North Korea: about 800,000 signed up to fight America

| March 20, 2023

A newspaper in North Korea claims that about 800,000 citizens either reenlisted or volunteered to join the military. The motivation cited for volunteering and for reenlisting? Fighting the United States. Further down the article, the claim switches to 800,000 students and workers volunteering to fight America.

From the New York Post:

North Korea claims that about 800,000 of its citizens volunteered to join or reenlist in the nation’s military to fight against the United States, North Korea’s state newspaper reported on Saturday.

About 800,000 students and workers, on Friday alone, across the country expressed a desire to enlist or reenlist in the military to counter the US, the Rodong Sinmun newspaper reported.

“The soaring enthusiasm of young people to join the army is a demonstration of the unshakeable will of the younger generation to mercilessly wipe out the war maniacs making last-ditch efforts to eliminate our precious socialist country, and achieve the great cause of national reunification without fail and a clear manifestation of their ardent patriotism,” the North’s Rodong Sinmun said.

The New York Post provides the rest of the story.

It would take very little food for a new NORK recruit to be fed better than the average NORK citizen. It makes sense to enlist if you are starving to death.

26Limabeans

At least a citizen can choose the cut of rat.
A soldier might just be chewing on yesterdays deserter.

RGR 4-78

What is the difference between a NORK deserter and a NORK political prisoner?

Not a thing.

They both taste the same.

5JC

What I don’t quite get is why China isn’t feeding them better. They could feed the whole country for a few billion dollars. I guess it is because they are already in their pocket.

USMC Steve

I have read several reliable reports that say the chinese are scared of them. They started cracking down on border crossings and have reinforced their border forces on that border. Probably think they are nuts like everybody else does.

MustangCPT

Like Dr. Frankenstein, they’ve realized too late that they can no longer control the monster they’ve created.

‘War maniacs”, I like the sound of that.

Gotta be a 80’s punk rock band with that name.

Close.

Eggs

Has anyone informed the 800,000 that they have volunteered?

NHSparky

Only when they get a pointy stick and are shoved in the direction of the DMZ.

Sam

Well, things go on.

I went back and read this morning’s new from Small Wars Journal. They were talking about this:

Is North Korea now ready to fire nukes?

Roh-Dog

“800,000 volunteers to fight against America”?

Naw man, it’s 3,810 Infantry basic combat loads worth of targets.

Shut up Norks, or we drop San Quintin’s gangs behind the DM.

USMC Steve

There is a thought. Drop a bunch of real badass gang convicts near Pyongyang, tell them to fight their way to the 38th parallel, and those that make it are free. Leaves me no one to root for.

MustangCPT

Have some drones overhead to stream the footage, pop some popcorn, put a twelver of Yuengling on ice, and watch the festivities. 🍿🍺

USMC Steve

We are starting to get Yuengling in the midwest now. Almost like being civilized and stuff.

MustangCPT

Shit, we’ve had it in Indiana since March of 2017. It was in Ohio a year or two before that. What part of the Midwest are you in that you’re just now getting it? Illinois still doesn’t have it last time I checked and I was in Michigan last summer and it wasn’t there either.

USMC Steve

Missouri.

MustangCPT

Hmm. Yours may be part of the contract brewing arrangement between Yuengling and Molson Coors. I believe that everything west of the Mississippi is brewed at the Molson Coors Dallas brewery.

5JC

Nah, just drop a bunch of meth heads back there and tell them the reason that the Norks are so skinny is because there is the world’s largest meth lab in Kim Jong-Un’s basement.

MustangCPT

Even better…🤣

USMC Steve

I suspect they will fare no better than they did from 1950-1953. The Nork army was pretty much eradicated once we got both Marines and our shit together over there.

“The Iraq War 20 Years Later: Delta Force Operators Recall Hunting Saddam Hussein”

https://www.foxnews.com/world/iraq-war-20-years-later-delta-force-operators-recall-hunting-saddam-hussein

“Baghdad, Iraq, March 20, 2003 – At 5:34 a.m., the United States, joined by British, Australian, and Polish forces, launched the “shock and awe” invasion of Iraq, opening one of the deadliest military engagements of the 21st century. The war would define then-President George W. Bush’s legacy and change the Middle East’s geopolitical landscape.”

“As Bush addressed the American people from the Oval Office, hellfire missiles reigned down on key governmental offices in the capital of Baghdad and forced citizens to seek shelter. The brutality and violence of the war were captured by 24-hour news channels broadcast to millions of people worldwide.”

“The invasion came off the heels of the “Axis of Evil” State of the Union address from Bush five months after the September 11 attacks. During his speech, the former president called for action against foreign governments he accused of sponsoring Jihadi terrorism and stockpiling weapons of mass destruction. The term was well received, and while there was some opposition to the war in the early stages, the American public overwhelmingly supported an overthrow of Saddam Hussein’s regime.”

“A USA Today/Gallup poll conducted four days after the war began found that 72% of Americans supported the invasion while only 25% disapproved. At the time, nine out of 10 Americans believed that U.S. forces would find conclusive evidence that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, with 41% thinking it would be necessary to find the weapons to justify the war.”

“In 2011, U.S. troops officially withdrew from Iraq but returned in 2014 to defend the Iraqi government after the start of the second sectarian civil war involving ISIS.”

SFC D

We’d been in Baghdad about a week, I was talking to my BN CDR. SSG D said “How do we know when we’re done here?” He just laughed.

I was working with a Lt. Colonel of Royal Engineers who mentioned that his great-grandfather had served in Afghanistan. I didn’t press for details but it probably would have been around the time of the Khyber Pass.

