Newest mass shooting checks all the lib boxes

| October 28, 2023

On Wednesday in Lewiston, Maine,  Robert Card, 40,  killed 18 and injured another 13 when he shot up a bowling alley and restaurant. Pearls are firmly grasped, knickers are twisted, and all the usual gun control tropes (we simply MUST ban those scary assault weapons!) are being trotted out.

Mr. Card is evidently a FIREARMS INSTRUCTOR! He is ARMY TRAINED, a VETERAN. (as an instructor at a Reserves unit, I tend to suspect he was selected either because he volunteered, or because wasn’t there to decline. Would love to see what actual training he  got.) He also was referred to psychiatric evaluation earlier this year – and released after two weeks – but this is somehow a reflection on “American gun culture.

Police identified the suspect as Robert Card, 40, a firearms instructor trained by the military and recently committed to a mental health facility.

Card has been trained as a firearms instructor at a U.S. Army Reserve training facility in Maine, according to a bulletin shared Wednesday by authorities with the Associated Press.  Yahoo News

The news is full of the hysteria…even Stephen King is weighing in tweeting about the “rapid fire killing machines”.

Turns out Card is an 18 year reservist. A POL specialist. No deployments, (how did his unit miss that since 2002?) no combat, and no PTSD justification “well, there was that time the fuel bowser overflowed and we had to clean up almost 10 gallons” that I can see. It is worth noting that earlier in the year his superiors recommended him for mental evaluation after he was noted behaving erratically this summer -but he was kicked loose with no apparent limitations.

Kamala and PINO Joe are already calling for an assault weapons ban because Card apparently used an AR-15 clone of some variety or other. You AR owners…you should be ashamed! By your owning an AR you CAUSED this poor, otherwise saintly man, to snap. Had you only stuck to lever-actions  no one would have died. You bastards…  No one is questioning the miserable failure of our mental  health system – or doctors.

Me, every time I read one of these I thank God the shooter ONLY used an AR-15. Lord only knows what the casualty count  would have been with an M-1, or an HK-93, or any other non-poodle-cartridged rifle. Probably closer to 31 dead, not 18 and 13 injured.

Mr. Card, as of this writing on Thursday is still in the wind. I suspect by the time this comes out (looking like Saturday) he will have been run down, and if recent history is any indication, will probably kill himself as the cops close in. I just wish for once the shooter could get the order right – instead of killing a bunch of people and then killing himself, he needs to reverse that order.

And HE DEAD.

They and the FBI were involved… for a local maniac doing a state crime, just hoping he had written a manifesto or targeted some proggie-favored group so it could be “terrorism” or something.

President Elect Toxic Deplorable Racist SAH Neande

And were the “hearing voices” hearing aids on him? Or did they….disappear?

26Limabeans

They found him dead at a recycling facility he used to work at.
Toss him in the shredder. Or the bailer. Or…use your imagination.

Anonymous

Nothing unusual, just butthurt– he got fired from his job and went off his nut.

5JC

Butt hurt people don’t usually hear voices telling them to shoot up military bases. That happened before he got fired.

Anonymous

Butthurt + nuts = bad combination

Card wasn’t playing with a full deck and they carded him away in a body bag.

MarineDad61

26L,
What, and spoil the recycle value of a metal, alloy, or other recyclable?

Dirty (mixed) brass gets only 20% value of (mostly) pure brass.
Baling him in with the cardboard or dairy plastic,
turns the wired bale from scrap to trash/junk.
Not even fit to burn.

I understand your concerns. Hell, I seperate all my metals
from the bulk of my trash each time I visit the County
Recyclable center maybe once every couple months.
Wednesdays they open the scales for general public and
have various bins for metals, a/c units, fridgerators etc.
but I don’t see one for useless rabid animals like the one
we are dealing with here.
Need a seperate bin.

Odie

As the sign at my BiL house says, I have an AR and a backhoe. No separate bin needed, but it does help to have a farm, or access to.

MarineDad61

26L,
Not far from this area of PA is Valley Proteins.
It’s where all the large roadkill goes, like deer.
VP also takes in all the diseased and dead farm animals.
VP has the giant muncher,
that chews up cows, horses, and more.

