13-year-old in custody for alleged theft of Amazon delivery van, police pursuit & crash

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department says a 13-year-old is in custody following the theft of an Amazon delivery van on Wednesday and a chase that ended in a crash.DMPD’s Public Information Officer, Sgt. Paul Parizek said the van was reported stolen just before 4:45 p.m. from the 600 block of Walker Street. The van was spotted by officers near SE 14th Street and Parke Avenue a little over 45 minutes later. Officers tried to stop it, but the van took off.
The van crashed into a pickup truck two minutes later on SE 14th Street and the railroad viaduct, according to Sgt. Parizek. Two occupants of the van fled, but police took them into custody quickly.
Police have linked the 13-year-old driver of the stolen van to another vehicle theft that happened on October 7th. They’ve been referred to juvenile court on charges of first-degree theft, second-degree theft, and eluding.

Thirteen y.o.? Wadda ya do with ’em at that young of an age?
The only thing I could think of that was reasonable was send ’em to a wilderness youth work camp. (If there isn’t such a thing, there should be)
Out in the middle of nowhere, nowhere to run, miles from any city and any bad influences, no cell phone. Write and receive physical paper letters. Working on trails and clearing dead trees.
Yeah, it’s a dream, but one can hope.
Texas has such program in a slightly milder form. Not the wilderness, but when they run they get lost in the woods (city kids). They are supposed to be learning a trade. Favorite Son-in-Law worked at one for a while.
Some of them have real heart-breaking stories. There was a teenage girl who, when her required stay was up, ran and hid so she didn’t have to go with her mother because her mother was selling her to men for sex. The officials learned this, and got her placed somewhere else.
Imagine preferring to stay in a semi-prison as better than being at home…
Yeah….that’s the idea. Get the yutes away from home and into a more wholesome alternative environment for a comparison.
