, and his internal call to duty for his fellow soldiers, here is a MAN I would be proud to salute, as a privilege, not just a responsibility.

SIR -(SALUTE)- YES SIR

And who’s the 5-star behind him? General of the Armies. I didn’t think there were any in today’s military.

Blanka

Woof, he’s got stamina. Is there an age cut-off?

SSG Dirty Al

God speed and Good Luck Sir! SALUTE! A Man among Men. Wish I could go with ya, it would be an HONOR just to carry your Duffle Bag.

NHSparky

Woodman–I believe that’s a painting of Eisenhower behind the good Colonel.
