Weekend Open Thread
There is some information floating around that Obama is going to come out to campaign for some Democrat candidates. There is other information claiming that Democrats in tough contests want to distance themselves from Biden. Enjoy your weekend!

BAM! BAM! BAM! FIRE MISSION FIRE MISSION FIRE MISSION! The King of Battle…THE KING of FIRST for the TAH Friday Weekend Open Thread (EARNED!!!! Never Awarded) can report a successful FIRE MISSION with a Battle Damage Report of 100/100 on unsuspecting Miscreanted D’Weeded Deplorables that WERE NOT using their learned SA Skills or keeping their eyes on the Coveted Target. Wasn’t even close. Da’Hell everybody at?
This FIRST ties into my comment from today’s FGS on having a weapon at all times and being prepared to defend yourself (or the Crown of FIRST). Eternal Vigilance.
Multiple servings of Orasted Beef Beast with Baby Goldens and Carrots, cat headed Buttered Milk biskets, Red Velvet Cake with Neopolitan Ice Cream is hot and ready. Your choice of refreshing beverages along with Brandy and Seegars on the Verandah of Firebase Magnolia for all hands.
KoB ROCKIN’ The FIRSTNES!!!!
Welcome back to the THRONE of Greatness.
I’ll just leave this here…I’m sure this has been beat to death but I have many weeks of reading to catch up on.
Chip, Hitler was at least intelligent. Just sayin’….
Yeah, he could give a speech without turning around and trying to shake imaginary people’s hands.
You have to be something pretty baseless to be stood up by Hitler.
Hi Joe, meet a ROCK. (Not “The”, “a”)
Oh and many smooches…good to see you here.
Hitler was a failed Artist who blamed everyone else for everything as well as a teetotaling vegan.
If only he’d gotten into art school, think of how different the world would be. Vienna could’ve used another schlock landscape artist with a wife, three kids and a drinking problem more than the alternative.
Hitler at least made corporal.
SP4, actually. Gefreiters didn’t have NCO school (Adolf’s chain of command didn’t think much of him and wouldn’t send him).
Life imitates art
A BIG CONGRATS to our favorite Rebel!!
The KoB once again Rules!
Please don’t forget this weekend!

Tanks (mobile short range Artillery), ninja. I was checking on the nearly ready rations when I realized that the time was close. Had just opened up Chromie and hit the linky button and whump…there it was…The Friday TAH Weekend Open Thread staring me in the face, showing be the FIRST to comment. I’m thinking “No way I’ll get a hit, the FIRST comment has already fallen, just not registered yet.” It even took 10-15 seconds for my “1st” to show, what with the recent delays/crashes we’ve been having. Imagine, if you will, my surprise, when it did complete the upload, that The King of Battle was, once again, the Proud but Humble holder of the Title of FIRST. Better to be lucky than good. One thing that is good will be the beef beast wid taters and carrots.
My Dawgs will be on free TV, the other games pay TV. May smoke porky chops, got some green pecan wood. Only goose that may be cooked will be our Beloved AW1Ed’s.

Wtf? Congrats KoB!

