Calls for renewal of Assault Weapons Ban

| December 16, 2012

chuck-schumer-shooting-a-tech-9

Democrats took to the airways today tripping over each other to get in front of a camera so they can be seen doing something, regardless of how useless. Joe Lieberman, reminding us why he isn’t really a conservative, called for a commission to investigate the relationship between video games and guns. Chuck Schumer, pictured above with a shit-eating grin and firing a Tech-9, called for a limit on magazine capacity. While Dianne Feinstein renewed her promise to reintroduce the 90s “Assault Weapons Ban”;

“We’re crafting this one and it’s going to be done with care, it’ll be ready on the first day. I’ll be announcing House authors and we’ll be prepared to go. And I hope the nation will really help,” she told NBC’s “Meet The Press.”

Feinstein also said she is confident the bill will have the support of President Obama, who has previously come out in favor of re-implementing the assault weapons ban.

While the politicians were flapping their gums, a shooter in California was busting caps in a mall parking lot, more than 50 rounds, according to reports;

Marcos Gurrola, 42, of Garden Grove was taken into custody by bicycle police officers patrolling around the open-air Fashion Island mall around 4:30 p.m., police spokeswoman Cathy Lowe said. She said he fired into the air and onto the ground in the parking lot near a Macy’s department store.

No one was injured, but the gunfire caused panic, coming just a day after a gunman killed 26 children and adults at a Connecticut elementary school, and days after a deadly mall shooting in Oregon. Some of the shoppers in California on Saturday said they ran, screaming as they looked for a safe shelter.

I don’t know how Mr. Gurrola could have been shooting all of those rounds, though. It seems that large capacity magazines have been illegal in California since 2001. Well, not illegal to possess them, but it’s illegal to sell them or borrow them, so unless he’s owned it since 2001 just so he could bust a bunch of caps eleven years later in a parking lot, he got a hold of it illegally somehow.

The Chicago Sun-Times is waging war on rifles that are .223 caliber judging by the number of times the author uses “.223 caliber rifle” in this article. Just as a word of warning to the Sun-Times, there are handguns in .223 caliber, too. Thompson Center’s Contender comes to mind.

And of course, Nanny Bloomberg took time time away from slapping babies’ bottles out of their mouths to run his own suck about guns and leadership – both subjects he’s out of his depth on;

While Mayor Bloomberg said it is right for President Obama to console the grieving in Newtown, on the assault weapons ban he says it’s time for the president to stand up and lead.

“His views on issues like this are the right views, but the president has to translate those views into action. His job is not just to be well-meaning, his job is to perform and to protect the American public,” said Bloomberg on NBC’s “Meet The Press.”

Yeah, well, all the Feds can do is disarm law abiding Americans. The incessant “do something” coming from the emotional Left isn’t helpful in the “rational national discussion” they’re saying we should have. Neither are their calls for the death of the NRA President. Or their calls for rewriting the 2d Amendment out of the Bill of Rights.

As if this whole thing couldn’t get more tawdry, the Westboro non-Baptist non-Church has decided to protest at the services in Newtown, but the hacktivists at Anonymous have finally done something useful and posted WBC’s contact information for their members.

And, oh, yeah, the local Catholic Church in Newtown received a threatening phone call during services today, and State Police showed up with assault rifles to protect the evacuated parishioners.

This threat of legislation is not about weapons, or lessening crime in any manner. The legislation is going to very red meat to Obama’s base, and be used to further bash an already-capitulating Speaker Boehner to increase taxes and the spending ceiling without legal Congressional budget-making.

Never let any crisis go to waste.

There is always a “do something” hue and cry whenever some tragedy occurs and the political class always wants to be seen as responsive to that, regardless of whether or not what is done is effective.

I’ve been surfing a few message boards, most of which have little to do with politics, and there is usually a thread on the shootings. There are always a few hoplophobes who say something like “nobody is out to take away guns, but there is no reason for someone to own an assault rifle”. Once you probe this line of reasoning (I use the word loosely) and explain why attempting to ban scary looking guns will not be effective, the grabbers start to show their true colors.

The “honest conversation” that they say they want to have is nothing other than them wanting to whine about how burdensome they find it is to be a free citizen. Nanny should take care of them and make it all better.

