Gun-Sniffing Dog Snitches on Concealed Carriers in Houston Malls

By Jeremy S.
Okay, okay, “snitches” is a little strong. I’m sure Maki is a good boy. He’s just doing what he was trained to do, which is to sniff out concealed firearms on customers in five Houston shopping malls.

“Concealed means concealed” unless, apparently, you’re patronizing the following Brookfield Properties’ malls: Baybrook, Deerbrook, First Colony, Willowbrook, and The Woodlands. Here in Texas, an establishment can post a 30.06 “no guns allowed” sign, violation of which is a Class A misdemeanor.

To enforce their policy, Brookfield Properties is employing Maki and his security guard handler, Paul Blart, to sniff the shoppers (“pull a Biden”) and alert on any who may be armed with more than mom’s credit card, a keen fashion sense, and a taste for Auntie Anne’s pretzels.

I for one feel safer that Maki and Paul Blart are on the job. Thanks to Poetrooper for the link and the humor. And you thought I wouldn’t post this.

I suppose that the sniffy pooch is a good idea in some places but I would decline to shop or enter upon premises that restrict my own security requirements.

I hope that the first person given a “misdemeanor” ticket thanks to Maki also sues the Brookfield Properties for invasion of privacy! This is along the lines of putting cameras in the changing rooms and toilets.
By entering their establishment I do not give up my 4th Amendment Rights. If they decide to frisk everyone that enters the mall it would be no different!

I’d love to pull a “got’cha” on Paul & pooch with a little bit of misdirection. I carry regularly, so whatever the dog detects on (metal? gun oil? gunpowder?) has left traces. Remove gun, and doggie would still hit on me. Then show empty pockets and cry “foul” on the mall management.

Awful photo. Looks like some poor soldier dropped it in battle
while fumbling with a fresh clip.

Sgt K

Yep, just doesn’t look right, laying on the ground like that.

Hack Stone

The armed robber thought the delivery guy would fall like a domino, but he’s the one who ended up with the Tombstone.

Graybeard

Ha!

Wonder how good MaKi is at sniffing out firearms that are underwater? Can he wear and or sniff thru SCUBA gear? I may have work for that Good Boy. /s/

Served with an old MSG and FIRST (ht 2 Bim) Sgt (both 3 war Vets) that still carried the M1. Either could knock the gnuts off of a gnat at 300+ yards. Remember back yonder when surplus M1s were cheap? Pepper Ridge Farms remembers.

Roh-Dog

I gsee gwhat gyou gdid gthere. Well done!
The M1 is one of those rifles for me, love every little bit of them, respect them greatly, but could never own one cuz it’d be like defiling history putting her to work.

The local Marine Corps League drew some from CMP for rifle salutes. We used them for Memorial Day honors but I can’t get the leadership to lemme clean ’em. My Infantry twitchin’ over uncleaned gats still is 100.

(Re CMP rifles for VSOs: please get on this. Like all GOV programs if this goes unused it may get cut.

Claw

That Arms Room your unit had at Camp Pieri must have been a bitch to do come monthly inventory time, what with so many non-standard, unauthorized/no longer being issued weapons being maintained there./smile

Lot’s of wink, wink, nod, nod, I don’t see nothing going on back then Claw. I’m sure you NEVER saw anything like that go on. Every Supply Daddy/Motor Pool/S-4/Mess Sgt kept meticulous, accurate, up to date records on EVERYTHING that may and/or may not be authorized to have and/or may not have…on or off post/post housing/on the economy separate quarters. We won’t even mention the dark corners of the underground shops there that nobody was supposed to know about/enter/use. Be surprised what you could still get with an orphaned ration card for Class VI Supplies…or a carton of US Smokes. And NO Soldier ever abused their ration card privileges…EVAH. We passed every IG inspection that came along.

I admit nothin’! Call my lawer.

Not sure what good boy Maki is alerting on, but it might be worthwhile to do some testing, carry a couple live rounds in the pocket, or some once fired brass.

Long ago in a galaxy far far away I was stationed at Langley AFB. It was sometimes more convenient to cut through the Base entering at the West gate and exiting at either Lasalle or King Street gates when running errands around town. One Saturday morning I got hit with a random vehicle search when exitting the Base. This was a week after I’d been to an outdoor range near Virginia Beach. Upon opening the trunk a range bag with a couple 100 spent brass cases was lying open in the trunk. This invited the question on whether I had any weapons in the car. After much thought I replied that I didn’t think so. They searched a bit more in depth and found none. I was good about removing my weapons and cleaning them on shooting days nots so good at hauling all my detritus from such trips to my apartment or the trash afterwards.

And how does the USMC’s elimination of the Military Police MOS (see https://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htamph/articles/20210607.aspx) affect the DOD climate change strategy?

We carried the Garand, M-1 Carbine, BAR, Thompson Sub gun, .45 auto and Browning 30’s and 50’s while I was aboard The Okie 3. Most on the site have heard me tell about my M-1 thumb. Could kick myself now for turning down a free Garand from a co worker/friend that collected and did work on them.

Follow up to Pizza story, perp had extensive criminal record and had served 15 years for armed robbery. Surprised? Nah, didn’t think so.
