Deputy shot in Coachella, man killed during confrontation

Ani Gasparyan and Christopher Damien
A deputy-involved shooting in Coachella resulted in a deputy being transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound on Friday night, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The shooting occurred at the 51700 block of Cesar Chavez Street at around 6:30 p.m, said Sgt. Deanna Pecoraro.

When deputies pulled a vehicle over, a man fled on foot. One deputy gave chase, according to a news release. The two exchanged gunfire. The deputy was hit and the suspect killed. The man’s identity has not yet been released.

Resident shot in chest during Weatherford home burglary; suspect also injured, police say

Jessika Harkay
Two people were injured, including a victim with a gunshot wound to the chest, after a burglary attempt early Saturday morning, Weatherford police said.

The incident occurred around 2:15 a.m. near the 1400 block of Shadow Run Drive. Officers were dispatched to the area on a report of a burglary with shots fired.

“Upon arriving on scene, officers found one victim at the residence who had sustained a gunshot to his chest,” police said. “The victim was transported by LifeCare to a hospital in Fort Worth, where he is in a stable condition.”

A witness was able to identify a known suspect, the police department said. Weatherford police brought in the Fort Worth Police Department to help with the investigation.

Fort Worth police officers were able to find the suspect involved in the burglary at a local hospital, “where he was receiving care for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound sustained during this incident,” police said.

Thanks again for the links, Gun Bunny.

War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. — John Stuart Mills

At 81 years old, and with arthritis, I find that pulling the slide on my 1911 is pretty difficult. I bought a S&W Shield EZ in 9MM, because its slide moves much easier than the 1911, and as a plus, the magazine has a “pull down tab” that lets loading the magazine be much easier. At first I was concerned that the weaker spring might make it jam, but after firing over 350 rounds through it, (so far), it hasn’t jammed even once.

A DRT and WOT…not a bad start to the work week. Swift recovery for the deputy and citizen. May the worms enjoy the dead dirtbag and hopes for Bubba, Thor, Julio, and Mr. “Tiny” enjoy the wounded dirtbag.

I feel your pain, Frankie Cee. Getting old ain’t for sissies. I’m a shade over a decade younger than you, but am seeing the onset of those problems. My NIB Kimber 1911 Custom LW racks a lot easier than the Colt I had back yonder, but that may become more of an issue later. Henceforth, a good reason to have a nice little wheelgun hide-a-way. One of the features I liked about the Kimber was the dual safeties that allows a carry with a round chambered. Not a big fan of having a round chambered, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Sister has that S&W in the 9 mil she is looking to trade for a wheelie because of the racking issue.

Stay safe…stay warm. Y’all colder there than it is in Black Hawk SD where my brother is.

I always carry with a round chambered. My “Shield EZ” doesn’t have a lever safety, (while one is available), but the grip safety is adequate for my use. I have a couple of Revolvers, both being of larger caliber than 9MM, but being double action and with a pretty stiff pull, I cannot get myself as accurate with them as with my semi auto weapons.

Frankie,

I had not given much thought to what you said until recently. My older sister recently purchased a handgun at MCAS Beaufort Exchange. She had issues with grip strength in cycling the action on the semi-autos. She ended up with a six round 9mm revolver with full moon clips. One of the Marines present suggested she may also want to get a .wav file of the action cycling of a pump shotgun to play over the sound system over Siri.

My suggestion for folks who aren’t firearms astute and can’t maintain their proficiency is a Glock in 40 S&W. Because friends don’t let friends attend a gunfight with a caliber that doesn’t start with a 4.

While an adherent to the Gospel of JMB, I admit to a venial sin, as my 1911 is a Combat Commander variant being a bit more compact.

I believe that the S&W Shield EZ was designed with women in mind. That easier to use slide spring, and magazine spring are great. I had first suggested the EZ to a lady friend, who got hers in .380. Shooting hers with her, I liked the slide and the easier to load cartridge, and feel that nothing valuable was sacrificed to come up with it. I find it as reliable as any weapon I have handled.

Did the EZ Shield replace the Ladysmith’s

So far, at 11 years younger, my arthritis has not stopped me from racking the slide on my P220, but forget ever being able to use my thumb on the slide release.
We can get up in the caliber wars, but the point of the exercise it to be able to speedily, effectively, and consistently put the freedom seeds where they need to be planted. And with modern ballistics, that 9mm seed will get ‘er done.

I find it interesting the above Mills quote is so often abbreviated, most don’t realize it has been shortened. “War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth a war, is much worse. When a people are used as mere human instruments for firing cannon or thrusting bayonets, in the service and for the selfish purposes of a master, such war degrades a people. A war to protect other human beings against tyrannical injustice; a war to give victory to their own ideas of right and good, and which is their own war, carried on for an honest purpose by their free choice, — is often the means of their regeneration. A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself…

Only Army Mom

(hate the new format) … “As long as justice and injustice have not terminated their ever-renewing fight for ascendancy in the affairs of mankind, human beings must be willing, when need is, to do battle for the one against the other.”

Spot on OAM. One saying that I’ve used (my own) is, “If the politicians had to fight the wars, there would be no wars.” I am an isolationist at heart. I feel that we should defend our own country (borders) and stay away from meddling in others affairs. The US has attempted to defend the world against tyranny, twice, but this whole thing of “Nation Building” or attempting to impose our way of government onto others is a losing proposition. The USA has done more to advance the quality of life for the whole world than anyone else in all of history and we are despised for it. The “elite” of the world want to enslave us all. I am willing to die to keep my freedoms, or they willing to die to take them from me? No “they” are not. “They” are willing to order someone else to die doing so.

Graybeard

Thank you OAM.
Often the full quotes get abbreviated, and the sense lost. It is good to remember the full quotes and the full meanings.

President Elect Toxic Deplorable Racist SAH Neande

Thx OAM. One of those quotes worth copying and keeping to the forefront, like “And how we burned in the camps, later…….” I can’t quote all of it, but I remember enough to find it, and remember the end goal, freedom.

I remember Cesar Chavez from back when he was a good guy and actually did something for people who needed the help.
