Making excuses

| November 6, 2009

So now we’re left to clean up behind Nidal Hasan – and everybody wants to be an expert. He did it because he is an Arab, he did it because the Army trained him to do it, he did it because of his long hours of listening to disturbing stories from his patients, he did it because George Bush destroyed the military, he did it because Barack Obama destroyed the military.

The Washington Post calls him a devout Muslim.

He prayed every day at the Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring, a devout Muslim who, despite asking to be discharged from the U.S. Army, was on the eve of his first deployment to war.

His aunt told the Post that he was picked upon by his peers for his ethnicity;

In an interview, his aunt, Noel Hasan of Falls Church, said he had endured name-calling and harassment about his Muslim faith for years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and had sought for several years to be discharged from the military.

CAIR rushed out a statement that they condemn Hasan’s crime;

A prominent national Muslim civil rights and advocacy group tonight condemned an attack on Fort Hood military base in Texas that left at least 12 people dead.

In a statement, the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said:

“We condemn this cowardly attack in the strongest terms possible and ask that the perpetrators be punished to the full extent of the law. No religious or political ideology could ever justify or excuse such wanton and indiscriminate violence. The attack was particularly heinous in that it targeted the all-volunteer army that protects our nation. American Muslims stand with our fellow citizens in offering both prayers for the victims and sincere condolences to the families of those killed or injured.”

Veterans with PTSD are more than willing to use this case to prove their own short fuses and the media is more than willing to make it about Hasan being a veteran – more than they’re willing to make it about him being a Muslim (Thanks to Just A Grunt for the video);

ADDED: One of those studs at Fort Bragg sent us a link to the transcript if you can’t watch the video.

The IVAW offers “heartfelt condolences” even though until just a few weeks ago, they harbored members who publicly encouraged these types of attacks (Carl Webb). Doug Zachary, a VVAW/VFP member says those murdered soldiers had it coming and that Hasan didn’t kill enough of his fellow soldiers. Dahr Jamail blames the military itself.

Here’s a theory I have, that won’t be very popular; Hasan was/is a cheesy pogue pussy. He liked the amenities of being stationed near his home and living in the big city with a Major’s salary and suddenly he found himself at nasty-ass Fort Hood (I spent two years there and every minute trying to leave) looking at a deployment to a nastier place.

I don’t think he did it because of his faith (but he’ll use it as an excuse), or because of PTSD (ditto). The Army doesn’t train their psychiatrists to shoot rooms full of people, so it’s not the Army’s fault. It’s this spoiled little rich kid (by the way, he ignored his father’s advice when he joined the Army – listen to your father), who couldn’t stand the thought of being uncomfortable.

What? Too simple? No room for anyone to use him as their poster boy?

Exactly.

From what I’ve heard, the Major was prepping for his VERY FIRST OVERSEAS DEPLOYMENT. WTF!
#1 – He’s a shrink, & supposed to be helping & curing others of PTSD, not causing it.
#2 – I always thought that PTSD stood for POST (not PRE)Traumatic Stress Disorder.

BohicaTwentyTwo

PTSD comes from an inability to cope with a traumatic event; either because the event was too traumatic (as is the case with most soldiers) or because the individual does not have the skills to cope with even a small amount of stress. Saying you can get PTSD from treating PTSD is like saying watching Saving Private Ryan causes PTSD. This is just like that IVAW soldier who said he was suffering from PTSD because he was stationed in downtown DC on 9/11.

I agree with you. This guy is a dirtbag soldier. How long has he been serving? I heard since 9/11. So, he’s been in for at least eight years doing a job he morally doesn’t agree with, but he never had the opportunity to resign his commission? That’s bull. He liked getting a check and having job security. He was probably afraid he would not be able to make it as a civilian doctor.

CRaissi

It is possible to get PTSD indirectly. There are studies involving children and 9/11 that show there are people, though a statistically small percentage, who exhibit signs of PTSD based purely on indirect exposure.

That said, the PTSD excuse won’t fly here. He was deathly afraid of deploying to Iraq where he might be killed or see people killed, so he decided to kill people and get himself shot? If that is, in fact, the reason why he did this, then I think a mental disorder could explain his behavior. The problem is that the mental disorder responsible will be something much more damaging than PTSD.

