Patroitism is Not a Pejorative

| March 1, 2023

I just finished Nikki Haley’s new book, “With All Due Respect”.  I figured if a know liar and race pimp like Don Lemon found a need to take a shot at her, it must be worth looking into.

She was Governor of my state for some time and was very popular here.  I read the usual racist slander being spewed at her as a conservative and I could not help but take notice.  When people like Wajahat Ali say things like:

“I see her and I feel sad because she uses her brown skin as a weapon against poor black folks and poor brown folks, and she uses her brown skin to launder white supremacist talking points?,”

and

“She’s the alpha-Karen with brown skin.”

It only reinforces my own confirmation bias that voting Republican is probably the way to go again.  Mrs Haley is of Indian ethnicity and seems to be guilty of “wrong think” for not supporting the narrative that America is a racist hatemongering cesspool.

In her book, she talks often about the Charleston Church Shooting that happened in 2015 while she was Governor.  Dylann Roof was found guilty of murder and is awaiting Federal Execution while currently serving 9 Life Sentences.

Roof espoused racial hatred in both a website manifesto which he published before the shooting, and a journal which he wrote from jail afterward. On his website, Roof posted photos of emblems which are associated with white supremacy, including a photo of the Confederate battle flag. The shooting triggered debates about modern display of the flag and other commemorations of the Confederacy. Following these murders, the South Carolina General Assembly voted to remove the flag from State Capitol grounds.

From Dylann Roof Manifesto:

I hate the sight of the American flag. Modern American patriotism is an absolute joke. People pretending like they have something to be proud while White people are being murdered daily in the streets. Many veterans believe we owe them something for “protecting our way of life” or “protecting our freedom”. But im not sure what way of life they are talking about. How about we protect the White race and stop fighting for the jews. I will say this though, I myself would have rather lived in 1940’s American than Nazi Germany, and no this is not ignorance speaking, it is just my opinion. So I dont blame the veterans of any wars up until after Vietnam, because at least they had an American to be proud of and fight for.

I do not believe people owe me a thing for my service.  That bill had already been paid in full by those who served before me.  Govenor Haley was deeply disturbed by Roof’s killing spree.  Insofar as I can tell, the Dylann Roof Manifesto is an affront to everything Nikki Haley stands for.

Those who are incapable of de-biasing themselves will never understand that the Confederate Battle Flag is not seen as racist by many people including many of color.

“For many people in our state, the flag stands for traditions that are noble. Traditions of history, of heritage, and of ancestry” and that the shooter had a “sick and twisted view of the flag. In no way does he reflect the people in our state who respect and, in many ways, revere it.”

However, she also recognized the flag could cause pain, and others may view “the flag as a deeply offensive symbol of a brutally oppressive past.”

She also presided over its removal from State Grounds.

In the not so distant political times there had been a growing divide between what Patriotism and Nationalism stood for.  Nationalism now seems to mean “White Nationalism” and synonymous with White Supremacy.   Patriotism is being conflated to have the same inference.

This Blog is not an Echo Chamber to re-enforce confirmation bias of any kind.  It is a living attestation that proves Veterans are not a monolith of belief.  The concept that most of us served to protect the right of others to disagree with us escapes too many Americans.  Those quomodocunquizing clusterfists and rapacious varlets of racism like Lemon and Ali will continue to profit from those who pander to their particular form of hate.

I may have my own concerns about her becoming President but,  being a Racist is not among them.  Her book is a good read and mostly about her time in the Trump Administration.

Patroitism is not a pejorative.

FIRST (ht2…oh wait…) of all, Dylan Roof should have been taken out and immediately hung for his murderous acts. On the public square with full press coverage. And if America is such a racist hate filled country why are so many people trying to get here? If you hate us either don’t come or if already here…LEAVE.

No one owes me for my service either. The real Heroes rest beneath those White Stones/Crosses in Cemeteries around the World.

The destruction of History is straight out of the despot’s playbook for gaining control over We, The People.

The politicians of the time started that War and they are hell bent on pitting We, The People against one another to mask what they are doing to control We, The People.

YMMV

Not just people trying to get here but the overwhelming majority are POC.

“And if America is such a racist hate filled country why are so many people trying to get here? If you hate us either don’t come or if already here…LEAVE.”

Yep.

Same with The South.

Lots of Northerners are moving to the South….

Wonder Why…🤭😉😎

I don’t like the Confederate Battle Flag, or any other anti-US symbol. IMO, There is no reasonable argument that makes it suddenly not anti-American.

I believe I am owed millions for my service and will collect it one month at a time. In fact I got a check yesterday. But that was the deal they cut with me for 24 years of service. I still have to keep up some on my end like not giving up my citizenship or serving in a foreign military. I’m cool with that.

