Russian soldier describes the Ukraine War as “destruction of the Russian people”
The New York Times interviewed some soldiers of Russia’s 155th Naval Infantry Brigade and received insights on Russian military preparedness in Ukraine. For example, troops did not have sufficient critical medical supplies, sufficient walkie-talkies, sufficient maps, sufficient food, etc. They were also issued Kalashnikov rifles made around the 1970s. Some soldiers were reported as using Wikipedia for instructions on weapon use.
From the Business Insider:
In a New York Times investigation detailing Russia’s failures throughout the conflict, the story of Russia’s 155th Naval Infantry Brigade is one of the clearest examples of the poor decision-making that has defined the invasion.
While in combat, the troops in the naval brigade lacked sufficient food, maps, critical medical supplies, or walkie-talkies, and they were forced to use 1970s-era Kalashnikov rifles — with some members having to resort to using Wikipedia to locate instructions for using certain weapons — according to the report.
In interviews with The Times, several members of the brigade told the newspaper that some of the newly-enlisted military fighters had little experience with guns and spoke of having few bullets to use in combat.
The members were initially told by their commanders that they wouldn’t see combat, per the report. But once they witnessed their comrades being killed around them as Ukrainian forces were firing upon them, they realized that they weren’t told the truth about their role in the conflict.
A Russian solider named Mikhail — who in October witnessed many of his comrades dying near the Ukrainian town of Pavlivka — told The Times that of the 60 members of his platoon, 40 were killed and just eight members eluded serious injuries.
“This isn’t war,” Mikhail told the newspaper from a hospital near Moscow. “It’s the destruction of the Russian people by their own commanders.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin displayed a high degree of confidence in the country’s military when he launched the invasion of Ukraine in late February.
But nearly ten months later, Russia has been unable to defeat the Ukrainian military and has found itself shunned and isolated from the West.
According to The Times, Putin “spiraled into self-aggrandizement and anti-Western zeal,” which drove him to make the decision to invade Ukraine “in near total isolation.”
Per The Times report, Russia’s invasion plans showed that the military expected troops to march across Ukraine and swiftly take control of the country, with officers being instructed to bring along their dress uniforms and medals for military parades in Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital.
The Russian military, which was seen as a formidable force before the conflict, in actuality had been “severely compromised” by longstanding corruption, per the report.
Russian troops on the ground in Ukraine relied on old maps — some from the 1960s — to navigate their way across the country, and many used their cellphones to call numbers in Russia, which allowed Ukrainian forces to locate and attack them. The Times report also detailed how some Russian pilots flew their planes as though they weren’t in peril.
The Business Insider has additional details.
Pootin’ musta believed his Commander’s Readiness Reports. Pencil whipping has always been an issue…in many organizations, not just unique to Military Formations. And maybe Pootin thought that just because he had the quality of quantity, ie many more young lives to throw away as cannon fodder, he could just waltz his way in to liberate the Ukrainian People from their “oppression” and make them free to be Russians. Hell, who knows.
One fact that history has always taught us is people will fight to defend their Homeland from an invader harder than the invader will fight to conquer the invadees, especially if the invader doesn’t want to be an invader.
I don’t have a dog in this fight, but I do have an ass load of American Taxpayer money in it. My sympathies are only with the people, on BOTH sides, that are caught up in the middle of all of this stupidity. The offer of refuge for ‘krainian Hotties still stands.
Ukrainians will never be granted refugee status in America because they don’t have the right quantity of melanin the Democrat Party wants in new immigrants, to keep them as Democrat voters in their political plantation.
Sympathy for the devil?
Ukraine is not targeting russian civilians or civilian infrastructure, Russian civilians are not suffering… Claims are that western sanctions are having no effect so Russian consumers are not suffering.. Russians are supportive of Putins war against Ukraine . No sympathy needed here
Meanwhile in Ukraine.. looting, rape, murder, mass graves being exhumed.. all war crimes being commited by the Russian soldier.. no sympathy for the Russian soldiers justified
No, ZERO (0) sympathy for the Devil, in this case Pootin and his Commanders that said, “Sure Vlad, we can do this.” Did you read the posted article? These Russian “soldiers” were basically swept off the street and sent off to a meat grinder with little or no training, obsolete equipment, and no supplies.
This isn’t war,” Mikhail told the newspaper from a hospital near Moscow. “It’s the destruction of the Russian people by their own commanders.”
I’m certain that the Russian Mother suffers as much pain as the Ukrainian Mother when she loses a child to this ill conceived power play. And that Russian Dude that is dying a lingering death, bleeding out with no medical supplies except his sister’s feminine hygiene products, is sure wishing he was still in The Motherland.
My .02? This is a carefully planned distraction to take the minds of the American People off of the failures of our (s)elected officials. Next up, Taiwan or Korea.
Regardless how the Russian soldier ended up in Ukraine or the circumstances he finds himself in.. there is no justification for war crimes
enough people take to the streets, the war will end..yes some, maybe many will die… how many ways are there to say freedom is not free
my $0.02
I agree with you. It needs to end now
She’s having too much fun kickin’ Russky ass and doing the Pikachu dance:
Is she hott or nott?
If this’s her… thinkin’ the former:
That there is one hotsie totsie Ukrainian schatzie (sp).
Sucks to be Russia.
The Russian military, like much of Russian society, is corrupt. It’s the way of the ‘Old World’. From the Tsars to the Bolsheviks, to today. Their only real triumph was WW2, and that was where they knew they had more soldiers than the Germans had bullets. I played some of the Avalon Hill strategy games from the Eastern Front, and there was big difference in the Order of Battle starting in ’43.
Indeed a war of attrition always favors the big numbers…had the Germans not been led by a lunatic who thought strategic bombing was a waste of time the one thing that would have whittled those numbers down wasn’t available to the Germans…nice mention of the old Avalon Hill games, still have a couple dozen of those options in my basement…
Russkies still want to party like it’s 1943 (Kursk)… unfortunately for them:

