You have followed the teaching of us that have worn the crown, my son… your name shall be entered into the Book of WOT, blessed by St. Jonn of TAH, annointed by EX-PH2 and the lionesses of TAH and held in high esteem for one week.

NOW GIT YOU ASS BACK TO WORK! 😉

2/17 Air Cav

This issue of postings being listed during the same minute causes me no end of grief. I recently visited the matter in the hopes of learning whether there is a way to determine whether the one that appears first was necessarily sent first. The answer is no, that someone could hit “Post Comment” a second ahead of one or more people and appear here as 2nd or 3rd. Quick fingers and quick routing through AlGore’s www control. Now, if someone wants to move that the rules be amended to allow for official ties, I will not object. In fact, I have a hoss story to tell regarding this. Many years ago I was at Old Hilltop (Pimlico) and there was a three-horse entry, meaning for a bet, you get all three horses. Anyway, the three stablemates hit the wire at the exact same time. No problem, right, the rules covered deadheats. They did, but only partially. No one foresaw that more than a two-horse entry might tie, so there was no rule regarding how to pay the Exacta (or Perfecta.)

Perry Gaskill

Per a prior comment, there’s probably no way to solve a network latency issue short of someone moving closer to the TAH server with less distance and/or fewer hops.

One way to eliminate the appearance of a tie is to make the timestamps more fine grained; instead of simply recording hours and minutes, the recording is set to hours-minutes-seconds-10th seconds or whatever. IIRC, a typical WordPress weblog running off a MySQL database would need to have a “time” type database field changed to reflect the new parameters.

2/17 Air Cav

Yeah, Perry, I based what I wrote above on what you wrote last week (or was it the week before last?)in reply to my inquiry. If no one moves to have ties, with a second and third to carry it, there will be only one firsty per week.

Eden

“Now, if someone wants to move that the rules be amended to allow for official ties, I will not object.”

I thought the official posting was supposed to be around 1300 hours? I think we had a little premature posting here, what to the official TAH rulebook say? Inquiring minds want to know?

2/17 Air Cav

There is no rule regarding the posting hour. It generally comes within the same hour and a half period each Friday but has been posted earlier than noon on a few occasions. At least once, the Blog Owner posted it on a Thursday afternoon.

OWB

Thought the official posting was whenever the official poster decided to post it.

2/17 Air Cav

So, when does the weekend begin? Is it Friday? Friday after work? Friday if off? And if the last, what if one is off all week?

OWB

Would suggest that for purposes of the Weekend Open Thread, aka WOT, only, but subject to others coopting the meaning of the term for their own use should they so desire, that the true meaning of “week-end” is irrelevant. To the addlepated and/or otherwise simple of mind, the WOT can be posted whenever the poster wishes to post it. It is customary that it be posted after noon on Friday EST/EDT. Thought that was covered under Rule 78.a.6, but that may have changed recently. Or my rememberer may be on indefinite pause. Either way, A/C, it is up to you to decide. Just making a suggestion based on nothing in particular.

Cable Dawg

Commander’s call was held in the morning today. I had no chance at the glory so I guess I’ll have to save my attempt for next week.

“de-railed by circumstances beyond my control” has been the story of the last two days for me.

2/17 Air Cav

Glory it is. Among the many who visit here monthly, among the dozens and dozens of threads and thousands of comments, there is only one WOT and it comes but once every week. There are dedicated TAH Dickweeds who stand at the ready each Friday around noon, constantly hitting refresh with the singular aim of declaring “First!” and being first. Relatively few know the delirium of triumph in this endeavor. Glory, indeed. It is a glory unlike any other, to be recorded for posterity in the sacred “Book of Firsts.” Good luck.

Poetrooper

“dedicated TAH Dickweeds” appears to be a very accurate and appropriate descriptive for those engaged in this endeavor to know the “delirium of triumph.”

You’re on a word-smithing roll today, Cav.

The Dems in California are pushing Secession (again! 1860 all over again). But do they not expect ~35% of their population to object?

Of course they do. And they will likely do everything in their power to drive those folks out: taxes, laws, and later, civil unrest and “temporary service interruptions”.

