Army Couple Steals Millions. Allegedly.

Wheels of Justice grind slow, but grind exceedingly fine.

Several of our usual suspects send us this little yarn about a couple in the Army who decided to better their situation by selling stolen equipment, and keeping some choice items for themselves.

Army Couple Accused of Stealing $2 Million of Gear, Including a Sword and Weapons Parts

Military.com | By Steve Beynon

A husband and wife, both serving at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, are accused of using their positions there to steal, resell and keep more than $2 million worth of Army gear, including weapon parts, vehicles and a sword.

Prosecutors claim that Chief Warrant Officer 3 Christopher Hammond, who serves with B Company, Group Support Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, and his wife, Maj. Heather Hammond, carried out at least a four-year scheme ordering gear through official Army channels meant to supply units but diverting it to sell or use for themselves.

The pair were arrested Monday and are awaiting a date for their next court appearance.

Prosecutors say the pair jointly moved $1.8 million in profits through multiple USAA and Schwab Brokerage accounts, some of which were in Heather Hammond’s name.

Between December 2018 and this past March, Christopher Hammond obtained lower and upper receivers, gun barrels, gun bolts and firing pins — which when combined can build a rifle, according to the charges. He also obtained scopes, gun cases and holsters.

Under the jail. Thanks, US.

Yup. If you’re going to steal, at least get elected as a Democrat first so you can get away with it.

I love it when a low-life thief gets caught. In this case, it’s twice as nice. Hammer ‘em.

A Proud Infidel®™

I wonder if he’s already gotten the hammer during shower time in the slammer?

I they had just brought a good supply SGT into their scheme…

What say you, Claw? 😉

Needed a SNCO to serve as Supply Thief…I mean CHIEF of the whole operation. Every SNCO has a little larceny in their hearts.

I admit nothing. Call my lawer. However… There was this time in 1989 when I, as a young corporal, was shifted to another platoon. The first direction given to me by my new section sergeant was “go steal everything back you stole from this platoon”. Technically I didn’t steal it, I merely secured a few unsecured items.

Some more information:

“Heather Hammond has served 11 years in the Army and is a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, according to Downs. She is assigned as an assistant professor of military science at Campbell University, a private college located in Buies Creek, N.C., about 20 miles north of Fort Bragg.”

“Christopher Hammond’s Army biography was not available Thursday, according to the service. Dickson said Hammond had been stationed at 3rd Special Forces Group since 2018, but he was not a Green Beret”

The 14 page Indictment charges can be found at this link:

https://www.stripes.com/branches/army/2022-06-09/army-couple-stolen-equipment-soldiers-6287757.html

“The 14-page indictment charges Chief Warrant Officer 3 Christopher Hammond used his position as an armament systems maintenance warrant officer in Fort Bragg’s Group Support Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group to request Army gear including firearms parts, night-vision goggles and all-terrain vehicles, and taking the equipment for himself and selling it illegally to civilian buyers. It also charges his wife Army Maj. Heather Hammond, an ROTC instructor at North Carolina’s Campbell University, aided and abetted her husband’s scheme.”

ninja

“Prosecutors said the thefts occurred between December 2018 and April 2022. They claim Christopher Hammond used his Army email to request goods from the Defense Logistics Agency and at least one manufacturer, which he claimed were for his unit. The Hammonds pocketed dozens of items and sold at least some for a profit of at least $2,011,841, according to the indictment. The pair funneled the money through a bank account and investment accounts, according to prosecutors.”

“The stolen weapons parts included gun barrels, firearms magazines, firing pins, gun bolts and scopes, prosecutors said. They also said Christopher Hammond wrongfully requested and took tools, gym equipment, electric guitars, bayonets and a sword. It was not clear whether he sold all the gear that he requested or if he kept some for himself.”

“A grand jury issued the indictment last month, and it was unsealed Monday after the couple turned themselves into law enforcement..”

“electric guitars”??? I can understand a SF Group needing gym equipment and weapons parts but electric guitars? Maybe I’m wrong but I can’t see them doing a music competition 🤒 .

ninja

Berliner…

We thought the same thing!!

