We Love Admin Fatwas

| July 28, 2023

Well, the Feds are at it again.

In 2022, Congress passed, and President Biden signed, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act…  The law incentivizes states to pass extreme risk protection laws, also called “red flag” laws, that allow members of the public and law enforcement to petition courts for a civil order to temporarily suspend a person’s access to firearms for fear that person might do violence. After gun rights advocates raised Second Amendment concerns, Congress included requirements that states applying for federal grants to implement red flag laws include certain due process protections.

Y’all remember that, right. Was good that we could at least build in some protections, even if the whole ‘red flag’ law skirted Constitutional due process issues rather closely.

But Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., and Rep. Alex Mooney, R-W.Va., say in a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland that the Justice Department has handed federal funds to states that did not meet the minimum due process criteria. The letter accuses the Biden administration of ignoring Congress and demands to know why grants to at least eight states and territories with no red flag laws on the books nevertheless received federal funds under the DOJ program.

“The Department of Justice appears to have weaponized the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act to illegally fund ineligible ‘red flag’ laws and bribe pro-gun states into passing gun confiscation laws,” the lawmakers wrote.

Fox News

This is why we don’t trust the government to do as they promise – maybe Al Gore’s “Inconvenient Truth” should have been about how no matter what they promise, they steamroller right past any protections. Kinda makes you wish there was some accountability, like if you violate the law you lose your job.

Now, I don’t know how many watch Friday politics – we tend to be concentrating on the Weekend Open Thread dropping. However, we also need to be paying attention – Friday late is when the government releases unpopular stuff, hoping that no one will notice. Last week was a fun one:

The Department of Energy (DOE) proposed energy efficiency regulations on water heaters late Friday, saying the new standards would go into effect in 2029 and save Americans billions of dollars while reducing carbon emissions.

Remember when A/C SEER standards were raised – and now a home A/C is more efficient and costs less money to run. Would that this would be the same…

“Their plan is to electrify everything they possibly can because they are under this distorted fantasy that renewables will be plentiful and cheap and reliable. They are none of the above,” said Mark Krebs, a mechanical engineer, energy policy consultant and former DOE adviser. “The physics defy what they want to do, the raw materials defy what they want to do, a free market economy defies what they want to do.”

Krebs added that the new water heater standards would lead to higher prices, higher installation fees and could even create serious corrosion risks in homes.

“The natural gas industry has consistently partnered with the government, customers and communities to help ensure the reliable delivery of energy Americans need, while also decreasing emissions and investing is cutting edge solutions to achieve our nation’s energy and environmental goals,” AGA President and CEO Karen Harbert said.

“DOE even emphasizes the cost impact this will have on customers in the NOPR, confirming there would be ‘additional installation costs’ where this action would drive customers to switch from natural gas to electric water heaters.”

Yeah, all-electric houses were the “wave of the future” in the ’70s. Electric power, however, has gotten far more expensive and unreliable since then. Oh, and:

AHAM spokesperson Jill Notini added the benefits of such DOE rulemaking would be marginal.

“This is yet another proposal that will hurt consumers,” she said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “When it comes to DOE’s claim that its proposed energy standards will save consumers money, the Emperor has no clothes.”

“Consumers will save only cents per month— no single proposal for Refrigerator-Freezers, Clothes Washers, Clothes Dryers, Cooking, Dishwashers will save consumers more than 65 cents per month,” Notini said.  Fox II

65 whole cents a month.

Nearly 75% of the population thinks age limits are a good idea.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/elected-officials-maximum-age-limits-opinion-poll-2022-09-08/

70 might be too low but 75 might not be. 90 is definitely too high.

“Hot Mic Catches Confused Feinstein Being Told To Vote ‘Aye’ In Awkward Committee Moment”

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/hot-mic-catches-feinstein-told-vote-aye-awkward-committee-moment

“Senator Diane Feinstein appeared confused Thursday during a routine Senate committee proceeding, where she began reading from her prepared remarks instead of saying “aye” during a roll call vote.”

“The moment involving Feinstein — the oldest serving member of the Senate at age 90 — came as the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee was taking roll ahead of a vote on the defense appropriations bill.”

