Weekend Open Thread

| October 27, 2023

Many leftists don’t see how all of these “good intentions” initiatives like those needed to “fight” the “climate crisis,” going cashless, the beginnings of a social credit system, etc., do not have good outcomes. The Chinese already have a social credit system. A lot of their transactions are consolidated on a single account, an account that could be shut down if their social credit score goes down too far. Luckily, there are more than enough critical thinking people in the U.S. who see through that scheme and fight against the dystopia that many think would be a utopia. Enjoy your weekend!

First!

KoB

The keys to the Throne Room and the Trappings of Power, Good Sir! Well Played. I place all the blame upon the sketchiness of my inherwebz today and the perseverance of your endeavors to capture the Crown. Now, pass me the comics section!

Commissioner Wretched

Here you go, King … you’d be surprised at what Dick Tracy is up to these days.

KoB

Only Tess Truelove knows for sure what Dick is up to these days.

KoB

FIRST!??…A twofer or will the Magic Screwball use his outdated Red Hat Software to steal the Gun Bunny’s Thunder? Will CW’s 26 leaden Soldiers March to the sound of the guns and capture the Throne Room? Persevering means endeavoring…The Prize is worth the struggle…for real!

Commissioner Wretched

I think I beat you by three seconds, King …

Thunderstixx

In the WOT, three seconds is an eternity…

Hack Stone

Hack Stone was traversing the highways and byways of the National Capital Region in his advertising wrapped 1980’s vintage Jaguar when the Weekend Open Thread dropped. If it wasn’t for that darned traffic, climate change and Donald Trump, Hack would have arrived at his destination in time to regain his title. Commissioner Wretched can expect his coronation to be accompanied a mostly peaceful riot of Hack Stone supporters who want to make This Ain’t Hell deplorable again.

Sparks

LOL! Bummer KoB! I mean, that’s a bummer man. Maybe just type FIRST and let the rest go until you are basking in the glory.

KoB

Thanks, Sparks, it’s all good. Might want to quit giving a 10 count before hitting the “Post Comment” button too. Just trying to keep it sporting. Ain’t like I haven’t hit FIRST a time or 2. Inherwebz has been sketchy as all hell and a lot of incoming over the last several days.

Some sad news, BiL Charles struck the tent and crossed over The River to rest ‘neath The Shade of The Tree this past week. Charley and Sister Margaret were together for 64 years, begat 4 kids, 12 grandkids, and 16 ggrand kids, all good mid-western stock with a Georgia Peach Flavor. I put Sister on a Delta Bus to be with Margaret and remained in the rear echelon mode to watch over fur babies and the Firebase/COPs. That means I am currently unsupervised…could get cereal.

Charley was an (GO) Army Vet (Signal), assorted livestock rancher, farmer, a pillar of the Community, and all around damn good man. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him.

I post a Paul Harvey “rest of the story” piece on how important being a farmer was. Charley was “that guy”. Rest easy, Brother Charles, I’ll see you again on the other side.

Commissioner Wretched

My deepest condolences on your loss, my friend.

KoB

Thanks, CW. Charley was your kinda man. I think he had a prescription for just about every newspaper within a 100 miles of home. Read every word in ’em and wouldn’t hesitate to call or write the editors, bringing them to task on sloppy reporting.

Odie

Sorry to hear of your loss.

KoB

Thanks, Odie, muchly appreciated!

President Elect Toxic Deplorable Racist SAH Neande

Signal
“You can talk about us, but you can’t talk without us”
He’s now practicing radio silence. RIP

Silent key. God bless him.

KoB

The wire rat in him stung a C Wire from the house to the barns and shops on the farm. Not so he could receive traffic, but in case he had to make outgoing traffic and didn’t want to take the time to walk back to the house. Seed, feed, fertilizer, and tractor parts ain’t gonna order themselves. Thanks, SFC D!

Prolly got him a get over gig as comm rat for Saint Pete. Thanks, Tox!

Graybeard

Oh, no. Sounds like you had a treasure of a BiL, KoB.
And it sounds like God filled his quiver richly.
May the God of all comfort wrap His arms around each of you as you grieve with hope.

KoB

Couldn’t have a better one if you’d have special ordered from a Sears Catalog or had him custom built by Sky Net. He was my all time favorite BiL. He built a good life thru hard work and his fruitfulness caused much multiplying. You know when you hear in the Church or local charity about an anonymous donation made for this project or another He was “that guy”, too. We rest assured that we will meet him again…on the other side.

Thanks, Graybeard.

