Steve Slaton – The ‘He Said, She Said’ of Vietnam Service

| June 10, 2024 | 179 Comments

The good folks at Military Phony and the Guardians of the Green Beret give us their work on this fella – Steve Slaton – who is running for Arizona State Representative for LD-7. Steven Hawthorne Slaton comes to us from Show Low, Arizona. At the time of this writing, June 2024, Slaton is 69 years old. Slaton emphasizes his military service in the Army for his campaign.

On Slaton’s official campaign site, he claims to have been honorably discharged and to have been a helicopter co-pilot in Vietnam.

SOURCE: https://www.steveslatonaz.com/about/

Also, on Slaton’s campaign website, there is a discrepancy of a claim of being an Army veteran, but on previous iterations, it claimed he was a retired member of the Army. We believe this change came about after attention was drawn to this claim.

The “retired” claim was present in May 2023, but by May 2024 it changed over to say “veteran.”

You can see for yourself in the WayBack Machine / Internet Archive: https://web.archive.org/web/20230517201712/https://steveslatonaz.com/about/

VIETNAM
Slaton posed for a photo with his pickup truck. It had a sticker of a helicopter over a medal for Vietnam.

HE SAID – SHE SAID
Here’s where things start going sideways. The media, other candidates, and stolen valor folks called out Slaton on some of these claims. Slaton presented a copy of his DD-214, but it differed from what people obtained from the National Personnel Records Center. Slaton holds his version, and the Official Version is on the right.

Notice there are more lines under ‘DECORATIONS and MEDALS,’ then a few more lines under the ‘REMARKS’ section. Although blurry, you can see a difference in the number of lines.

Here are the two versions side-by-side. Notice the “4” under the ‘Nixon Vietnamese Program 1974,’ it is different than the “4” in the rest of the document.

A local newspaper in Arizona called Slaton out on his claims.

https://mountaindailystar.com/az-house-candidate-misrepresented-military-service-locals-sound-alarm/

Things got a little messy at this point – Slaton wrote a “manifesto” where he disputed each claim in the article. Below are some excerpts:

Steve Slaton’s Rebuttal to Article

In addition, he suggested that the Guardians of the Green Beret may have altered the results that they got back from the NPRC. Military Phony and This Ain’t Hell / Valor Guardians have worked with the Guardians of the Green Beret over many years and find that they adhere to very high standards. We find the claim that they altered records completely implausible. This was discussed on their YouTube channel, complete with a phone call to Slaton.

SOURCE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?

This Ain’t Hell / Valor Guardians encourages everyone to just send for Slaton’s official military records and observe them firsthand. Military Phony did this and found that the Guardians of the Green Beret were 100% credible, which was no surprise.

. . . . .

ACTIONS CONDUCTED BY MILITARY PHONIES

Steven Hawthorne Slaton’s military records were ordered through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. We filed with the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) to account for his service claims.

NOTE: These are third-party records but from a trusted source. We post these results to complement what the NPRC provided us. As always, we obtain our own results to establish a clean chain of custody.

In addition, the Guardians of the Green Beret sent the DD-214 supplied by Slaton and asked them if it differed from what they had on file. This was their answer:

. . . . .

DISCUSSION and SUMMARY

LENGTH OF SERVICE
The length of active duty service was three (3) years but did not support a retirement claim. There is always a chance that it could be a medical retirement, but this is a non-issue since the claim was changed on Slaton’s website.

RANK
Slaton was discharged from the Army as a SGT (E-5). This is also a non-issue.

VIETNAM
No medals in Slaton’s record would support a claim of being in Vietnam.

COMBAT and AWARDS
Nothing to designate Slaton as being in Vietnam or combat.

SUMMARY
If Steve Slaton has used any of these claims to gain anything of value, he could be in violation of the Stolen Valor Act.

Seems like perfectly good service…
Then he comes home and takes a giant shit on it and ruins everything.

Amateur Historian

Word!

Sapper3307

We found that same photo during DS in Iraqi positions telling them who we were and not to surrender.

USMCMSgt (Ret)

One Iraqi who surrendered to us was wearing a t-shirt (from 1989) that read the Cincinnati Bengals were the Super Bowl XXIII Champions.

(The 49ers won that year.)

tshe

When the Giant’s beat the Patriots in Superbowl XLII, someone said that there will be kids running around on some Caribbean Island with Patriots 19-0 t-shirts on.

