Low Black Friday Turnout

| November 26, 2022

Retail operations have gotten used to seeing parking lots filled, and customers lining up on Thursday evening. People would wait in line for hours to get to deals most do not see on a regular basis. According to one account in the article, the line would already be wrapped around the building. However, this individual did not see any line forming this year.

From Fox Business:

Parking lots at many retail stores were empty Thursday evening for Black Friday, and nobody was standing in lines awaiting the deals.

This comes in contrast to previous years in which shoppers would stand in line for hours on the afternoon of Thanksgiving in the hopes of securing Black Friday doorbuster deals.

“I see nothing. I’m surprised,” retail worker Jeremy Pritchett told FOX 2. “Normally, it’s wrapped all the way around the building. Today: no one.”

Pritchett recalls working retail during prior Black Fridays, when stores would prepare for an abundance of shoppers.

“We would get there probably around midnight, get everything set up,” Pritchett said. “We let people in early, give them donuts and coffee, you know, to try to slow down the stampede and stuff, and it was busy. But it was also one of those that it was always fun, and it’s kind of gone it looks like.”

“I think it’s a sign of the way the world is going. Virtual learning, virtual buying, everybody just wants to be able to sit on their couch and order what they want,” he continued.

According to the National Retail Federation, more than 160 million people will shop for deals online from today through Cyber Monday.

I’m sure bidinflation has nothing to do with it.

I only saw one store in town with a line around the block. It was a new dress shop that opened on Friday and was running some kind of special. The ladies were lined up literally around the block. By mid day they were selling stuff off of the window display, so whatever was going on there was big.

The only people lined up in front of the corporate headquarters of the proud but humble woman owned business that sells software to the federal government formerly located in Bethesda Maryland on Friday were process servers waiting to see the Vice President. Apparently he had a falling out with Bank of America, the falling out being that he doesn’t pay his debts.

I thought he was a member of the “lucky sperm club” with those special haplo genes?

He must be taking a page out of Daddy’s playbook when he lied to the investors in the radio station in Longview, WA.

Meh, and I decided to work yesterday instead of going just to watch. I go to things like that for the same reason most people go to the Zoo or Rodeo!

I went to the mall today just to look around … took zero effort to find a parking spot, and there was only one person in front of me in the Chick Fil A line.

Personally, I like it this way.

Lined up at Home Depot before 6 am for 1 tool then the wife had me take her 35 miles over to the former Naval Submarine Base Bangor (now merged with Naval Station Bremerton) and it was packed. Wife said Navy Exchange selection was better than what JBLM AAFES offered.

What everyone else has already said:
1-It’s the economy (stupid!) and inflation. More people are worried about buying the necessities then the niceties.
2-With so much online shopping available, why subject yourself to the slings and arrows of outrageous broken bones?

When you’re scrambling to afford heating oil, groceries and fuel for your vehicle(s), there’s little (if anything) left in the way of discretionary income.

My Black Friday? A social function with Baby Girl’s Soccer Mom Buds. A full Baker’s Dozen and the only dog in the pack was…me! Historically, those Ladies would have been camped out with a bunch of like minded bargain hunters, but they have learned their lessons and now do the “click and ship” thing And even tho they are all high up on the upper middle class to upper class income levels, they too have cut back…and they all got a kick from the meme besig posted on the WOT.

Don’t think that any citizens were shopping today, they were all on I-75. And that was no bargain.

I do 96.69% of my trade and commerce with independent, locally owned “Mom and Pop” stores.
