Trailblazing country music legend Charley Pride dies at 86
The cause was complications from COVID-19

Country music legend Charley Pride, who amassed more than 50 top-10 hits between 1967 and 1987, and won several Grammy Awards, has died. He was 86.
The cause was complications from COVID-19, his publicist said in a statement.
Country music’s first Black superstar’s biggest songs included “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’,” and “Mountain of Love,” and 29 of his 52 top-10 hits rose to No. 1. He won multiple Country Music Awards. And in 1993, he was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry, although he maintained that he’d had an open invitation there since his first performance in 1967.
“I’m so heartbroken that one of my dearest and oldest friends, Charley Pride, has passed away,” fellow country legend Dolly Parton wrote on Twitter Saturday. “It’s even worse to know that he passed away from COVID-19. What a horrible, horrible virus.”

Godspeed and Fare Well to you Good Sir. One of our all time favorites…and a damn fine person. Mama loved her some Charley Pride, had all his albums and went to his concerts when it wasn’t the “proper thing for a white widowed woman” to do. Had the Honor to meet him several times, backstage when I would escort her to the shows.
You can bet Mama was part of the Fan Club that met Charley when he started kissing all those Angels Good Morning.
Well, he’ll still be singing even when he’s not in our range of hearing, y’know.
Such a great big baritone voice and talent. Quite a ball player, too. Charley made life a better place,
RIP, Mr. Pride. Your talent was enjoyed by many and will be missed.
I met Charlie at KSCS FM 96.3 in Fort Worth back in the late 80s when I was an Air Force recruiter. I was chatting with the Public Server Director when the DJ called from the booth and asked if we wanted to meet Charlie Pride. We walked in, and there he stood, all 6’1″ inches of him. He smiled and gave me big ol’ handshake–at which point I flinched. It seems Charlie had one hell of a grip!
A little more Charlie:

Live version with Marty Stuart’s studio band, pretty fine version if you ask me.
Don’t forget: Army vet!
Friend of mine, a black guy, was stationed somewhere down south at a minor base – apparently black entertainment was really limited. So when he heard a BROTHER was headlining a show, he and a couple of his buddies bought front row seats. Day comes, they get their hair picked out into the best ‘fros the Air Force allowed, put on some serious pimp threads…sitting down front and proud: and out walks Charley Pride. (Did say despite the country bent, Charlie put on a great show.)
Commies couldn’t get when he served.
Commies couldn’t get him at his peak.
Commies had to wait until he was old and frail before they had enough to get him.
Rest in Peace Charlie, you did some fine music.
I saw Charlie, and many other country greats when they played at the local auditorium/stadium. They always wanted uniformed officers to work the events. The country shows were great, the biggest issue was usually some gal who forgot how to find her seat after having one too many.
Charlie was great, so was Ronnie Milsap and a couple of others, they all did their whole show as a sound check prior to the doors opening. We got to listen to the whole show uninterrupted. And got paid time-and-a-half for being there.
“Burgers and fries and cherry pies”.
Thank you, Sir.
