Weekend Open Thread

| December 20, 2024 | 48 Comments

Tomorrow is winter solstice in the northern hemisphere and Christmas is around the corner. Speaking of which, those in the southern hemisphere have a different feel to their Christmas. Where we see shorter days, they see longer days. Our Christmas lights counter the longer nights in the northern hemisphere. However, in the southern hemisphere, they have both the long days and the Christmas lights… But when the longer days return in the northern hemisphere, the southern hemisphere will have their shorter days without the Christmas lights. Enjoy your weekend!

Hack Stone

Shit! KoB and his band of miscreants continue their vast chicken wing conspiracy against the rightful owner of the First Comment by messing with the WiFi signal at the Fort Belvoir Commissary. Hack gets in the building, and after twenty minutes of trying to link to the “free” WiFi, it finally connects. Then the WOT drops, and it takes a few seconds to open, just enough time for KoB to claim the title in a “free and transparent” competition.

Oh, wise and all knowing Magic 8-Ball, can Hack Stone score a win as to the highly coveted and rarely awarded title of First Commenter for the This Ain’t Hell Weekend Open Thread, or will he be burdened be forced to flee his kingdom in the dead of the night and seek political asylum in Merritt Island as mercenaries in the employ of KoB ransack his collection of vintage Jaguars and designer spandex tuxedos? Magic 8-Ball says…” DENIED! With an Earth Shattering KA-BOOOOM. The King of Battle…THE King of FIRST has completed his escort/provision run mission, drifting back into Fire Base Magnolia and maintain his Throne. In addition to all of the above, KoB managed to get by and see Ms Holly (HOLY) (ht2 ND) Tonsorial Palace Thang to get trimmed and primed ready for his adoring public to join him in snacky stuff and refreshing beverages. While Mr. Stone and Company were flailing away at their F5 keys, The Gun Bunny was enjoying a nice ride thru the countryside having enough time to unload said provisions from the Prime Mover and just so happened to open up his Chromie and WHUMP!!! There it was, a vaunted TAH Friday Weekend Open Thread Post, just a laying there, begging to be claimed..

If any of you Deplorable Garbage are considering a pet this Christmas for the kids, just remember that it is a lifetime commitment when you give them a Vice President of a proud but humble woman owned business. You have to housebreak them, pay court ordered anger management classes, and clothe them in the latest fashions available at Goodwill.

David

I see that many sources are blaming Trump for a potential government shutdown, and he hasn’t even been sworn in. Multiple sources are saying that if the shut down does occur, most likely Joe Snuffy will go unpaid. Have to wonder whether this is a giant ‘screw-you’ gesture from the outgoing Dems? It’s not like they care about the military vote, and if they can get the credulous to believe it IS Trump’s doing, it will throw a few cracks in an otherwise mostly Republican-voting group. Keep an eye on it.

rgr769

Let me show my not shocked face. The effing Progs have been blaming Trump for whatever Congress did or didn’t do for the past four years, when he had no power to force them to do anything.

Hack Stone

Hack Stone was denied the title of First Commenter for The Weekend Open Thread, obviously because of Donald Trump AND Elon Musk.

NHSparky

Amazing how quickly they forget the Xmas shutdown under Clinton, or the one in 2013 under Obama. Nah, those were on Trump too.

A Proud Infidel®™

Funny how Snuffy goes unpaid while the pols live high on the hog completely unworried, and welfare checks? Yeah, they still go out along with the handouts to illegal aliens, shows what the D-rats think of those who want to work for a living!

Hack Stone

You can’t get on an airplane without a government issued photo identification card, and yet unvaccinated “newcomers” are flown around the country on our dime during the “secure border” under the Biden-Harris Administration.

Work, work, work, work, work. Thought I’d never get done and get here. Way too late for the coveted FIRST, but a tip o’ the cap to the King of Battle for achieving two in a row.

The week’s trivia is incoming, as usual. David, the correction regarding Honey West vice Hazel is in next week’s edition; by the time I got your note, this week’s column had already been sent.

DID YOU KNOW…?
Does an animal exist which actually eats its own brain every year?

