Florida deputy kills woman who threatened him with shovel: sheriff

By Joshua Rhett Miller
A Florida deputy fatally shot a woman who threatened to attack him with a shovel, sheriff officials said.

Jessiram Hweih Rivera, 24, died Thursday afternoon at a hospital after being shot by Sgt. Sean Speakman near Redemption Baptist Church, where he located her following a report of a suspicious woman walking in and out of traffic, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

“She was in an obvious state of agitation and she was holding a shovel,” sheriff’s officials said in a statement to The Post.

As Speakman encountered Rivera in a private driveway nearby, she proceeded to “raise the shovel” and point it at the deputy when walking toward him. She then ignored several commands to drop it — prompting the deputy to fire four shots as he backed away, striking her, sheriff officials said.

San Diego County resident fatally shoots intruder during home invasion

A resident grabbed a gun and opened fire on two men taking part in a predawn home-invasion robbery along with four other accomplices in Oceanside today, killing one of them, authorities said.

The shooting in the 300 block of Moonstone Bay Drive, near Libby Lake Park, took place at about 1:15 a.m., according to the Oceanside Police Department.

Patrol officers responding to reports of gunfire arrived to find a 31-year-old suspect mortally wounded in the residence, OPD spokeswoman Jennifer Atenza said. The man, whose name was withheld pending family notification, died at the scene.

Meanwhile, other officers pulled over a suspicious vehicle in the area and detained its five occupants, including a man who had suffered a gunshot wound. Medics took the injured suspect, identified as 29-year-old Deshawn Ingram of Oceanside, to a hospital, where he was admitted in stable condition.

The first one dug her own grave with the shovel.

The second will be making other travel arrangements.

The third group will be in therapy together in prison to mourn their friend.

Anyone who thinks that a shovel isn’t a “lethal weapon”, hasn’t seen me deal with a rabid black lab. Caught in the garden with nothing more than my shovel, I dealt with the situation.
I wonder how many rounds the FBI fired before hitting and stopping the dude.
“Tell me again about limiting my “standard capacity magazines” to 10 rounds.”
I actually like the “10 round” number. I heard the continual wailin’ moanin’ and gnashin’ of teeth over the evil 30 round magazine. I put the “10 round” number with the 30 and began buying 40 round magazines. I like them much better.

Hack Stone

Who was the dude who had the videos showing you how to fight off multiple assailants with an entrenching tool? Hack sure does miss the good old days when the posers went all in on their charade with businesses, training seminars, network interviews all showcasing their talents as Bad Ass Mo-Fo’s.

Claw

That was John “The Duck” Giduck, winner of the 2013 Stolen Valor Tournament, who also taught people to use flaming squirrels as signal flares.

Hack Stone

Hack Stone believes that you are incorrect as to ( see what Hack did there?) the Flaming Squirrel. As any longtime visitor to this distinguished military blog is well aware, the Flaming Squirrel was a survival technique taught by the “former US Navy SEAL” John Stark at The Stunning Agency.

Claw

Yep, you’re right. I was confusing Giduck’s ArchAngel outfit with Stark’s Stunning Agency.

Mea Culpa.

As a side note, the most comprehensive listing (with pictures) of wannabe’s can be found at Blog Entry #30655 (titled Valor Thieves Gallery) and lists all of them from 2019 back to 2011.

Yup, ask anyone who’s defended themselves with a E-tool.

All officers should be required to carry entrenching tools.

Hack Stone

We need common sense legislation to close the Home & Garden Show loophole that allows anyone to buy as many garden tools as they want with zero background checks.

Bringing a shovel to a gun fight. A subset of the “don’t bring a knife…..” category. And just as stoopid.

KoB

Here ya go Wilted Willy. A trifecta of DRTs. That ought to put a 😀 on your face.

Nice shank! “For those who fight unfairly” Is there any other way to fight? I flipped over it. Just like I’d do flips for that lucious little Ms Thang…or any other tricks she had in mind. I’ll be your little game dog. HONEY HUSH!

Never really cared for Butterfly knives per se but have always been a big fan of Benchmade knives..

A bit more on the Jessiram Hweih Rivera story –

A saddening shame she leaves a daughter behind… If only she’d listened.

Bravo-Zulu U.S. Marshal Service – like the RCMP, they ALWAYS get their man…

Many kudos’ to the San Diego County resident who helped to reduce it’s local varmint infestation.

