Marine vet running for Senate has Nazi tattoo on chest

| October 22, 2025

A Marine veteran of the Afghanistan War is running for the US Senate from Maine. Around these parts we tend to respect vets that run for office, even if they are doing so as Democrats. Well this fella, Graham Platner, took to a podcast to admit that he’s got a great big Nazi tattoo on his chest. He’s planning on removing it. He blames a night of your typical drunken Marines on liberty antics. Who here hasn’t gotten a giant SS-Totenkopf prominently tattooed while out with the boys?

Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT) is aware of the tat, and still supports Platner’s Senate bid. Time was that a person with a Nazi tattoo was political kryptonite, but the Democrat party is very accepting of those who want to push all the Jews into the sea these days.

The Press Herald has the story;

A leading Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Maine took the unusual step this week of disclosing he has a tattoo that has been linked to Nazis.

In an extended interview on “Pod Save America” that aired Monday night, Graham Platner said he and fellow Marines got a skull tattoo while drunk on leave in Croatia in 2007 without knowing about its association with Nazi Germany.

“We got very inebriated, and we did what Marines on liberty do, and we decided to go get a tattoo,” Platner said. “We chose a terrifying looking skull and crossbones off the wall because we were Marines and, you know, skulls and crossbones are pretty standard military thing.”

Platner, a combat veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, made the disclosure by providing a video of himself dancing in only his “silkies” (Marines’ running shorts) at a family wedding, because he said political opponents were pitching stories about it to national journalists.

The tattoo on his chest appears to resemble the Totenkopf, which is German for “death’s head.” It was worn by Hitler’s brutal SS guard and became a symbol of the unit guarding concentration camps, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

The Army prohibits people with tattoos that are “extremist, racist, sexist or otherwise indecent” from serving. And Platner noted that the tattoo was never an issue during his screening for the Army National Guard or when he was cleared to serve on a security detail for the ambassador for Afghanistan.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont and a progressive icon who helped launch Platner’s candidacy with an early endorsement and Labor Day rally in Portland, told Huffington Post reporter Igor Bobic Tuesday that he continues to support the candidate. Bobic posted Sanders’ comments on the social media site, X.

“There’s a young man who served his country in Afghanistan and Iraq, and he went through some really difficult experiences seeing friends of his killed or whatever, and in spite of all of that he had the courage to run,” Sanders said, according to Bobic. “I personally think he is an excellent candidate. I’m going to support him, and I look forward to him becoming the next senator in the state of Maine”

This isn’t his first stumble on the campaign trail. His political director resigned after Pattner’s past comments on reddit came to light. Here’s a bit on that;

Graham Platner’s campaign for U.S. Senate has been rolling through the state like a juggernaut since launching in late August.

His background as an oyster farmer and military veteran has excited progressives and others eager to challenge the national Democratic establishment. And his entrance has generated largely glowing coverage from local and national media outlets.

That all changed this week when national media began reporting on a series of years-old social media posts that were deleted before he announced his candidacy.

Politico reported that Platner suggested in 2018 that violence may be necessary to achieve social justice, saying that if people “expect to fight fascism without a good semi-automatic rifle, they ought to do some reading of history” and “an armed working class is a requirement for economic justice.”

CNN was the first to report on the deleted messages, including comments in 2021 agreeing police— “all of them” — are bastards and that rural white Americans “actually” are racist, in 2020. And he said his service in the Marines and Army National Guard made him “stop believing in any of the patriotic nonsense that got me there in the first place.”

There’s more at the link. While all this sounds like your very typical modern Democrat, Platner says that all of these usual modern Democrat talking points was the fault of his PTSD and he’s all better now.

He has explained that he struggled with post traumatic stress disorder following his military service but said Thursday he no longer feels the same sense of disillusionment he once did.

Yikes.

‘ Didn’t know about it’s association with Nazi Germany ‘
Bullshit

HT3

110% Bullshit! Especially Croatia. The SS, their collaborators, and partisans fought very intense battles in those parts during WW2. A lot of that shit carried over when Yugoslavia fell apart that led to the ethnic & religious violence in the 90’s. Some guys in the comment section were probably present. He knew what the Totenkopf symbolized, but he though there wouldn’t be any accountability. He’s just like “Fuck yeah! I’m a badass. Be afraid of me!”