(Other munchers shown on YouTube videos.
Do not watch the muncher videos after a good meal.)

He is stiff in the breeze.

QMC

It’s my fault.

None of these would happen anymore, if I would just post a virtue signaling video of me destroying my scary AR-15.

Fm2176

I beat you to the punch. I took the example of a fellow Virginian and did the exact same to my AR-556 MPR: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.13newsnow.com/amp/article/news/local/mycity/virginia-beach/atf-investigating-after-congressional-candidate-cut-apart-ar-15/291-526898428

Also, I guess I’m an asshole even subconsciously. The displays were running low, so I put out 50 guns over the past two days. I ended up putting out every “MSR” we have, including PCCs and rimfire lookalikes. There’s a bunch of Black Rain, Ruger, and S&W ARs out now, plus CMMG, LWRC, FN, and others.

Bad timing, or good for retail? A Ruger SFAR sold hours after I put it on display.

Fyrfighter

Well, this will be front page for a while.. unless it comes out that he voted for biden, then it’ll be memory holed faster than the manifesto of the tranny school shooter, or the entire story of the Vegas shooter…

5JC

The thing I am curious about is he was allegedly a prohibited person at a federal level. If true, why was he still in the Army reserve?

rgr769

I suspect they were still doing the paperwork. In my reserve unit, out unit full-time “technician” would have taken four or five months to figure out what paperwork was needed and how to process it. From the looks of the dude’s beard, it is obvious he hadn’t been a MUTA in quite a while.

Not “terrorism” when Democrat did it.

Odie

POL specialist (fuel truck driver). Did JP4 fumes scramble his apparently already addled brain?

Anonymous

Huffing JP8, perhaps? (That’d be even less fun.)

Top W Kone

He likely avoided deployment because as a reservist in a low density MOS the unit most likely is way under staffed and never reached the minimum requirements to get sourced.

I wonder if he spent time in a training unit or training support that mission is state side.

fm2176

Quite possibly, he was sent to the Range Safety Officer course at whichever installation they qualify at. That basically makes him a small arms expert and certified instructor in everything up to the MK19. I mean, at West Point, it was an hour-long video. At Fort Stewart, I can’t even remember the training. At Benning, it was a few hours all about the red-cockaded woodpecker and how to avoid getting a hefty fine, along with ensuring that we occupied land and had a radio for primary comms. At AP Hill, it was about four hours but otherwise similar to Benning’s.

A Proud Infidel®™

During my time on Benning in the early 90’s it was rumored that among the Officers, thaey had a recipe book for dishes involving the Red Cockaded Woodpecker.

Odie

This part will never make the news. He was a white male, had an assault weapon, and was a republican. OK, I made that last part up, just like the news does. But 2 out of 3 fit the narrative.

Anonymous

They’re hopeful, you know.

5JC

Under the new definition of mass shootings, black males are most responsible for mass shootings.

rgr769

I watched an interview with one of his fellow reservists who said he was a helluva shot with the M16 or M4.

SFC D

I’m guessing he was no more a “shooting instructor” than any other range safety officer qualified NCO. But, the MSM gotta do what they do.

rgr769

Fox is again reporting that this loser was “a firearms instructor.”

SFC D

Technically true but seriously pushing the definition.

KoB

The whole thing stinks to high Heaven. PyOps, false flag, gunz grab, nutjob manipulated? who knows? No big surprise here that he offed himself. Big Country Expate has some good intel (or conspiracy theories YMMV) on his site, along with some others. My sympathies to the families of the ones killed by all of this and speedy complete recoveries wished for the wounded. To me, this is just one more example of the need to carry, concealed, EVERY.WHERE.YOU.GO! And be “Prepare” to use your CC. The details keep changing but the narrative doesn’t. “Evil MAGA Whyte dood with an evil scary blaque assault rifle goes on murderous rampage to do his evil RAYYYCISSS Act.” The FeeBees certainly got there awfully fast for their office being 100+ miles away.

I do know this…that thar is one more pretty in pink dangerous weapon pictured above. The rifle is cute, too. Wonder if Ms Thang would like to help me with my preventive dental care (ht2 CW)?