This is our last visit together before Christmas (and Hanukkah and Kwanzaa), so I would like to take this moment to wish you a very, very happy celebration!

I hope the event you celebrate is full of fun, love, life and happiness. It should be … you sure do deserve it. You put up with me every week.

And be here next week, for our final journey together for 2024. (I make it sound like this is all coming to an end, but you know better than that! I plan to be here for a long, long time to come.)

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and Happy Kwanzaa! And enjoy the trivia, too!

Did you know …

… 1945 was a very bad year for the city of Hiroshima, Japan? One month after the first atomic bomb used in war was exploded over the city, in August of 1945 – a blast which killed 135,000 people – the city was hit by a massive typhoon. Another 2,000 people were killed.

Commissioner Wretched

… there just might be something to those old good-luck charms? When President William McKinley (1843-1901) was visiting the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, on September 6, 1901, he was wearing his trademark red carnation, which he usually wore for good luck. While greeting the crowd, McKinley smilingly gave the carnation to a 12-year-old girl, saying, “I must give this flower to another little flower.” Minutes later, McKinley was shot by anarchist Leon Czolgosz (1873-1901). The president died of his wounds eight days later. (Must remember to replenish my stock of red carnations!)

… one of the most endearing characters in the movie Cast Away was created by accident? Screen writer William Broyles, Jr. (born 1944) based his story on the classic Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe (1660-1731), updated for the modern world. To do research, Broyles stranded himself on an isolated California beach for one week. During that week, a volleyball washed up on shore, and the idea for the character of “Wilson” was born. The volleyball became the boon companion of the character played by Tom Hanks (born 1956), and Hanks himself said that Wilson is probably how his character kept his sanity during his isolation. From a storytelling point of view, Wilson also allowed Hanks’ character to have dialogue during the scenes on the island. (Hey, we all talk to ourselves, don’t we?)

… blonde hair is seen as a strength in fairy tales? In such stories as Rapunzel, Rumplestiltskin, Cinderella, and of course Goldilocks (my spell checker just went crazy), the female protagonist is universally shown as having blonde hair, denoting strength, untarnished beauty, youth, and indestructibility. By comparison, brunette or dark red hair on women in those stories is associated with vice and evil. (There’s a message here, but I’m not too sure what it is.)

Hat tip to Eggs for the pic.

So… Wilson was a Navy veteran?

I have a brass letter opener from the 1901 Expo that was gifted to me years ago. Lucky to have it and use it everyday.

It Tom would cast away his politics and just entertain us with decent movies, that’d be great.

“Bring me that one…the sultry one…the one with fire in her eyes…and her hair.” And that’s no fairy tale.

… a book by one of the worst humans in history made money for 70 years after his death? Mein Kampf, written by Adolf Hitler (1889-1945), was a best-seller in Germany in the period before and during World War II, when possession was all but mandatory. After Hitler’s death, the royalties from the book – yes, people still bought it and they still buy it today – went to the government of the German state of Bavaria. Mein Kampf entered public domain in 2015, seventy years after Hitler’s death, and the state of Bavaria no longer receives any profits from the book. (Would you want the money? Money is money, I know, but I wouldn’t.)

… a tiny animal exists that eats its own brain each year? Bear with me a moment. The common shrew, a cute little insectivore that grows up to four inches long, has a real problem every time winter comes along – it doesn’t hibernate, but it’s so small it would have a hard time finding enough food to stay alive. So the shrew does something incredible – as winter approaches, the shrew will eat up to eight times its own weight, then it will live off the fat during the cold months. Once the fat is gone, however, the shrew still has to survive, so it actually digests part of its brain. In a process called Dehnel’s effect, the shrew “consumes” about a quarter of its brain mass to stay alive. The wildest part? Once the winter fast is over, the brain regenerates itself, and the animal’s skills and memory are unaffected. (And then it goes into politics.)

… a well-known musician has had his entire genome analyzed by scientists? Singer Ozzy Osbourne (born 1948) has been examined thusly for one primary reason – to determine how he survived decades of extreme drug abuse. (Just lucky, I guess.)