The Death’s Head was the symbol of Schutzstaffel (SS) and the 3rd Waffen-SS Panzer Division. Most of the battle group’s personnel had been transferred to the Waffen-SS from concentration camp guard units, which were known collectively as SS-Totenkopfverbände. A particularly nasty group even a far as the Waffen-SS is concerned. Given that the curtain was pulled back on The Left’s antisemitism since Oct 7th, who’s surprised? They’re still running Jay Jones, because…

If he didn’t know what the Totenkopf was the he’s too much of a dummkopf to be elected.

To be clear, it **is** the SS-totenkopf and he’s sure to have known that.

There are other death’s heads (17th Lancers; Brunswick Hussars, pirates, etc.), but they are a different design. We can say that the SS skull-and-bones is a totenkopf, but not all totenkopf are SS.

Yeah, I know I’m preaching to the choir. Mea Culpa!

This made me think of when Justine Turdeau invited a former SS man to our parliament. He was cheered and celebrated for fighting ‘ for Ukraine against Russia ‘
🤦‍♂️ So embarrassing

But it’s all good! Preach on!

He may not have. He, after all, became a Marine.

Hey, hey, easy there, Quartermaster. Just because we eat crayons doesn’t mean we are stupid. Well, some of us are. Some of us, well, we aint gots no brains and need to be more gooder.

Marine0331

Gotta admit that I never ate crayons but I did eat the paste in art class in first grade.

The Finns removed the swastika from their aircraft only recently.

Note: Finland was the only Axis aligned country not occupied post WW2.

So, is he a communist or a fascist?

Yes.

Democrats always liked a flag waver. Unfortunately, they tend to wave Mexican flags and, now, big red ones with a white circle and swastika.

Imagine with me….

Platner in the tattoo parlor: “gimme dat one. No, not the cutesy skull. I mean,” squints, “THAT one.” Points at different graphic.

Tattoo artist: “oh, this one?” Points at SS Totenkopf. “You realize what this is, right?”

Platner: “yeah, yeah. SS deaths head. Bada… imma..”, almost falls over. “Imma bad%#* marine motor scooter. Gimme dat one.”

Platner wakes up, stone cold sober, and looks at his newest tat: “Sweet. Exactly what I wanted. I think I’ll keep it. One day I may need it to serve as yet another example of how libs will ignore literally anything (d)one by one of us because we are (d)ifferent and special. They’ll (d)ismiss this tat even though it’s the second most recognizable nazi symbol in the world. Lucky I’m not a republican because then I would be called a nazi, even without this sweet tat!”

Narrator: “or any nazi behaviors, for that matter.”

Platner’s Buddy: “Did you see the SECDEF’s Christian Nationalist Tatt!!! That’s literally nazism.”

Not a Lawyer

Maine has been the recipient of large numbers of black immigrants in the last five years in an attempt to swing the state more blue. They are still the whitest state in the country but it is changing.

This is an interesting test case to see if black people will vote for an actual Nazi. I would think not, but who knows? They may believe his BS story.

Quartermaster

C’mon now. You know Republicans are Nazis. Just as Graham Platner.

Amateur Historian

“Who here hasn’t gotten a giant SS-Totenkopf prominently tattooed while out with the boys?”

Ummm….me.

(For extra clarity, I’m affirming in the negative about being so plastered I’d think getting POS Nazi tattoo would be a good idea (which it isn’t)).

HT3

We had a guy in A-Gang, a first class MM1, and he got so drunk in the PI that he got a big red lipstick kiss on his ass cheek. He clams no recollection of the night he got it, but it he still had it all those years later.

Not a Lawyer

He said he had it covered up, but has made many eye raising statements.

Questions about the tattoo come after the recent discovery of Platner’s now-deleted online statements that included dismissing military sexual assaults, questioning Black patrons’ gratuity habits and criticizing police officers and rural Americans.

Platner has apologized for those comments, saying they were made after he left the Army in 2012, when he was struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.

I Got older and became a communist.

I don’t why he would blame PTSD for toeing the party line? Where is his military service record or at least a list of awards and decorations?

Be that as it is, Susan Collins is hardly right wing. Getting her out of office might be a good thing for the Republican Party. If she were graceful she would have stepped down after her 30 years in office instead of continuing to bore us with her weak left of center moderate politics.

Sounds to me like an “Uuhhm, ahhh, I dunno, I, *uuhhhm*, I don’t know what I did, so, …” kind of moment and statement.

