Weekend Open Thread
They love the science when they think that it supports their argument. However, science does not seem to matter when it works against what they want to be the case. Not even the papers that are referenced for the “97%/99%” scientific consensus support such a “consensus”. Enjoy your weekend.

Wow! Congratulations CW!
(THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE!!)
So let it be written, so shall it be done.
You Did It!
👏👏👏👏👏
Holy crap, what dark corner were you hanging around ???Congrats and rats to you too !!!
Kong Rats to you, CW. And I’m not trying to be trivial by that. But then again, when there was no competition around you can beat your deadline and put it to bed. Roll the presses. Being as to the time frame I was in, I would’ve had to compete like this;
.._. .. ._. … _
How do you like that? I got the throne this week!
Way to go CW.
Seeing as how we no longer have a shortage (for the time being), may I offer you this?
Cheers
Perhaps cw can see fit to forward his prize to the folks of Martha’s vineyard. They seem to be butt hurt and ultra soft may be just what they need.
H/T to AW1 Rod.
LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!!
Not first, but early. A happy weekend to all you Dickweeds and Weedettes at the TAH Tavern!
From my lofty perch, I command all TAH to attend to the weekly distribution of trivia! Enjoy, friends!
DID YOU KNOW…?
Why was a pitcher’s only career home run so special to him?
By Commissioner Wretched
didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com
I just noticed something. It’s September.
That means the beginning of fall later in the month, of course, but for me it has another meaning. It means another birthday is coming up.
Assuming I stick around long enough to see it, I will be turning 64 years old on the 26th of this month. (I have no plans to do otherwise, of course, but one never knows these days.)
It’s been a very enjoyable life and it continues to be so, and I want to take a moment to thank all of you for coming along on the ride with me. Don’t go anywhere, of course, because the trivia vault is still full and I can’t wait to share more of it with you.
So here’s the latest installment, straight from the trivia vault! (I may have to start calling it that from now on. I like it.)
Did you know …
… methane produced by cows does contribute to global warming? However, the belief that bovine flatulence (look it up) is a major contributor is wrong. About 90 percent of the methane expelled by cows is belched from the cow’s mouth. (It’s really hard to fight the impulse to make a joke about politics right now, you know.)
… elephants are a lot more like people than we think? Elephants make friends, they bury their dead, they travel for “funerals,” and they even speak to each other. They are probably one of the most intelligent species on the planet. (Depending on what humans are doing, they could be the most intelligent species.)
… cats have fewer toes on their back paws? Cats have five toes on their front paws, but only four on their back. Those who worry about such things believe it helps the cats run faster. (A purr-fect theory.)
… twice in American history, three men served as President of the United States during the same year? It happened first in 1841, when the eighth President, Martin Van Buren (1782-1862) left office on March 4. Inaugurated was the ninth President, William Henry Harrison (1773-1841). Harrison died a month later, making John Tyler (1790-1862), his Vice President, the third man that year to hold the office. The same thing happened in 1881 – Rutherford B. Hayes (1822-1893), nineteenth President, saw his term end March 4. The twentieth President, James A. Garfield (1831-1881), was shot in June of that year, and Chester A. Arthur (1829-1886), Vice President, took office in September after Garfield died.
Seems to me one day Inauguration Day fell on Sunday and the P-Elect was religious so the ProTem of the Senate served for one day?
Researched the story, apocryphal. Ah well.
I featured the story in a column a year or so ago. Seems that the inauguration of Pres. Zachary Taylor fell on Sunday, Mar. 4, 1849, and Taylor – a religious man – would not take the oath on Sunday. Technically, it meant that David Rice Atchison, President Pro Tem of the Senate, was *constitutionally* president until Taylor was sworn in, but he never once claimed to have actually held the office. Historians do not recognize any claim for Atchison … but his grave marker reads, “President for one day.”
… two-thirds of all the people on Earth have never seen snow? (And the other one-third think they’ve seen too much.)
… men are six times more likely to be struck by lightning than women? (There’s a meaning in there somewhere, but I can’t find it.)
… a Major League Baseball pitcher’s only career home run was extra special to him? On May 29, 1976, Joe Niekro (1944-2006), a knuckleball pitcher then with the Houston Astros, was at the plate in the seventh inning during a game against the Atlanta Braves. Niekro would come to bat a total of 1,165 times during his 22-year career in the big leagues, but this night would be the only time he ever hit a home run. What made it extra special to him was the fact that the ball he hit out of the park was pitched to him by his brother, Phil Niekro (1939-2020), ace knuckleball pitcher for the Braves. The Astros won the game 4-3. (Back in 1976, just about everybody beat up on the poor Braves, didn’t they?)
“…two-thirds of all the people on Earth have never seen snow?”
We believe it. While stationed in Hawaii (well, SOMEONE had to do it..), our children’s Classmates and Friends asked our kids if they could have their friends or family mail them maple leaves from the Mainland. They had no concept of Autumn or Winter. We knew the Big Island had snow (we trained there), but some of those Oahu kids never left their island.
One also can get climatized while living there. One year, the temperature dropped to about 68-69 Degrees F…it was cold!!
We still believe that some Southerners don’t understand snow as well. Ever heard of Milk and Bread?