And given to her entirely dedicated and rather steely stance, I’d love to be ‘lil Miss Thang’s ammo carrier ANY DAY.

Don’t upset Ms Thang. You wouldn’t like her when she’s upset. She’d take care of you….quietly (note suppressor)

Grateful for the 2nd amendment today. Involved in a road rage incident – not my fault – that coulda gone bad. Becoming increasingly common and violent in my AO. People are animals.

Where are you (general location), so I know where to stay away from? Or come and rescue you. I’m good with either one.

I’m in fly over country with all of you deplorables. Except some people are actually deplorable.

I don’t think there’s a way stay away or to avoid it. I don’t have numbers, but I’m certain this kind of thing has increased everywhere. Since the start of the COVID panic I have seen a dramatic increase in angry confrontations in everyday places like the grocery store. Over nothing. And not from kids. Adults 30-60ish years old.

Poe, KoB, or another wise regular recently mentioned that he stays strapped at all times. Today was a good reminder why.

If something had gone down Mr. nobunny would have beat the police to the scene, even if I called them first. 😉

If the zombies swarm we’ll need to rescue each other.

KoB

“I don’t have numbers…” Dozens…every.damn.day nobunny. There’s so many that we normally don’t include them on FGS, unless they’re like the sword soi boi from the other day, where the good guy came out ahead. And yep, you’re right, it’s everywhere. Not just on roads, but stores, eating places, sports arenas, any place where people gather. Sadly, most of it is coming from a certain segment of the population, that has an entitlement theory on life. I’d burn up a whole bunch of band width if we ran with that kinda stuff.

Pro tips for the adorable deplorables. Carry…every.where.you.go! And do like the trash do. Travel in packs, ie always have a wingperson/six coverer. BE AWARE…maintain situation awareness. When driving, ALWAYS leave you some space between vehicles, front, rear, side to give you an out. Eyes moving constantly between ahead, sides, and rear. Leave a gap at the stop light of at least 1 car length so you can whip out and around the vehicle in front of you. And keep checking your six for that dumbass drunk that is a ‘fixin’ to slam into your rear like that one did Hatchet. I’m sure you/y’all know most of this and try to practice these good habits. Get out of the practice mode and make all of the above SOP.

And most importantly remember…better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Hatchet

Interesting… I’ve been giving this topic a bit of thought, periodically over the past few days. I mean, now that I’ve got a bit of spare time, I’ve also had some time to do some considering, thinking and strategizing – heath-wise, retirement, state of the woild, etc. Apres pos of spare time – one of the details that has come out of my crash investigation(so far); it was described in the report as indefensible, there was no way I could’ve observed this drunk coming at me as he struck my car obliquely and side-ways – mostly t-boned (luckily not rear-ended as you surmised, KoB. Had that happened, the guys I talked to, said given to his rate of speed, my car probably would’ve cooked off – instead of the resultant fuel-line rupture that caused serious but manageable fuel leakage) and even if I had seen him at the last second, there was no time to react and just no place to go. As KoB correctly points out, our world is on a very uncertain path right now. Here in Canada, there’s no 2A or concealed carry – unless you’re law enforcement – so Jane and Johnny Canuk have to depend on other lawfully Canadian ‘defensive alternatives’ and of course, if so equipped-their wits. Driving habits – I’m in constant defensive mode – my head is always on a swivel, I keep to the speed limit, maintain enough considerate and safe car-lengths, while also basically driving like I’m in huge a smash-up derby, with every dog and their brother out to get me… With the exception of this recent car accident, proud to declare my driving record is completely accident and ticket-free. When I’m out and about walking or on public transit, I also keep my head on a swivel and like to have a tidy assortment of ‘EDC tools’ with me – a few of the decidedly dissuasive and/or offensive kind. And as our KoB correctly and properly preaches – Better to be judged by a jury of twelve of your peers than carried by six of your loved one… Read more »

You right as rain Hatchet, sometimes no matter what you do, or how alert you are, some drunk dumbazz is gonna go out of their way to wreak havoc. Dumb bitch t-boned me 50 years ago after I did everything I could to get away from her. If she’d a stayed in her travel lane it’d been OK. Bent that Mustang like a pretzel, broke the seat belt attachment and threw me to the other side. The seat belt breaking saved my azz. Walked away with a cut from glass and some soreness from being bounced around the passenger side. Having that gap all around, and seeing some fool approaching from the side or rear, has come in handy many times. The person in front of me got rear ended when I was able to move. Buncha saves by making a hard right or left in an intersection when dumbazz goes blowing thru a red light. Millions of miles behind the wheel since that one time and I’ve been real lucky. Better to be lucky than good, Aye?