Have a GREAT weekend, you Extremists!
With all the weirdness in the world, isn’t it great that: KoB resumes the WOT throne, and the trivia is always here? With a nod to the King of Battle, I present my trivia for all!
DID YOU KNOW…?
What was the first man-made object to touch the surface of another planet?
By Commissioner Wretched
didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com
I hope you had a great summer! I certainly did.
I know summer doesn’t officially end until September 22nd, but the unofficial end is this coming weekend, which is … Labor Day.
And that gives me an opportunity to remind you of that little thing I did last spring, the first “Did You Know…?” book. If you are of a mind to do so, I’d be ever so grateful to have you visit amazon.com and look for Did You Know…? Yet Another Compendium of Useless Trivia. I think you’ll like it, maybe even enough to drop a bit of coin of the realm and pick one up.
I’m a shameless huckster, I know.
I also provide some really cool trivia … like that which follows. Enjoy!
Did you know …
… the oldest archaeological evidence of soup comes from about the year 6000 BC? The primary ingredient in the soup, it seems, was hippopotamus. (One wonders what might have been in the soup along with the hippo … crocodile meat, perhaps?)
… every Purple Heart medal awarded by the U.S. military since 1945 was made during World War II? The government commissioned the making of some 500,000 Purple Heart medals (which are given for wounds received in combat) in 1945 in anticipation of an invasion of Japan by Allied forces and the expected resulting casualties. The invasion was called off, however, after the first atomic bomb was used on the city of Hiroshima. There are still about 110,000 of the medals remaining. (Planning, folks … planning.)
Not exactly. WWII Purple Heart stocks ran out 20 years ago.
https://historynewsnetwork.org/article/176762
Noted and will be corrected in next week’s column. Many thanks!
Yes, there are still un-issued WWII Purple Hearts (and many of ’em) within the U.S. system, but various agencies that stock them for issue individually ran out and ordered more in recent years.
So … I was right … and wrong … at the same time … sounds correct.
The closing paragraph of your article states:
“With perhaps as many as 60,000 of the World War II production still spread throughout the system, it’s possible that some unknown number will still be available another 75 years from now. Let’s hope that all are.”
The article is only two years old, 5JC, so it’s pretty obvious that there are almost 60,000 WWII Purple Hearts still in the system.
Commissioner Wretched is not mistaken… 🤔
… soup is the final course in authentic Chinese meals for a reason? The reason is that the soup allows the roast duck to “swim” toward digestion. (Don’t do it, duck! You don’t know what’s waiting at the end of the line!)
… the Moon has not always been a dead body in space? Back when the dinosaurs were flourishing, more than 65 million years ago, scientists say that volcanoes on the Moon were still erupting. (Putting on a show in the sky, was it?)
Well, AIN’T THAT just Ducky?
… a fish exists that is capable of swallowing prey larger than itself? The telescopefish is a small fish that lives deep in the cold waters of the tropics and subtropics. The pale, translucent-skinned telescopefish is only about eight inches long, but it has a “distendable” stomach, meaning it can swallow prey up to twice its size without a problem. The fish gets its name from its bizarre tubular eyes, which can protrude some distance from its head, like telescopes. (So its stomach really is bigger than its eyes, eh?)
You also have the Gulper Eel.
Your knowledge of marine critters is disturbing.
*grin*

… the first man-made object to touch another planet was from the Soviet Union? In 1966, Venera 3 crash-landed on the surface of Venus, becoming the first item made by humans to reach another planet. (Before you take me to task, remember – the Moon is not a planet, but a satellite.) The first spacecraft to successfully land on another planet was also from the USSR: Venera 7, in 1970, also on Venus. The first photographs from Venus were received from Venera 13 in 1982, and Venera 14 sent back the first recorded sounds from Earth’s twin. The sound from Venus is that of a constant slow-moving wind. (An ill wind, that blows no good. I’ve always wanted to say that.)
A clarinet has been called “An ill woodwind that nobody blows good.”
Benny Goodman and Pete Fountain beg to differ.
Did you know…
Pete Fountain was in the 101st Airborne Division?
Young Poe learned this firsthand from Pete himself in a New Orleans bar which was Pete’s neighborhood hangout a few blocks off the Quarter. Poe and two other NCO’s walked in one afternoon a day before the start of Mardis Gras 1965. We were there TDY with a US Army Exhibit Unit display commemorating the Civil War Centennial.
We were in our working fatigues and when Fountain saw we were 101st he invited us to join him at the bar where he bought us several rounds and swapped war stories with us for a couple of hours. As well as being a great musician, he was a nice, down-to-earth guy.
His parting words were, “Go Army…beat Navy… 😉
… the first pitcher to win 300 games in the Major Leagues never played in the 20th Century? James F. “Pud” Galvin (1856-1902) pitched primarily for the Buffalo Bisons of the National League between 1879 and 1885, though his career lasted from 1875 to 1892. Galvin had an overall record of 365-310, with an astonishing 646 complete games. He played in a time of primarily two-man pitching rotations, however, which gave him his incredible statistics. Galvin threw two no-hitters in his career, including the first ever pitched while the visiting team. Galvin died at age 45 in 1902.
… an airplane crashed because of a crocodile? In 2010, a Filair jet was approaching landing at Bandundu airport in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The jet inexplicably began to nose over on approach and dived into the ground about a mile short of the runway, killing 20 of the 21 people on board. Why did the jet nose over? Because a passenger had somehow smuggled a live crocodile onto the plane in a duffel bag, and when the plane began its descent, the crocodile got out of the bag. The panicked flight attendant rushed toward the nose of the jet, away from the croc, and all of the other passengers did the same thing, throwing off the jet’s center of gravity and causing the crash. The croc – and one passenger, who told the tale – survived the crash. (I’ll bet the croc didn’t even have a ticket.)
… the world’s oceans are very salty? Yeah, you knew that. But consider: if all of the salt was removed from the oceans and deposited upon the land, it would cover every continent to a depth of 500 feet. (The water, on the other hand, would be nice and fresh!)
… Panama hats do not come from Panama? They were popularized in Ecuador. (Why they’re not called “Ecuador hats” I don’t know.)
… sarcasm can promote creative thinking? So said a study conducted in 2015, anyway. (Yeah, right.)
> if all of the salt was removed from the oceans and deposited upon the land, it would cover every continent to a depth of 500 feet
Can we remove enough salt to cover, say, California?
P.S.
Fuck Joe Biden
And Governor Hairgel too
California has no future
Turn the lights off when you’re through
For many, Panama is easier to pronounce than Ecuador. Another nod to our education system.
Don’t forget a nod to van Halen.
… a full-grown bear can run as fast as a horse? (They don’t race because it’s hard to find jockeys who can survive more than one race.)
… artificial banana flavoring doesn’t really taste like bananas? That’s because the formula is based on a type of banana that was practically wiped out by a 1950s plague, and no banana on Earth tastes exactly that way now. (That’s just bananas.)
Now … you know!
Another fine job, as always, on your trivia, CW. It is muchly appreciated. You keep posting them and we’ll keep reading them. And using them to win trivia contests.
I do indeed hope they’re helping with the trivia contest, KoB! I am getting reports from folks who’ve gotten my book that the items there do assist. If so, I am overjoyed!