Was this clown a Marine Vet or Army Vet

Hack Stone

Yes. Started out in the Marine Corps, then crossed over to National Guard. That way he can bring embarrassment to two branches of the US Military.

My mom told me that I ever came home with a tattoo she would remove it with cheese grater. Thanks mom….

Odie

Thanks mom … for the advice or the tattoo removal 🙂

Marine0331

So, the morning I left for Parris Island mom and dad hug me and say goodbye and dad (Army type) says, “son, whatever you do please don’t mark your body up with tattoos.” I replied, “but dad you have them, you have some of the coolest tattoos (8th Field Artillery crossed cannon barrels on one forearm and a small island with two palm trees and coconuts on the other forearm for Hawaiian Islands that moved when he flexed his Popeye-like forearms). Dad replied, “yeah they look cool when you are young but not when you are a wrinkled old man and the ink fades and runs together.” Damn dad, you were so right….as usual.

rgr1480

My uncle had a big rose with his ex-wife’s name (ca 1944)… he remarried and kept the tattoo. I was about 10 years old and fascinated by it and wanted one too. He said, “Getting a tattoo was the worse decision I’ve ever made in my life. Please don’t ever get one.”

That has stuck with me all my life. I’m a third-generation maverick and neither my grandfather, father, nor I have one. And we were all infantry.

Forest Bondurant

Graham “Schutzstaffel” Planter is running as a Democrat. No surprise he’s a dipshit.

Black shirt or brown shirt (related to the “Sturmabteilung”) are both consistent with that party over the last few decades.

Fuck that guy.

Does he have any other ShutzStaffel tattoos? Any runic S’s?

Hack Stone

So, is he running as a proud combat veteran who put his life on the line to protect or nation, or running as a victim of the Military Industrial Complex who used him to slaughter innocent people of color in order to line their pockets?

11B-Mailclerk

He could write a book about his views and difficulties!

Maine Kamph!

Hack Stone

You earned it.

rgr1480

Ooooooo …. an SS monkey!!!! See the totenkopf????

timactual

I am quite willing to believe he was too ignorant to know that the really cool death’s head was used by the Nazis, but judging from the rest of the revelations about his behavior and writings I still think he is an asshole. The Totenkopf was also used by other military units; Prussian, Spanish, and even British, so evidently a lot of manly men doing manly things in manly ways think it is quite stylish.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Totenkopf

11B-Mailclerk

The US Marines had that whole “Scout Sniper” thing. Ahem….

And how many American SportsBall teams named themselves after implacably murderous savage tribes? ( to the everlasting ausement of my tribal kinfolk. )

But isn’t “SS” how you say “Mighty Whities” without sounding goofy? “Hoplite Honkies” maybe?

SFC D

Yup, the tat is just the cherry on the whole slimy shit sundae.

OAM

If he did this with a group of Marines on a bender, who are those others? Do they support his story? Name them or have them come out for him. Otherwise,

Alex, I’ll take, “It’s a big, fat lie for $1000”.

Marine0331

Wow, I’m ashamed to claim this pinhead liar as a brother Marine. Anyone who gets that particular tattoo knows damn right well that it is connected to the Waffen SS. Cripe, all he had to do was to watch any WWII war movie involving the Germans (Jeez, he had to at least have seen Kelly’s Heros or Battle of The Bulge) and chances are he saw that skull. He’s full of shit AND what the left lib-tards call Trump all of the time. A Nazi.

timactual

Actually, starting in 1934 the uniform of German army armored troops was a black uniform with the “Totenkopf” insignia on the both sides of the collar. The “Totenkopf” and similar designs seem to be very popular with “macho” types, which Platner seems to be. It seems perfectly possible, even probable, that this guy is dumb and ignorant enough (he did claim to be a Communist, after all) not to know that the SS also used it.

“Politico reported that Platner suggested in 2018 that violence may be necessary to achieve social justice, saying that if people “expect to fight fascism without a good semi-automatic rifle, they ought to do some reading of history” and “an armed working class is a requirement for economic justice.”
Hate to say it out loud, but this might just be the money shot. I believe Mao was of the opinion that all power sprouted from the barrel of a gun, and the state should hold all power. This report from politico is correct though not in the context it is presented in.
An armed citizenry is the best defence against government encroachment upon the aforementioned citizens. Look to our allies in Europe, and Australia/New Zealand to see that once disarmed the populace gets no option or opinion that isn’t government approved.
Not saying I would vote for him, but he has a point.
