…hurt in Olympic Mountains
MOUNT TOWNSEND, Wash. — A helicopter crew from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island rescued a hiker who was severely injured in a fall Sunday evening in the Buckhorn Wilderness area of the Olympic Mountains.
The Navy chopper crew responded after receiving an alert from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office about a hiker who had fallen off a ridgeline at Mount Townsend, broke both legs and had a potential traumatic brain injury.
Once the crew reached the location they hoisted the couple aboard the helicopter and flew them to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
The rescue crew contacted the injured hiker’s wife, who helped guide the helicopter crew to their location and provided valuable information about approaching inclement weather conditions, Navy officials said.
Navy “chopper” crew? *sigh* Another BZ to the Whidbey SAR boys and girls for a save, and to the wife for keeping cool under duress. Read the rest here: Navy Times

Capt. Chestnut’s callsign is FERRET.
Some callsigns just write themselves.
OOPS….wrong guy.
Bravo Zulu, SAR. You should never have to pay for a beer.
“Navy chopper crew…sigh”? Aren’t those the people that make sure the radishes and onions are prepared along with the lettuce? That is, in the Galley, between SEAL missions? Or, are they the ones that insure there is a steady supply of oak and hickory pieces for making TWBGCC? Isn’t steam to propel Naval Vessels made in a “Tea Kettle” these days, NOT by using 18 inch lengths of stove wood?
BZ to these Aeronautically Designated Rotary Wing SAR Troops for another job well done, saving idiots from their own stoopidity. Thirty eight rescues so far this year, that’s what, at least once a week? And all of that, in their spare time, in addition to their other duties. Damn, one would almost think they that run a milblog dashboard as an admin type or…something. Wonder if they like Aviation Action Motion Pictures? Or volley ball games…on the beach?

Yeah, and they make ugly and unridable motorcycles, too. WTF am I going to do with you, Gun Bunny? EVERYONE knows only Nautically Challenged troops ride in “choppers,” a low and demeaning term for the much more elegant “Helos” used by the Navy.
Don’t you need to go and light some C-4 to warm up your lunch?
” 😛 ” “WTF am I going to do with you…” Send Ms Thang from Sunday morning over, I’ll make her a list of ways she can punish me.
“….C-4 to warm up your lunch?” Naw man, it’s Thursday and Ex is cooking, remember? ‘Sides that, I intercepted the jar of gravy she shipped out to that Hardin Boy the other day. Sho does help to have low friends in high places at the UPS World Hub in Caintuck, the Fed X in Memphis, and the USPS Chitcongo. Now if I could just get them cat heads baked up.
My uncle was a career Navy rotary wing aviator, he used the term “heclopeters” more often than not.
Sounds like the wife has some training to help survive, and help her husband survive, in the wilderness.
Big proponent of outdoors training.
The first rule of surviving in the wilderness is do everything you can to avoid a survival situation in the wilderness. Knowledge and planning, people. Murphy is out there and he will mess up your day.
Knowledge, planning, regular training, risk mitigation, and be prepared for it all to go to hell in a handbasket at any minute, and know what to do when it does.
I’m impressed by her too. Not easy to remain calm and (more importantly) useful in a situation like that.
Awesome Job !!!!!!
Maybe he meant “whirlybird”. Hard to keep up with the latest terminology these days. Just lucky for the fall ee they were up to the task at hand. I have flown in a lot of helos like UH-34s , CH46s and Hueys but nothing newer than that.

“Whirlybird!” I remember watching that on TV when I was a kid!