We’re glad you gonna be OK, kinda sorta, your Rez Pony can be replaced. I, too, carry sharp pointy things for…reasons.

I’ll take a shot of that thar Jameson and a beer chaser. May even sneak one of them death sticks, the Zippo is fueled.

Hatchet

Ouch! You lost your ‘stang in that one? Wow. I would most definitely be as pissed as you were and I’d definitely label that one a major war-pony loss… But yeah, for sure-always better to be lucky than good. And speaking of good-the good news of today is, end of the month, a friend has announced that he’s going to drive me up north to pick out a new Rez Pony from his ever evolving ‘herd’. He’s a rather picky car collector so his offerings will be interesting to say the least. Something to look forward to-most definitely very happy ’bout that!! The not-so great news for today is-Orthopedic Dr’s assessment appt’t this Friday to see what kind of and just how many surgeries my knee is going to need. Was duly warned that this assessment appt’t may take a couple/three of hours. *shrug* In this case, time’s on my side. And while I don’t really care for getting needles or going under a surgeon’s knife, I am most definitely entirely focused on putting all of this behind me by taking whatever means necessary to do so. Man, those Boiler-makers actually gave me a decent night’s sleep. Really like Zippos by the way – ummm, but not enough to scrounge yours! Har..

Hatchet

P.S. watched Red Notice last night – IMDB tt7991608.

THE very last end-credit would’ve made you smile, KoB – ‘Filmed entirely on location in Georgia’!

KoB

Ms Thang Gadot might make me smile, whilst I was making her squeal, but Holly Weird has moved thru Jawja like Sherman’s Retreat to The Sea. Sumbitches are freaking everywhere…and brought their politics with them. Hell, where is Sherman now that we need him? The movers/shakers power brokers made sure that the Fort McPherson Site got BRAC’d so it could be turned over to Holly Weird productions. And they made sure that the whole diversity thing was pushed. Think Tyler Perry and Company.

Buncha Zippos laying around, some of them collectables that are worth real money, but are priceless to me. 50th Anv D-Day? Indy 500?

nobunny…girl EMTs give me a medical conditions like; shortness of breath, heart racing, and some swelling.

nobunny

Then you’re safe, KoB, for I am no longer a paramedic. My career has ceased to be.

KoB

But I LIKE them kinda medical conditions. ‘specially the swelling part! 😛

Plenty of work for EMTs here…Just saying…and not near as cold as flyover country is. Did I make mention that the beaches (Atlantic or Gulf) are only 2-3 hours away…same as the footy hills mountains. 😉

nobunny

Hey, I’m not above being reminded of anything.

A lot of my defensive driving skills came from being an “ambulance driver” and not from combat and bad ass strategery. 😉

Either way, people are trying to kill you.

Basic ambulance rule: Leave space between your ambulance and the vehicle in front so you can get out and get to a call. In POV it just became “so you can get TF out.”

Pretty quickly on the job you see rear-end crash fatalities from the forces of the crash or, as Hatchet mentioned, fire. You also have to be aware that people stare at the emergency vehicle’s pretty blinky lights and will rear end or side swipe the scene.

So, add basic ambulance/POV rule “watch your rearview mirror” to “leave space so you can get TF out” and you’re mentally ahead of most people on the road.

Hatchet

Yeah, my driving instructor espoused the very same as yourself, nobunny. I constantly laud and credit him -completely insane Aussie that he was- for teaching me what he knew and to this day; for keeping my meat-bag in one piece. Cheers to you and every EMT like you.

nobunny

Oh and to add on to my rules obtained on the job:

I still clear every intersection, even if I have the green light, and proceed very carefully with stop signs. Given our angry society I assume that people are going to disregard all social norms, including traffic laws. In the last few months this has prevented several accidents. I nag – yes, nag – Mr. nobunny to remember, too.

(Not like yours Hatchet. Yours involved an awful form of POS, not just someone who doesn’t feel like stopping at a stop sign.)
