Gun sales ‘don’t fit the caricature’ of the typical gun owner: Gun store spokesman

Over 21M gun background checks conducted in 2020.  Analysts estimate there were 8.4M first-time gun buyers in 2020

By Stephanie Pagones
More than 21 million gun background checks were conducted in 2020 – up 60% from 2019 and over 34% from the previous record set in 2016 – with nearly 23 million firearms sold last year, experts and trade groups said Tuesday.

Last year was a record-smashing year for gun sales, with nearly 23 million units purchased, according to data compiled by Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting (SAAF). Meanwhile, the FBI conducted 21,083,643 firearm background checks over the course of 2020, compared to the 15,700,471 checks done in 2016, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) said in a press release.

8 million new gun owners times a coupla boxes, say an average of 100 rounds, each… that’s an ADDITIONAL 800,000,000 rounds added to normal demand. And you wonder why you can’t find 9mm ammo.

I live in deepest Red State-land where they think you’re strange if you don’t own at least three guns and there’ve been no (repeat NO) guns or ammo available (despite greatly increased production) here since the virus-o-rama started in March. Let that (see post above) sink in.

Went to the gun show here last month. Line down the block, massive buying– like locusts hit the place after day 1 of 2.

All that ammo hoarded during the Obama years must have been
used up by now. Nobody would have paid .42 per round and just
let it sit there for 4-8 years only to see it at twice that now.
Nah, nobody would have done that.
The problem now is 12 GA OO and slugs. Looks like the recent
popularity in Turkey hunting is draining the supply.
People gotta eat.

If you can’t get Buck, Turkey or Goose loads can be useful, the larger the shot the better.

If you want substitute buck for reloads, check the blackpowder shelves or sites. Lead balls sold for .32s or .36s work. Dead soft lead, so moderate velocity works best.

I used to use #2 bird years ago in the HD shotgun years ago when we had kids in the house. It’s devastating at indoor distances and loses tons of energy going through a single wall. It normally won’t go through two interior walls.

But these days I use a suppressed AR as it is so much better and I don’t have to worry about where the kids are.

That latter item is a valid solution.

Please review “box of truth” web site for practical testing of birdshot versus drywall.

It all goes through two spaced sheets with enough to wound or kill on the other side. Even #9 will.

Not as bad as a 45-70, no. (Grin)

They shoot stuff, with enough details to be reproducible. Great fun reference site. I highly recommend it.

I horded ammo in the Clinton years also.
Moving day almost killed me.

You underestimate how much some people bought in 2006-7. Also when Walmart exited the “Assault [OMFG cover the children’s ears] Rifle” ammo market there were deals to be had by forward thinking people.

All the places around Casa de Sparky are fresh out of 5.56, .308, .45 (LC and ACP), .410, and damn little of much else except one place that for whatever reason had a shitload of 6.5 Creedmoor.

Don’t even ask about Kittery. The gun shelves were almost bare, to say nothing of ammo.

That used Remington model 513 looks nice, very nice. But that inventory is naked.

Got primers?

26Limabeans

Yeah, but I need the little box with the spring lever.

The real money would have been made in boat repair kits. Think how many firearms would not of had to be replaced if there weren’t so many leaky boats, launched over flooded quicksand lakes…during a tornacane…while ice fishing.

Were you watching me, KoB?

And the gun industry gives a hearty thanks to it’s salesmen of the year – ANTIFA.
I’m wondering if the management at Dicks Sporting Goods is regretting it’s decision to not carry “military style rifles” in an attempt to appease the left.

I used to reload back in the 1970’s into the early 80’s using a CH multi progressive press with a aluminum platen. Problem was switching over from .38’s to .45 ammo, the machine had to be adjusted to use each primer holder. My Fingers were always covered with a smear of lead and using Bullseye powder left my shooting hand dirty. Using a rock cleaning drum loaded with corn cob media left some of it in the case so when I was shooting at the range, sparks from the media would shoot out of the barrel. Cheaper having it UPS delivered to my friends School district shop where he was the districts Foreman and divvy it up. His boss wanted to set up a small reloading room in the building but my friend said that wouldn’t go over with the district. UPS eventually raised the shipping rates on ammo so we stopped ordering by mail/phone.

I’m sorry guys.
I’ll admit it.
It was me.
I bought “a” gun in 2020.
I apologize.

Looks like the great unraveling will be going down sooner than later. Mostly peaceful protests at the US Capitol seems to have caused congress to beat feet.

And folks thought 2020 was “operation enduring clusterfuck” …

2021 said “hold my eggnog…”

You live urban, right? Stay safe and watch your 6. This may get … interesting.