As the loyalists vacate, more settling of others, more reliably loyal to Master: “Land reform”, “redistribution”, and eventually forced-relocation tranquility.

Why? Because the one thing that will bring in the US armed forces is trying to disenfranchise large numbers of loyal Americans. Their rights are enforceble (remember Little Rock?) thus rather inconvinient to the would-be secessionists.

What I havent figured out is how they plan to hang on to all the power and water they need, being a net importer of both. But the secessionists have to have considered this.

Hostages? Trade the holdouts for a power and water treaty?

Next two years get interesting. If the Dems lose further seats in 2018, especially Senate, then California probably goes whole-hog secessionist.

Interesting times indeed!

Flagwaver

If that happens, I hope they allow the State of Jefferson to finally form. For those unaware, here’s the basics:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jefferson_(proposed_Pacific_state)

cobrakai99

I thinks it’s funny that the succesionists don’t think the Red counties will not go all West Virginia on them.

Perry Gaskill

Dunno. Calexit seems like the sideshow of a small faction gaming the initiative process. The main event is more likely to be the fight over illegal alien sanctuaries.

On Tuesday, San Francisco filed a lawsuit against President Trump’s executive order threatening to cut federal funding to sanctuary cities. Per some reports, the city would stand to lose $1.2 Billion annually while acting as a shelter for an estimated 44,000 undocumented immigrants.

At least one irony of the San Francisco lawsuit is that it cites the “sovereignty” of the city under the 10th Amendment as rationale for the legal move. Never mind that open borders and the sovereignty of the U.S. is what’s at stake in the first place.

Meanwhile, also on Tuesday, a state senate bill sponsored by Senate President Kevin de Leon passed through the initial committee stage, and would prevent “state law enforcement from working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to identify or detain people for deportation,” according to The Intercept. If adopted, it would in effect turn California into a sanctuary state.

11B-Mailclerk

I can certainly respect discussion 10th Amendment issues, as I prefer it not become a dead letter.

Settled SCOTUS case – the Federal government is responsible for immigration law and policy, not the states, By inference, that was ceded to the Federal level when the States joined together.

Now at what point does the “sanctuary state” cross over form not being told what to do, into actively thwarting, AKA “obstruction of Justice”?

Example: Little Rock. The Supreme Court said “separate is not equal”. Ordered to integrate, the Dems said “Oh -hell- no!”, going so far as to call out state troops. Vexed, the Federal government (Eisenhower – Republican) sent in Federal troops to enforce the decision.

At some point, the verbal/legal argument ends in stalemate and force is declared. The Federals usually win that one, and have rather reliably since the Whiskey Rebellion.

This is not necessarily good for Liberty, as the point of a Bayonet makes for rather bad law.

But if things continue as they are, we will again see the troops called out. And that will get decidedly messy.

My prediction: if the Dems continue to lose Congressional seats in 2018, especially if the Senate goes 60+ Republican, we will have de-facto insurrection in significant areas before 2020, possibly as early as 2018.

All compromise is being self-purged from the Dems, and being replaced by rage.

Flagwaver

Are there any updates on Crash-and-Bernath’s arraignment? Was it a minority female judge and a minority female prosecutor for him to offend and get held in contempt by someone other than us?

Silentium Est Aureum

One can only hope.

LC

I haven’t been able to get on TAH much the past few days, so allow me to unintentionally stir the pot – word is President Trump wasn’t in the Situation Room during DEVGRU’s op in Yemen.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/donald-trump-not-in-situation-room-yemen-raid-30-civilians-killed-us-navy-seal-dead-first-military-a7561596.html

I can understand he’s a busy man and all, but shouldn’t the President be present for such a high-risk operation? I’d guess, and I could be wrong, that if Obama had skipped an op like this he’d be held in some contempt, so is this acceptable, routine, or pretty lousy? I’m genuinely curious to hear opinions.

As a side note, I know Hondo is still away, but is that ‘away-and-not-well’, or ‘away-and-fine’? Anyone know?

ex-OS2

Are you talking about the raid that was planned under the Obama administration?

All missions are high risk, was Obama in the Situation Room for all of them during his reign?

I will concede and place the blame on Bush.