Hack Stone

Hack Stone has a garage full of t-shirts and red hats from a proud but humble woman owned business that sells outdated overpriced software to the Federal Government. Can’t understand why no one wants them, they were made with best asbestos available on the market.

https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/29884/what-happens-losing-teams-championship-shirts#:~:text=But%20what%20happens%20to%20the%20losing%20team%E2%80%99s%20clothing%3F,be%20held%20in%20inventory%20locations%20across%20the%20U.S.

Jimbo

T-Shirts are printed for both teams winning. Because due to not knowing who the winner will be and have the shirts ready when you leave the event. Then the loser shirts are sent over seas to some country that doesn’t know the difference. You probably paid for both shirts and they donated the shirt and got a tax write off too. I read that some place awhile back.

HT3

Always a classic…

Next year is our year!

Nobody circles the wagons like the Buffalo Bills!

Then again, no one allows wagons on the gridiron. Damn. No wonder we always lose.

Well, Senator Blumenthal (D) claimed he was a Marine Vietnam Combat Veteran despite never having set foot in the country.

He still is in office today.

So…it must be contagious PTSD that alters memory of Vietnam when it helps politically…

Anonymous

Jane Fonda had more time in ‘Nam.

Hate_me

I’ll take a stolen valor congressman over one who thinks an island will capsize if we build a base on it.

Daisy Cutter

Things got hairy in ‘Qritran Proviendance’ [sic] – as its name suggests, many qrit and ran. We lost a lot of good men that day.

5JC

If it was anything like “Queer Riverdance” the struggle is real. It was so hairy I’ll never be able to burn it from my memory.

It’s the closest thing to Macho Grande I ever experienced.

Green Thumb

I heard that “Queer Riverdance” will be performing at All-Points Logistics in Merritt Island, Florida in the near future.

RCAF-CHAIRBORNE

Queer Riverdance?
That’s the most redundant name I have ever heard

Hate_me

Pretty sure Michael Flatley has his pick of all the hefty Hermoines at every Irish festival he deigns to attend.

26Limabeans

Not just the numeral “4” but also lower case “r”.

He seems a bit young for Viet of the Nam.

Jimbo

I think the Youngest Vietnam Vets age would be 66 today. If you were born in 1958 joined the service in Jan. 1975, finished basic training and a short school, you could have made it overseas for the Saigon evacuation in April 1975. On a Navy ship? or short schooling of some type. I did meet a 17 yr old at Udorn, but I don’t know if they would send someone without a little OJT first.

Daisy Cutter

I’ve logged many hours in an ‘attach helicopper’ [sic] so I find Slaton’s claims credible.

Marine0331

As a member of a helicopter assault unit (Lima Co, 3/8) back in the early 1980’s I too logged many hours in CH 46 and CH 53 birds, BUT, only as human cargo!

USAFRetired

I thought the proper term was self-loading baggage?

Marine0331

lol, good one!!!!

I was very attached to my helicopter.

The only dispute I have about my military service is how much pussy I got. I seem to remember more, but I’m sure its NOT as much as I remember…

Big difference between serving in Korea and in Vietnam. You can’t get those two confused. At the bar he talked ‘Nam stories for years, but when he ran for office all his bullshit stories came out.

Green Thumb

Don’t sweat it.

Ranger Burrell got no pussy either.

akpual

He ain’t got no yo yo.

Hack Stone

Somewhere out there, Crybaby Burrell has a blog listing all of the people who posted “nasty” things about him on TAH. Hack Stone considers it an honor to be named among the select few (dozen).

Any chance that this guy will have a sock puppet show up and defend his claims of service in Viet of The Nam?

Daisy Cutter

We few, we happy few…

What shoud we be listening for? “Sockpuppet. Clean up on Aisle 4!”

KoB

Sockpuppet showed up last night in the MP initial post on the embellishing, lying POS Steven Hawthorne Slaton. Possibly his dependopotomus, same last name. The pile on has already started…Bless her heart. Go take a look see.

5JC

Love it’s imaginary whataboutism about supposed fake claims of an actual combat vet.

Also a fan of the dd214 T-Shirt. Irony can be a mofo.

1000004580
rgr769

Welp, he does have a legit DD214 somewhere. It just shows he did honorable service in Korea. Too bad he had to shit on it with his combat in the Viet of the Nam lies. He didn’t get to be operational with a Cobra unit until January 1974 in Korea. By then all Army combat aviation units were gone from Vietnam. All combat for the Army had ended early the prior year on January 15, 1973. That was likely when he was still in high school. He did not enlist until June 29, 1973.

MarineDad61

KoB,
Screenshot now at the bottom.
You beat everyone here to the mention,
so here it is again.

SFC D

Not much effort on her part. I’m very disappointed.

rgr769

Weak sauce, indeed. Too bad we can’t entice Karen to come here. Even as a sock-puppet it would be sweet indeed. We might even break 200 on the comments.

