The NFL… And AWAAAY We Go!

| September 17, 2020

We posted recently about the NFL wading into the political controversy surrounding people killed by police.  My premise was that it was a slippery slope.  You are handing control over someone’s stance, or perceived lack thereof, to outside forces and it can only go badly.

One case was with Pittsburgh offensive tackle Al Villanueva, who chose to wear the name of Army Sgt 1st Class Alwyn Cashe’s name on his helmet.   This was a departure from the rest of his teammates, who elected to wear the name “Antwon Rose Jr.” who was killed in Pittsburg.

Although not on the “Approved List,” Villanueva felt strongly about wearing Cashe’s name and now he is paying the price.  He cleared this move with Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin and Tomlin supported Villanueva’s right to individual expression.

Villanueva graduated from West Point and was an Army Ranger who was awarded a Bronze Star from actions in Afghanistan.

Al Villanueva’s helmet change catches Pittsburgh Steelers teammates by surprise

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers chose to wear the name of Antwon Rose Jr., a Black teenager killed by East Pittsburgh police in 2018, on the backs of their helmets for the entire 2020 season — but one player had a different name on his helmet Monday night, which came as a surprise to some teammates.

Offensive lineman Al Villanueva changed the name on his helmet to that of Army Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe, a Black soldier who was killed on duty in Iraq and was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for heroism.

Then, Antwon Rose Jr’s mother weighed in…

“I’m going to use this negative press and negativity to motivate me to hold the Pittsburgh Steelers even more accountable!!! Yes I believe in second chances but as we all know I believe in putting in the work and that’s how I base my collaborations. They came to me as a team/organization and I don’t care how good of an individual you are; if you are not a TEAM player then maybe you are playing for the wrong team!!!”

To be honest, I did not know the story of Antwon Rose Jr and looked it up.  Perhaps wearing the name served its purpose with me in that I read up on it and he has not been forgotten.  Rose sounds like he was in the wrong place at the wrong time but happened to run with a bad crowd – at least on the day of his death.  He fled from the scene of an arrest and was shot by a police officer.  I don’t know much beyond that as far as his innocence or potential guilt – but I’m not here to litigate individuals cases.

Then, we have the case of Miami Dolphin’s safety Eric Rowe who chose to wear the name of slain Texas soldier Vanessa Guillen.

NFL player will wear Vanessa Guillen’s name on helmet for Sunday’s game

One NFL player is honoring the legacy of slain Texas soldier Vanessa Guillen both on and off the field.

Miami Dolphins’ safety Eric Rowe will wear Guillen’s name on his helmet during Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots.

The football team posted the announcement on Twitter Sunday, Sept. 13.

Guillen, 20, was an Army specialist stationed at Fort Hood who disappeared in April.

Finally, we have the case of Jacksonville Jaguars’ tight end Tyler Eifert who chose to wear the name of fallen retired St. Louis police officer David Dorn.

NFL player honors David Dorn on his helmet

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (KMOV.com) – Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Tyler Eifert honored fallen St. Louis police officer David Dorn by wearing his name on the back of his helmet for Sunday’s season-opening game.

Dorn’s name was on the list of approved names that can be worn.

List of approved names for placement on helmet bumper includes David Dorn

In addition to specific names, players may place the following phrases on their helmet bumpers: It Takes All of Us, End Racism, Stop Hate, Black Lives Matter.

