Permanent time change hits “brick wall” in the House
Okay, I’ll admit it: I NEVER thought I would thank the House for saving us from the Senate’s stupidity. You may remember that the Senate unanimously passed Marco Rubio’s Sunshine Protection Act to make Daylight Savings time permanent. The vote was very iffy: the bill was introduced, unanimous consent was moved (and not one Senator was awake enough to object!) and so the bill was passed unanimously. Bill passes unanimously Guess you could say that the good part was that the usually deadlocked Senate for once came together. The bad part… they came together for nap time.
The main impediments dimming the legislation’s chances of passing appear to be fundamental disagreements over its language and a general consensus that other matter (sic) take precedence as the House grapples with high inflation, gun massacres and fending off judicial threats on issues such as abortion and marriage equality.
“I can’t say it’s a priority,” Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. (D-N.J.), the chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, told The Hill recently.
The legislation received a warm welcome from some House members immediately after it passed the Senate — Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said she supported making daylight saving time permanent — but others noted that there were far more pressing issues to address.
As anyone who has read my twice-annual comments on DST knows, I have never been a fan of the whole spring-forward/fall- back routine, and one of the contributors to the log-jam is that just like most legislators, they can’t agree on where to start. EST+1? Standard EST? Key West “sun’s over the yardarm somewhere” time? Or China-style “everyone is on ONE time zone, suck it up”. But I am also automatically suspicious if Pelosi likes anything, and think that if we just left the time zones alone and stuck with the same kind of zones almost everyone else copes with – hey, you’re in Chicago, you’re an hour ahead of me in Denver – we would do just fine.

Put me down as a fan of doing away with the time change. Pick one and stay with it. I really don’t care which one either. We got along just fine without screwing with the clocks for centuries.
How about we leave it up to the individual States to decide if they want to jump at the whim of the Federal Governemnt or not?!
Arizona has had no DST change for decades and suffers not a bit over it.
I’ll just leave this here.
Good call. I’ll see your Guess Who and raise you a cover of Pink Floyd’s Time from Dub Side of the Moon:

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it’s sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you’re older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

What about this classic??? 😷
A: Guess Who sings No Time.
B: Who?
A: That’s right.
B: Who?
A: Yeah, I said that’s right.
B: And I said who?
A: Guess Who?
B: Who?
I’m all about DST, having spent a fair amount of time in Germany in the winter. When you only get 7-8 hours of sunshine, they need to be the optimal hours.
On the other hand, stationed in Israel on one DST but working with Palestinians who haven’t made their DST switch, and neither was online with DST changeover in the States made for confusion in scheduling.
Picking one and sticking to would be good; some have said that Standard time is best but I didn’t sleep enough last night to remember why.
And, yeah, if the current Speaker of the House is for it, that’s a big red flag.
Spring forward and stay! Sunrise after eight up here in the north makes for good sleeping.
