500 TCF of NatGas in the Med…

Eisenhower (CVN 69) in the Mediterranean Sea, March 7, 2020. (Sawyer Haskins/U.S. Navy photo)

500 trillion cubic feet of natural gas is buried in fields in the Med: who knew? And we thought it was just about shipping stuff from one end of the Mediterranean basin to the other. We still have our base at Sigonella, where Etna has been throwing a fit lately.

https://www.military.com/daily-news/opinions/2021/04/16/geopolitics-of-mediterranean-natural-gas.html

Israel, Egypt and Cyprus all have gas extraction operations going on now in the Med, with a combined total of 80 trillion cubic feet (80 TCF) involved, but the total best estimate for the Mediterranean basin is far higher at 500 TCF. Think about that for a minute: that’s enough natural gas to keep Europe and the North American continent lit and heated and cooking for nearly eternity, never mind other markets. China? They have their own gas and oil fields, thank you, and are exporting oil and gas to Australia and other destinations. They also have their own coal fields and use that commodity to run electric power generating plants. And, no, they don’t care what the ecohippies think or say.

There is the potential for some real prosperity for countries like Egypt and Cyprus. Even Turkey can benefit from this at some point, although currently, most of its petroleum comes by pipelines from Russia and Central Asia.

From the article: The Leviathan and Tamir discoveries have transformed Israel from a net importer of hydrocarbons to a net exporter. Likewise, the Zohr field, when fully developed, will also make Egypt a net exporter of gas. The Levantine gas discoveries have also led to a close working relationship and a pronounced warming of Israel’s relations with Greece and Cyprus. Historically, both of those countries tended to side with the Palestinian Authority and often had frictions with the Israeli government.

For Jerusalem, the export of Israeli gas to its neighbors and its potential involvement in gas exploration elsewhere in the Mediterranean could give it significant diplomatic leverage and lead to an improvement in its relations with many of its Mediterranean neighbors, as well as export access to markets in the Middle East and North Africa region.

Major gas discoveries in their respective portions of the Levantine Basin also could revitalize failed states like Lebanon and Syria. Alternatively, the prospect of a massive hydrocarbon windfall could also catalyze sectarian violence there. – article

While this may make the ecohippies and Greennuts wail and weep, the one thing that gas and petroleum have brought to this planet is low-cost resources for heating and cooking, never mind the byproducts made from the resulting goo that is produced when refining crude oil.  While the current administration has its head stuck up the backsides of the so-called ‘climate movement’ puppets (including Kerry), which wants the world to stop using such things as wood, gas, oil and coal for heating, cooking and producing electricity, this stuff is not going away.

Once the combustible portion of the hydrocarbon molecule is refined into fuel, e.g., cooking/heating gas, gasoline at the pump, etc., the leftover materials are converted into synthetic materials and products that we all take for granted, e.g., plastic storage containers. What? Not the best example? Okay, then the insulation in your winter jacket and the paint on your house are but a few examples. Plastic is a processed hydrocarbon molecule, nothing else, and can be recycled into other products, like roofing materials or those lovely soft seat covers in your car. I have four lovely warm blankets, three of which now belong to my cat, and they are all made of polyester fuzz, which is a petroleum derivative byproduct.

These natural resources will make countries which own them well off enough that some absurd antagonisms may perhaps die away, although the most absurd countries I can come up with right now are Canada (because Trudeau wants everyone to stop using carbon-based fuels) and the UK (becuase Boris’s hippie girlfriend is really, really good at convincing him that anything petroleum-based is poison).

This isn’t going away, and the fact that the Mediterranean basin is this widely-laced with gas deposits is good news. Maybe some day, we’ll have real peace of some kind.

Read the entire article. It is worth your time, so much so that when the “earth first” people try to pick a fight over staying warm or living in a cave, having this kind of info available is a big help to stop their arguments. Just tell them to give up their phones and tablets, which are all made of petroleum-based synthetics, and wait for them to start crying.