One of my BIL’s was Air Force enlisted. He and my sister had 2 daughters, very young, they went from Hawaii to Minot N.D. when he re-enlisted sometime in the 60’s, my sister told me the girls were sick for 6 months trying to get caught up on all the local N.D. viruses.

I was in basic with a guy from Hawaii. He, another two trainees, and I are marching right past the base headquarters one day about half-way through basic. All of a sudden the Hawaiian guy starts freaking out “Oh my God! Oh my God!” I thought for sure we’d missed saluting an officer or something equally dreadful.
“I just saw a squirrel!” He tells us all excited.
😆🤣😂😅😆🤣😂😅😆🤣😂😅😆🤣😂😅😆😆🤣👏👏👏👏👏👏
We Can’t Stop Laughing!!!!!
Good One, Mason!!!
What we also remember about Hawaii were those Myna Birds. They were EVERYWHERE. They even stood still on the roads.
And Mongoose. No snakes, but plenty of geikos and Palmetto bugs (cucarachas)…
The lightning one is easy. Women are inside making sandwiches while the men are outside “hunting and gathering” 🙂
… a species of frog can go eighteen months without using the bathroom? Okay, I know frogs don’t actually use a bathroom (don’t be pedantic – that’s my job). But the wood frog of Alaska can go an entire year and a half without urinating. In fact, the waste product of the frog’s kidneys helps keep the animal alive during hibernation, as special microbes in the digestive system recycle the urea into nitrogen.
… you may have enjoyed a rumfustian? What’s a rumfustian, you ask? Well, if you ask, you obviously haven’t had one. A rumfustian is a hot alcoholic beverage that was most popular during the 19th Century. It was made of egg yolks, beer, wine, gin, sugar, and spices. The word was first coined in 1824. (And if you ever try one, let me know how it tastes, okay?)
Went out on Al Gore’s Amazing Internet for a Rumfustian Recipe. Here you go:

… a sport called “aggressive sitting” exists? Created in Germany in 2008, participants in Sporthock, or aggressive sitting, use colorful plastic stools with rubber linings to perform several difficult tricks before sitting on the stool and watching others do the same. (Aggressive sitting, eh? Gotta try that in the office one day.)
… the National Football League has not always been called that? When it was formed from among ten teams in four states in 1920, it was called the American Professional Football Association. The current name was adopted in 1922. (A rose by any other name, they say …)
… starfish do not have blood? They circulate nutrients to their cells using seawater in their vascular system. (Whatever works!)
… sweat was once used as a beauty enhancement? In ancient Rome, women would wear the sweat of gladiators in an effort to improve beauty and complexion. (Ewww!)
… during the Great Depression, an African nation tried to help the United States? Things were so bad in the U.S. at one point that the French colony of Cameroon sent money to New York for food relief. Things weren’t all that great in Cameroon, either – the total sent was $3.77. (It’s the thought that counts, after all.)
Now … you know!
To be fair, back during The Great Depression, $3.77 was a lot of money.
Adjusted for inflation, $3.77 in 1930 would be $66.86 today. That would be enough to purchase a mailbox with a door, with enough left over for a pair of jumper cables for a 1980’s vintage Jaguar.