Blaster

God bless and Godspeed Kob! To be a Signal branch GO is just little more impressive than most other GOs. It’s a very small branch and the inverted triangle is a bit more steep! You and yours are are in the Blaster AO prayers (AND since we are signal, we have the IP address locked in better than most😉😎!)

The only promise we have on this earth is death. It comes for us all and we (hardly) ever know when. Hug that hug, kiss that kiss and say “I love you” like it’ll be the last time, because it may just be!

Prayers brother!!

Blaster

I left out that I lost my BiL in 2012. However, he wasn’t just my BiL, he was also one of my
Closest and oldest BEST friends. The best man at my wedding and always the one I looked to for advice (he several years my senior). In-law doesn’t always equal animosity!

KoB

Thanks, Blaster, I’ll pass this and the others along to the family. In the calls back and forth I let them know how the TAH Family stepped up. They were all humbly appreciative. Having lost family, compatriots and friends to sudden and lingering death from a very early age, I make it a point to pass the love and hugs on to everyone, each time we part.

Some clarification…Charles was not a General Officer, tho he could have been. Or a SarMaj. He had a BS in Ag & Business when he was drafted in ’57. The (GO) Army should have been followed up by a (BEAT) Navy. He could have gotten a deferment from the draft for several legit reasons, his position (day job) with the BIA on the Rez was considered critical since the Feds were really trying to get the Rez Natives more self sufficient with commercial farming of grains, the fact that he was a farmer and livestock rancher on his section of land much of his product being counted on to feed the nation, and/or his only other brother was already serving in the ETO. He was told all of that when he reported for induction. He was also offered an OCS slot at that time. Turned down the OCS slot and said he was willing and wanting to serve for the 2 years. Graduated near the top of his class in Signal School as a PFC and was offered a slot for NCO Shake and Bake Course. Turned that down too. The Signal School Colonel snagged him to be part of the Training Cadre and he spent his entire tour of duty @ Fort Gordon.

You are correct, too, in that sometimes married into the family is more better than blood family.

Fyrfighter

Sorry for your loss KOB

KoB

Thanks, Fyr. Charley was your kinda man too. Very strong supporter of the local Volly Fire Dprt and pushed to get paid on duty people. The Village that is close by his section of farmland only has about 1K people total, and the county only has 6K, most of those being on the Rez Natives. As of today, his obit website has had 1520+ visits…and probably more than that in cards to his home. Took over 2 hours for all the folks in the viewing line to pass thru at the viewing. Enough food was brought for the after funeral dinner to feed, if not an Army, at least a re-enforced Brigade. The local Veterans Organizations provided a Color Guard and a Firing Detail.

Returning to the throne, I marvel at the care with which the King of Battle has taken to keep the Throne Room beautiful! Well done, my friend! To you, I tip my cap … to all, I open the larders wide … as well as the beverage stocks. And, as a garnish, some trivia! Enjoy!

DID YOU KNOW…?
Is the U.S. government still actively collecting information on UFOs?

So I have one more week to find the perfect costume for Halloween. I don’t go trick-or-treating, not at my age. And I don’t generally participate in the other part of the annual candy extortion – giving it away to any costumed kid who comes to my door.

Why, then, do I need a costume?

I don’t, actually. Seeing as how I never even go to Halloween parties, a costume serves no actual purpose.

But it’s fun to play dress-up, isn’t it? It’s a release, a way to shake off some of the doldrums. And as I say, it’s fun.

Any good costume tips? Send them to me at the e-mail address above. And stand by for another week’s worth of fun trivia!

Did you know …

… a fictional character was once honored by a prestigious royal society? In 2002, the Royal Society of Chemistry in the United Kingdom bestowed an “Extraordinary Honorary Fellowship” on Sherlock Holmes, the famous fictional detective. The award was made on the 100th anniversary of the publication of The Hound of the Baskervilles, the most famous Holmes adventure, by Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle (1859-1930). (It was elementary, my dear Watson. Elementary.)

Commissioner Wretched

… the brown recluse is not the most venomous spider in the world? Sure, a bite from a brown recluse will cause you a lot of pain and a lot of damage, but there’s at least one that’s worse. The male Sydney funnel-web spider of Australia has the most toxic venom to humans. They can be from ½ inch to 2 inches long, dark in color, and they build silk-lined tubular burrows with funnel entrances. A bite from one of these spiders is very, very painful, and is considered a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment. Death can result in as little as 15 minutes. That’s the bad news. The good news is, they’re only found in and around Sydney, Australia. (It’s only good news if you yourself aren’t in or around Sydney, that is.)

… kissing can help reduce tooth decay? The reason is the production of extra saliva, which helps in keeping the mouth clean. (I’d research that, but finding someone to kiss is not always easy.)

