City of Austin cancels Veterans Day parade due to COVID

| November 10, 2021

No, this isn’t an article from a year ago accidentally published only now. It’s 2021 and, despite the State of Texas having been fully open for business for ages, the City of Austin’s restrictive COVID policies forces the cancellation of the Veterans Day parade originally scheduled for tomorrow.

Residents of the city that is the state capitol and whose unofficial motto is “Keep Austin weird” pointed out some of the ironies. For example, Fox reports them noting;

Q2 Stadium, where Austin FC plays its home games, seats more than 20,000 fans and has been operating at 100% capacity this season.

Parade organizers were expecting the outdoor event to receive 30,000 attendees. Fox has the rest of the report;

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has invited military veterans in Austin, Texas to gather at the state capitol building after their Veterans Day parade was cancelled due to the city’s coronavirus restrictions.

“The City of Austin’s overreaching COVID requirements have forced the Austin Veterans Parade Foundation to cancel their annual event,” the Republican governor tweeted Tuesday. “I’m inviting them to host a rally on the south steps of the Texas State Capitol. We celebrate our nation’s heroes in Texas.”

“This is something that we could not do as we anticipated some 30,000 attendees to the parade,” the parade organizers said in a statement. “We are hopeful that in 2022, the restrictions on public gatherings will be back to normal. In lue of the parade, we are working with the City of Austin and the Austin Veterans Commission to dedicate the Veterans Park on Nov. 11th.”

The parade organizers later announced that they have “respectfully declined” Abbott’s invitation and noted that they have already committed to an event dedicating Veterans Pocket Park in Austin at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, according to Fox 7 Austin.

In the title of your post, you misspelled “City of Asshole” .

Blue State sh*thole in the heart of Texas…

Only two things come from Texas, Pvt. Cowboy.

I have ONE horn!

I had to do a lot of PUs for that comment in BCT at FT Benning in 1987!

Airborne Son’s Navy buddy was stationed in San Diego for a while.
He was pulled over by a state trooper, who noted his driver’s license and said:
“I hear that the only things to come out of Texas are steers and queers.”
To which the young Chief replied:
“They say California is the land of fruits and nuts. Is this a come-on, sir?”
The Trooper, laughing, replied:
“Well played, Mr. Well played.” – and let him go.

Reagan came from California. So they can’t be ALL bad. IJS

Um, our Squid Admin seems overly fond of that Jarhead witticism. However the folks at Lone Star, the “National Beer of Texas” would like him to know that the reality is that it’s actually “Steers and Beers”!

That is heartily seconded by the folks at Shiner Bock, a brewing masterpiece from Texas’ large Czech population, whose inimitable motto is:

“Our beer goes through 50,000 Czechs every day.”

Small correction, while the brewing association was composed of German and Czech immigrants, the recipe is a Bavarian lentenbock and the original brewer who started them off was German. (However, Czech dark beers are wonderful. Not Irish, but extremely good.)

I love Shiner Bock

Personal freedoms…the very Heart of Texas Independence. The Spirits of the Alamo and Goliad weep.

Lot of trolls and Vet Haters in the comments of this article.

Wonder if Stephan Austin has asked Ol’ Saint Pete if he can change his name?

Stayed at the Austin Hilton back in 2010 for the National Hurricane Conference and I didn’t see one person with a cowboy hat or boots, just college kids with skin whiter than mine wearing black tattoos. Brisket was great with the toast. Your right: WEIRD.

Hell, this USED to be Austin:

Funny how they don’t cancel Texas University foosball games with 100k in the stands because of the COVID…. hmmmm?

The tu folks are of the proper religion.

Austin has been weird for a half century. Back in 1967 when young SSGT Poe ETS’d at Ft. Bragg to return to West Texas to go back to college on the GI Bill, newly reinstated for Vietnam vets, his brilliant, but worthless, hippie/radical, brother-in-law, a perennial student at UT Austin, was quite proud of the fact that the city, even then, was famed for its weirdness. “Keep Austin Weird” bumper stickers and T-shirts were already on widespread display back in those days.

Admittedly, with each passing year it has gotten weirder, to the point of being toxic…

Maybe what is needed is bumper stickers that say ” keep the weirdos in austin”?

There were also two long weekends of Austin City Limits Festival at Zilker park a month ago, and of course the Formula 1 race last month.

Austin is, sadly, in the grips of the commies for now.

If I had to go there, you bet I’d be packing and have some “spares” at hand.

Wall it off.
Nuke it from orbit.

2022 is going to be awful anywhere that is any shade of red. And I meant Red.

You’re not queer if you’re doing the pushing.

Bullshit. Doesn’t matter if you’re pitching or catching, you’re still playing with bats and balls.

Yeah, but let a crowd of foo-foos wanting to do a “pride parade” in and see just how quickly the Austin Authorities approve it…

Austin City Limits on PBS was a favorite show for years
until I became aware of the political leanings there.
Put a damper on the music for sure.

“If you want to end war and stuff you gotta sing loud”
(woodstock quote)

“New York State Thruway is closed, maaan! …”

The Commissariat in Austin did the correct thing in canceling the parade… it’s to protect all of us from teh COVID!

AW1 Rod

There were no COVID concerns back in May, when the Commies paraded through Austin waving flags and carrying images of Marx, Lenin and Stalin.

I would expect nothing less from that shithole city.

Old tanker

The city of austin is a disgrace to the rest of Texas. I live less than 2 hours away but refuse to visit or patronize any business from there. They voted for that crap and those idiot politicians. They are still trying to remove their Police in the face of rising crime from when they reduced the Department.

Gov. Abbott to veterans: “Y’all come on over to my house.”

No Parades in Ausiin but In Palm Beach County, Fl, WFTL AM (amplitude modulation) radio this morning mentioned parades in the area. I could see liberal Austin not having a parade since most likely they hate the Mil and the Chi Com virus was an excuse not to have one. Have they had them in the past.?????????