Sounds similar to the same argument that Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) made years ago – having campaigned herself for renewal of the federal assault weapons ban. When she was asked why she wanted to ban guns that had barrel shrouds, she couldn’t answer to what a barrel shroud was… just that she wanted them banned. In other words, she knew she wanted to ban barrel shrouds, but didn’t know why. These people have no idea what they’re talking about, which is dangerous considering they make the laws in this country.

“Who wants to show the country that we’re really doing something to stop mass murder?”

In the Senate, 100 hands go up. In the House, 435 hands do.

“Okay then, let’s ban some guns! Oh, and remember to pick up your talking points before you meet the press. Try not to ad lib. And there’s visine available if you need tears.”

Will Nanny Doomberg et al disarm their own security details and mingle with the public peasants?

The Brown Bess, in 1781, was an Assault Weapon when used during the seige at Yorktown.

The 58 Springfield Musket of our own Civil War was an Assault Weapon when used during the seige at Petersburg.

To the Prognazi-as-a-purist when discussing the 2nd Amendment, this civil right only pertains to muskets. But muskets are assault weapons. Which Feinstein wants to ban.

So will museums have their collections confiscated?

2-17 Air Cav

Making certain guns illegal to own or to possess will not stop their being owned or possessed. Congress knows that, just as rape’s being a crime does not stop rape. But when Congress makes something a crime, Congress gets to say, “Our job is done. Our hands are clean. Next item.”

Biermann

Did anyone else catch Doofburg say these things don’t happen anywhere else except in America?

JP

Chuckie’s holding that Tech like a nancy.

2-17 Air Cav

Oh. I forgot to offer in comment #7 that the foregoing is why the ultimate goal must be to ban ALL GUNS. There is no such thing as a little bit of rape that doesn’t qualify as a crime or a smidgeon of murder that doesn’t qualify as a crime. Similarly, there will–ultimately–need to be a point at which all gun possession is banned and all gun possession is a crime.

The retards in Washington will probably take our guns and sell them to drug cartels. Because citizens don’t need them, but criminal organizations do!

My cousin is a Priest at St. Lima’s and was up there about a year ago for his ordination. My cousin comes from good stock and while you never want to be faced with this, he is well aware of the evil that does lurk about.

Didn’t hit me until today for some reason as to how awful and evil it is. I’m sure those that have been in war/combat know this too well as well as how spiritual warfare is just as important:

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
your rod and your staff comfort me.

Indeed, goodness and mercy will pursue me
all the days of my life;
I will dwell in the house of the LORD
for endless days.” (Psalm 23)

2-17 Air Cav

@12. In churches all over the country today, folks prayed for that community. People tend to remember God at times like these. And that’s a good thing because for those directly affected by the murders, there is no earthly comfort possible. None.

Country Singer

@6 DaveO, the best counter-argument to the “2A = Muskets” argument is that if that is the case, then 1A = Manual Printing Presses and Town Criers.

The following items are assault weapons: Pike – a spear used in combat by foot soldiers Sword – a long-shafted edged weapon with a hilt and pommel used in combat by both horse and foot soldiers Horse – an animal used in combat to transport a mounted, armed and armored soldier, frequently wears armor and weighs as much as 4500 pounds (e.g., Shire horse); also used to transport carriage weapons such as carriage cannons Arrow – a wooden or metal shafted weapon with a bodkin (sharply pointed) head, used for both hunting by hunterd, and in combat by archers Bow – a means of firing said arrows Crossbow – a means of firing an arrow or bolt, constructed to create a higher speed by using a trigger to release the bowstring Morningstar – a metal or wooden shaft with a spiked ball at the head, used in a fight as a club Mace – a metal or wooden shaft with spiked metal balls on chains at the head, used in a fight as a club Stiletto/dagger — short-shafted edged weapon used for close combat and for eating Slingshot – a weapon consisting of two double thongs or strings with a saddle in the middle, used for launching rocks at a target; effective in combat if user is properly trained Rocks – ammunition for a slingshot but may be used without one Quarterstaff — a straightened and hardened sapling, preferably oak or hickory, used in hand-to-hand combat in a ring or as a walking staff, about 60+ inches in length All of the items mentioned above are weapons that have been used in combat since they were invented, going back to the earliest periods in history when people fought each other in wars. I did not include the chariot, siege tower or ballista, because they are either not in general use, or not easily portable. For a quarterstaff bout, refer to the combat between Gandalf and Saruman in LOTR-Two Towers. All of these items can be seen at any Renaissance Faire and some of them, such as the sword, slingshot, quarterstaff,… Read more »

WE NEED Federal Gun control, I mean look what happens when the Feds don’t have control. Gun running to Mexican Drug Lords, and several other gun running oporations that have killed hundreds. I am all for Federal Gun Control, those idiots need control. So, before those idiots in Washington enforce controls on me I want them controlled before they cause more murders.