Am guessing the electric guitars may have been on the 82nd Airborne Division’s Band MTOE?

Calling on Claw with NSN for Electric Guitars for an Army Band!” 😎 😉

ninja, just use the Standard S1798 and write in “electric guitar” where it says machine gun. Also good for ordering jukeboxes or pizza ovens. *giggle*

$3.5 to almost $6K?

*Gulp* Wonder what the price is for the strings!

Strings. Would strings be Class IX, Claw?

Maybe Chief should had ordered the strings instead of the guitars..and now wondering if Mr and Mrs. Chief and Major sold those items on Ebay..

Thank You, Claw. BEST Supply Daddy EVER.

😎😁

Claw

Guitar Strings as Class IX? I’m thinking not, probably Class II/IV, as components of a property book end item, like screwdrivers and pliers. The strings are ordered as a set, not individually. NSN examples are:

7720-01-519-4063 6 String Acoustic Guitar String Set

7720-01-519-4064 4 String Bass Guitar String Set

Electric Guitar String Sets are 7720-01-548-0118/0119.

Slick Goodlin

Back in the 70’s in was common for Army Company dayrooms to have a pool table and an upright piano.
For lower ranking EM, broke, no car and stuck in the barracks
These days, electric guitars and PlayStations are probably the current equivalent.

As previously noted, Major Heather L. Hammond is an Executive Officer with the ROTC Battalion at Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina.

How ironic that this is posted on their Website:

https://www.campbell.edu/rotc/

“Develop your leadership skills and graduate as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army through our nationally acclaimed Army ROTC program, the Campbell Battalion”

I wonder how much 3rd Groups mission readiness suffered because of this backstabbing bullshot.

Andy11M

I was trapped inside a company arms room for nearly 14 months, and I never felt the urge to try and steal SARP, but my replacement after I left the unit wasn’t so lucky. There are supposed to be safe guards to stop this, and if some joe stealing a few hundred dollars of SARP can get caught almost immediately, how da fook did nearly 2 million worth of SARP walk out the back door without someone noticing something odd was going on?

Berliner

They got caught when an individual sought service from the manufacturer on 26 out of 50 items under the warranty given the government for the items. The manufacturer said WTF? who are you? And the 💩 rolled downhill from there picking up speed. 😜

Arby

Over half the items required warranty work? Sounds like military grade to me. 😉

I hear you Andy11M, I myself spent some time during my Military Career in Supply and Logistics and NEVER EVEN ONCE thought about pulling shit like this couple of Elmer’s glue-eating dunderheads did!

Since these Army officers were selling AR lowers they ordered through the Army supply chain, these would be full-auto/burst M-4 lowers. The sale of each one would be a violation of the 1934 NFA. They are both going to spend many years in Leavenworth.

ninja

Thank You, rgr769, on this information…we learned something new from you today (the 1934 NFA).

If the good Major has not attended CGSC at Leavenworth by now, then this will be her chance. With her hubby.

So we guess they both will before a Civilian/Federal Court? I know I asked this question before, but can they also go before a Court Martial Board and be punished?

USAA. Thanks to those two (and others USAA fraudsters), our USAA insurance price may go up…again…

😖

And in the meantime, Hunter and Joey and Pauli P and the Clintons are getting away with their crimes…

rgr769

The 1934 NFA is what outlawed the private ownership of full-auto firearms unless one has a class III federal firearms license. It was enacted in response to the multiple killings with the “Chicago Typewriter” by the bootleg gangs.

rgr769

In view of the fact that it was the Army’s gear they stole, I would think they will receive General Court martials. But big Green could defer to the federal courts and then give them admin dismissals which would forfeit all their VA benefits.

Nor did they go about attempting to sell outdated Red Hat Software to the US Government.

Or perhaps _Mr._ Hammond’s organ. 😵

I did not realize The False Commander “Phony” Phil Monkress (CEO of All-Points Logistics) had a niece and nephew (by marriage) in the Army.

Though if I seem to remember correctly, Phildo wrote a book of sorts on being in the Army. Will need to verify that.