Normally I would say Don Lemon can suck my frosty white balls but it would be a treat for him so I hope he learns something in his rehabilitation classes about how not to be a misogynistic race baiter ahole but I think aliens invading is more likely.

Nikki Haley would make an awesome president. And Whoppi, she ain’t your age you crazy old bitty, you are more than old enough to be her mom.

Oh and Dylan Roof will almost certainly be on the express elevator to hell. Hopefully all of his victims will spend eternity kicking him in the junk non stop.

MIRanger

Since all of his victims were God fearing Christians I would doubt that any of them would ever even have thoughts of him, let alone interact enough to kick him in the junk….I’m sure his Demons or Devils will do that for them…while they exist peacefully in Heaven.

Please explain how the Confederate Battle Flag is “anti-US”…😉😎

Not Sarc. We really are interested in your thoughts behind your statement.

Thank You!

“Photos: They’re Black And They’re Proud Of The Confederate Flag”

https://www.ajc.com/news/state–regional-govt–politics/photos-they-black-and-they-proud-the-confederate-flag/by06A6ywMrqi7mYP9A1jmO/

“Sometimes black support of the Confederate flag is a family affair. That was certainly the case on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2015, when Freya Powell of southwest Atlanta (red shirt) drove to Stone Mountain Park with her nephews — Jacody Terry, 4, and Larrese Clayton, 8 — and her goddaughter, Karen Edwards, to support the battle flag during a rally that drew hundreds to the world’s largest Confederate monument….I’ve been coming to Stone Mountain for 40 years and never encountered one problem,” she said, holding a Confederate flag bumper sticker. “We don’t believe the flag represents racism. Stone Mountain is history. The person who wants to blast the carvings off the mountain is someone who wants to eradicate history.”

“University of South Carolina Beaufort senior Byron Thomas, seen here in 2011, is another black man who is a battle flag supporter. To him, it represents freedom of speech, Southern heritage, regional pride and ancestral honor — one of his forebears, Benjamin Thomas, was a black Confederate cook.”

Pretty simple it was the battle flag of the states that left and then attacked the US, seizing Federal Property unjustly, thus starting a war that was quite costly, the most costly one we ever fought. Attacking the US directly with military force is about as anti-US as there is.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like creamed corn either. But if that is your thing feel free to go for it.

And yes, not only are we OEF Vets, we are also OIF Vets. We were boots on the ground in 2002/2003.

We are now staunch supporters of Tunnels To Towers and Wounded Warriors. So many lives lost or destroyed. We had no business in Iraq….We still believe either Cheney was behind the scenes to build up his empire…or George did it to make his Daddy happy.

My Southern Relatives, who were too poor to own slaves, were proud US Citizens, who ALSO fought in the American Revolutionary War…and Generations after that, served our Country in WW1, WW2, The Korean Conflict, The Vietnam Conflict, OEF and OIF. They definitely were/are not “Anti-US”…Just proud of their Heritage.

As we are.

Thank You For The Feedback. We prefer fresh Corn On The Cob, but LOVE Southern Creamed Corn…😉😎

Your good judgement is in doubt.

I share your opinion of creamed corn. Hunger is a viable option.

The flag was carried into battle by a rebel army fighting against the United States of America in order to protect the states right to maintain slavery. Name one other country in the history of the world that has allowed battle monuments and the displaying of the flag of the traitors who rose up in rebellion against them? It all changed in the late 1800s and early 1900s because of politics. Democrats needed votes and the country needed troops and places to train and Army. Compromises where made in efforts to unite the country. There was still a lot of open wounds between the north and south 30-40 years later. Hence you get laws like the one that made all confederate veterans considered US veterans. The children and wives of the confederate troops erected those monuments and carried forward the tradition of the displaying the battle flag as a salute to the troops that sacrificed their young lives. The south is proud of their troops that fought. I can understand that.

“A Brief History of the Confederate Flags”

http://www.mshistorynow.mdah.ms.gov/issue/history-of-the-confederate-flags

“Although the Beauregard battle flag was perhaps the emblem most widely used by southern troops, it was never made the official battle flag of the Confederate Army and there were many other battle flags of varying styles, shapes, and colors used by Rebel forces during the Civil War.”

“In the collective memory of White southerners, the failure of their forebears to win the independence of the Confederate States of America is known as the Lost Cause, and the Beauregard battle flag is the most enduring symbol of that cause. In the receding memories of the Confederate veterans, who adopted it as their official insignia, the battle flag was the soldier’s banner, not the colors of the Confederacy.”

