The wake up call nine years late
An article in the Washington Times this morning entitled “Muslims: Youth arrests are wake-up call” quotes a local imam who has apparently been asleep for the last nine years;
Area Muslim leaders on Friday said the five American men arrested in Pakistan for purportedly attempting to join al Qaeda were lured into embracing the terrorist ideology via the Internet. The leaders said they now will wage a cyber counterattack. wire
“This is a wake-up call involving our youths – Muslims and Catholics,” Imam Mahdi Bray said outside the Islamic Circle of North America’s mosque in Alexandria, where the men worshipped and participated in youth-group activities.
“They see great injustices, and their emotions and passions are stirred as they should be. … But we are determined not to let religious extremists exploit the vulnerability of our youth through slick, seductive and destructive propaganda on the Internet. We will respond in kind on the Internet. Silence in cyberspace is not an option,” Mr. Bray said.
First of all, I don’t why he said “Muslims and Catholics” because none of the five arrested were Catholics. Catholics aren’t traveling to the Vatican and blowing themselves up among throngs of tourists, in case no one noticed but me.
Secondly, we’ve known the internet is a major tool of terrorists since Al Gore invented the damn thing – why is this incident the wake-up call? Wasn’t 9-11 the wake up call? Or was that just a wake up call for Christians? If CAIR and MAS could bring themselves to form the words “terrorist” in their crooked little mouths and point fingers at real terrorists instead of making excuses for them, maybe these five half-wits wouldn’t have considered jihad a form of social justice.
The Washington Post trumpets the fact that Muslim leaders are “abandoning” their silence on homegrown jihadists;
American Muslim organizations, jolted by the spate of cases, are abandoning their hesitation to speak out about the issue. While underlining that only a tiny minority has become radicalized, two major groups — the Muslim Public Affairs Council and the Council on American-Islamic Relations — said this week that they would launch counter-radicalization programs aimed at young people.
Several U.S. and international terrorism analysts say that American Muslims, as a group, remain more prosperous, assimilated and moderate than those in Europe. But the analysts also note that immigration trends, the global spread of a militant Islamism and controversial actions by the United States and its allies since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks increase the chances that U.S. Muslims could carry out a domestic attack.
“The U.S. is experiencing what countries like the U.K. have gone through several years ago,” said Sajjan Gohel, director of international security at the Asia-Pacific Foundation, a research organization in London. “The worry for the U.S. is there will be a similar blow-back of homegrown terrorism.”
Yeah, well, if the Muslim leaders had the cojones to speak up a decade ago instead of calling the rest of us racists, maybe we could have precluded this “wake up”.

Interesting that Catholics were included in the Imam’s statement. Historically when Islam went into Jihad mode in the direction of Christianity things got ugly. The Pope calling Catholics to the Cross, nine Crusades, the massacre in Jerusalem, El Cid, Vlad the Impaler, the seige of Vienna, etc. A millenia of messy. But I’m not seeing Pope Benedict calling Catholics to the Cross. So why single out us Catholics? Perhaps he meant Christians but then why exlcude Jews? They are “People of the Book” too? Perhaps Muslims are terrified of the radicalization of their religion and are looking to draw in people of other faiths to help fix their problem. But arn’t we already doing that? No disrespect intended to Islam but radicalization is not a problem for The Catholic Church. Perhaps the Imam should praise our troops, our nation and the efforts many nations are undertaking to put an end to this latest Islamic Jihad. But that might get him killed …
This is being placed as a “wakeup” call because the parents say they had no clue what was going on. If that’s true, they had no idea what was being taught in their local mosque. This is a distinct possibility, because I’ve seen reports of exactly this in the US since at least about 2003. It’s like the various wakeup calls over marijuana, glue-sniffing, and membership in the SDS.
Radical imams peeled away stupid and impressionable young men from their families across the Mideast, and using them as cannon fodder in Iraq, sometimes against their will and without their knowledge. Muslim parents who think that can’t happen here have to think, again, and monitor what is happening on Friday afternoons.
If the “youths” involved were Somali, then the reference to Catholics is obvious. Catholic Charities is one of, if not the, largest organizations involved in bringing Somali refugees into the United States. The problem here is that, once in place, Catholic Charities basically abandons them.
Catholic Charities has brought thousands of Somali refugees into Maine. They are literally bussed here, and when they disembark, you can see them each holding a little packet of papers. It has the local addresses of where to apply for welfare, housing vouchers, food stamps, etc. It’s all written out in both languages how to apply for aid, what to say, what documents you need, and how to ask for legal help if needed.
Catholic Charities, through these actions, nearly bankrupted the city of Lewiston, Maine, by dumping over a thousand refugees onto the city with no warning, and over a few short months. It has been the same elsewhere. Somali youth are becoming problems in Portland, Maine, where they are forming gangs, and attempting to stake out areas of the city as their own. Anytime someone stands up to them, they holler “racism” and “intolerance” and all the bleeding hearts run to their defense.
I was born and raised a Catholic, but I have no respect for Catholic Charities because of these issues. They have done nothing to assuage the problems they caused through mass dumping of refugees, nor, apparently, do they care.
Tim,
I hear what you’re saying-there are too many left-wing activists in what should be conservative charities throwing a spanner into the works-notice how Catholic bishops speak out regularly in favor of illegal immigrant “rights.” The biggest problem is the Saudi funding of wahhabist imams and mosques in this country.
