Somalia…. Nothing Has Changed

Somalia…. Mogadishu…. Weren’t we there once, on some kind of mission that backfired, a while back? And nothing has really changed since we left.

The attacks in the early hours of Saturday, around 4 a.m. local time, targeted military bases in the towns of Barire and Awdhegle in southern Somalia. The forward operating bases are manned by the Somali military to protect several bridges along the Shabelle river that authorities say are key to keeping vehicles carrying explosives from entering Mogadishu. Attacks started off with suicide car bombs on both bases, followed by infantry attack, regional officials said. – article
I will not take bets on how long it will be before we’re lining up to send our own over there on a useless mission that fixes nothing and ends in unneeded tragedy.

Here’s a thought…send in a true leader that missed her turn and has experience operating under sniper fire. What a difference that would make. Carry along a former Navy fellow, in a swift boat, that can deal with the pirates. He can take along a folk singer whose music would soothe the savage beast. Why not throw in DaNang Viet of the Nam Times Marine? The children might like some toys. A militia made up of ex-patriates from there, lead by a Kongress Kritter who really knows how to show “Brotherly Love”, could go a long way. Make sure they pack in plenty of Ham n Muthers for rations.

My orders to Pax River couldn’t have come at a better time. I got out of Lewiston just before the Catholic Charities started importing all the Sammie trash that now has Lewiston (and Portland, while we’re at it) looking like a fucking Mogadishu slum.
Heck, I had trouble finding the damn river, much less those two “strategic” towns. It’s a good thing those terrorists haven’t figured out how to cross the river someplace else or even build a car-bomb on the other side of the river.

On a happier note, Somali pirates seem to have decided to find a new line of work. The Russians in the video may have provided some impetus for the sea change.
They looked like “Mostly” peaceful pirates…

My understanding is they don’t necessarily concentrate in the Gulf of Aden anymore, but have spread out and now merchies keep the private security on board all the way to the west coast of India.
We picked up ours in Malta, kept them from Port Said all the way through our Africa/Persian Gulf/India run and back, letting them off in Malta again.