“When it came Feinstein’s turn to say “aye,” as all members of the subcommittee do in order to have their votes recorded, the longtime California senator seemingly froze up.”

“Just say, ‘Aye,'” Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., told Feinstein.”

“Instead of registering her vote, Feinstein launched into remarks in favor of the bill, a process that was slated to come later in the meeting after the roll call is completed.”

“I would like to support a ‘yes’ vote on this,” Feinstein said. “It provides $823 billion — that’s an increase of $26 billion for the Department of Defense, and it funds priorities submitted—”
Feinstein was cut off by a staff member who appeared to tell the senator that the committee was still in the process of calling roll.”

“Just say, ‘Aye,'” Murray told Feinstein once more.”

“Okay, just…” Feinstein said as she appeared to remain confused about what was taking place at the time.”

IMO the likes of Feinstein and McConnell are both fine examples of how right he still is today!

Just heard this morning on AM radio that the average age of a retiree in the US is 67… and the average age of a member of Congress is 68.

It’s past time to put age limits on serving.

fm2176

The max age for US Service Members below O6 and below is 62. If a crotchety old CSM or COL can’t continue serving (and let’s face it, most of those older guys have 30+ years of muscle memory and have lived healthy lifestyles compared to most politicians), then yeah, I say we cap Congressmembers’ age. Set term limits (let’s just say 12 years tops, let Representatives serve up to six terms and Senators up to two), and how about we just come up with a happy round number like 70 being the limit? Anyone running for office will have to complete their term before their 71st birthday. No more McConnell or Feinstein moments, less likelihood of someone pulling a McCain and dying in office.

Don’t forget Holiday weekends are extra special like when they dropped the report on the Afghanistan withdraw late Friday on 4th of July weekend earlier this month. I was kind of surprised it wasn’t covered here at all, given what was in it. Of course 70% of it remains classified.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/jun/30/us-afghanistan-war-military-pullout-report-biden-trump

The official, briefing reporters on condition of anonymity, declined to say why the review dated March 2022 was withheld from release until the eve of the 4 July holiday weekend [2023].

“If the President is so proud of his withdrawal and ‘airlift’ then why do they keep burying reports before major holiday weekends?” Loudermilk added.

A simple electric water heater is already 100% efficient.
It is a resistive element submerged in a tank of water.
No moving parts. ALL of the energy expended goes into hot water. Keeping it hot is a function of the tank and insulation but
the actual production of that hot water is 100% efficient.
You cannot improve on 100% efficiency unless you violate the
laws of Physics and Mathamatics. The day that happens I will
rip up both of my electrical engineering degrees live on tv.

I would ask for a refund from the school or schools that awarded you your degrees also.

Oh for fu#*s sake…

This is a slap in the face, exacerbated by my failing appliances. Almost a year to the day ago I moved back to my home and found my AC had gone out a week prior (fortunately, my neighbor took care of it before I arrived, knowing I was good for paying him back). Weeks later, the water heater went out, so into the attic I went to toil in the heat replacing the elements, braving electrocution and drowning (okay, the breaker and water supply were off, but still). Next, it was the dishwasher, which finally got replaced a month or two ago. Then, one of the oven elements went out. Double wall oven hardwired in, so I had to ensure there was no power to the circuit. Now, it’s the washer and potentially the refrigerator. I may need to take an escrow loan out to renovate and update the house…

Yes, my house is all electric, built in 1980 and still mostly looking the part. I’ll gladly pay ten times $0.65, a whole $6.50, if I can reliably do dishes, laundry, cook, have hot water, and keep the drinks cold.

As for “red flag” laws, my state doesn’t have them, and we sure as hell don’t need them. In my opinion, they’re a way for the government to deprive us of our constitutional rights, and an excuse for trigger happy LEOs to eliminate would-be peaceful citizens, should one of us dare to question their authority in seizing our legally owned firearms.

Blaster

Well, I guess “guzzz are bad!”, so no surprise. Bows too, knives next and the rocks.

Also, gas water heaters, stoves and window AC units.

I hope that all of you deplorables do realize that government is, after all, just trying to take care of us!!!

When you crank in inflation, these new rules’ savings won’t nearly equal the increased costs and lower efficiency of these new compliant appliances.