https://www.marinecorpstimes.com/off-duty/2022/08/25/2-marines-skip-out-on-waffle-house-bill-damage-a-helicopter/
“Two Marines have reportedly staked a claim for one of the most devil dog Saturdays since 1775.”
“After allegedly skipping out on a bill at a Waffle House near MCAS Cherry Point on Aug. 20, Pvt. 1st Class William J. West and Lance Cpl. Andrew E. Carranza went on a bit of a tear, Havelock Police said, with one even proudly sporting a USMC sweatshirt during the dine-and-dash portion of the evening.”
“West and Carranza reportedly went on to vandalize a HH-46E helicopter at the local Havelock Tourist & Event Center. The two Marines walked around a number of aircraft on display, police said, before one of them climbed onto an RF-4B Phantom II to snap photos. The pair then tried to spin the helicopter blades on the HH-46E. Two windows on the helicopter broke in the process.”

“Portland Street Mob Shoots At Elderly Driver, Accidentally Kills One Of Their Own”
https://thepostmillennial.com/andy-ngo-reports-portland-street-mob-shoots-at-elderly-driver-accidentally-kills-one-of-their-own
“There were hundreds of people and cars in the area participating in an apparent illegal street takeover event, making it difficult for officers to respond and investigate the shooting,” Portland Police said in a press statement announcing that no arrests were made.”
“In addition to the elderly man who appeared to be shot, two participants of the takeover were also injured by gunfire, leading to the death of 20-year-old Cameron Taylor. A $20,000 GoFundMe campaign for his funeral says he was “struck by a stray bullet.”
“Antifa in Portland have expressed support for street car takeovers as they have become more frequent following the Antifa-BLM riots in 2020. Antifa view it as one of the ways to undermine law and order, and use up police resources.”

“A US Army Advanced Culinary Specialist breaks down every piece of gear used in the containerized kitchen or CK. The CK is equipped with an oven, griddle, refrigerator, and food warmer. Staff Sergeant Nicholas Davis explains how all the gear is used to prepare meals for soldiers.”
I still remember the days of the Mess Kitchen Trailer (MKT) which some of us would convince a fresh joe or Cherry 2LT that it was the Field Unit Kitchen. Ever hear someone ask if the Cooks had the FUK up yet?
Why am I just now learning this?
My brother owns two MKTs/FUKs. Food trucks. Watching him set one up by himself is interesting. LOL. The things are awesome.

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/exclusive-pennsylvania-candidate-mastriano-posed-confederate-uniform-army-war-2022-08-26/
“Three years before retiring from the U.S. Army in 2017, Donald Trump-backed Pennsylvania gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano posed in Confederate uniform for a faculty photo at the Army War College, according to a copy of the photo obtained by Reuters.”
“Faculty at the time had been given the option of dressing as a historical figure, people familiar with the photo said. At least 15 of the 21 faculty in the photo opted to appear in regular attire. Although one man wears a trench coat and sunglasses and another carries an aviator’s helmet, Mastriano is the only one wearing a Confederate uniform.”
Did he lynch anyone while doing so?
Thats an enlisted man’s uniform. Was he drafted?
During reenactments someone hasta play the other side, no?
Battle of the Bulge re-enactments need someone to portray committing the Malmedy Massacre and having walk back to Germany after running out of fuel, true enough. Everyone can’t be BG McAuliffe tellin’ the Germans “[Deez] Nuts!” you know.
I have a friend who does WWII reenactments. He alternates between being a Russian infantryman and a Wehrmacht soldier. He has a Chinese made copy of the BMW motorcycle used by the Germans, with all the period correct markings, down to the data plate.
Yes, you don’t have much of a Civil War battle reenactment if there are only Union reenactors. I have portrayed both sides for about ten years back in the 1990’s and early 2000’s. I had the most fun being a Confederate cavalryman. Just because one wears “the Gray” does not mean the reenactor believes in slavery. But some liked to say, “if they had known back then what we know now, they woulda picked their own cotton.”

