Magic 8 Ball, will Hack Stone score three consecutive First Posts on the This Ain’t Hell Weekend Open Thread? Magic 8 Ball says…

Hack Stone

All signs point to Yes.

ChipNASA

Holy Crap, we have a NEW ACE!!!!
Scrolls down thread to see KoB shitting himself….
*crickets*.
MAYDAY !!! MAYDAY!!! WE HAVE A MIA, KOB BFD EYYY EYE EYYY OOOHHHH!!!!
Or something like that.
Present and accounted for SIR!!!
God Save the QUEEN!!! Hack Stone!!
(I mean I have no idea what he identifies as on his off time… 😅 )

KoB

No Bidenitis here Chippy. My BMs are as regular as a German Train Schedule. And I am so very proud of Hack Stone for getting his Trifecta of FIRST. There is not too many of those around. Even fewer quad forty Bofers, 4 in a row, and of course there is only ONE (1) True ACE, 5 in a row, THE King of First, The Gun Bunny Hisself. (Multiple times I may add)

Now, what you needz to be doing, instead of prattling around on this thread, is gettin’ yo’self over to the Fake AF Major and that Farr from an Angel Thread and get with the deploying of the TAH As(s)teroid of Insults on BOTH of them POSers. IMHO, a “Do It Baybee” should suffice for an AYE. Thaank yah…Thaank yah verruh much!

Better to have a Magic 8-ball than be behind the Proverbial 8-ball.

Methy, methy, methy… 😜

Hack Stone gets a trifecta! Three in a row … two more and he’s an ace!! Congratulations, Hack!

Commissioner Wretched

Having seen Hack Stone anointed again as FIRST in the WOT, I offer in tribute this week’s trivia!

DID YOU KNOW…?
What Russian city was renamed three times during the 20th Century?
By Jack Bagley
didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com

I must correct yet another error from a previous column, it seems.

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote that the most difficult character in Chinese writing uses 62 strokes to write. It’s prnounced “biang” and actually has no meaning.

Some dear friends at valorguardians.com pointed out that while “biang” might indeed have no meaning, it uses only 57 or 58 strokes (depending, I guess, on who’s writing it).

I stand corrected, but I also ask: What’s four or five strokes between friends, anyway?

If you spot me in an error, I appreciate a correction. E-mail me at didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com and I’ll make sure the correction is noted.

Now, on to this week’s trivia!

Commissioner Wretched

Did you know …

… the law in Louisiana says that if you use false teeth to bite someone, you are committing aggravated assault? (What do they call it if you use your natural teeth? Biting commentary?)

… in the United States, about 75% of all households possess at least one jar of peanut butter? (Whether they eat it or not is another story.)

… when a double rainbow occurs, the colors of the second arc are the reverse of the colors in the first arc? (It’s really cool to see that, even if it makes you do a double take at first.)

… the odds of a person being born on February 29 are not great? According to those who determine such things, the chances of a person being born on Leap Day are 1 in 1,461. (Long odds for a short day, I think.)

Commissioner Wretched

… the last man to visit the Moon left his daughter’s initials in the dust? Just before climbing back into the Lunar Module of the Apollo 17 mission on December 14, 1972, astronaut Eugene Cernan (1934-2017) took a moment to draw the initials “TDC” in the lunar dust. The letters are the initials of his daughter, Teresa Dawn Cernan (born 1963). It is expected that her initials will remain undisturbed in the Moon’s airless dust for at least 50,000 years. (Imagine the lunar archaeologists who stumble on those initials centuries from now … “What’s a TDC?”)

David

Top Dead Center. Any mechanic knows that.
(confession: I named my youngest, whose initials were ACP.)

SFC D

Tongduchon.

Anonymous

With the bar strip and hookers… er… juicy girls outside the gate.

Commissioner Wretched

… brain development is the reason most people can’t remember the first few years of their lives? Our brain stores the memories of everything, but because one special part of the brain which controls access to memory – the hippocampus – is not fully developed until a person is around four years old, the earliest memories are inaccessible. (In my case, it’s because I didn’t do anything worth remembering until I was six.)

Commissioner Wretched

… a Russian city was renamed three times in the 20th Century? In 1901, the first year of the 20th Century, the city of St. Petersburg on the Baltic Sea served as the capital of the enormous Russian Empire. In 1914, with the start of World War I, the city’s name was changed to Petrograd to remove the “German-sounding” –burg ending. The capital was moved from Petrograd to Moscow – which had been the capital of Russia until St. Petersburg was constructed – in 1918. In 1924, the city was renamed again, to Leningrad, in honor of Vladimir Lenin (1870-1924), founder of the Soviet Union. Following the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, the city on the Baltic was again renamed, this time back to its original St. Petersburg.

