Making excuses
So now we’re left to clean up behind Nidal Hasan – and everybody wants to be an expert. He did it because he is an Arab, he did it because the Army trained him to do it, he did it because of his long hours of listening to disturbing stories from his patients, he did it because George Bush destroyed the military, he did it because Barack Obama destroyed the military.
The Washington Post calls him a devout Muslim.
He prayed every day at the Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring, a devout Muslim who, despite asking to be discharged from the U.S. Army, was on the eve of his first deployment to war.
His aunt told the Post that he was picked upon by his peers for his ethnicity;
In an interview, his aunt, Noel Hasan of Falls Church, said he had endured name-calling and harassment about his Muslim faith for years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and had sought for several years to be discharged from the military.
CAIR rushed out a statement that they condemn Hasan’s crime;
A prominent national Muslim civil rights and advocacy group tonight condemned an attack on Fort Hood military base in Texas that left at least 12 people dead.
In a statement, the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said:
“We condemn this cowardly attack in the strongest terms possible and ask that the perpetrators be punished to the full extent of the law. No religious or political ideology could ever justify or excuse such wanton and indiscriminate violence. The attack was particularly heinous in that it targeted the all-volunteer army that protects our nation. American Muslims stand with our fellow citizens in offering both prayers for the victims and sincere condolences to the families of those killed or injured.”
Veterans with PTSD are more than willing to use this case to prove their own short fuses and the media is more than willing to make it about Hasan being a veteran – more than they’re willing to make it about him being a Muslim (Thanks to Just A Grunt for the video);

The IVAW offers “heartfelt condolences” even though until just a few weeks ago, they harbored members who publicly encouraged these types of attacks (Carl Webb). Doug Zachary, a VVAW/VFP member says those murdered soldiers had it coming and that Hasan didn’t kill enough of his fellow soldiers. Dahr Jamail blames the military itself.
Here’s a theory I have, that won’t be very popular; Hasan was/is a cheesy pogue pussy. He liked the amenities of being stationed near his home and living in the big city with a Major’s salary and suddenly he found himself at nasty-ass Fort Hood (I spent two years there and every minute trying to leave) looking at a deployment to a nastier place.
I don’t think he did it because of his faith (but he’ll use it as an excuse), or because of PTSD (ditto). The Army doesn’t train their psychiatrists to shoot rooms full of people, so it’s not the Army’s fault. It’s this spoiled little rich kid (by the way, he ignored his father’s advice when he joined the Army – listen to your father), who couldn’t stand the thought of being uncomfortable.
What? Too simple? No room for anyone to use him as their poster boy?

From what I’ve heard, the Major was prepping for his VERY FIRST OVERSEAS DEPLOYMENT. WTF!
#1 – He’s a shrink, & supposed to be helping & curing others of PTSD, not causing it.
#2 – I always thought that PTSD stood for POST (not PRE)Traumatic Stress Disorder.
PTSD comes from an inability to cope with a traumatic event; either because the event was too traumatic (as is the case with most soldiers) or because the individual does not have the skills to cope with even a small amount of stress. Saying you can get PTSD from treating PTSD is like saying watching Saving Private Ryan causes PTSD. This is just like that IVAW soldier who said he was suffering from PTSD because he was stationed in downtown DC on 9/11.
I agree with you. This guy is a dirtbag soldier. How long has he been serving? I heard since 9/11. So, he’s been in for at least eight years doing a job he morally doesn’t agree with, but he never had the opportunity to resign his commission? That’s bull. He liked getting a check and having job security. He was probably afraid he would not be able to make it as a civilian doctor.
It is possible to get PTSD indirectly. There are studies involving children and 9/11 that show there are people, though a statistically small percentage, who exhibit signs of PTSD based purely on indirect exposure.

That said, the PTSD excuse won’t fly here. He was deathly afraid of deploying to Iraq where he might be killed or see people killed, so he decided to kill people and get himself shot? If that is, in fact, the reason why he did this, then I think a mental disorder could explain his behavior. The problem is that the mental disorder responsible will be something much more damaging than PTSD.

