Happy Birthday, Navy!
A 13 October 1775 resolution of the Continental Congress established what is now the United States Navy with “a swift sailing vessel, to carry ten carriage guns, and a proportionable number of swivels, with eighty men, be fitted, with all possible despatch, for a cruise of three months….” After the American War of Independence, the U.S. Constitution empowered the new Congress “to provide and maintain a navy.” Acting on this authority, Congress established the Department of the Navy on 30 April 1798.
In 1972, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt authorized official recognition of 13 October as the birthday of the U.S. Navy. Since then, each CNO has encouraged a Navy-wide celebration of this occasion “to enhance a greater appreciation of our Navy heritage, and to provide a positive influence toward pride and professionalism in the naval service.”
Happy 246th, Navy. Heavy seas ahead.

Happy Birthday to all my Navy brothers and sisters here. Way to go NAVY for 246 years!
The anniversary of the Naval Act of 1794 would be a better day to do this. The Continental/Confederation Navy, which was founded in 1775, ceased to exist after the war. It, and the US Navy which exists today, are two different navies created by two different governments.
All the armed services ceased to exist except in a very small cadre status after the Revolution ended though.

An example of men, doing manly things…with other men…aboard the Raging Queen? Oh well, they’re not at the pier so it’s not…and they’re under way…(ducks thrown belaying pins)
“…encouraged a Navy wide celebration…” As if Navy ever need encouragement to celebrate. The Navy better celebrate now ’cause they won’t have any reason to celebrate come December. Go Army and all that!
Happy Birthday to the Members of the Floating Artillery Platforms Service.

Happy Birthday, Navy!
Anchors Aweigh and happy birthday.
As an old grunt who now enjoys sailing from April to October on the Long Island Sound and the coastal Atlantic Ocean, I have to say I have a far better appreciation for what Navy does than I used to….
Getting caught in six foot waves with 20knot winds in a 30 foot sailboat is an entertaining way to spend a day…having the engine quit and relying solely on the sails to make it the rest of the trip was an adventure the wife and I will not soon forget…
Hats off to those who chose to spend their careers on the vastness of the world’s oceans and seas…
Joined the Navy (74-80) at 17 to “see the world”.
Turned 18 in boot camp (told NO ONE) and when I finally became a “Fleet Sailor” (after “A” school (Lakehurst) and a 15 month assignment to Brewer Field (GUAM)) ….found out that MOST of the world was covered with water.
Saw a WHOLE lot of THAT for 2+ years from the flight deck of the Constellation (V-1 C&S).
Wouldn’t trade it for the “world” (got enough water thank you).
GO NAVY !!! BEAT…..SOMEBODY ELSE !!!
My first Navy Birthday NOT in-service after over 20 years… Just feels weird I guess though I see new adventures on the horizon!