” the 20th Annversary of the beginning of OIF has not been mentioned or posted”

Too many wars to keep track of these days.

JC5

Did we ever get a reason for all that? I really feel like I’m owed some kind of explanation as to why all the blood and treasure had to go over there. Why did we rack up trillions in debt?

ninja

Great Question…

When we were doing the initial planning in 2002, I made the comment “Sure hope we are not doing this because GWB wants to please his Daddy.”

Also made the comment about Cheney and KBR…

KoB

Soooo, ninja…You were on the DA Form 6 to be “that guy (girl)” even then? DaHell you doing stating facts during an initial planning brief? Would going ahead and buying up some stock in KBR then be considered “insider trading”? Bet your OER had a comment to the effect…”Service Member has a trait of speaking her mind at most inopportune moments…”

“Why Are More Americans Moving South?”

“According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the South added more than 1.3 million residents in 2022.”

https://scrippsnews.com/stories/why-are-more-americans-moving-south/

“The six states that grew the most through domestic migration were all in the South, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.”

“Florida added 318,000 residents via domestic migration, 230,000 people left another state for Texas and North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia each grew by more than 80,000 people.”

“Meanwhile, California, New York and Illinois experienced the biggest population declines.”

Due to Covid deaths my state would have had heavy negative population growth since 2020 (the first year we had negative natural population growth in state history). However mass immigration in the form of legal and illegal has reversed that trend. Unfortunately they are all coming here. Like literally here. My county is the fastest growing in the state and my city the 2nd fastest growing in the state. The real numbers are much higher as it is impossible to count the SA/CA migrants.

There are currently more than 3000 housing units under construction in the city, or already built this year in a city of 30K. I drive around the city a lot and I’ve never actually seen anyone other than Hispanics working on the housing other than plumbers, electricians and other specialists.

For one thing, all the muzzie terrorists that might have come to make trouble in the US were busy getting snuffed over in that third world shithole. I am good with that.

Went for a drive to re-up the Class VI supplies, liquid-type, and remembered, I have the PERFECT meme for this.

Welcome Home to my Vietnam Brothers and Sisters.

To the OIF/OEF generation, may we never tire, always keen to honor the memories of those that came before, and carry those lessons-learned forward, until mankind has fought its last battle.

It wasn’t for nothing, but August 2021 was painful as the oldest of 3 brothers who all served during that timeframe. 2 of us deployed twice for the “show” and my youngest brother got sent to South Korea instead of the Middle East. I also have a cousin on my mother’s side who is a Marine officer who deployed to Afghanistan. I have a cousin once removed on my father’s side who recently completed Basic Recon Course. His father, my cousin, was a Marine Recon officer who served in Gulf War I and later was involved in counter-drug ops in South America. This saga has involved 30 years of my family history and two generations. I went from a young man to an old man in that time and it was the defining moment for my generation. So, no, it wasn’t for nothing but I want civilian leadership worthy of the effort we put forth and senior military leadership who will look out for my Joes as much as I do. I’ve got more time behind me in the military than I do ahead of me but I always wanted to leave it better than I found it and I want to make sure that I leave my little piece of it in capable hands. And, if I get called up “one mo’ time”, I want to be part of a force that is allowed to finish the job.

Roh-Dog

I want civilian leadership worthy of the effort we put forth and senior military leadership who will look out for my Joes as much as I do

A thousand thousand amens to that! Anyone willing to live that creed is truly my Brother and I’ll be happy to ride “one mo’ time” with ‘im.

(I hope that meme wasn’t offensive to anyone’s sensibilities, that intent was not there at all. Just wanted to highlight the historical soft ambiguity our conflicts seem to have and their embarrassing ends)

5JC

I kind of mucked about so obviously not offended. It seems whenever we go to war with a job to do and we do it and leave, things go well. When we don’t have clear goals or we allow mission creep to set in we don”t, funny that.

Fyrfighter

Seems like a bit of mission creep, at last as far as suggested by Patton could have paid significant dividends over the last 70ish years..

If we’d kicked Saddam’s ass in ’91 it would’ve headed-off a whole bunch of sh*t.

Was overseas with Americans (albeit elsewhere) on both 30 APR 75 and 31 AUG 21– the dismay and disappointment were the same. We can and must do better in war and with our allies.

Are there even 800,000 people in Norkistan?

I don’t think there are really focused on climate change as their top priority.

Nor is their military focused on climate change, SHARP and diversity training!

UPDATE. 1.4 Million instead of 800,000.

“In another dispatch, KCNA said more than 1.4 million North Koreans have volunteered to join or re-enlist in the military to fight against South Korean and US troops – up from some 800,000 enlistees reported over the weekend.”

“…a target rich environment…”

Too bad that Dugout Doug was forced to “…just fade away.” IIRC he had an idea the would have prevented all of this. So did Patton.

As it may be, I’m watching at a segment of Korean War Dog Fighting pitting Migs against Sabres. Narration from BG (Ret) Robinson Risner. Part of the discussion is the Soviet Aces from WWII that were flying the NK Migs. Ivan was flying NVAF Migs in VN. I suspect that we’ll see that again.

Good thing that the Bad Orange Man was not (s)elected for another term a prezzy. We’d already be in the midst of WWIII.

I’ve read the book by former North Korean Yeonmi Park who escaped North Korea at age 13 with her mother thru China to Mongolia and South Korea. Now she is a Youtuber in New York with a million followers and another book just released.

The family lived across the river from China and was fascinated by all the lights and, when the wind was right, the smell of cooking food across the river.
