Tuesday threefer: More Boxer, Military.com recipes, Russian weaseling

| August 22, 2023

Remember a few weeks back, on August 5, when I mentioned that after $200,000,000 in refitting, the USS Boxer was still unable to sail? Well, they tried again (less than 2 weeks later,  those clever Navy devils) on the 17th:

The Navy denied any issue with the amphibious assault ship, but video posted online by San Diego Web Cam, a social media account that monitors the harbor, showed smoke billowing from its superstructure as it moved across the water.

“We just had an engineering casualty — black smoke coming out the stacks,” the ship radioed Thursday afternoon — just hours after leaving her berth at Naval Station San Diego. San Diego Web Cam captured the radio exchange and spotted the smoke coming from the ship.

Military.com

Seems after years of trying, we finally caught up down to the Russians, whose infamous aircraft the Admiral Kuznetsov pukes black smoke like a teenaged coal-roller’s  PowerStroke.

Military.com is trying to alleviate the dining hall situation at Ft. Hood Cavazos by offering up prison tested recipes to help young service members eat better with only vending machines and snack shops available in their AO.

1. Jailhouse Tamales

Ingredients:

• One bag Fritos

• One bag Flamin’ Hot Cheetos

• Hot water

• Hot sauce

If you don’t have an electric kettle or other access to boiling water, you can still boil water. Just get a plastic trash can of water, and then follow ex-jewel thief Larry Lawton’s instructions on how to make a prison boiler (we recommend you just get an electric kettle).

Finely crunch up the chips and put them together in a single bag. Add only enough water to make a thick dough. Drain off excess liquid and roll the dough up inside the bag in the shape of a tamale. Let it rest for a few minutes, then eat with hot sauce.

Somehow, I just don’t see things like this as a solution. I will freely confess, though, that while I love tamales and hot sauce, and occasionally eat Frito pies, I did not actually TRY this. Military.com II

Seems the Rooshian Luna-25 moon landing occurred at a little higher velocity than originally intended.

After many months of delays caused by the country’s costly and reprehensible invasion of Ukraine, Russia’s Luna-25 mission finally set off this month to return the country to the surface of the Moon for the first time in 47 years.

According to a “preliminary analysis” by Rocosmos, the craft “switched to an off-design orbit” right before it crashed.

Futurism

Oops.

Supposedly, subsequent Luna-26 and Luna-27 missions are in the works, but there was a   47 year gap between -24 and -25, so who knows.  The good part, while we have caught up to Russia in naval coal-rolling, they seem to have caught up to us in weasel-speak. “Off-design orbit”? Or did they just hire a former Washington speechwriter?

BTW, later reports say the off-switch didn’t work and a thruster which was supposed to burn for less than 30 seconds burned for almost 90. Oops again…

Apropos of nothing: am I the only one who thinks it’s funny as hell that California is suffering from a storm named Hilary? Thank God the rest of us were spared 7 years ago.

nice attempt By the SanDiego webCam Bunch to show they’re inability to divulge classified details. By NOT focusing Their camera. The Navy asked them to Not show certain things. they proceeded to show them… in stunning 4k telephoto detail… and had some cameras shut down because of it. I told them so when I watched the USS Connecticut Bashing through the waves with her Nose Missing.

Name edited to protect PII.

America’s military in decline
Active duty personnel treated like crap
Russian space program still sucks

It’s like the 70’s all over again.

Who’d a thunk it? We’re coming out of two questionable wars, much like the ’70s, and Kabul in 2021 looked an awful lot like Saigon in 1975. There’s a demented D in the White House and a previous President is being treated worse than “Not a Crook Nixon” ever was.

Glad I did my time. Met a lot of friends and outstanding people in two decades, but I’m equally glad to be retired and hiding behind a DD-214. I never received my flag or certificate, but considering the current CinC’s signature would have been on the latter, they can keep it.

“It’s like the 70’s all over again.”

Yeah, I like the 70s!! I loved chicks from the 1970s …….

And they drove much cooler cars too. Quite a few are still easy on the eyes, but then, their also in my age range.

And the music was way better than anything out there today!!

That’s the biggest thing I remember about being a Marine in the mid-70s Low Fucking Morale.

I’m surprised the Ukrainians didn’t claim they shot down the Luna-25 lander.

Close only counts in, horseshoes, hand grenades, and Russian moon shots.

Prison inmate food hacks? MRE’s would be healthier for the troops.

Those involved with the maintenance/repair on USS Boxer… starting with upper management needs a dose of decimation and keel-hauling.

Odie

Did they name this after Barbara Boxer, and did they not compare maintenance/repairs on this boats namesake?

rgr1480

According to Wiki:

“…She is the sixth U.S. ship to bear the name of the original HMS Boxer, which was captured from the British during the War of 1812. …”

Odie

Maybe we should have kept the original. Probably need less maintenance.

Skivvy Stacker

So….it IS named after her.

Steve1371

I wonder how much of this is due to the $20.00 a gallon earth friendly fuel it may have consumed in its lifetime.

MIRanger

David you are not alone. I think it is hilarious that Hilary is giving California exactly what they asked for (lots of rain), just not how they expected it (all at once)!! Not to mention the earthquakes!!

Smoking black…too much fuel. Ask any BT, and they’ll tell you.

Maybe they are blowing tubes or the shitty fuel oil they are using.

Hmmm. Looks like Peyronie’s disease.

Ah prison recipes, adding to the atmosphere and excitement of being assigned to the base. Lets you know what they think of and expect from the inma… soldiers.

Ft Hood has too many neglected soldiers concentrated too tightly; the same reason no one want to build high-rise housing projects or college dorms any more. It needs prison-like regimentation (one way to make sure Joes ain’t neglected) to prevent dysfunction.

Personally, I’d prefer better and more construction ways to keep folk non-neglected though…

Low bidders strike again. The sweetness of low price is gone long before the bitterness of poor quality sets in.

SFC D

It would appear that Ft Hood needs a very serious command shakeup. And by shakeup, I mean purge. There is no more serious leadership and command failure than not feeding your troops. A metric shit-ton of brass and and senior NCO’s should be outside the gate looking in, looking for civilian employment. Just unfuckingbelievable.

Ft Hood is a “behavioral sink” of (like a high-rise public housing project) too many hormonal/college/drinking age people in too little room– dysfunction and other trouble abound (proven psycholgical phenomenon):

I get it, I’m a college-dorm survivor. Also a survivor of the Camp Long barracks, where there was little else to do but drink and do dumb shit.

The Boxer LPH-4/CV-21 was with us when I was on the USS Okinawa LPH-3 off of Seville Spain during Operation Steel Pike in 1964 and was first in at The Dominican Republic fiasco Operation Power Pack in April of 1965. Rotsa Ruck to the new Boxer LHD-4. Don’t make em like they used to.

JustALurkinAround

Rosta Ruck made me raff.

JustALurkinAround

Meant Rotsa.

jeff LPH 3 63-66

Got that Rotsa Ruck from my Cousin Richard away back when I was a kid. He also was an Atomic Bomb observer on the USS Iwo Jima LPH 2. Also worked for Dr. Howard “H-Bomb” Teller while in High School during the summer.

Hurricane Hillary’s impact was mitigated by Trump colluding with Russia.

Skivvy Stacker

Oh, that’s no big deal. They just converted the USS Boxer to coal fired engines. Now they just have to stay away from icebergs.