And just for comparison purposes:
Base Monthly Pay for a Buck Private:
1958 — $78.00
The year I went in — $134.00
Nowadays — $1,695.00
Wow, Claw!
We went back and pulled up our JUMPS when we enlisted.
After taxes and giving to the Soldiers Home, our pay as Privates was small compared to today. However, 3 Hots and a Cot were free as well as Medical and Dental.
We also came in before the days of Direct Deposit (We are sure others went thru Pay Day as well..Do they even have Pay Day?)
Thank You for sharing, Claw!
Do they even have Pay Day?
As a general rule, I’m guessing no. The current guidelines are that Pay Day activities will occur on the first Friday of the month that falls on a duty day, usually involves a Class A uniform inspection and all troops are to be dismissed by 1300 hours to conduct personal business.
That is for all troops who aren’t motor pool mechanics or mess hall cooks./s
I’ve also heard that part of Pay Day activities is the strippers shave their legs.
Pay Day activities.
Yep. You nailed it, Claw.
We remember as Enlisted, we had to dress in our Class A’s, be inspected in formation and then get paid in greenbacks (hat tip to rgr769).
Years later, I remember as a 1LT being designated as a Pay Officer. Was issued my assigned M1911A1, 45 Caliber pistol and escorted and guarded by MPs to pay Soldiers greenbacks.
Of course, even though I did not fire my weapon, I STILL had to take it apart and clean it. I liked the 45, but gave to admit the 9mm was easier to take apart and clean.
Thank You, Claw, for sharing!
I remember that.

My first payday in 1968, I was paid the impressive sum of $305.00 in greenbacks. I still have the LES.
We still have our old LESs as well…Green and White paper.
Good Memories.
Thank You for sharing, rgr769!
My copy was pink. When I was pay officer in the FRG, I used to drive back from Bad Kreuznach with around 60K in cash in a brown paper bag on the seat in my XKE. I found a counterfeit $20 bill in my payroll once. You wouldn’t believe the hassle that caused; I had to give a sworn statement to a court reporter at Division HQ.
Mine was green as well … and Nixon was President!
PFC/E-3 $300/month, 1976/77. Massive raise in ’77 to $330 per month. Pre-COLA, if you were someplace pricey ie. Monterey or in 1.65DM per $USD Germany…well, you lived cheap.
$608 (E1 under 4 months) when I came in (OCT 87)
Ah shucks, I vaguely recall getting something $318 a month as an E-1. There were tremendous financial and lifestyle advantages to getting married.
It was a bad bargain, either way.
Fantastic … thanks so much!
Sure do wish I felt as young as you say I am …
64? Pup!
Indeed!
Many thanks!
I hear that at 65 you are considered an “Elder”, I’ve got less then a year to get my inner child under control or he could be charged with Elder Abuse the way this FBI, DOJ works now a days.
BTW Happy B-Day!
Many thanks! (An “elder” what, I wonder?)
They lied to you, be cool, everything is gonna be all right.

Congrats on living this long so far.
Oh, and Happy Birthday to ye.
Many thanks! As my sister says, “If I’d known I was going to live this long, I’d have taken better care of myself.”

