Idiots in the gun control debate
Yeah, I’ve read some real stupid shit in teh interwebz today in regards to gun control, but this one just deserved a public answer. It’s from some shithole called Balloon Juice written by a guy named John Cole who explains that he was supposedly in the 11th ACR stationed at Camp Doha between the wars with Iraq;
So why am I telling you this? Because in the middle of one of the most dangerous regions in the world, even with clear Rules of Engagement, every time I went on gate duty, there was a piece of tape over my ammo clip on my M-16 and M1911 .45. Why? Because the most heavily armed military in the world did not want accidental shootings. If a situation arose, I would have to eject my ammo clip, remove the tape, and reinsert and work the action before I could fire.
This was in a combat zone. Yet I have spent the last two fucking days dealing with armchair commandos telling me they need unlimited firepower to be safe in… Connecticut.
If there are bigger pussies in the world than gun nuts, I don’t know who the fuck they are.
So, because he was such an incompetent boob that he needed to have his ammo taped in his magazine, gun nuts are pussies – yeah, I don’t see the connection either. Besides, he calls them “ammo clips” – who, with more than a day in the Army, calls box magazines “ammo clips”? So, I’m thinking that John Cole was a cook, or anything except someone his unit would allow to guard something. And, I’m pretty sure that between the Iraq Wars, the Army was using 9mm Barettas and not the M1911A1 .45 cal pistol.
And the reason any magazines were taped wasn’t to prevent the ammunition from loading. The Army did that when ammunition was passed between guard shifts for accountability. But, of course, any dingus who thought they’re called “ammo clips” wouldn’t know that.
So why do I call Balloon Juice a shit hole? Because all of their writers are gun grabbing facists, apparently. They write shit like this;

Mistermix, my Glock uses high capacity magazines, not clips. The ammunition for my M4 is in clips until I put the bullets in the magazine. If you’re going to talk the language of gun control, learn the language of guns first.
After posting the Wikipedia entry for events leading up to the UK’s gun ban, Imani Gandy (ABL) posts this;

If you weren’t suggesting that we ban guns, why did you have to tell us that the UK banned guns because of an incident somewhat similar to Sandy Hook? You know how I got to be a “Universal Expert” (your words, not mine) on what we were talking about? I actually read about a case you apparently knew little to nothing about and found more to it than your throwaway blathering suggested. It probably also helps that I worked in law enforcement as a Deputy Sheriff for several years too, and saw quite a bit of the criminal justice system up close and personal.
But, keep on telling everyone else that they need to do their homework. It’s worth a few laughs to me.

I served in 4/2 ACR from 1988-1991; deployed to SWA in Early December 1990 for the big dance there. I left SWA 20 April 1991, a few days before the rest of the Squadron. Our Regiment had switched over to the M9 before I got there (I got to WGermany in July). While deployed to SWA I never saw a 1911.
I only ever saw 1 1911 during my time in Germany; it was Reforger ’88. He was with (I believe)an INF unit.
I went to Fulda a few times during my time there, and saw everyone with M9s; never a 1911.
Just sayin’.
One more thing:
As both 2 ACR and 11 ACR were the forward deployed units of their respective Corps, they automatically were the first units in USAREUR to get the newer equipment/weapons systems (the improved Bradleys I know for a fact happened while we were in Saudi Arabia before Desert Shield started; as I was getting to my unit we were just turning in the Hueys for Blackhawks).

Um, every household in Switzerland has a firearm. Every citizen is required to go to the range once a year to train with their firearm and the government provides the ammunition (they, also, supplied the firearm), so your comparison doesn’t apply to them. It, also, doesn’t apply to Norway, since one lunatic with weapons killed many more people than Lanza. It, also, doesn’t apply to Kennesaw Georgia, where every household is required to have a working firearm and ammunition, and they have the lowest crime rate in the US for cities with approx. the same amount of citizens. You keep comparing Europe to the US, only it’s not a proper comparison, since our founding documents were written at a time when there were monarchies in most of Europe ans we were throwing off the oppression of that system to create on where individual freedom is paramount and the government is supposed to be subservant to the people, which was a very radical thing. The thing is; you don’t have the right to tell me how I am to protect myself and my family. It is not your call, just as it’s not my right to tell you how to protect yourself. As soon as you understand that, the better off you will be. If you want to compare the US to Europe, well, in Europe you can be thrown in jail for words you speak. That’s right, for words you speak, you can be thrown in the jug. So, should we be like Europe in every respect, or should we continue to be the United States of America?

There is a responsibility to keep our schools secure, I call for an enactment as leadership has failed totally on the social front. The collective leadership has not been able to maintain control of society functioning right. Working on several days after the school horrors, there has not been a call for securing all schools nationwide with law enforcement personnel. Furthering a political agenda based on those very serious school issues, and not addressing the issue of keeping the schools safe is a failure. I call for this to be made grounds for disciplinary actions against the failing collective leadership and for ways to be changed to keep our nation secure! If you fail at your job you get fired, if our political friends fail aint shit happens. We need to change this equation since no discipline gets no results!

John Cole’s statements at the Wet Condom blog regarding many, many other issues pre-date his latest idiocy and well establish him as a pandering puke. His readership–all 7 of them, including his insignificant other–are simply to be discounted. But rather like a watching a drunken monkey circus, they are good for a few laughs.

It seems that “dirk” above is either really lazy or has issues with reading comprehension. He obviously missed comments 786 and 843 above, or didn’t understand them. Those comments clearly indicate that Cole’s service at Camp Doha AFTER the Persian Gulf War is not in question. Ergo, the picture of Cole standing on a tank in Kuwait is plausible – and irrelevant. It tells us nothing that hasn’t already been confirmed via other means.
What was – and what remains – in question is precisely what hazards and dangers Cole personally saw and faced. Cole claims to have served in a “dangerous” place, thus implying he faced substantial personal danger. However, he was in Kuwait well after the end of hostilities in Iraq. The 11th ACR deployed to Kuwait in Jun-Sep 1991.
I’m wondering just how dangerous Cole’s service could have been. By June 1991, there were no longer any shots being fired in anger in Kuwait, including along the Iraqi border. There hadn’t been for over 3 months.

For all the Libs that screem that our gun laws would lead us back to the wild west I would like to add that both Deadwood and Dodge City both had complete gun bans back in the day. Well, in the case of Dodge City the gun ban was only for North of the Railroad tracks.

#897, Hondo, here’s a ‘No shit, there I was…’ on the dangers of Kuwait…. I was in Kuwait in ’02 and ’03 and did work in 2 or 3 man teams off base at times. We carried a Beretta in a backpack, but never once did we have a feeling that we’d need it. It was more of a hindrance than anything since the backpack actually made us stand out.
I spent more time getting open water certified and hanging out at Uncle Frosty’s than I did on anything else. They had a nice MWR spot too. However, I did get bit by a scorpion and spent three days in the hospital, so maybe he was thinking the wildlife was dangerous. Heh, just imagine if they had eagles there.
Yes, there have been incidents such as the attempted drive by on Falayka Island, the two contractors killed at a traffic light, and the Soldiers stopped by Kuwaiti Police and then shot by the policeman, but it’s still safer than DC.