Commissioner Wretched

Additional trivia note: A joke that made the rounds in Russia in the late 1990s tells of the elderly man who went to apply for his pension, having lived in the same house his entire life. Asked where he was born, he said, “St. Petersburg.” Asked about where he went to school, he said, “Petrograd.” Asked where he retired, he said, “Leningrad.” And asked where he was living at the time, he said, “St. Petersburg.” (I never said it was a funny joke.)

David

Way I heard it, he’s asked where he wants to live and replied St. Petersburg (meaning not under Communism). Funnier when it was current.

Commissioner Wretched

I heard that version too … and chose the one I used to show the full progression. You’re right, it was funnier back in the day.

Hack Stone

TCFKAL (The City Formerly Known As Leningrad).

Commissioner Wretched

… no nation in South America had a woman as head of state until 1974? In that year, Isabel Perón (born 1931) became head of state of Argentina. Perón succeeded her husband, Juan Perón (1895-1974), who had taken power after a return from exile in 1973. Isabel Perón served as president until 1976, when she was deposed in a military coup. (I wouldn’t make a joke here if my life depended on it.)

Commissioner Wretched

… the “Red Baron” was not considered a good pilot? Flying for the German Army in World War I, Manfred Freiherr von Richtofen (1892-1918) was at first considered a below-par pilot, and even crashed his airplane during his first flight in 1916. For the next two years, however, von Richtofen was the true terror of the skies. He shot down 80 British and French aircraft before he himself was shot down by a sniper on the ground on April 21, 1918. So great was the respect that the British had for the Red Baron, he was buried by them with full military honors. (And no, it wasn’t Snoopy who shot him down, either.)

Hate_me

Some men transcend the symbolic barriers of guidons and boundaries.

All real men pray for worthy foes.

Commissioner Wretched

… the first baseball team to win a World Series after being relocated was the Milwaukee Braves? The team won the 1957 World Series against the New York Yankees just four years after moving from Boston to Milwaukee. (A Brave move, no?)

… a village in the Netherlands has no roads? The town of Giethoorn instead has underground paths and canals that its residents use. Nobody walks around on the surface, since the entire village is connected by the underground canals. (It could be worse. You could have to swim from house to house.)

Roh-Dog

“…Brave move…”

Groan.

The Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series
in their 2nd year, after moving from Brooklyn, NY.

Milwaukee won the World Series in their 5th season.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1959_Los_Angeles_Dodgers_season

Commissioner Wretched

The Dodgers were the fastest to win it after relocation, but the item said “The first team to win a World Series after relocation.”

That’s the Braves in ’57. The Dodgers did it in ’59.

… the World Custard Pie Championship is held each year in England? Since 1967, the town of Coxheath has staged the competition annually. Originally it was held to raise funds for the construction of a new town hall.   (Now it’s just for the pie, nothing but the pie. Custard’s last stand, you might say.)

Now … you know!

Doesn’t Cums-alot not understand she isn’t the president, and the VP isn’t in the military chain of command? You are essentially the senior most staffer in the POTUS’s cabinet. Short trip escort duty again today, but the bestest good news is the Celebration continues. Box arrived full of Omaha’s Bestest Beast; Beef, Porcine, and Formerly Feathered. I have to say, the .223 and 5.56 are about $0.10 higher than they were a few weeks ago but it’s still not too bad.

poetrooper

Not sure if we have any armor branch types here but if so, ol’ Poe would be very interested in hearing their assessments of what appears to be going on in Ukraine where Russian armor appears to be highly vulnerable to the Javelin system and other anti-armor weaponry.

Looking at some of those videos, Poe’s thinking that being infantry might be a good thing in this conflict. Of course, there’s a strong probability we’re being propagandized by the Ukes.

Hate_me

Not specifically armor, but was mechanized for a bit while a combat engineer. Long story short, tank killing was a side job that got major focus.

I can’t speak to the technical specifications of modern Russian armor (though I’ve yet to see evidence that any APS-equipped systems have been killed), but anything can be stopped if it can be canalized. It’s a lesson we should have learned in Iraq when we made our trucks too heavy to drive across sunflower fields. Ukrainian springtime mud makes roads vital – and roads, by nature, canalise.

I promise you, if I know where you’ll be and can’t kill you outright, I’ll throw you high enough in the air that you and all your buddies will die on impact.

5JC

Somewhere long ago in galaxy far, far away I led a Bradley Stinger Platoon, also at some point a Stinger Platoon. I will tell you that there is a ton propaganda out there but the reality is that the Russians pretty much walked right in to a sucker punch.