Jerry920

I agree with TAH. No offense, but out in the line divisions, we referred to places like the Pentagon and cushy D.C. bases as REMF posts. In all likely hood out of pure jealousy of knowing where you’ll be waking up at next week. I spent 5 years there in the 2nd AD and enjoyed it, although Ft. Lewis beats it for scenery.

I shudder to think of the damage he could have caused had he done this at WRAMC.

“Here’s a theory I have, that won’t be very popular; Hasan was/is a cheesy pogue pussy.”

Works for me, Jonn. Every command, every branch, you’re gonna find SOME shitbag who is willing to do just about anything to get out of deployment–go UA, tell the CO they’re a peter-puffer, get pregnant (women only), apply for CO status. This asswipe just upped the ante that much more–far more than was necessary.

He was called names? Boo-fuckin-hoo. He should have been a non-qual on my first boat.

The Sniper

Reports are now coming in from soldiers that were there that the guy was yelling “Allahu Ackbar” when he was firing. Sounds like an Islamist motivated attack to me. I’m not discounting the fact that he was a pampered pussy, but your typical pampered pussy doesn’t start capping people. Religious fanatics with a history of badmouthing US foreign policy, a history of saying that Muslims in Afghanistan and Iaq should stand up to their aggreesors (us), and a persecution complex due to poor performance but perceived as an affront to his religion do.

JuniorAG

All the fool would have had to do once his legal ploy failed was to get on TV and make some outlandish statement and the Army would have canned him, ‘specially with him being a commissioned officer & all. I call “sudden jihad syndrome” on this one.

Moslems are Moslems first and regard us infidels as inferiors. Anyone fail to notice the Aparthied-esque treatment of non-muslims while deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan?? Things were just jolly in Afghanistan for the Sikh and Hindu communities when I was there…

American Moslems have committed numerous high profile acts of betrayal and treason: Hassan Akbar fragging 101st Airborne Troopers prior to the Iraq invasion.
Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun deserts and pops up in Lebanon in 2005. Ft. Dix NJ, 2007 Six Islamists arrested in plot to attack New Jersey. Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad shoots up recruiting station in 2009.Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan posts pro-suicide bomber materiel on the internet and says attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan are justified prior to shooting rampage at Ft. Hood.

Yah, I’m a rasssis & hater for noticing a pattern here…

defendUSA

Okay…Jonn, I agree with you. Ft. Hood was a sucky place.

But, even so, the people who ignored Hasan’s colleagues complaints of what he was saying should be feeling some fucking guilt, too. I’m sure they aren’t going down in flames, but this could have been prevented. To me, it’s fucking treason of the highest order.

Political correctness has no place when you are fighting a fucking war and someone who is of known Muslim faith is talking shit. From the top down, if the goddamn policy says (wah!) no picking on anyone for their beliefs, that is utter bullshit. This guy spewed it, they ignored it and now you have dead people and wounded who may not recover mentally. WTF.

Either vet them harder, or don’t even let them in as long as we are fighting them. This bastard was Muslim. First, last, and always.

CRaissi

Yeah, I discounted the fanaticism/terrorist motivation when I didn’t see any evidence to support that and saw things pointing in the other direction, but that new information released this morning is pretty compelling. Even the rabidly liberal Huffington Post is reporting the latest information regarding an Islamic motivation.

Here is their article:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/06/robert-cone-nidal-malik-h_n_348145.html

Here is a screenshot of their main page. The “allah akbar” thing is the first under the main headline:

CRaissi

It isn’t about hating a group of people because you see a pattern, it is about jumping to premature conclusions without evidence. If all you need to see is a Middle Eastern last name to conclude that that person must have been motivated by Islam, then you’ve got a problem. If, on the other hand, the evidence pertaining to that case draws you inexorably to that conclusion, then there is no conflict. Things are what they are.

The Sniper

JuniorAG and defendUSA… you racists. How dare you imply that the people that have commited most of the major terrorist acts in the past three decades could possibly be linked to this? Muslims are people just like you and me. I mean, I have a bumper sticker on my car that says “my kid is an honor student at County Elementary school” and a Muslim family in our neighborhood has a bumpoer sticker that says “my kid’s the bomb at the Islamic School.” Basically the same thing.