Haven’t seen any threads acknowledging the 75th Birthday of The Air Force yet. Since they are no longer the junior service, they can join in the hazing of our brother and sister Space Force members.
Speaking of which, has TAH officially recognized any Space Force commenters in our community of Semi-Fascist Adorable Deplorables? We need to diversify our demographics, much like how Martha’s Vineyard became more diversified this week.
Well I don’t know of anyone *yet* that has shouted out BUT, seeing as how I sit in chairs closest to the powers that be in that arena, I volunteer to be the lacky representative for that for the time being, NASA Nerd, Retarded Chairforce and having been stationed at Peterson AFB and Cheyenne Mountain at the HQ of the Space Command (before it was cool) AND because (I can’t remember who it was (Ninja? As part of my old/new Friday duties, here’s the Ammoseek prices for today. I hadn’t looked for a week or so cause busy and stuff, but I was surprised to see .223 & 5.56 below 40 cents. Well HOOOO Doggie…I know it’s not the olden days but it’s certainly better than 50 cents and $1 ppr.
Have a lovely weekend.
Things We Did Not Know.
We knew the Air Force was originally the Army Air Corps.
We did not realize that the Air Service which had become the Army Air Corps in 1939 was originally part of the Signal Corps. The Army Air Corps became the Army Air Force in 1942.
“The Air Force’s Other Birthday”
https://www.airforcemag.com/today-the-air-forces-other-birthday/#:~:text=While%20the%20Air%20Force's%20%E2%80%9Cbirthday,1947%2C%20which%20created%20the%20service.
“While the Air Force’s “birthday” is generally celebrated Sept. 18—the day it officially became active as one of the U.S. armed services—an equal case could be made for July 26, the day President Harry Truman signed into law the National Security Act of 1947, which created the service.”
Seventy-five years ago today, aboard the VC-54 presidential transport Truman had dubbed Sacred Cow, he signed the Act, which also organized the new Department of Defense out of the old War Department and Navy Department. The legislation additionally created the position of Secretary of Defense from the old post of Secretary of War; codified the Joint Chiefs of Staff; established the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Council; and in many other ways set the framework for the modern U.S. national security establishment.
Originally part of the Signal Corps, the Air Service had become the Army Air Corps in 1939 and the Army Air Forces in 1942. After the Air Force was established by the Act, Gen. H.H. Arnold, commander of the USAAF, became the Chief of Staff of the Air Force in September 1947.
“The military organizational changes were deemed necessary because, although the U.S. had won WWII, it now needed to efficiently maintain large standing forces and conduct large-scale intelligence collection with the new Cold War. An independent Air Force was deemed necessary to organize for the mission of nuclear deterrence along with furtherance of the science and technology of military aviation.”
“The Navy resisted the creation of a co-equal service for Air, believing it would be out-voted by the Air Force and Army and because it wanted to retain its status as the nation’s first line of defense. After ordering the branches to work out their differences—and not getting results—Truman laid out legislation interleaving drafts written by all the services.”
“Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947 aboard the Sacred Cow because he was about to fly to the bedside of his ill mother, but he delayed the takeoff until the document could be couriered to the aircraft.”
“Some pieces of the Sacred Cow flew in space aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia, which orbited in April 1997 for mission STS-83 to mark the 50th anniversary of the National Security Act of 1947—and the “other” birthday of the Air Force. The aircraft is part of the collection of the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.”

“WINGS OF STEEL” UNITED STATES ARMY AIR CORPS RECRUITING FILM from 1941″
“Shot in Technicolor, WINGS OF STEEL tells the story of a sports champion (Douglas Kennedy) who is drawn to aviation to help his country in the war effort. The film features color footage of the B-17 at :41, and Stearman training planes at 1:18 and throughout. As a recruiting film, it shows a somewhat predictable view of the indoctrination of airmen as it was done on the cusp of WWII. At 4:57 the instructor says the famous line: “this men, is an airplane!”
“At 8:30, basic maneuvering is shown with the Stearmans. At 15:19, P-40 Warhawks are seen at a basic training school at March Field. At 16:00, LINK trainers are seen in use to teach instrument flying.”

