This actually happens somewhat regularly. Any local/state case can go federal, no deputization required. The only time it’s needed is if the officer is crossing state lines and there’s no reciprocity between states (i.e. State A’s peace officers aren’t recognized as such by State B) or if the cop is going to be arresting for violations of federal law. The latter is probably the reason here, but anything rioters would be arrested for on the ground on federal property would be a state law violation as well as a federal one.
So the feds WILL be sending federal $$ to help out the locals. This may not have been what the dims meant when they requested that the feds help to rebuild.

Well, in theory, when they show up at the polling place, the voter role will show they already voted, and they will not be allowed to do so again. Of course this is much more likely if they are required to show ID to vote, but if the system works, and there’s no fraud….