Spade

If it was the pogue thing wouldn’t there be instances of IVAW members shooting things?

Just A Grunt

Hey I loved Ft Hood. When I was there it was just the 1st Cav so we had the whole place to ourselves. When I left they were still trying to figure what name they were going to give the unit moving in bringing it back up to 2 divisions on post.

Anyway this was a case of sudden jihad syndrome IMHO and all the talking heads can spend endless hours promoting their own self importance and expertise on the subject, which I am sure his defense lawyers will duly note when it comes time to call witnesses.

YatYas

It seems that some of the media are trying to spin this hard that Hasan was a victim too, without coming right out and calling him one. All the talk of possible PTSD, name calling by colleagues and not being allowed to resign from the Army. It seems hard to believe this Doctor and Officer while at Walter Reed did not have someone to file a complaint with and that a hammer would not have slammed on the heads of those making the comments. Yea right, in today’s PC world.

OldTrooper

While there is a case for not jumping to conclusions, CR, what has been the MO for the msm so far? They jumped on PTSD like a dog to a bone. As for assuming something based purely on the name of the POS……Yeah, ya got us there. I won’t deny that once I heard the name, actually before I even heard it, I had the thought in the back of my melon. Is that right? It doesn’t matter, because as humans, we become conditioned when there is a pattern. If we look back to just the recent past, we have the Ft. Dix plot, the recruiter shooting, The Colorado/NY plot, The jewish synagogue NY plot, the Texas mall plot, etc. All actors with a specific tying thread.

So, even as critical thinking people, we are creatures of habit, no matter who we are or how hard we try to fight it. Trying to be outside of that in order to appear more intelligent only makes a person more naive. That some have resorted to calling others racists doesn’t make a specific point, or refute an argument, it only deflects. That the JAG on LKL was try to posit another angle and was jumped on as racist didn’t do anything to move the discussion forward, or lend any credibility to the arguments of those calling him a racist. It was meant as a deflection based on the politically correct fears of even thinking about his religious/ethnic background being part of the reason.

We have become more interested in staying away from certain aspects in order to appear PC that we have dumbed ourselves down to what truths or possibiliteis are out there. More so, because we don’t really want to know or believe it.

CB

He could have resigned his commission at any time. He made a concience choice to take lives.
Try him and fry him.

CB

PTSD??? PRE-Traumatic Stress Disorder??? That dog won’t hunt.

TSO

CR, I sent you an email if that is an actual email addy. Just wanted to discuss semi-offline.

OT, good point above.

My mind also went there immediately. A few people I talked to (not my cobloggers) said they first checked IVAW’s member section when they heard the name. Now, sure, this isn’t the “right” way that these things should happen. Agreed. I for one never suspected the IVAW angle.

Marilyn

You know what, people? Evil exists and some embrace it — I’m so damn tired of this poor me it’s not my fault they were mean to me crap!! Good people are dead and hurt — and he pulled the trigger of his own free will — evil!!!

AW1 Tim

The only good that I see right now, is the virtual certainty this guy will have a table, a needle, and a cocktail of chemicals waiting for him in the not-too-distant future.

It won’t undo the damage, but it will ensure he can’t hurt anyone ever again.

Dave Thul

He brought two weapons and plenty of extra ammo. He was calm during the attack, except when he yelled ‘Allah’. He choose an indoors location that virtually guaranteed a large number of soldiers in a confined space.

But the most damning in my mind-he hit the SRP, which means he killed soldiers who were getting ready to deploy to Iraq and A-stan.

I don’t see how this was not terrorism.

Nancy

Something repeatedly missed whenever there are one of these mass shootings is what kinds of medications the shooters have been on. It never comes out right away, but if you go back and look, you’ll see every single one was on some kind of pscyh drug and usually had stopped taking it cold turkey. At least every one that I’ve ever looked up or kept track of.

The Army seems to be in the habit of handing out brain drugs instead of using real treatment. Any bets on what kinds of drugs the shooters were on yesterday? Zoloft? Xanax? Topomax? Lamictal? Celexa? A whole cocktail of pharmaceutical drugs designed to drive you insane?