This is the current list of approved names for placement on the player helmet bumpers, as provided by the NFL to PFT: Ahmaud Arbery, Althea Bernstein, La’Vante Biggs, Jacob Blake, Emantic “EJ” Bradford, Rayshard Brooks, Kalief Browder, Jim Brown, Michael Brown, Dennis “Ballie” Browning Jr., Miriam Carey, Philando Castile, William L. Champman II, Kenneth Clark Sr., Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, John Crawford III, Tymar Crawford, Emerson Crayton, Jordan Davis, Amadou Diallo, David Dorn, Manuel Ellis, Curtis Flowers, George Floyd, Janisha Fonville, Cornelius Fredericks, Eric Garner, Tank Goodman, Oscar Grant, Freddie Gray, Ronald Greene, Vanessa Guillén, Akai Gurley, DJ Henry, Botham Jean, Atatiana Jefferson, Dion Johnson, Jamee Johnson, Joshua Johnson, Kendrick Johnson, Bettie Jones, Corey Jones, Julius Jones, India Kager, Rodney King, Cameron Lamb, John Lewis, Shaheen Mackey, Marcus Malone, Trayvon Martin, Elijah McClain, Markeis McGlockton, Lyric McHenry, Davon McNeal, Marion Motley, Dante Parker, Fritz Pollard, Dreasjon Reed, Kevin Richardson, Jemel Roberson, Craig Rodgers, Deravis Caine Rogers, Antwon Rose Jr., Aura Rosser, Charles Roundtree, Jon Russell, Yusef Salaam, John Sanders, Raymond Santana, Antronie Scott, Walter Scott, James Scurlock, Sha-Asia Semple, Yvette Smith, Jason St. Julien, Eurie Stamps Sr., Aiyana Stanley-Jones, Alton Sterling, Enosa “EJ” Strickland, Willie Sturgis Jr., Darius Tarver, Breonna Taylor, Christian Taylor, Emmett Till, Denmark Vesey, Taiesha Watkins, and Alteria Woods.

The individual NFL player’s choice of names drives the question of what does BLM actually stand for and mean?  Since there is some degree of subject of interpretation, my contention is that it makes it ripe for angry and heated debate, similar to the non-specific meaning in the act of kneeling for the national anthem.

Then, of course, the name choice is open for criticism.  Rose’s mother framed it as Villanueva viewed it that her son did not deserve to be honored.  Villanueva may not have felt that way, but instead felt that Chase’s name should also be included in the vein of (All) Black Lives Matter but this is only a guess on my part.

So, to whomever thought that this would not be problematic… AWAAaay we go!

Fuck the NFL.

Cashe ran towards fallen comrade.

The other clown ran away.

Mason

Repeatedly ran towards his fallen comrades. Not being in a car during a drive-by shooting and running from the cops.

Into -fire- while soaked in fuel, and again after being badly burned.

Superman? You been one-upped, dude.

Antwon Rose was a hood rat who was involved in a drive-by shooting event. When the car he was riding in was stopped by LE, he chose to flee. Post shooting, his hands was checked for gunshot residue… and guess what??? Positive for GSR. If his momma, who I doubt was capable of formulating the statement attributed to her was looking for sympathy for her hood rat thug ‘Lil Din DoNuffin’ boi, she should look in the dictionary between “Shit” and “Syphilis” I STAND WITH ALEX VILLANUEVA!!!!

11B-Mailclerk

I will make the observation that if they test me for gunshot residue on most days, the meter will say “tilt”.

I suspect this is true of many of us here.

But it can be an indicator, although it is not necessarily a conclusive one.

Graybeard

Me too, brother. And my kids.

And I’m working on that being true for the grandkids. Managed to score some practice ammo the other day, so we are not confined to dry-fire practice.

John Seabee

I hear ya. Lil Din DoNuffin, though, should probably not have GSR on his hands, an empty 9mm magazine in his pocket, the stolen 9mm, with his DNA on it, and the victim eyewitness stating that Rose was shooting at him.

SFC D

yeahhhhh that kinda tips the scales a wee bit.

Roh-Dog

How DARE they not include Korryn Gaines on the list, she was just minding her own business, live streaming herself loading a shotgun while cradling her minor son during an armed standoff with police serving an arrest warrant and those demons shot her! /s

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

I wouldn’t be supprised if all these peeps with criminal records will be treated as saints under the harris biden campaign.

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

I don’t see Cannon Hinnant on that list

rgr769

He wasn’t black. Thus, his life didn’t matter. Anyway, that is what the feral pavement predator thought that shot him for the offense of dissin’ the hoodrat’s lawn.

The Other Whitey

Am I reading this right when I get the impression that Rose’s mother is pissed off at Villanueva for having SFC Cashe’s name on his helmet? If so, well, sorry, but she can fuck off and die. That man was a hero, not a doctored propaganda case.