The Stinger really is that good and so is the Javelin. Guys hiding in the woods with dismounted missiles are going to play holy hell with tanks, armored vehicles, logistic support vehicles and all kinds of air craft that aren’t capable of at least Mach 2 and even then. Russia has been unable to reliably get fuel to their force and it shut them down.

Historically, if you look through the lens of a highly resistant, high morale defenders versus an unmotivated dispirited invading force the defenders either win or make the cost so high that the invader has regrets. It doesn’t matter whether it is Spain, Finland, Yugoslavia or wherever, if the people have a vested stake in winning as opposed to losing they will fight to the death.

poetrooper

Best thing to come out of this invasion is the knowledge NATO has gained about Russian capabilities or, more, accurately, lack thereof. All these decades we’ve worried about the mighty Russian bear, especially their armored forces, and now we are seeing they can’t even handle a single neighboring country, much less the combined forces of the thirty NATO nations.

When this current war ends, the big downside, as ol’ Poe sees it, has to all belong to Russia. They’re going to have to sweat losing even more territory. The Turks have to be casting covetous eyes to their eastern and northern neighbor states like Armenia, Georgia, Abkhazia, Chechnya, even all the way to the Caspian Sea through Azerbaijan and Dagestan. That could make Turkey tri-coastal and the major power in that region.

Also, Russia won’t have that armored bear threat looming over the table when negotiating contracts for their oil and gas to NATO states.

poetrooper

And then there’s the Red Dragon, sharing all that border with Russia’s resource-rich Siberia and thinking it might not be so risky after all, to bite out a chewable chunk of that natural wealth from time to time.

Poe thinks Putin’s screwed the pooch… 😉

The idea Ukrainistan will be paradise once/if they derussify is a big ol’ pipe dream.
You think things are bad now, wait for a period like The Troubles now that they’re awash with weapons and the natural response will be to purity-spiral down the drain.

Maybe that’s NATO/UN’s longterm strategy but I’d gd guarantee the scant civilian casualties marked down as of now will grow by magnitudes if they ‘peace keep’ the place.

But still, I’ll be praying for Peace.

Roh-Dog

Some of them were even told they were on a training operation. Putin literally gives zero fucks about the soldiers in the Ukraine. Morale is hovering somewhere between zero and minus something.

They are doing a good job presenting the case for our second amendment in the United States.

Now if our ‘leaders’ would care to listen… whole’nother story.

I get that some Ukrainians (by some polls a majority) would like to join the western systems but it doesn’t take much of an ideological foe to screw up any long-term planning.

I’m worried that the US et al are playing a very short-sighted game when half of the world is looking for reasons to de-dollar.

And I’ll say this again, I don’t want to be involved in ANY fight over there, it ain’t my business and how I feel doesn’t matter.

I know you guys love to hate me, and I love a debate, but it is clear that most of you don’t.

I enjoyed the discussions on occasion, but those times have been getting fewer and farther between.

Therefore I am outta here.

For the record, I am a retired LTC, Infantry turned MI. I served in the first Gulf War (101st), Korea (2ID), Haiti (82nd), and Iraq and Afghanistan (various Joint and SOF operational and staff assignments).

I’m currently serving as a DAC and have some insight as to why a lot of the craziness happens (it’s mostly money and changing leadership priorities).

It’s been real, but it hasn’t been fun for a while. I wish you the best- especially Ol’ Poe.

SFC D

I’m sure your mama is very proud of you.

poetrooper

Well hells bells, you are indeed a colonel, just not the one I thought you were. As for it not being fun for a while, ol’ Poe will remind you once again that you could make your visits here a lot more enjoyable for everyone here, including yourself, if you could just give up that aloof tone of pedantry you almost always resort to, regardless of topic.

So you were 101st and 82nd, just like ol’ Poe, who would remind you of the driving mantra of both those Airborne units:

All the way, up the hill, all the way, Airborne, all the way, meaning of course that you never, ever quit, you never give up.

And that, Colonel, is precisely what you are doing here; you are giving up because you keep losing arguments here or, at least fail to convince with your condescending comments.

You were infantry…then you should damned well know that when you repeatedly fail tactically, you change your tactics, a lesson, Colonel, that you seem to have never learned.

You don’t have to pull out, abandon your position, simply because you have failed to achieve your objective of influencing the hearts and minds of all the dickweeds who frequent this site.

Rethink your tactics–lose the air of superiority and address the dickweeds as peers, meaning don’t lecture, but simply converse, and in doing so, impart the knowledge and insights you possess.

Steeley, you do contribute to this site, but in a discordant and obnoxious manner, primarily due to your unfortunate habit of talking down to the troops.

Ol’ Poe will hate to see you leave because you are an excellent source of insights as well as a worthy debate opponent. Should you decide to stay, just one simple request: quit talking down to us and treat us as your fellow veterans, okay?