LC

Planned, but not executed. And I’m not finding any fault with the President for the outcome of the mission -high risk involves the potential for losses and collateral damage, no question- but I’m thinking if I’m President, and I’m authorizing my first mission into Yemen, I’m going to be in the Situation Room following it live.

And, again, had this been Obama, I think he’d take flack from conservatives for not being there (‘playing golf’, metaphorically), so shouldn’t Trump come under the same criticism? Then again, there’s nothing he can do but follow, so maybe not. I don’t know which way I feel, so I’m curious to hear thoughts on it from others.

ex-OS2

Fair enough.

He was advised throughout the mission.

Remind me where Obama was during the Benghazi attack? White House visitor logs indicate Michael Donilon, David Ginsberg, and Ron Klain where there for “debate prep”.

Remind me where Obama was the day after the Benghazi attacks for his security briefing. My memory is fuzzy but I think maybe burning fuel on Air Force One heading to Vegas.

I guess we can wait for the Presidential Daily Diary to be made available.

Nixon had an 18 1/2 minute gap, Obama had an 8 hour gap.

ex-OS2

Interestingly, there was no MSM outrage broadcasted 24/7 over it. Actually, there was no media coverage of it at all. To this day we still don’t know what Obama and Hillary were doing the night that four Americans were murdered.

Maybe Obama and the Bitch of Benghazi left Biden in the Situation Room during the Benghazi attack to keep and eye on things while Barack worked on his debate prep and Hillary checked her email while watching YouTube protest videos.

The MSM was sure to snap photos of the Situation Room during the bin laden raid.

Meh, what difference at this point does it make?

OWB

LC, I, too, would probably be so curious that I would be glued to the screen for that first mission. That alone may define why neither of us is president.

There are lost of other things to be doing. So my answer may be that it depends upon what he was doing instead of hanging out with the guys who were actually directing the action, and all the other folks who were just curious about it.

2/17 Air Cav

LC. There were two instances involving the guy that President Trump replaced that come to mind. The first was the special op to get OBL. That was a watershed event and after playing some 15 hands of spades, according to his personal secretary, the guy President Trump replaced went into the situation room and watched some of the live stream. The second, about a year later, was Benghazi, an event that the guy spun madly to deflect criticism for his immense failure as commander in chief. (ex-OS2 covered this nicely.) In terms of import and interest, the raid in Yemen was not in the same neighborhood as the OBL mission or Benghazi. Hell, it wasn’t in the same zip code. Whether President Trump watched live, afterwards, or not at all is neither here nor there. That you would have watched if you were president is neither here nor there either.

Dave Hardin

He is never far, but never near, and always knows what lurks in the minds of men. HONDO

11b-mailclerk

No, the President should not micro-manage missions.

We rightly chastize Johnson for that crap.

Issue the orders. Allow subordinate leaders to do their jobs.

A raid on a platoon of goobers, even a higher HQ platoon, is -not- a big deal. Infantry would call it the daily grind.

I would guess this was the test of “can I delegate, here”. Also of, “is the system in place, and plans, good enough?”

Expect changes.

Just An Old Dog

https://regiehammblog.wordpress.com/2017/02/01/this-hitler-nonsense/ Great Article… I am not an expert on Hitler. But my father is. He toured post-war Germany extensively in 1957 and ’58 as a child performer. And he often recounts the stories. He befriended teenage Lebensborn children (if you don’t know what Lebensborn children are …well …before you post anymore about Hitler you should read about them). He visited an SS widow and got a peek at her husband’s uniform and Luger (that he’d committed suicide with), she had stored in an old trunk, in the attic. These and other intense experiences in Germany sent my father on a life-long quest to understand this sociopath (Hitler) and the country that allowed itself to be dragged into one of the darkest chapters in world history. My dad is a Hitler/Nazi buff the way Indiana Jones’ dad was a Holy Grail buff. As the son of a man with this hobby (one might call obsession) I learned a lot about Hitler and the Third Reich just by osmosis, growing up. My father would weave WWII stories into his sermons. He would talk about new books he was reading on the subject. When I was nine-years-old I bought him a book on the battle of Stalingrad for Christmas. Not a tie or a pair of socks. A book …on the battle …of Stalingrad. Yeah …it was kinda like that. The thing my father and I have often discussed, through the years, is the eye-rolling art of comparing American presidents to Hitler. It is such an absurdity we find it amusing …and frustrating. It’s often just a punch line. Like the Soup Nazi wasn’t really a Nazi. He was just mean. The Nazi part made it funny. You know …over-the-top. Like “grammar Nazi” or “spelling Nazi.” Nobody is really a “Nazi.” It’s our representation of something we consider jarring, strident, intractable and inhumane. But the truth about Nazis isn’t funny at all. It’s bloody and horrible and gut churning. And it involves machine guns and butchery and inhumanity on a scale that takes your breath away. Nobody is really a “soup Nazi” …unless… Read more »

