Leaked video shows harrowing F-35 crash aboard carrier Carl Vinson.
By Geoff Ziezulewicz
A video leaked online shows the harrowing crash of a F-35C Lightning II jet aboard the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson last month.
The 51-second video shows the jet’s rear erupting into flames as it hits the deck and slides the length of the carrier before dropping into the South China Sea at about 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 24.
Someone appears to scream “wave off!” several times before the jet impacts, and deck crew can be seen running about after the jet fell into the water.
Naval Air Forces officials confirmed “that there has been an unauthorized release of video footage from flight deck cameras” aboard Vinson.“There is an ongoing investigation into both the crash and the unauthorized release of the shipboard video footage,” Cmdr. Zachary Harrell said in a statement.
A US warship remains on station until a salvage effort will begin. China would grab it in a heartbeat otherwise. Thanks, Mick.

China likely has it already….
Came here to say that.
There are no “easy days” in Naval Aviation.
Any landing you can walk away fro….I mean, eject successfully from, is a good landing… so this was an “ok” landing? 😀
What if you eject, the plane lands by itself and you can still use it for the next 18 years?

Hmm, I think I might have heard that story before. Now, where on earth . . . oh, yeah:

Flipper (1965) we got this

Pilot and 7 others injured. Ramp strikes aren’t normally that forgiving.
A lot to speculate about – malfunction maybe, or was too high on the approach and tried to save the landing by pulling off too much power in close.
Turbofan engines bit a number of guys back in the 1970’s. The RPMs and thrust would take a long time to spin back up from lower power settings making it impossible to to stop the descent rate in close.
The rate of descent looks quite high at the start of the video.

Let China have it! Underperforms, over budget, bug ridden. Let China lose money on trying to make it work properly.
Kinda like Afghanistan??
(Sorry, SOMEBODY had to say it. 😀 )
That was so painful to watch:
And another video of the crash was posted in late January 2022 on Instagram that the US Navy confirmed:
“Navy Confirms Video and Photo Posted to Social Media Show F-35C Crash Aboard Carl Vinson”

This video shows more of the approach from the PLAT camera in the flight deck. The approach looks fairly normal, a bit left of center but then at about 16 seconds the plane suddenly drops like the proverbial tub of bricks for some reason. I won’t speculate further. I hope the accident report gets posted somewhere.
More disturbing is that when I actually read the Navy Times article (as opposed to just watching the vid) I read that that this is the fifth major accident for this air wing in a few months. That’s not good at all.
0:37 that’s an ejection!
Been following this one too. Good chance we may never know the complete “rest of the story”, but there’s a real good chance that ever who released that video will be found and appropriately punished. Swift recovery to the injured Sailors.
Remember when our Aerial Artillery Platforms that were launched from floating airfields has 2 motors? You know, in case one flamed out coming back from the Danger Zone? Guess they put those designs on ice, man. Pepperidge Farms remembers.
Guess we really won’t know how good the F35 is until the long anticipated release of “The Movie” this coming May.
The son of an old friend that I grew up with works on the deck of the Carl Vinson. He emailed his dad after the incident to let him know he was not one of those injured.
And then there’s this:

It’s going to take a lot of rice to dry that thing out.
A perfectly good Fighter Jet turned into scrap metal!
Did they crash a Super 18?