… you may suffer from coulrophobia? If you do, don’t ever go to the circus. Coulrophobia is the fear of clowns. (I’d avoid Washington, D.C., too, if I were you.)

… 66% of people eat cereal regularly? (Which makes you wonder how the remaining 34% eat it … irregularly? Strangely? Upside down?)

… during World War II, the Germans developed a chocolate bomb? The device was a bomb made of thin steel and covered with chocolate. It was designed to explode seven seconds after a piece was broken off. (The worst part was where they marketed it as a diet aid. Now that’s just evil, right there.)

Hack Stone

Recently Hack Stone has some Facebook postings about individuals who pour the milk into the bowl followed by the cereal. Never saw anyone who does that, nor would Hack like to associate with anyone who perform this crime against mankind.

Sparks

Blaster

I just told Blaster-6 about the kissing for oral health! I said to do it correctly, we had “to get all up in there”!

She said “eeewww” !!

Did you set me up for failure?

Commissioner Wretched

Well, I didn’t suggest how one should go about it, just that it helps. The rest of it, you’re on your own.

Commissioner Wretched

… despite official denials, the U.S. government is still actively collecting information on unidentified flying objects? The last official public U.S. probe into UFOs ended in 1969 with the closing of the Air Force’s Project Blue Book. But since then, documents released under the Freedom of Information Act have shown that the FBI, CIA, National Security Agency, Defense Intelligence Agency, and each branch of the military have continued collecting information on the objects. In 2021, the government finally admitted to the actual existence of UFOs – though they maintain that they don’t know what they really are, despite conspiracy theories to the contrary. (They do, however, have some suspicions.)

… there are no female peacocks? The peacock is a male peafowl. Females are called peahens.

… German beer was originally hallucinogenic? It contained an ingredient called henbane, which was banned in 1516. (Now it’s just the alcohol which causes hallucinations.)

… the first Hollywood stunt woman made her debut in 1914? Helen Gibson (1892-1977) performed stunt work in the first 26 episodes of the movie serial The Hazards of Helen that year. Gibson did the stunts for the serial’s star, Helen Holmes (1892-1950). Gibson was a trained trick horse rider and was also the wife of cowboy film star Edmund “Hoot” Gibson (1892-1962). (I guess Helen Gibson gave a “hoot” about her work. I’ll show myself out.)

… no such place as “Never-Never Land” is mentioned in Peter Pan? Written by novelist James M. Barrie (1860-1937), the book calls the place where children go with Peter Pan simply “Neverland.” (As opposed to real life, which is “ItNeverEnds-land.”)

SFC D

If that peacock feels that he’s a peahhen, then by gum, he IS one! Who are you to deny them their appropriate gender! How un-woke!

Now, if you will excuse me, I need to go rinse my mouth. I threw up just a little.

Blaster

So,,,still studying UFOs, but can’t define a woman! Crazy!!

Commissioner Wretched

To be fair, they can’t define what a UFO is, either.

Commissioner Wretched

… the first person to see the planet Saturn through a telescope thought it had ears? In 1610, Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) viewed the planet Saturn through his early telescope. The instrument did not have very great magnifying power, and the beautiful rings that encircle the planet looked rather like bumps on either side. In a letter to fellow astronomer Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), Galileo said Saturn appeared to have “ears” or “handles,” and he referred to the planet as being “triple bodied.” (Now there’s a heavenly body!)

… a President of the United States was once a hangman? Grover Cleveland (1837-1908), 22nd and 24th President, was the Sheriff of Erie County, New York, from 1871 to 1873. During that time frame, in his capacity as Sheriff, Cleveland had to “spring” the trap at two hangings. Additional trivia note: Cleveland goes into the history books as 22nd and 24th President because his two terms were non-consecutive. The term of the 23rd President, Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901), was between the two Cleveland terms.

… the most productive day of the work week is Tuesday? (Well, it sure ain’t Monday.)

My BiL and SiL are on a work vacation to Europe. Work started in Monaco, vacation started in Germany and Switzerland. The pics sent to us showed HUGE mugs of beer. I can imagine how the conversation goes when the guy tells his wife he’s stopping for a couple of beers after work.

The scenery was drop dead gorgeous as well.

SFC D

You oughta see the barmaids at Oktoberfest carrying 5 or 6 1 liter mugs in each hand. Mugs are like 2 pounds apiece empty.

Odie

They rented a vw suv, and had a pic of the speedometer. It showed 198 kph. My math tells me about 120 mph, and he said they were still getting passed. His wife was fine with it for awhile. He slowed down to average speed of about 85mph, like most other were driving. He did say 120 was a comfortable speed, and the vw wasn’t breaking a sweat. Apparently it’s not something they offer here, he didn’t say the model name.