President Elect Toxic Deplorable Racist SAH Neande

Ms Thang in pink could help you at the North Wall.

Not sure about the conceal carry laws in Maine, but it seems to me his rampage might have been curtailed if more people were carrying. Not enough details yet.

jeff LPH 3 63-66

I said that to my friend last night

Anonymous

Why Columbine happened in the suburbs and not the inner-city– much less likely for folk to be packin’ and shoot back.

26Limabeans

Personal cc in Maine is legal and a permit reasonably obtained.
The owner of the business has the last word and the laws are
written to leave it up to them.
Yeah, if only one or more of the patrons had been armed.

5JC

I have doubts. A man runs into a crowded bar and empties a magazine and runs back out. That can happen in 5 seconds. That is barely enough time to even process what is happening much less respond.

5JC

The other thing is that Maine is a very safe state. Due to demographics they have the lowest murder and violent crime rate in the US. Until this week there had never been a non-domestic mass shooting anywhere in the state, ever. I imagine most people don’t carry because they don’t feel it necessary.

26Limabeans

I stopped carrying a few years ago because as you
said most people “don’t feel it necessary”.
This horrible crime has me re thinking that assessment.
Ruger LCR .357 mag loaded with .38spl +P laser grip.
Very comfortable in a Galco H159L even just floating
around loose in an inside pocket.
Winter coats wil be the norm in a few weeks.

5JC

I live in a state with one of the highest murder rates in the country. While I don’t anticipate trouble I go armed everywhere I go. Sometimes my romantic interests are curious if this is due to PTSD or something. Just excessive caution and living a long time.

11B-Mailclerk

Respectfully, do you not wear a seatbelt because you are not in crashes often? No need for smoke detectors and extinguishers, because your house never burns?

Do you suppose one or more of the dead or wounded thought “Gee, I wish I hadn’t left my piece in my sock drawer.”…

That sidearm, all the training, mindset, etc, is worthless if your sidearm is not by your side, where it properly belongs.

If it is burdensome, downsize to a pocket pistol. Even a tiny gun can make a big difference. But don’t make that fatal mistake of assuming “It won’t happen to me, here. This is a safe place.”

It is only safe if you make it so.

Both places serve alcohol. So, by state law, both places are gun free zones.

Graybeard

Same condition in Texas if the establishment derives 51% or more of their income from alcohol.
I don’t go to those places.
I can’t carry in the nursing homes or hospitals, so I don’t.
Otherwise, I’ve pretty much got one on me everywhere.

From one article, “It was feared that Card would be able to survive in the wild thanks to the survival skills he learned while in the military…” Ugh… I think not. No way this clown went to SERE or anything more high-speed than BCT.

Pretty soon, he’ll be Ranger-qualified if not Delta. The libs love to run drive these stakes into the ground and break them off.

26Limabeans

They shut down deer hunting in surrounding towns.
No shit. If anything, they should have issued bonus permits
with extra credit for live capture.
And no neeed to dress the carcass…..

11B-Mailclerk

Do you tag it through the ear or lip?

And would it not be a hoot to see it tagged and tied to some hunters hickuptruck?

26Limabeans

Not specified, just “clearly visible” while transported
to a registration station. That ride would certainly
draw attention.

5JC

I think they were concerned about the police shooting the wrong person by mistake.

rgr769

Ditto. This dude (loony dud) did not have survival training in the Army Reserve. Even in Ranger School, the extent of our survival training consisted of showing us how to kill, clean and cook a chicken in an ammo can. However, I understand that a great many SF types go to SERE school now. I bet he really knew how to handle a pump nozzle, though.

SFC D

Interesting recipe. That’s assuming that Rangers always have an ammo can available.

rgr769

The can’s OD paint gave the chicken meat a unique flavor.

In the rifle companies I led, we used to pack around an empty M60 ammo can strapped to our ruck frames, as they were a waterproof, crushproof container for personal items. So, I had the can in the bush, but never a chicken.

SFC D

“The can’s OD paint gave the chicken meat a unique flavor.”

I was wondering that too.