Nice to see that the Soviet system is still alive and kicking.
Putin tells the armed forces to become the best and the armed forces pretend that they have.
Forward, Comrades!!!
P.S. – I wonder if the Chinese are the same.
Unlike the Russians, I think the Chinese have more than enough blood to spare unfortunately.
Also, I think us continuing to push this conflict further along is stupid. The Ukrainian government (including Zelensky) is a corrupt lot just like Putin, we should be descaling our investment in this instead of increasing, and no I’m not a Russian bot.
Well, be careful, any more talk like that and the owner of this site will beat you into submission with some OCD rant.
This Quartermaster disagrees with you. We’re doing the right thing in Ukraine. Ukraine was working to on decreasing the corruption. Putin, by comparison is at the pinnacle of corruption in Russia. That corruption he facilitated and took advantage of is the reason the Russia military is in the condition it is in.
“…and no I’m not a Russian bot.”
Ha!
That’s what they all say!
Absolute proof that you are a Russian bot!
Well, I have noticed quite a few posts and posters that could be considered bots on here lately.
However, it looks more like, I dunno, Zelensky bots maybe?
Just read through this thread for plenty of examples. I refuse to engage with any of the obvious ones.
Doesn’t matter if Zelensky is corrupt or not. That has nothing to do with the matter at hand. The Russians have engaged in a War of Aggression, making their entire military war criminals. This should have happened when they went in and stole the Crimea, but the world didn’t give a shit when that happened, did it? As with WWII, had someone stood up and hammered the Russkies then, this might not be happening now.
Yeah, but a lot of those areas of the east have been traditionally Russian for a very long time.
Lots internal politics within the Politburo led Lennin and Kruschev gifting these areas to Ukraine. At the time, it didn’t matter if these areas were mostly populated by ethnic Russians or not, since Moscow was pulling all the strings for the USSR. Russia’s Black Sea Naval base of Sevastopol is in Crimea, and that was an impending issue that would blow up sooner or later anyways.
At the end of the day, Russia is the aggressor in this conflict. Russia invaded and I’m glad they were stopped from occupying Kiev.
I think now is the time when we should be pushing more for diplomacy instead of warfare. I don’t think America has an invested interest in pursuing this more to the point where it could escalated to the point of tactical nuclear weapons being used and it turning into a war that no one wins and everyone loses.
Russia started as the small Principality of Muscovy… it did not get to be as big as it is by being nice to it’s neighbours or by respecting borders…
Stalin’s engineered famine depopulated eastern Ukraine making way for Russian “settlers” to take over the land.. this is why eastern Ukraine has a large ethnic Russian population
72-hour approval on tactical airstrikes, comrade– Robert McNamara would be proud!

Russky units shoot at each other, too, now:

People need to understand that the only good guys in this war are the poor soldiers who do the actual fighting as they think they are doing good based on the propaganda they have been fed. Those pushing this war and the carnage are the bad guys – on both sides. Those who propagate the propaganda are either paid bad guys or duped by the paid bad guys.
Here’s a Ukrainian perspective of the carnage:
The commander of the neo-Nazi Svoboda battalion, Petro Kuzik, whose unit is trying to hold Bakhmut, told Western media that the fields and forests around are littered with the corpses of Ukrainian soldiers, and they have to defend themselves in extreme cold and knee-deep in water. Asked how serious the loss of life is, he said: “They are colossal. We don’t even count the bodies.”
The Russians are waging a war of attrition and obviously have the means to do it. Right now the war is akin to the WWI trench war.
Both sides are suffering casualties. Your quote comes from a Twitter post made by somebody who is biased against Ukrainians and in favor of the Russians.
The original story describes bodies littering the wood lines, without specifying nationality. The Ukrainians are fighting from trenches littered with bodies, the Russians are also fighting from positions that are littered with bodies.
The full story.
The Twitter post that I found looking for where you could have gotten your quote:
Want to know where the Neo-Nazis are ?
”At least two neo-Nazi groups are fighting for Russian forces in Ukraine, throwing into question Moscow’s claims of “denazifying” its neighbor, German weekly Der Spiegel reported Sunday, citing a confidential intelligence report.”

Svoboda has the same status.
OTOH, Putin is surrounded by Neo-Nazis. Prigozhin, owner of Wagner PMC, is just one such scum bag.
WOW, what a revolting development
When it comes to war my sympathy usually lies with the defenders, unless say the defenders launched a substantial attack against their invader first. That obviously isn’t the case here.
Nearly every war I have ever heard of is sold as supposed to be over in a few weeks with minimal casualties. Doesn’t matter if it is the American Civil War or WWI or the 2nd Iraq War. War is easier to sell that way.
The take down of the Russian Army was very much Putin’s fault. In many ways it is the Set Up to Fail Syndrome.
https://hbr.org/1998/03/the-set-up-to-fail-syndrome
But mostly it was pure hubris based upon the limited success had in setting up other puppet states. When the dynamics on the ground were far different than what was expected, instead of a reevaluation they kept doing the same thing over and over and expected a different result.
Putin made the serious mistake of believing his own advertising. Corruption has hollowed Russia out. The military is just one part of Russia that is terminal.