*POW!*, right in the kisser. Good hit, Frankie!

Frankie Cee

As of 0745 hours, this Sunday morning, February 5, 2017, Kyle Barwan rubbed the sleep out of his eyes, and faced a new day in the Polk County, Florida Jail. At least he has a roof over his head, and lots of guys that “want to get to know him better”.

26Limabeans

Crooked nose. Heh. Wonder how that happened.

“Trump’s nominee for Army secretary drops out”

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/02/04/trumps-nominee-for-army-secretary-drops-out.html

“President Donald Trump’s nominee for Army secretary withdrew from consideration for the position on Friday night citing concerns over family businesses.”

“Vincent Viola, an Army veteran and founder of a stock trading firm, told Military Times that he was “deeply honored” to be in consideration for the position. “I appreciate the confidence President Trump showed in me,” Viola said.”

“Defense Secretary Jim Mattis was disappointed but understood and respected Viola’s decision, a Pentagon statement said. Mattis will recommend to Trump another candidate soon, the statement said….”

If President Trump needs his advice, he remains a phone call away. He will most certainly answer the phone.

Eden

🙁 I thought that he was already a done deal.

2/17 Air Cav

Well, he probably consulted with his attys and learned that he would have to divest himself of control of his business or businesses and said, “Well, shit.”

2/17 Air Cav

And in other military news of a sort, in response to President Trump’s concern regarding Iran, Iran flicked a booger on Saturday, test firing a missile. Iran doesn’t get it but they will. Israel has not been dawdling while the guy President Trump replaced was supporting Israel’s enemies and drawing imaginary Red Lines hither and yon. I expect that, before too long, more of Iran’s nuke science guys will blow up and a facility or two as well.

A Proud Infidel®™

Iran and many other ME Nations have and continue to underestimate Israel and I have ZERO sympathy for them every time the Israelis collect their pound of flesh in return.

Audi’s Super Bowl commercial is catching a ton of flak for its message:

One of the best comments that I read for the story was over at Instapundit: https://pjmedia.com/instapundit/256365/#respond

“I really don’t respect Audi owners that much, ’cause they coulda bought a BMW with similar or better performance for about 10% less, and spent the rest on hookers and blow (Or their kid’s college, whatever)”

About once, sometimes twice, a year my eldest brother calls me or I call him. We live many miles apart. Anyway, I just called him and got his voice mail. In a slow and deliberate voice, he recited the number reached and then said, “This is my message: impeach Trump.” What an asshole. I hung up.

Good luck to the officers…as for Marilyn Mosby, she should pay – starting with her license to practice law – for her malicious prosecution of those officers.

Something tells me that this is only the beginning of things for Marilyn Mosby, she initiated her downfall the moment she decided to sell her integrity and her soul for political gain.

Unfortunately, some of you have first-hand experience with burying Veterans. I’m getting my stuff in order for me inevitable departure and I’d like to know whether there is any cost associated with burial in a Veterans Cemetery. Although the plot, marker, and flag are w/o cost, is there a marker installation fee or anything?

ex-OS2

Here is some information 2/17 Air Cav.

http://www.cem.va.gov/cem/burial_benefits/index.asp

2/17 Air Cav

Thanks. It appears there are no hidden costs. I;ll hard copy the instructions and place in my I-don’t-care-where-the -TV’s-remote-control-is-anymore folder.