SFC D

Concur. I’m sorry her son is dead, but that’s the path he chose. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

BYE-BYE National Felon League. Not only do they have plenty of felons in their ranks, now they’ve gone to pimping the names of them, so good riddance.

David

Interesting omission, Sandra Bland (the lady who suicided days after her arrest) is always among the usual thugs and felons listed. She doesn’t seem to be on this list.

Not sure this web site’s available bandwidth is sufficient to list the criminal records of a goodly part of that list.

E4 Mafia '83-'87

A quick scan of the “approved” list shows you who’s running the league. I see names of many criminals, miscreants, and other low-lifes. No pun intended NFL, but I think I’ll pass on watching your games.

Althea Bernstein? Seriously? For those unfamiliar with Althea Bernstein, she was (allegedly) attacked by “four classic white frat boys” in Madison Wisconsin the same evening that a crowd of mostly peaceful rioters tried to set fire to a County building. Her story sounded just as credible as Jessie Smollett’s attack.

This guy offers pretty compelling evidence on what actually happened.

Ooops.

I try real hard to look at people as individuals and not paint the group with a wide brush. In the case of the National Felon League, and its We have No Fans Left group, that is very difficult. Never was a big fan of jocks or any other self centered, egotistical, underworked, overpaid, crybabies. Particularly little sawed off twerps that try to depict Naval Aviators. Those really need to be put on ice, man. But, again, I digress.

BZ to the players who are trying to pay Honors to True Heros. The rest who are trying to make a political statement using thugs and ‘hood rats that brought their problems on to themselves can just kiss my Sorry White Black Hearted Irish Azz. Same for the organization that is allowing themselves to be held hostage by a bunch of domestic terrorists. I will watch at a few College Football Games. Those that are played by a team I may actually give a phuque about (and I have a barren field of phuques). Those games will also be limited to the ones that are on regular no pay free broadcast TV. Anybody notice how few and far between those are now?

It would be interesting to see a semi synopsis of the life history of these names…not that it would stop them from making demi-gods out of useful idiots for the most part. I have sympathies for people who may have been in the wrong place/line of fire at the wrong time, and certainly the ones that came up against rogue cops. The rest? None at all.

Sparks

Green Thumb beat me to it but I agree..FUCK the NFL!

An approved names list?!? Really! What if you wanted to wear your mother’s name after she died?

This has become absurd and if the NFL thinks they can stay afloat with the viewership of BLM and Antifa, then good fucking luck.

How much more do they think they could make if they banned any names and just played the game for the money they make?

Of course, the owners are queefs and panty waisted fucktards who cower in fear at the thought of one of their prime beef players leaving. I say fuck them all. If they leave or refuse to play, there are a hundred guys waiting in the wings to take their place.

These players are not rare, they are just the best-calculated pick of the litter and the litter is fucking huge.

Three years ago I was a Sunday Ticket subscriber. Now I won’t even watch for free. Pro football has been ruined for me forever. It didn’t have to be this way.

If they wanted to truly test the interest in all of this they would just have collectible trading cards for felons and see how much they sell.

Proceeds going toward social justice initiatives of course.

Anonymous

“It’s not politics, it’s social justice,” they insist. Cultural Marxism, comrade– the issue is never the issue because the issue is always the revolution!

Anonymous

Done drunk the PC Kool Aid like ESPN did… get “woke,” go broke.

Another Steeler player says nope to having an alleged criminal’s name on back of his helmet…

Daisy Cutter

Years ago, the Kansas City Chiefs were certainly in a bind when Chief’s player Jovan Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend and then turned the gun on himself and committed suicide at the practice facility.

They wanted to honor him in a game the next day as they felt a tremendous loss. However, by wearing his name or number on their uniform they would be supporting someone that committed domestic violence.

There was no formal mention of the shooting at the game. Instead, they had a moment of silence for “victims of domestic violence and their families.”

Had it gone down differently and he committed suicide by police, I wonder if they would have acted differently?

Claw

Never was a big Steelers fan, not even back in their hey-day, but now with CPT Villanueva will give them a Thumbs-Up for continuing the tradition of having a CIB recipient on the payroll.

Ex-PH2

I have not watched TV football since some crapweasel slammed into Joe Theismann and broke his leg on the field, on camera.
