Oklahoma deputy wounded, man killed in Thanksgiving shooting

A 30-year-old man was killed and an Oklahoma sheriff’s deputy was wounded during a Thanksgiving morning shooting in the northwest of the state, authorities said.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said it’s investigating the shooting in Buffalo between sheriff’s deputies and a man who had attempted to enter a building with a shotgun and later opened fire on the deputies.

Harper County Sheriff’s deputies were called around 6:30 a.m. Thursday to a residential part of the town of about 1,000 people, which is 180 miles (290 kilometers) northwest of Oklahoma City. When the deputies arrived, the armed man ran and they caught up with him a few blocks away, state investigators said.

The man then shot at the deputies, hitting one of them, and they returned fire, killing him, according to the statement.

Fortunately the deputy’s injuries are not life-threatening.

Murder suspect is shot and killed during attempted arrest by Jacksonville police

Scott Butler, Florida Times-Union
Five Jacksonville police officers opened fire on a murder suspect driving toward them during an attempted arrest in Riverside, killing him on scene, the Sheriff’s Office said. He becomes the eighth suspect killed during police confrontations this year in Jacksonville.

Chief Mark Romano said it happened about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 2200 block of Ernest Street off Stockton Street. The Sheriff’s Office criminal apprehension unit had been surveilling the unidentified suspect at a home and moved to take him into custody when he came out to his vehicle.

He ran behind his house into a nearby alleyway with officers in pursuit. He was ordered to stop, but instead pulled a rifle out from beneath his hoodie, Romano said. That prompted an officer to fire at him one time.

He doubled back to the house and was able to get into his vehicle. He was again told to stop but accelerated toward the five officers, the chief said.

A car may well be a contender in a gun fight. Unless there are five guns. Thanks again to our Gun Bunny for the links.

The .41 rimfire is an obsolete blackpowder round of modest effectiveness.

The same gun, same size but modernized, in .40s&w or 10mm would be kinda cool.

Most modern “derringers” are chunky and less handy than a j-frame.

45 LC are not at all uncommon in derringers and fall right between the 40S&W and the 10mm on average in power level.

Ever handled an original versus the one you pictured? The modern guns work, yes, but are oversized and have absurd hammer and trigger springs.

On one example, I ran 550 cord through the trigger guard, and was able to lift a pair of 10 pound hand weights without tripping the trigger.

Yes, as I have one which looks just like the one pictured. The .41 rimfire is rather anemic, but is not uncomfortable to shoot in the pistol. Mine has about a six pound trigger pull. They can be purchased without FFL compliance if they were manufactured before 1899. The ammo used to be available from Navy Arms.

I should add that this was the most prolific and popular of the derringers of the 19th century. About 112,000 were made from 1867 to 1935. They were designed by Dr. Elliot who also designed the ring derringer for Remington. Some of the rare versions in excellent condition are worth over $12K. Common versions can still sell for over $1,000. When available, the ammo is loaded with smokeless powder, so the black powder cleaning regimen isn’t necessary.

You can also handload .41RF with cases designed to be primed with 6mm acorn blanks. I have a pre-1869 M95 that was manufactured w/o extractors but had them added later ( the milling eliminating the ‘Ilion, NY’ part of inscription)
Thankfully no previous owner was an idiot who ‘ flicked ‘ it open, so the hinges are fine.
I would be cautious with the smokeless Navy Arms ammo. It has a reputation for blowing up antiques. Stick with BP

A 2fer DRT is almost as good as a 2fer WOT FIRST (giggles), FIRST (ht2…well…you know) thing of a morning. Almost! Good shooting officers. Speedy recovery for the wounded LEO.

Stupidity in politics is a feature, not a bug. See DE, PA, MI, CA, ect…

The preferred weapon of Tin Horn and Riverboat Gamblers or “Ladies” of sketchy repute. Would of been nice to see an example in a garter holster attached to the thigh of said sketchy “Lady”.

Gotta roll, heading back up North. Put the word out…if you NB on I-75, you better lead, follow, or get the hell outa the way. See y’all this pm.
