PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Safeway employee who was one of two people killed in a Bend, Oregon, supermarket shooting had time to flee but instead hid behind a produce cart and attacked the assailant with a produce knife, an action that likely saved lives, authorities said Tuesday.Surveillance video shows that 66-year-old Donald Ray Surrett Jr., a two-decade U.S. Army veteran, waited in his hiding spot until the gunman looked the other way. Surrett then emerged with the knife that he drew from his hip, police spokeswoman Sheila Miller said.
The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Ethan Blair Miller, on Sunday evening fatally shot Surrett and then killed himself as police closed in. Officers found an AR-15-style rifle and a shotgun near his body and police said he had four 30-round magazines for the rifle on his body when he died.

Smart moves by both women. Poor victim selection skills can be fatal.
1 of 2 burglary suspects shot by Parkland homeowner
Kevin Ko
A burglary suspect is in the hospital after he was shot by a Parkland homeowner early Thursday. Two burglars were at a home in a neighborhood at First Avenue South and 146th Street South, near Pacific Avenue South, when the resident opened fire, striking one of them, according to Pierce County Sheriff’s Department Sergeant Darren Moss Jr.
According to Moss, the burglars initially tried to get into the home through a side window, but weren’t successful. Moss said the suspects then may have tried to steal a catalytic converter from a car parked outside, when the homeowner came out.
The homeowner was pepper-sprayed before shooting at the burglars, according to Moss.

Life is imitating art again.
March to the sound of the guns. It’s the Army way. No greater love, indeed. A Salute to you, Good Sir.
Two very good examples of why you need to be armed…at all times. You never need a weapon until you REALLY need a weapon.
I could use something like that AR 7. Wouldn’t do too much to shore up the North Wall, but it would help persecute the damn tree rats that are feasting on my pecans and walnuts.
The despotic tyrants of our country have learned their lessons well from the study of Mao’s Little Red Book. Molon Labe.
Not sure if I’d want the AR7, or a Ruger 10/22 breakdown.
Don’t know if Mr. Surrett was a hero in the Army, but sure as hell was one at Safeway. After 20 years in, he should KNOW the effects of a close-range AR round better than most – and tried anyway. Ed got phone calls, texts, AND email to include this one.
It isn’t often that a man gets a shot at true redemption for evil he has done in life. Surrett likely knew when he took on the gunman with a knife that he was going to die but he went anyway. I am not the one to judge if that will tip the scales in his favor but I pray that his soul has found peace.

“A military court sentenced Surrett to 10 years in prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas after he pleaded guilty to two counts of carnal knowledge and two counts of indecent acts. According to U.S. Army spokeswoman Madison Bonzo, Surrett was demoted from sergeant first class to private as a result of the conviction. He did not serve his full 10-year sentence, and moved to Oregon in the early 2000s, according to public records.
Surrett did not reoffend after his release from prison, and law enforcement considered him a Level 1 offender, the lowest classification in the state…”