2/17 Air Cav

Whoa. Burial at sea? I would have thought that available only to water people, but I would have thought wrong. That’s not for me, thanks. I like wading pools. I like showers. That ocean business I leave to others.

26Limabeans

You got fishhooks in your pockets?

2/17 Air Cav

No, but I do have a one-eyed worm with me at all times.

26Limabeans

I figured you would go for the horse drawn caisson at extra cost. Make em cry good and hard.

2/17 Air Cav

Actually, I just did my write-up for my wife. I asked that she and certain others attend a Mass, with or w/o my remains present. No viewing, no hoopla. Then, about a month or so after I am gone, I asked that she spring for a party of friends and family to sawp war stories and have a good time. I want no fanfare. I hate viewings and funerals and I’ll be damned if I want others subjected to mine.

AnotherPat

Glad you are doing this, 2/17 Air Cav.

Have personnel experience about trying to get family members to discuss Will, Burials, Probate,etc.etc.

Sadly, all were in denial. They did not want to talk about it, informed me that I was morbid to discuss it and to drop the subject.

And yet, when some family members died, they came to me for burial and probate. And then arguments started because of disagreements(the deceased refused to get wills).

Family is now split. Still trying to get reimbursed for funeral costs. It has been unpleasant and stressful, but I learned my lesson: I will never do it again (and I never said “I told you so.”)

26Limabeans

Sorry to hear that AP. I’ve been dealing with a similar scenario for many years. I just lost the last NOK and now must redo my durable proxy etc. Never let a relative handle an estate. It will tear the family apart. Hire an attorney.

For 2/17 Air Cav…good for you. Dying intestate leaves a mess. You are fortunate to have someone to discuss it with. My plans are in place. Just me and the honor guard with burial as close to my hero dad as possible.

AnotherPat

26Limabeans:

Thank you.

Agree 100% with everything you wrote. Especially “Hire an attorney”, “Dying intestate leaves a mess” and “good for you” to 2/17 Air Cav.

Salute to you…and Thank You for serving our country.

2/17 Air Cav

For the benefit of others who may not know, the intestate business is neither a battery nor a roadway. It’s a fancy-pants word that means you bought the farm w/o a will. Those who kick off with a will are said to be testate, which has nothing to do with testes. Anyway, wills are good things, even if what you leave behind doesn’t seem to be much. That family heirloom or that flag that draped a certain Veteran’s coffin you may want to go to a particular someone with certainty. It’s true that if you have a spouse and you die intestate, your estate, as it’s called, distribution will be controlled by your state’s statute governing succession rules. But if you keep property in more than one state, it could get dicey. Attys suck. I know. You really don’t need one for most wills. What you need is to check out your state’s wills and estates statutes and see what the req’mts are for a will and filing it. Your local Register of Wills can help you. On the other hand, maybe you think you will live forever or you want to leave others headaches once your gone. In either case, you can forget what I just wrote.

“that flag that draped a certain Veteran’s coffin”

Make sure you fill out the current VA FORM 21-2008 in the presence of the funeral director to make sure that flag goes to whom you choose. Even after doing that my dads flag was taken by a relative and it took an attorney and the VA to get it back in my hands. During that mess I learned about a few other horror stories including one where a flag was torn during a fight over it. Sad. Make your wishes known to those who love you.

When I was on AD, anyone subject to deployment was required to make a will. They do need to be updated from time to time, though, and I probably should update mine. THe basics haven’t changed, but some of it simply isn’t applicable anymore.

Been on a working party all fucking morning. I may rethink my guest list next week for WOT celebration aka ex-OS2 Day.

Pfftt….

2/17 Air Cav

Having received no motion from the TAH Dickweeds to amend the WOT Rules to permit ties for WOT First, the issue is no longer amenable to motion this calendar year. There is, therefore, no allowance for ties for WOT First. The matter may be raised again no sooner than the 2018 TAH Rules Committee Meeting at a date TBD. Adjourned. (Bangs gavel)

Eden. You’re a TAH Dickweed if you claim it and are proud of it. As for your motion, I truly missed it. Sorry. If it’s any consolation, you would have needed a second and third to get it in the rules. And based on the reaction to the proposal, the chances weren’t good. But there’s always next year!