26Limabeans

It’s Deer season. He knows (knew) that.
Glad he is no longer a threat.

Anonymous

Well, you know… they’re hoping for this kind of escaped veteran SERE inventiveness:

Graybeard

If I am correct, Airborne Son got more survival training in our Venturing Crew than in the military.
His superiority at camping comfortably in miserable conditions made him the envy of his peers.
I don’t think he had to gather his food at any time, but he was taught how and where and what.

The MSM and general population wouldn’t know someone qualified as any kind of instructor if their careers depended on it.

11B-Mailclerk

I spent many of my childhood summers at a YMCA camp with -outstanding- fieldcraft instructors. Add more via “Encounter Four” (local Outward Bound) and camping trips with a family that included plenty of rock climbing and such.

I liked the field, and thrived there. I like to think I did a decent job of teaching my fellow service peeps, because the above activities taught skills by teaching you to teach others.

But don’t -ever- correct a mex-am E-7 by saying “Sergeant, that ‘biner is caught in your shirt.”

“BEANER? BEANER?!? WTF?! “

Skivvy Stacker

Well, I’m keeping a close watch on my 9mm and .38 to make sure they don’t get out and start shooting people. God knows that guns kill people, and criminals just stand around and watch them “just go off for no reason.”

jeff LPH 3 63-66

I tell that to my friend who is a democrat and she tells me that she made a big mistake voting for Herr Bide because she listens to her kids out in Kalifornia. Mentioned the same to friends last night at the ice cream parlor where we have live music 3 days a week out doors. Back to carrying my 9MM Springfield XDe, with two 9 rd mags and with no butt, I have to keep pulling up my shorts. Belt too tight and it’s a little painfull. Oh well, butt I have to do it.

11B-Mailclerk

Suspenders work.

A Proud Infidel®™

Well, we know for sure that the mainstream mess media is owned and operated by the far-left wing which by now I’m absolutely sure is going full turbo on their assigned talking points i.e. “HE WAS A MAGA Republican bent on exterminating everyone with his *GASP!* Assault Rifle, …” Jeez-o Pete, I can’t watch any mainstream media news broadcast for more than a few minutes without wanting to puke from the propaganda and editorializing they put into their “coverage” as well as feeling my IQ Points drop while I watch. Okay, he was a POL Specialist, an MOS which has a very low ASVAB Score requirement. But hey, he WAS in Mental Health treatment, and they booted him, so don’t they need to ass-u-me some of the blame? I carry a firearm with me, it stays locked and loaded unless I’m giving it its weekly wipedown and oiling, and it has NEVER killed anyone. Alec Baldwin has killed more people than my entire Gun collection has, and ditto with Ted *HICCUP!* Kennedy’s driving!

Odie

https://t.co/pywFPvtoS7

Here’s an example of someone pointing out to the MSM how dumb they are.

rgr769

Thanks for that clip. It is classic, and one for the ages. The interviewee ends with saying MSDNC is “fake news and a piece of shit” before they could cut the feed.

fm2176

“Alec Baldwin has killed more people than my entire Gun collection has, and ditto with Ted *HICCUP!* Kennedy’s driving!”

Wish I could say the same, but most of my rifles are military surplus. Ol’ Mauser and Mosin might have seen each other on the Ostfront in 1944 for all I know, while Eddystone and Enfield could have seen some service on the Western Front in 1918 or 1943. Carcano was on the winning team throughout WWII, but his brother became infamous when someone sharing the name of a Louisiana Senator slumped down due to Carcano Brother’s alleged misdeed.

But seriously, I wonder how many, if any of my Mausers, Mosin-Nagants, Enfields, and other rifles might have seen combat. Given their age, condition, and location, I wouldn’t be surprised if my 1892 or 1897 Riot gun were used by law enforcement to take out a late-Old West outlaw or early Prohibition-era gangster or two.

Slow Joe

I didn’t click on this thread because of the picture.

BennSue

I’m shocked that across all news outlets NOTHING has been said since they found the body. Where is the outrage that occurred before he was found? Maybe it’s because the “firearms expert” story was bogus? Even my limited “expertise” could tell the guy had almost 0 gun experience because of how he held the weapon.