“Confederate Battle Flag”

https://www.si.edu/object/confederate-battle-flag%3Anmah_439645

“The Confederate battle flag was born of necessity after the Battle of Bull Run. Amid the smoke and general chaos of battle, it was hard to distinguish the Confederate national flag, the “Stars and Bars,” from the U. S. national flag, the “Stars and Stripes.” Confederate Congressman William Porcher Miles suggested that the army have a distinct battle flag. General Pierre T. Beauregard
chose a variation on the cross of St. Andrew. The battle flag features a blue cross, edged with a white band on a red field. There are three stars on each arm of the cross and one star in the center. The stars represented each of the states of the Confederacy, plus one. Beauregard
betting that one of the states with pro-Confederacy leanings, Maryland, Kentucky, or Missouri, would join the Southern cause. That never happened, but the flag remained the same for the remainder of the war.”

Teddy Roosevelt said the fact those states did not secede was what saved the union. Maryland could not, since Lincoln declared martial law and locked up the state assembly for the duration.

5JC

If Maryland had left there would have been chaos as the capitol was surrounded. The North might have lost the war as well. Confederate sympathizers attacked troops sent to defend DC when they marched through Baltimore. Funny how wars often come down a few decisions.

SFC (R) Blizz

However we must remember that to those enslaved in the south, it means something different. I’m not a left wingnut or anything, I’m just a realist. The south did what it did and paid the price. I’m not for cancelling and I agree with monuments erected to honor that southern solider who sacrificed their lives for something they may or may not have agreed with or participated in. But monuments to southern traitor generals and leaders is a stretch if you look at it that way. Having monuments of guys that fought to keep your ancestors in chains isn’t acceptable to some.

Marine0331

I think a lot of folks lose sight of the fact that a majority of the Confederate soldiers and officers alike did not own slaves and thus were not fighting to necessarily support slavery. They were fighting for their slice of life and the fear that the US government was going to take that away. Akin to what we are seeing again with these left-wing nutjobs in power today. Without tv, cell phones, in some cases limited to no reading skills and limited to no media, most of these people were just fighting for their homestead. All they knew is what they were told, so they defended what they thought would be taken away from them – their family, homes and hardworking way of life. We all know that slavery is a horrible sin, but that battle flag is not a symbol of hatred to all people. Just like the people who hate our beautiful American flag and who hate our glorious country, who by the way accepts all people into her arms, we are all entitled to our own thoughts, values and ideals.

Marine0331

I forgot to mention that most, if not all foot soldiers, artilleryman or cavalryman, signed up to support their individual state or town. How many of these men knew nothing about slavery, but only that their homestead could be attacked? How many of them were already in a local militia? Many people today fly the confederate flag to honor their family members who supported those ideals and not slavery. For many of them, hate never enters the equation.

“Please explain how the Confederate Battle Flag is “anti-US” ”

I would think that is self evident. Why else would the Confederate states want to divorce themselves from the US? How would it not be anti US?

timactual

Of course that does not mean that anyone currently displaying the flag is anti US. Rather it indicates, to me at least, a certain pride in the courage and sacrifice of those who suffered and died for what they believed.

Splitting hairs? Perhaps. I am a believer in nuance. I will not display a Confederate flag, but I do not condemn those who do. Unless they are redneck racist assholes, of course, who give all flags, including the Stars and Stripes, a bad name.

ninja

We really appreciate the feedback from everyone on the subject of the Confederate Battle Flag.

Thank You for the maturity, providing your insight on your beliefs and not doing any name calling.

We All Are Americans. We All Love Our Country. We All Came From Different Backgrounds.

We Are Still Brothers and Sisters In Arms.

Salute!

Marine0331

But therein lies the problem. If you display the flag for any reason, you are condemned as a redneck racist asshole.

rgr769

The Confederate battle flag is not an anti US symbol. In the context of history, the states were considered their country. That was the mindset. People considered themselves citizens of their respective states.

MIRanger

I may have to pick up her book. I really respected her while she was Governor. I was dissappointed she did not stay longer as Ambassador to the United Nations it was a necessary evil to understand what a President (or any Diplomat) must deal with, but one can only take so much of that club. I would definately vote for her over President Trump. I think she brings more dignity to the office.

Roh-Dog

“…republican…”

I’m not even sure she’s familiar with the limited scope of government as set forth in the Constitution.

Nikki did function as a formal ambassador to, and agent of, a foreign government. She also acts as an informal ambassador to WEF, so those are disqualifying.

But hey, she’s a fine example of a post-guilt society, took down a banner for a formerly-divorced (reunited by unrighteous force) nation and believes in the sovereignty of Corporation Amerika.

In short, Romney’s central party committee niece will pull not-a-cent in support, the ‘media’ will provide false criticisms, she’ll wow the dried up monsters on The View, and will be ordained the GOwnedP contravention.