Well, I’m not saying anything that anyone here doesn’t already know but, the leftist’s dildos (dildoes? yes, sp) are generally made of petroleum based plastics so where would the eco-hippies be without that? Organics, OK then, carrots, cucumbers (pickles), zucchini, eggplants, corn, bananas, long peppers and radishes…
You get me drift. As long as you don’t invite me over for salad for dinner. No Go. Meat please.

Just think of how many extra trees and extra crops will grow from all that CO2.

Heh.

WE MUST FREE the innocent hydrocarbons imprisoned deep in the Earth, DRILL, DRILL, DRILL!!!
I remember seeing a picture some years ago of some eco-kooks rowing their kayaks out to protest against drilling, they drove out there in cars and vans as well as paddling around in plastic kayaks MADE FROM crude oil derivatives. well, we all know that being mentally impaired is a requirement for being liberal!

Poetrooper

Speaking of mental impairment in libs:

We’ve all known this for a long time but this is the first thing I’ve seen substantiating it…

Surprise, surprise, Sgt. Carter! Who knew that 50% of female Progs are mentally ill. Maybe it has something to do with the concept that believing a great deal of crazy bullshit (like a certain male? Prog who posts here) makes one crazy.

Could also explain their inordinate fears of such things as guns, fossil fuels, Covid-19, climate change and white terrorism while being totally oblivious to such real concerns as rampant criminality, concentration of power in a totalitarian central government, an underfunded, feminized military, confiscatory taxes and uncontrolled immigration.

As stated in the article, much of their behavior mimics that of Borderline Personality Disorder, a recognized mental illness:

John Kerry has been up to his old tricks of divulging top secret information to enemies of the US. No time for climate change.

Once a traitor, always a traitor. This should make the Israelis want to consult the JoeBama regime in advance of any planned actions. /sarc

Poetrooper

Ol’ Poe rather suspects it’s been a long, long time, say back to 2008, since a Democrat administration has gotten any fully-accurate, unsanitized intelligence from Israel.

And you can bet they have every word of Kerry’s treachery recorded for posterity.

Canada isn’t that ‘against’, they are putting pressure on the US to keep a pipeline open that Gov. Witless of MI wants to shut down.

This is Biden just helping our allies again. /s/

I wonder if Biden isn’t taking kickbacks from OPEC Countries to make us dependent on foreign oil again?

Everyone already knows what Joe is; it is only a question of his price.

UpNorth

Well, she wants to shut down Line 5 because the folks in the U.P., Canada, Northern Wisconsin and Minnesota don’t need affordable energy. They can pay for it by truck load or railcar load.

That picture reminds me of the “good old days” when we Unrep-ed The Nimitz and her battlegroup about 200 times during a Med Cruise in ’85 &’87. Heading in and out of Augusta Bay on AOR-6 (The K-Zoo)…ah, the memories come flooding back.

The only question I would have is what is the percentage of Natural Gas Liquids (propane, butane and the like) that is in this gas. As a former alt fuels guy, high percentages of NGLs causes major engine problems if the methane content is less than 90%. You have to have lots of filters. It also affects burner units. You can fix it, but it does cost money to do so. Best way is to make the gas into LNG (liquid natural gas) which drops all the NGLs out for use in other products. Makes it easier to ship as well and when it gets to destination, you just heat it a bit (like room temp) and put it in the pipeline..

Wow, just imagine. A country going from a net importer of petroleum products to a net exporter of petroleum products.

Anybody else remember a Country that here very recently started going from a net exporter to a net importer of petroleum products? I’ll bet that Pepperidge Farms Remembers.

Oil peak!

I mean, Gas Peak!

Libturds gotta fart.

Well, since we got wind that you broke the subject…

Methane is also a very easy to make biofuel. Thus a methane/NG fuel system has an easy time adapting to a “renewable”. A whole bunch of “biomass” related waste could become feedstock for methane production. The difficulty arises from the current low price of natural gas. Easier to track and extract than bio-convert it.