26 minutes of KABOOM History!!!
“In this 1957 episode of The Big Picture, “King Of Battle” (TV-356), viewers are treated to a history of American artillery.”
Saw this as a lad, ninja. Saw it again one cold rainy afternnon @ Sill in ’71. Looked for my Papa both times. (Btry C 741st FA WWII). He wouldn’t watch it. Realized why a number of years later. This picture show and the reading of the story of Major (LtCol posthumously) John (The Gallant Young) Pelham, helped push me to volunteering for The Artillery. Per Napolean, the only thing better than the guns are thunderbolts. For those that don’t know, Pelham, an Alabamian (rtr) used “Old Nap” and a Parrot 10 pdr Rifled to hold a division or more for several hours, working Old Nap himself after losing the Parrot and most of his gunners. All the while singing La Marseillaise.
Thanks for posting this and the other links. Got lost over there for awhile. Did our Beloved AW1Ed “suggest” that to you, knowing that would happen?

Hopefully it will be long and painful. No, I’m not going to be the “better person.”
Word has it that the False Commander “Phony” Phil Monkress (CEO of All-Points Logistics) is having a buy one get one half off on his own personal line of fartbox tuners in the retail shop in the lobby at All-Points Logistics HQ in Merritt Island, Florida.

Gonna have to take a while and watch all of ninja’s offerings. Look like fun.
Don’t know precisely what to say about PINO Joe’s rant last night. The tactics are pure Nazi. But we’ve not given up our firearms like the poor folks in Germany did. But I sure hate to see what’s going on in our beloved country.
Friend of mine on the Buch of Faces spoke out against the Narrative – and especially some lesbian librarian’s offering LGBTQXYZ porn to our counties’ children. Liberal reporter trying to set him up for an “interview” – fortunately he is refusing, knowing it for what it is. Having to battle the pervert groomers in one’s hometown is troubling.
Many people see the writing on the wall and long ago and started sharpening the tines of their pitchforks.
Tru dat, API.
Not so much surprised, though. The state U in town is a festering cesspool of libtards – although there are some sensible conservatives there as well.
The pushback against the lesbians who put out the display at the library has started. Just gotta get hunkered down in the trench to prepare for the fight.
He didn’t say anything new.

You’re right, what he said was right out of 1939.

Hopefully, those of us who fought in that war will live long enough to piss on her grave. She is a traitor just like Lurch.

US Navy Commander Dean Samuel Laird, also known as “Diz” Laird, was the only U.S. Navy Ace to have Combat victories in BOTH the Pacific and European theaters of World War II. He is given credit for 5.75 aerial victories. Laird flew 138 fighter missions during World War II. Laird is a Distinguished Flying Cross recipient. He served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was a recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal.
He recently passed away:

Among the medals he was awarded over the course of his career were two Silver Stars, two Bronze Stars with Valor, two Purple Hearts, and the Distinguished Service Cross. He also holds the distinction of being the first American to receive an award from the Netherlands after being awarded the Military Order of William Orange Lanyard.
He is still being considered for the Medal of Honor for his service and leadership during the Battle of the Bulge.

Rest in Peace Sir, you’ve earned your place in History and Valhalla.
Asking for a little help here on a project I’ve got going.
Am doing research on which states will issue a National Defense Service Medal specialty automobile license plate(s) upon request.
So far, I’ve come up with five (Maybe six?): Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Ohio, and Texas. Also there seems to be NDSM plates issued by the Indian Nations (Oklahoma?).
So, I humbly ask that you Dickweeds/Weedettes research your home state DMV site and report if any of them offer a NDSM plate.
Thank You for your time and looking forward to hearing from you.
Not seeing it for Arizona. Lots of military related themes though.
Got it. Thanks.
Maine allows one of 35 decals to be placed on regular veteran
plates and disabled veteran plates.
I do not see the NDSM listed.

Hmmm. interesting. Here’s what the State of Colorado says about Vietnam Veteran’s Plates:
Who qualifies: Any person who can demonstrate being a member of the U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam engagement (08/07/1964 – 05/07/1975).
Guessing you don’t have to have been awarded the Vietnam Service Medal to qualify, all you gotta say is “Yep, I was there”.
Negative from the Gunshine State. Pretty near everything else, though.
Okay, Thank You.