Common Sense

I liked Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) when he said he wished the principal had an M4 in her office.

“I wish to God she had had an M4 in her office locked up so when she heard gunfire she pulls it out and she didn’t have to lunge heroically with nothing in her hands, when she takes him out, takes his head off before he can kill those precious kids,” Gohmert said on “Fox News Sunday.”

Just to make himself feel better about all this, my son went down to the range (BlueCore) with his M4 today.

This:

is the REAL problem.

I hereby propose the following: Before any Congresscritter can pass any law that capitalizes on a tragedy, there shall be a 90 day waiting period. During that period, the citizens of this country will review the law and may allow it to pass to the House for a vote.

BinhTuy66

I’ve never posted here before. Found the link through POW/MIA several months ago while checking out wannabees.

#(1) I’m devastated by the loss yesterday, especially so in regards to all the children. I’ve made a point to stay away from the news issues.

#(2) Today my son forwarded an e-mail to me with a photo of a young female school teacher in Israel taking her young class on some kind of field trip. Interesting that she has an M-1 carbine slung across her shoulder. I don’t know how to fwd the photo but it does not appear to be fake. No magazine locked in. Appears to be two mags. in a GI stock pouch. Sorry, I forgot to mention “ammo clips stuck in that gun” for blumdump and freakstien. If anyone wants the photo I’ll try to figure out how to post it here.

#(3) Re: chuck schumer firing the Tec-9 (photo above) has a “very familiar” grip on that “really nasty looking little gun”. I suspect that limp elbow/wrist teeny gun grip was learned from waking up early in the morning when he turned 21 and reached into his winnie the pooh undies to scratch.

I suspect the reason he’s really smiling (above) is he found a T-9 that’s bigger his snub nose .22 BB.

NHSparky

If they’re so scared of a .223, then what’ll they do when they find out what a bolt-action .308 or .300 WinMag can do when paired with a person who knows what the fuck they’re doing with a weapon?

RandyB
B Woodman

I’d giggle like a little school girl if someone were to photoshop that picture of Chucky Cheezehead above, with the picture of the pistol that has the grip facing forward and the barrel pointing backwards.

B Woodman

And #15 Ex-PH2 is right. The only true “weapon” is the mind. Everything else is just a tool to implement the will of the mind.

Ex-PH2

It’s obvious that you can come up with all the stats in the world to show that the antigun/antiweapon people are wrong, and they’ll ignore what you say or vent profanity at you because you’re right and they can’t stand anyone who doesn’t think the way they do. I thought that liberal meant “free to choose”, not ‘controlled by the state’. Boy, how that has changed. The so-called progressives are anything but. They are, in fact, regressive, preferring the limits placed on them by an autocracy rather than thinking for themselves. That speaks volumes about how limited their vision is, because when government does all the thinking for you there is no progress, only stagnation. Was there nothing about the collapse of the USSR in 1989 that they understand? Can they not see that it was financially and politically bankrupt and could no longer function in a modern world? How difficult is it to understand that? I can only say that if these overgrown children, which is what they are, want someone else to take all the responsibility for life away from them and do whatever the government decides they can or cannot do, including where they can live, what their careers can be, and how many kids they can have, then they have no business telling the rest of us that we are “wrong” if we don’t agree to that. These are the same people who bitched and moaned when Richard Nixon got Congress to pass a law making 55MPH the speed limit on the national and state highways. It was meant to reduce gas consumption. When that law was repealed, the immediate shout was that highway deaths would go up. I don’t think it actually changed, at all. Does anyone have a statistic on that? Because I have yet to see any difference. This debate about gun control/laws/whatever is less about gun control than it is about not wanting to take responsibility for anything. They want everything decided for them, including what they’re allowed to eat. If they were suddenly put under the rule of the kind of… Read more »

@24. After the repeal of the 55 mph (nearly) national speedlimit, both the number of accidents and the number of highway deaths dropped. Moreover, fuel consumption was NOT reduced by the 55 mph limit. It was a Fail-Fail for the doom and gloomers and the environazis. Go figure.