Commissioner Wretched

… the idea that we are not alone in the universe is not new? Ancient writings from Greece indicate that they considered the idea that there are other intelligent life forms in the universe. (I’m not all that convinced that we have intelligent life on this planet.)

… spring showers take place away from Earth? So far as we know, they also take place on Saturn’s largest moon, Titan. To be sure, they’re not like spring showers here – on Titan, it’s bitterly cold, and what falls in the showers isn’t water, but liquid methane. But they do take place during “spring” on that far distant world. (Yes, but do “they bring the flowers that bloom in May”?)

… the longest possible walking distance in the world is about 14,000 miles? One can, if one is inclined to do so, walk from the town of Magadan, Russia, to Cape Town, South Africa, without having to resort to flying or sailing. (It’ll take a while, but think of the exercise you’ll get!)

… Lego™ toys and tattoos have something in common? The ink in tattoos and the plastic that makes up the popular toy Lego blocks are both made from the same material – acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. (No, I don’t know how to pronounce that.)

Now … you know!

A Proud Infidel®™

You forgot JOYOUS FESTIVUS!!!

KoB

It is good to be…The King, CW. Not only The King of Battle (We Live to Serve The Guns) but also to be THE King of FIRST. Fridays are always a double celebration with the Vaunted TAH Friday Weekend Open Thread AND your Trivia Column. You keep ’em coming and we’ll keep reading (and correcting 😉 ) them.

The ToyotaThon is a more real Holiday than Kwanzaa. A most Merry Christmas to you and your Feline Furbabies. Try to keep them out of the tree.

Not such a “Divine Wind” for Hiroshima, huh.

Sapper3307

Ahh the start of Christmas Break for our kids

Remember when visiting Arizona
you pass on the right and not the left like you do in other states and in most of the world

That’s all folks

They musta larn’t dat from Texas. 40 some years ago when I was stationed in Texas, I learned it wasn’t the break down lane that was on the right side of the road; it was the alternate passing lane.

Oh by the way, thinking of Texas, has anyone heard from Heavy Chevy lately? I’m just curious what number ex-wife the cheese eater up to by now.

SFC D

Gotta major problem with Texas and New Mexico drivers going putt-putt in the zoom-zoom lane on I-10. C’mon man, we got enough of our own asshats doing that, please don’t contribute!

Graybeard

Present & uncountable-ish.

Just returned from letting 2nd grandson take his FIRST (h/t K0B) drive on the hardtop & at speed to his other grandparents. He mostly kept it between the lines. He’s a cautious young man, so not too worried about him becoming reckless (unlike his sister, who is known for having a heavy foot).

Beautiful day in the GB Compound AO. Y’all have a great weekend.

Graybeard

…aaaaand Mrs. GB and I are batting 1000 on our Christmas parties this year.
Missed the choir and Sunday School parties being sick, then didn’t find out until 1900 that the boss was having one at his house and forgot to tell us.
(To be fair, he forgets to tell folks things often until the last minute. How his wife deals with this is sometimes entertaining. Great guy, really, but often a knucklehead about anything outside the business.)

As long as the kids and grands are all well and can come to the family Christmas Eve shingding, it’s all fine.

Amateur Historian

Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a good week. So, I finally moved out out of my old place and I’m settling into the new one, that’s in the South Springs. The move only took a day and a half and I’m just happy to not be under the stress of it anymore. Just in time for me to get festive. Here’s some acapella Christmas music:

Fyrfighter

South Springs Where AH?

Amateur Historian

Near the airport. Milton E. Proby.

Fyrfighter

Ahh, damn, forgot you were a neighbor. Should have asked, I’d have been happy to help

Amateur Historian

Thank you, I appreciate that. But I had all the help I needed.

Fyrfighter

If ya want, have Ed put ya in touch with me, we can grab a beer or coffee sometime

Amateur Historian

I might want to do that in the future, but my car has a blown head gasket that would need to get fixed first. I’ve been relying on friends and family to get around.

Amateur Historian

And this is an interesting topic about Christianity, warfare, and the Right to Self-defense:

Not only approves, but in some cases commands. But in very specific and limited circumstances.