Jimbo

You can’t be issued a Vietnam Campaign medal and an Expeditionary medal for Vietnam. You have to choose which one you would like to receive. During his time Only operation Frequent Wind occured. You then get a letter from NPRC that shows they contacted you and what your choice was. It doesn’t show any service in SEA.

Daisy Cutter

I had tacos and chili last night, so I participated in Operation Frequent Wind.

Jimbo

Be careful. Could be a total blow out!💨

Green Thumb

And gas the locals….

Marine0331

I was there too!! But that operation seems to last forever. Seems I’ve been a part of that operation since long before I was a Marine!

Hack Stone

First time Hack Stone ever had a burrito was during boot camp at Parris Island in the summer of 1981. Hell, we didn’t have a Taco Bell in my town.

Daisy Cutter

Real men eat gas station burritos.

SFC D

And truck stop sushi.

Jimbo

Truck stop Sushi…my god, how could you do that!

Steve1371

Love that gas station quinine !

Marine0331

Hack, I was on the island too summer of 1981. Platoon 2063. I recall taking too many pieces of corn bread one day at evening chow thinking it was sheet cake. My buddy said he would take, and Mazenko saw him reach over to my tray and made him do bends and motherfuckers for “stealing another recruits food.” LOL Then, I had to shove all three pieces into my piehole for being a pig. Three pieces of very dry cornbread! Mazenko was sadistic as hell, but I have so much respect for him to this day! It’s hilarious now!!

Hack Stone

Platoon 1060. We had Private Murray, who tried to walk off of Parris Island. Spoiler Alert… he didn’t make it.

5JC

He couldn’t have got one anyway, since he was still state side when they stopped issuing them.

5JC

When I was nine my dad got a UH1 pilot at his unit to let me sit in the front seat of it during take off and a little spin around the airfield. Little did I know at the time I was forever after a co-pilot.

Green Thumb

Much like when Joeseph Cryer sat and spun on Phildo’s dildo.

He has been a little light ever since….

Hack Stone

That dog don’t hunt.

Because Joe Cryer killed it.

Too soon? 🥴

26Limabeans

A couple of years before my dad passed I got to fly with him
aboard the Collings Foundation restored B-17G “909”.
My dad was a gunner/togglier according to his DD-214.
I was just a passenger along for the ride and the education.

5JC

My father was never a pilot. Believe it or not back in the 70s they used to do family days. Back then they would let the family members take a flight. I was convinced I was going to be a helicopter pilot until I started wearing glasses.

I don’t recall exactly when, But there was an incident in the ’80s (maybe late ’70s?) that put a stop to all that.

Jimbo

Now days the USAF uses the Civil Air Patrol to do O-Rides (Orientation). This is one of the best things they do for young people interested in flying. If they join CAP as a cadet they can get flight training paid for by the USAF and eventually get licensed. There is a shortage of pilots and getting young people interested in flying this way is one of the great things the Air Force does.

rgr769

Yeah, co-pilot my ass. He may have occasionally flown in that second seat, but he did not fly the helo. I got some brief helo stick time in the Viet of the Nam, as I had flight training in the ROTC flight program (40 hours). A LOH pilot tried to teach me how to hover over my Ranger Co. helo pad. It lasted for about 40 seconds, before I was all over the place and he took back control. No way a pilot let him do anything but sit in that seat. Crew chief means he was in charge of the maintenance of the aircraft. He was not trained as a co-pilot with 12 weeks of training in helicopter maintenance and repair.

Army-Air Force

Wouldn’t he be the gunner, not a “co-pilot?” And I’m sure those guys were either Officers or WO’s.

rgr769

No, the gunner in the front seat was normally another trained pilot, usually a junior warrant. He had a set of controls so he could take over if the pilot was wounded. The Cobra was like a Huey in that there were always two trained pilots in those seats. The enlisted crew chief rode in the back, usually as a door gunner. In the case of the Cobra, the aircraft crew chief stayed in the rear with the gear. Now since they weren’t in combat, it is very likely our hero got to occasionally ride in that front seat and he may have gotten some stick time. I was on a courier Huey flight from Chu Lai to Da Nang once, and the pilot had me fly about a third of the trip when I mentioned I had fixed wing training.

Jimbo

My son was a super fan of Bob The Builder, One day I let him ride in the Komatsu 350 excavator. It was the best day of his life to pull the levers and swing the big bucket around. Great Father Son Time.

