Bill proposed to ban AI from running nuclear missile systems without human leadership
Three Democrats and a Republican decided to get ahead of the possibility that Artificial Intelligence can develop to the point that it could run nuclear missile systems without human intervention. The Department of Defense already has a policy in place that prevents the scenario. These congressmen want to make it a law. They want to make sure that we don’t get to the point where AI launches nuclear weapons based on its own analysis without human input.
From Fox News:
The bipartisan lawmakers’ measure would preemptively stymie any future Defense Department policy decisions that could lead to AI being capable of firing off nuclear weapons on its own.
“While U.S. military use of AI can be appropriate for enhancing national security purposes, use of AI for deploying nuclear weapons without a human chain of command and control is reckless, dangerous, and should be prohibited,” Rep. Ken Buck, R-Colo., said this week.
“It is our job as Members of Congress to have responsible foresight when it comes to protecting future generations from potentially devastating consequences,” said Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., who’s been vocal on the dangers of allowing AI to keep rapidly developing unchecked.
Their bill would codify existing Pentagon policy that requires a human be “in the loop” for any decisions regarding the use of nuclear weapons.
AI is increasingly becoming a hot topic in Washington as its growing prevalence in society forces lawmakers and officials to reckon with both its positives and its dangers.
Buck indicated that Capitol Hill had some catching up to do in an interview on “America’s Newsroom” on Friday morning. “AI is here and unfortunately, Congress hasn’t been really looking at the issue for a long time,” he said.
“We want to make sure that there is a human in this process of launching a nuclear weapon, if at any point in time we need to launch a nuclear weapon,” Buck said. “So you see sci-fi movies, and the world is out of control because AI is taken over — we’re gonna have humans in this process.”

Hey, somebody saw Terminator.
I really don’t fear the Skynet scenario. I do worry about putting more and more automation in the system. More chance for stuff to mess up. Especially new technology like that. Makes me think of the computer glitch that could have lead to a nuclear holocaust if it were not for the sensibility of a single Soviet officer.

Meanwhile, lobbyists from Cyberdyne Systems are in opposition of this measure and calling on Democrat lawmakers to intervene.
“Shall we play a game?”
Waiting for this one.
*grin*
me too
Maybe we should stop creating things that can kill us all. Prominent AI engineers have publicly stated that they don’t fully understand their own creations, they state that these things are possibly becoming sentient. Pull the freaking plug before we have a disaster that makes COVID look like the good old days. I know you really can’t put it back in the box and other countries also have programs but haven’t we learned enough about trusting the experts?
This guy says to stop AI development and authorities must be willing to have airstrikes on a rogue AI’s server farm if necessary: https://time.com/6266923/ai-eliezer-yudkowsky-open-letter-not-enough/
Very scary article. I certainly hope it doesn’t come true. Think about the irony of mankind’s destruction because we made something that has no need for us to be around. Can we maybe stop fucking around with things we don’t understand?
We want AI to be like this… but it ain’t:
Or
I know I did back then.
Another guy– ex-OpenAI researcher– said 10- 20% chance of AI takeover with many/most people dead (i.e., “Judgement Day” in the Terminator movies):

Probably a good thing that these advances in the west are largely done by private industry rather than federal apparatchiks. While I don’t trust either very far, I trust private developers to be more responsible than bureaucrats with their creations.
A moratorium just cedes the race to the CCP.
Ultimately, I’m willing to bet it will be just another disruptive technology like agriculture, gunpowder, the automobile, and the internet – how it’s applied is the difference between whether it’s helpful or harmful.
All these Chicken Little technologists predicting TEOTWAWKI due to AI sound an awful lot like climate alarmists who got tired of being wrong every 12 years and jumped ship to the next “sky is falling” panic.
A voice keeps screaming in my head “havent you guys seen the movie about this”………Good lord lets just blow ourselves up already
That God we have an intelligent human in the command loop. Wait, it’s Joe Biden?
The movie WarGames comes to mind here!

Why is it always the “scary” terminator pic?
Since we’re discussing advanced intelligence, yesterday was the 15th anniversary of this.
I hope others appreciate its genius as much as I do.
All you dickheads that think you know math, watch and learn.

> Bill proposed to ban AI from running nuclear missile systems without human leadership
That presupposes there is any leadership at all at the Five-Sided Circus or the Wretched Hive of Scum and Villainy at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