-Hate the police, but complain about them not getting there fast enough when some homeless drug addict smashes their female friend in the face with a rock as they walk past the homeless camp that they protested in favor of,
-hate their parents for having them,
-hate themselves for being the wrong gender,
-hate guns- but know nothing of them and are in favor of lunatics walking the streets (see the above comment about the female friend getting her face smashed),
-doesn’t like meat or meat eaters,

The lies, false claims, and fearmongering don’t end,
with this serial liar conman,
now busy in 2023 preying on the fears of elderly, retired,
and other survivalist types,
to sell them books, overpriced survival food ($177 marked up to $444),
and making delay excuses with giant claims
to soon sell gadgets
that will protect home, car, phones, and electronics
from a WW3 Russia / China EMP attack.

Of course, his long pitch videos claim this attack is “imminent”.

Yet, books take weeks to arrive, or never arrive at all.
This book OPERATION BLACKOUT promises “plans” and “instructions”
while providing none,
only a pointer to his NEW website to BUY more crap.

And of course, his promised gadgets are still NOT YET available,
because they aren’t even made yet.
Worse, whatever he soon produces (and sells)
can never meet his ridiculously false “protection” claims.

Today, he is claiming this sham of a book is nearing sales of 100,000.

over every sales pitch he makes (to his “patriots”),
while STILL spinning phony war tales
“almost lost a leg in Afghanistan” and more….
and all while STILL sitting in front of those MF 13 medals.

MarineDad61

Another phony claim today.
“I’ve killed terrorists before, and slept like a baby.”

Well, we know that’s not the case,
and it’s certainly not what he told the VA hospital after ETS,
gaming his way into 100% VA disability
(NOT for physical injuries (hint)).

Then parlaying that into SS disability (fraud?),
putting his signature to “unable to do any kind of work”.

Yet able to subsequently create companies
for pot manufacturer security and transport,
get PI licenses in at least 3 counties of PA
(poor regulation and oversight),
run for US Congress,
run for PA Lt. Governor,
and now in 2023,
running a wide con of selling books, food,
and (still not available) electronic gadgets.

You know, all because WW3 and EMP attack
from Russia and China is so “imminent”.

He’s worse of a conman than George Santos from NY,
except he couldn’t win a GOP primary.
And worse than the VG outed phonies,
who never admit, never apologize, and never improve.

And don’t get me started (again)
about his free house from a wounded veteran charity.
That charity has since removed all mention of him,
giving him the free home, or delivering the family groceries.
But the TV news story survives on the internet.

Have any other commenters in this place ever decided to quit drinking?

My midlife crisis hasn’t been to buy a Miata, Corvette, or 2-3 series BMW, it’s been to stop the vice.

Just wondering if anyone else had that same “thang”.

QMC

Can’t even get a buzz anymore. Just godawful headaches and hangovers. Kicked it this past year.

Odie

I quit several years ago. CDL license drops B.A.C to .4 when in operation of commercial vehicle. I wasn’t taking a chance for some cop to see a CDL, and hold me to that standard while driving my personal vehicle.

Got a govt. job that required a CDL, and their tolerance was zero. I saw a couple people lose their job over a dui.

You mention miata, and not wanting one, but have you ever heard of a company called monster miata? 5.0 ( non coyote) ford or LS swap could be a lot of fun.

MustangCPT

The Monster Miata! I remember that from almost 30 years ago. Ford EFI 5.0 Mustang engine with the Mazda R5 5-speed manual transmission. I was all for it since Mazda was owned by Ford. Kind of like a Shelby Cobra in concept…little car with a big engine.

MarineDad61

JustALurkin,
I’ve got a “thang” now.
I’ve got my eye on a BMW 4 series
all wheel drive coupe OR hardtop convertible.
With a turbo inline 4 cylinder.

Certainly not a mid life “thang”.
More like a comfortable, fuel efficient, and sporty set of wheels,
to replace my current (aging)
comfortable, sporty, but premium fuel thirsty Mercedes CLK.

Something like this. 🙂

I haven’t quit, but the reduction in my alcohol consumption after divorcing the first wife is astounding. Used to be over a case of Miller Lite per week, plus a lot of rum. Now, a 12 pack lasts over 2 weeks and if I have more than 2 beers in one day, it’s rare. Less consumption, but better quality. Works for me!

I quit drinking for about a year as part of a weight loss program. At the time I had already bought a 2014 Corvette. Started moderately drinking again in 2017. I now have a Miata as well.