No offense, but out in the line divisions, we referred to places like the Pentagon and cushy D.C. bases as REMF posts.In all likely hood out of pure jealousy of knowing where you’ll be waking up at next week. I spent 5 years there in the 2nd AD and enjoyed it, although Ft. Lewis beats it for scenery.

Reports are now coming in from soldiers that were there that the guy was yelling “Allahu Ackbar” when he was firing. Sounds like an Islamist motivated attack to me. But, even so, the people who ignored Hasan’s colleagues complaints of what he was saying should be feeling some fucking guilt, too. I’m sure they aren’t going down in flames, but this could have been prevented. To me, it’s fucking treason of the highest order.

Yeah, I discounted the fanaticism/terrorist motivation when I didn’t see any evidence to support that and saw things pointing in the other direction, but that new information released this morning is pretty compelling. Even the rabidly liberal Huffington Post is reporting the latest information regarding an Islamic motivation.

It isn’t about hating a group of people because you see a pattern, it is about jumping to premature conclusions without evidence. If all you need to see is a Middle Eastern last name to conclude that that person must have been motivated by Islam, then you’ve got a problem. If, on the other hand, the evidence pertaining to that case draws you inexorably to that conclusion, then there is no conflict. Things are what they are.

Hey I loved Ft Hood. When I was there it was just the 1st Cav so we had the whole place to ourselves. When I left they were still trying to figure what name they were going to give the unit moving in bringing it back up to 2 divisions on post.
Anyway this was a case of sudden jihad syndrome IMHO and all the talking heads can spend endless hours promoting their own self importance and expertise on the subject, which I am sure his defense lawyers will duly note when it comes time to call witnesses.
It seems that some of the media are trying to spin this hard that Hasan was a victim too, without coming right out and calling him one. All the talk of possible PTSD, name calling by colleagues and not being allowed to resign from the Army. It seems hard to believe this Doctor and Officer while at Walter Reed did not have someone to file a complaint with and that a hammer would not have slammed on the heads of those making the comments. Yea right, in today’s PC world.
While there is a case for not jumping to conclusions, CR, what has been the MO for the msm so far? They jumped on PTSD like a dog to a bone. As for assuming something based purely on the name of the POS……Yeah, ya got us there. I won’t deny that once I heard the name, actually before I even heard it, I had the thought in the back of my melon. Is that right? It doesn’t matter, because as humans, we become conditioned when there is a pattern. If we look back to just the recent past, we have the Ft. Dix plot, the recruiter shooting, The Colorado/NY plot, The jewish synagogue NY plot, the Texas mall plot, etc. All actors with a specific tying thread.
So, even as critical thinking people, we are creatures of habit, no matter who we are or how hard we try to fight it. Trying to be outside of that in order to appear more intelligent only makes a person more naive. That some have resorted to calling others racists doesn’t make a specific point, or refute an argument, it only deflects. That the JAG on LKL was try to posit another angle and was jumped on as racist didn’t do anything to move the discussion forward, or lend any credibility to the arguments of those calling him a racist. It was meant as a deflection based on the politically correct fears of even thinking about his religious/ethnic background being part of the reason.
We have become more interested in staying away from certain aspects in order to appear PC that we have dumbed ourselves down to what truths or possibiliteis are out there. More so, because we don’t really want to know or believe it.

My mind also went there immediately. A few people I talked to (not my cobloggers) said they first checked IVAW’s member section when they heard the name. Now, sure, this isn’t the “right” way that these things should happen. Agreed. I for one never suspected the IVAW angle.

He brought two weapons and plenty of extra ammo. He was calm during the attack, except when he yelled ‘Allah’. He choose an indoors location that virtually guaranteed a large number of soldiers in a confined space.
But the most damning in my mind-he hit the SRP, which means he killed soldiers who were getting ready to deploy to Iraq and A-stan.

It never comes out right away, but if you go back and look, you’ll see every single one was on some kind of pscyh drug and usually had stopped taking it cold turkey. At least every one that I’ve ever looked up or kept track of.
The Army seems to be in the habit of handing out brain drugs instead of using real treatment. Any bets on what kinds of drugs the shooters were on yesterday? Zoloft? Xanax? Topomax? Lamictal? Celexa? A whole cocktail of pharmaceutical drugs designed to drive you insane?