“Here are two WWII U.S. Army Air Forces recruiting films. The first “Survival of the Fittest” is about how physical training is important for survival in combat. This is copyrighted 1944. The second, “Sustineo Atlas” is about the elite the Officers Candidate School. It dates to 1943.”
Actor Clark Gable, who served in the USAAF in WWII, narrates “SUSTINEO ALAS”. The film’s title is from Latin, meaning “I Sustain the Wings”, or “Keep ‘Em Flying”. This was the motto of the USAAF Technical Training Command and its Officers Candidate School (OCS), which is the subject of the film.”

Well, as you know, there are Christians, those who have a personal relationship with Jesus; and there are “Christians”, those find it socially convenient to attend church.
Our Sunday School lesson tomorrow is from Amos 5 – which includes the verse:
That means the Lord kept 10% alive from every town. A remnant.
Looking at the history of Israel and of the Church (not meaning some denomination called a church, but the Body of Christ in fact); and the prophesies of what is to come, I am confident that God retains a remnant that
Our job is to share with others where they, too, may find grace and forgiveness. It’s God’s job to take us through whatever comes until He gathers us home.

“Lawton Man Sentenced To 5 Years For Defrauding U.S. Department Of Veteran Affairs”
https://www.justice.gov/usao-wdmi/pr/2022_0915_gray
“Joseph Scott Gray, 53, of Lawton, Michigan was sentenced to five years in federal prison for lying to the Department of Veterans Affairs to obtain over $250,000 in benefits to which he was not entitled. To obtain those benefits, Gray repeatedly told the VA he could not walk or stand, when in fact, he could.”
“On October 26, 2017, Gray went to the Battle Creek VA Medical Center for an exam, and he arrived in a wheelchair.”
“During the exam, Gray told VA employees he had not walked in 10 years and could not use his left hand. Minutes later, Gray went to a local restaurant, where he was observed freely walking in and out of the building and carrying his leftovers in his left hand.”
“After trial, the Court found that Gray
committed perjury by falsely testifying that his medication caused him lie to VA employees and that his medication caused him to go from being unable to walk one minute to able to walk the next. The Court also found that Gray falsely testified that it was his brother, not him, in videos from a local feed store in which Gray was seen walking freely and carrying a 40 – 50 lb. bag of cat food.”
“Man sent to prison after faking injuries to get $265K in benefits from U.S. Veterans Affairs”

“A military veteran who claimed he lost the use of his legs and left hand to obtain benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has been sentenced to five years in prison on fraud charges.”
“The government said that Joseph Gray, 53, of Lawton, was seen walking, even carrying a heavy bag of cat food on his shoulder, and using his left hand.”
“His wife, Paula Gray, 53, was convicted of conspiracy to defraud the government, making false statements to the VA, and making a false, fictitious or fraudulent claim. She was sentenced to three years on probation and ordered to pay the same restitution.”
“Attorney Scott Graham, representing Joseph Gray, said Gray earned military decorations during the Gulf War and “sustained life-changing injuries,” including injuries to his shoulders from a fall in Saudi Arabia. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and has post-traumatic stress disorder.”
“He also had Lyme disease, surgeries, loss of use of limbs, spinal issues, chronic pain and mental-health issues, he said.”
“Assistant U.S. Attorney Davin Reust said that Joseph Gray lied on the witness stand. He also accused Gray of spending $164,000 on home improvements, including an underground pool, after the trial.”
This kind of fraud happens frequently in workers’ compensation cases. I had some great sub-rosa video in some of my cases of guys claiming disability but engaged in all sorts of activities they claimed were precluded by their permanent injuries. We had video of one guy loading 50 pound sacks of cement in the back of his pickup; he claimed his back injury precluded lifting anything over five pounds.
If there is any government program dispensing money and benefits, it will eventually become infested with fraudsters. Only vigilance and severe penalties will curb it.

All guests must have a ticket including active duty personnel and veterans. (Children 2 & under do not count toward the guest limit.) COVID-19 immunizations are still required for guest attendance. Guests 12 or older need to provide proof of immunization (14 days post final dose,) in the form of a COVID-19 vaccination record card, to attend. If you are unable to provide proof of vaccination, you will not be issued tickets and will not be able to attend graduation.
