M18 restored to service in Air Force

| August 27, 2025

I’m sure y’all recall the M18 service pistol debacle – an airman in Global Strike Command was killed by a pistol which allegedly fired on its own.

The Sig Sauer-made handgun had been suspended from service across the command on July 21 after Airman Brayden Lovan, 21, a security forces airman, died from an M18 gunshot at F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming.

The command required that all 7,970 of the Sig-Sauer pistols it uses undergo mandatory inspection.

Out of close to 8,000 pistols inspected by the command, just under 200 were found to have some amount of wear on key firing mechanisms, though none were found to be responsible for any misfires. The M18 and a slightly larger variant known as the M17 are the standard handguns issued across the Department of Defense.

Lovan’s death was originally reported as a mishap in which the M18 may have fired on its own. Air Force Global Strike Command pulled the pistols from service soon after, with other Air Force commands following suit, though the Air Force did not pull the weapon service-wide, nor did the Army, Navy or Marine Corps.

It was reported a couple of weeks ago that another airman had been charged with making a false statement and involuntary manslaughter.

A review of weapon discharges in [Air Force Global Strike Command] showed that none were attributed to weapons malfunction,” the command said in the statement announcing the return of the pistols to service.  Task and Purpose

Seemingly this lets Sig-Sauer off the hook, at least with the military. It should be noted, however, that many police departments have banned the civilian equivalent for police use and even the head of Gunsite, probably one of the most prestigious training schools in the country, banned it when a personal acquaintance who was a Master Sig Armorer was able to force an accidental discharge by wiggling the gun in a holster. YouTube    Me, I stick to Brownings and wheelguns (or did, before that tragic boating accident.)

But Commissar told.us this was the pistols’s fault and it was 100% defective. Well at least his perfect record of being wrong is intact.

Be that as it is a lot of agencies won’t touch the 320 model due to the rep anyway. Lots of other good pistols out there.

Imagine that.

Not surprised.

Could Sig at least make this in a better (neutral, prferably dark) color so we’re not taking a desert tan weapon to Europe or Asia?

I ‘spect that is some REMF in the Five-Sided Puzzle Palace’s call.
The OTC variants are in different colors.

Looking at the web pages, I’m seeing black, a dark gray, some mixed colors, possibly special lines. As well as the desert tan.

So it seems that Sig can (and will) make ’em, if someone will order them.

I suspect it has something to do with the AI algorithm and weapon identification. The robots can’t identify you are armed and therefore do not classify you as a threat!

I never had a problem with the 6 shooter; except, I never got issued the model they used in the Saturday matinees. You know, they one that the good guy never had to reload.

Your right, I got out my DVD’s with 77 Monogram B western flicks . and between Jimmy Wakely and Johnny Mac Brown going after the guys on horseback, each six shooter puts out around 12 or more rounds without re loading. Next B western flick, I’ll use my manual push button counter and see exactly how many rounds go down range on horseback and of course behind the boulders. To be continued and I’ll let you all know what I come out with ..

Maybe the old guys Inspector Luger talked about carried the bullets for him. What were their names? I’ll probably remember about 3 O’clock tomorrow morning.

I think I just answered my own question. Might could be the reason I didn’t get the good-guy 6 shooter is the same reason I always got coal in my stocking — I wasn’t the good guy.

Training with wheelguns definitely make you choose your shots rather than mag dumping

LOTS OF UNSTABLE BOATS AROUND LATELY. Must be that dang global warming or whatever they call it now.

Thunderstixx

I just picked one up not too long ago.
With a factory installed Romeo Optic.
21 rounds and came with enough magazines to empty an entire box of 9mm.
Another big heavy gun with small recoil and accuracy coming out of the business end of the tool.
Too bad there was that Jet Ski accident in the Gulf of America 20 miles offshore…

You too? That’s how I lost mine! I had it with me for sharks.

Can someone get Commissar to come explain all of this to us? I mean, he knew SO much of how Fd up they were prior to this news.

But, what do I know?🤔😉