OldTrooper

Well, Nancy, since he would be the one prescribing them; who knows?

TSO

Aren’t we all Kokesh fans though?

I know I am.

UpNorth

Thanks Jonn, saves me from asking her what her source was that this douche was on ANY drugs. Seems she was just trying to lay groundwork for a defense and apologizing in advance for the acts of a murderer.
But, I will ask one question of her, if she dares to pop back up. Cite your sources for the statement that “you’ll see every single one was on some kind of pscyh drug”, in regards to mass shootings.

Claymore

I read where among this retard’s other problems, he was upset that at age 39, he had no wife. When I mentioned that to my better half, she replied, “This turd was nothing but a giant pussy-ass loser at life, so he decided to take it out on the world.” Don’t think I can add a single thing to that.

AW1 Tim

Sounds to me like he was drunk on Allah’s Kool-Aid.

ThisIsDefinitelyHell

Jonn I know you love brandishing your shiny CIB around, but let’s get real: you are currently a fat, wrinkled, worthless individual–a “cheesy pogue pussy,” if you will, who sits in his lazy boy pumping lies and ignorant bullshit to his readers. Question: did you get picked on a lot at school?

infantryjj

“It is a man’s own mind, not his enemy or foe, that lures him to evil ways.”

Just A Grunt

ThisIsDefinitelyHell Says:

So what exactly is your point?? Are you saying having a CIB disqualifies you somehow from commenting on items related to the military. What about those of us who don’t have one?

This guy had a ‘come to Allah’ moment and unfortunately he suffered from pre mature jihadist interuptus, but I hope this shrink wrapped psycho gets a lot of visitors in prison and not the kind who sign the visitor log.

defendUSA

This(guy)isdefinitelyadick:
It’s people like you who should have had a can or two o’whoopass opened up on them to cure your diarrhea of the mouth. It won’t cure what ails YOU, unfortunately, but it would make the rest of us feel infinitely better to be able to shut your pansy ass up. Know what I mean, Vern?

OldTrooper

Jonn, thanks for the tip on Nancy. I guess the drugs would work different than prescribed when you wash them down with Gin and Vodka ala Kokesh?

JuniorAG

“he was upset that at age 39, he had no wife.” Umm… Lots of them don’t seem to like the Ladies much, ahem, in that culture. Us Afghan vets recall man-boy love Thursday in Kandahar.

Casey J Porter

Jonn, Nancy is not a Kokesh fan.

Tired

I’m so tired of the Left trying to dictate the terminology and structure of every g*damn conversation in this country. This “Shoshana Johnson” woman in that video needs to eat a nice big plate of STFU. 19 Saudis on 9/11, but GOD FORBID we even tentatively draw the conclusion that MAYBE we should pay a little more attention, when the circumstances suggest, to a muslim with an arab surname than to, say my mom who weighed about 98 pounds soaking wet, and got stopped every time she got on a plane. My 70 year old mom, who couldn’t fight her way out of a paper bag, they pull aside and search and do the metal detector thing on. And yet healthy males (of all sorts of ethnic backgrounds, white, black, arab, asian, whatever) pass right the fk on through. Good job TSA, thanks for keeping us all safe from my mom feebly swinging her purse at us all…

Cultural sensitivity my ass. It wasn’t 19 NORWEGIANS that attacked this country on 9/11. This presumption that America is a racist monster nation and is a bigger threat than Jihad is Orwellian Doublethink–it is EVIL and it is LIES.

The Left are the hatemongering, fascist bigots in 21st century America, and they won’t stop until they have total control over everything we do, eat, say and think from dawn until dusk in this country.

Well, we will just see about that, won’t we.

thebronze

Dr. Phil and Shoshanna Johnson are buffoons.

RadicalAntifederalist

“he was upset that at age 39, he had no wife.” Hmmm… We American girls don’t like burkas all that much. We also don’t care for the whole seventy virgins in the afterlife type stuff – competition and all that, we just can’t handle it. Sheesh, there I go, being all narrow again! No doubt I’ll have to be sent through sensitivity training all over again.