Can’t find any comprehensive statistics readily available, but this summary seems to indicate that 2-17 Air Cav and Ex-PH2 are correct, at least for the 20 years between 1990 and 2009 (inclusive).

http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/2012/tables/12s1103.pdf

Further, it’s not only the rate statistics that seem to show a reasonably steady decline. The overall total is declining as well, in spite of the much higher number of vehicle-miles driven and drivers.

Further: numbers for 2010 apparently showed further decline – to the lowest rates in US history.

“Never waste a good tragedy”

When your elected leaders are liars, thieves, adulterers, and criminals and your celebrity heroes are drug addicts, drunks, liars and buffoons and the keys to success are lying, conniving, and instant self gratification the best thing to do is pick something irrelevant to the discussion of what’s troubling the nation like guns.

The victims this past Friday were shocking because of their innocent age, but the amount killed at the school was still less than our daily average.

If you review the FBI statistics, we only kill about 40 people a day through murder and non-negligent manslaughter as compared to about 65 a day every day back in the early 90s. So we are better now than we have been for a long time, but we are still a violent society. There are many uncomfortable truths to discuss about what we are, a nation that has a great deal of criminals who use physical violence and murder to obtain their goals. Our leaders could choose to bring a real discussion about mental illness, criminality, and the associated fallout of an undereducated, relatively useless segment of the population.

Or we could just keep talking about banning guns as if that will change our nature.

NHSparky

VOV–I’m still waiting for our local libbies to chime in on the shootings in LA, DC, NYC, Chicago, Boston, et al…all of which, last time I checked, have VERY strict gun laws.

Spade

Evidently WV’s newest gun supporting Senator now supports Bloomberg.

Good job with that vote, WV.

PintoNag

We don’t need gun control — what we need is NUT control!

Ex-PH2

Sparky, VOV, when they do chime in, please point out that in a very large number of states, texting while driving is illegal because the related statistics show that texting while driving has been the direct cause of a high number of fatal accidents.

It has not stopped idiots from texting while driving.

Driving under the influence, which now includes many kinds of substances other than alchol, is also illegal.

It has not stopped idiots from driving while buzzed.

Meth is illegal everywhere. It has not stopped people from making, selling and using it.

David

PintoNag – amen.

I’m sure a new law would be effective…. after all, the existing laws certainly were. Stopped him from killing his mother and stealing her guns and taking them into a school…. oh, wait…..

NHSparky

Driving under the influence,

I’ll go you one better. Cops can and will stop, arrest, and charge you with DWI even if no drugs or alcohol is in your system, because the “I” stands for “Impaired”, meaning if you’re too fatigued to drive and do so, you can be at risk.

I wish I was kidding.

Note to self: “How a politician stands on the Second Amendment tells you how he or she views you as an individual… as a trustworthy and productive citizen, or as part of an unruly crowd that needs to be lorded over, controlled, supervised, and taken care of.”

Ex-PH2

Sen. Dick Durbin (IL) has been chiming in on this, in regard to renewing the ‘assault weapons ban’.

Since I’m not sure what he means by assault weapons, should I take my list of home/kitchen objects and send that to him, and point out the obvious? He actually is a decent person, but he keeps referring to military-style assault weapons.

So is Gov. Quinn, who started the Citizens Utility Board, a watchdog group that goes after utilities when they want unreasonable rate changes and/or engage in ripping off consumers.

I think my concern is that neither of them has a clue. Should I give them one?

Ex-PH2

Sparky – re: driving under the influence — I know you’re not kidding. I don’t have the statistics on people falling asleep at the wheel and having accidents, but I got stopped by Alexandria, VA, cops one night when I was driving home at 2AM after baby-sitting for some friends.

I got dozy while I was driving, so I slowed down and stopped. The cops pulled me over because they thought I’d been drinking.

It was 1968, so they let me go. I guess they’d lock me up now, right?