I have never understood why these idiots need to say they were in Nam when it’s so easy to see the phonyness in the “proof” he presents. For two of my sons that are or were SF – Kiss My Irish Ass!! And for me…as well…11th ACR 67-68, Viet Nam, Tet Offensive.

It’s funny how many people make false claims about combat service, or even questionable claims about military service that are hard to back up. Site like TAH/VG have networked and mastered the methods to gather proof of service or evidence of lies. One would think that anyone running for a political office at any level would think twice before embellishing about what they actually did.

Besides getting the “Red-Blooded ‘Merican, By God!” vote of those who would blindly vote for anything MAGA and twice if their vote goes to a combat veteran, what does his purported service have to do with his constituency? Let’s say he’s a legit Cobra co-pilot who spent a little time in Vietnam. How’s that affect his ability to represent those in his district?

I used to entertain running for some local office, be it Sheriff or the school board (I’d be almost guaranteed to fail, not being from this area originally). If I were to, of course my military service would be mentioned–it was over two decades of my life and largely shaped both my politics and the way I view society–but first and foremost would be what my platform was, how I planned to better the community and the system, and everything in between. I mean, thanks for your service, but we see time and again that military service at even the highest ranks doesn’t equate to ethics, integrity, honesty, or even lawfulness. Sometimes, it’s just the opposite, as some seek to use their time in uniform as a scapegoat or excuse for their actions.

David

You are assuming the average voter educates themselves about the candidates past D and R. It’s a rare one who does. Issues? Usually a hot-button like guns or abortion. I’s guess that cover 99.9% of voters right there.

5JC

All else equal I’m going to vote for the vet over the non vet every time. If it’s a legit combat vet I will probably swing that way, again, all else equal.

Will he, her, them be a better representative? Probably. It tells me they at least once in their life, they made a serious commitment to something greater than themselves. If you go off to play in the sandbox, it gives you a unique perspective on what it means to have somebody else’s life in your hands and you in theirs. These kinds of experiences tend to change people, most often for the better.

People can get these kind of experiences other ways; but it won’t necessarily be something that I can identify with. It doesn’t mean that whoever doesn’t serve isn’t a good person, I know lots of great people that never served a day in the military. But they are going to have to show me that they care about something other than themselves if they want to be a leader in a Republic.

Someone who lies about military service on the other hand is immediately gone. It’s dishonest, narcissistic and disrespectful. We already have enough dishonest, narcissistic and disrespectful people running the country.

Hack Stone

All else equal I’m going to vote for the vet over the non vet every time. If it’s a legit combat vet I will probably swing that way, again, all else equal.

Kind of with you there, but being a Veteran is not a free pass. Hack Stone served with a few individuals who would only get Hack’s vote if he was running for Queen of The Cell Block. The greatest satisfaction Hack had in the past year was when he went on Al Gore’s Amazing Internet and put in the name of the SNCOIC of the Recruiting Office Hack was assigned to, and up popped Gunnery Sergeant Dickhead’s mug shot for violating a restraining order. And despite his profile on Linked In, he did not retire from the Corps, they tossed his lying ass out on the street with no pension.

rgr769

His opponent, also a Republican, is a Desert Storm combat vet tank commander. So, I guess our hero decided he had to up his game from being a helo wrencher for two and a half years.

5JC

With a BSM to boot.

Forest Bondurant

Once certainty in all this is Steve Slayton is a liar and a fraud.

Perfect candidate to hold political office.

Cocksucker.

5JC

If he is going to be making up stories, he needs to have a D after his name. The media will never check.

Forest Bondurant

To add: The Bell AH-1 Cobra (and its modern variants) are crewed by a pilot (rear seat) and a weapons officer (front seat). There isn’t a “co-pilot” as Slayton claims.

Daisy Cutter

I tried following this story about Steve Slaton with other newspaper articles. Some have suggested that the AH-1G Cobra Attack Helicopter did not have a unit in Vietnam at the time he claimed it was there. I cannot confirm or deny.

Jimbo

I was just reading that in a local Arizona newspaper, that unit was in Korea having left Vietnam in mid 1972.

rgr769

That would make since because there was virtually no need for them at that point. All US units had ceased offensive operations at that point.

Green Thumb

The unit was in his mind.

rgr769

I can confirm that there were many Cobras in Vietnam. I put in LZ preps with them for LRRP team insertions in 1971. But since all ground combat operations ceased by January 15, 1973, over five months before he enlisted, attended basic and them 3 months of mechanic school. I doubt there were any Cobra units left in Vietnam when he was outside CONUS. Unlike a Huey, a Cobra only has one function, striking targets on the ground.

KoB

Sure hope the sock puppet shows up here attempting to defend this embellishing POS. We haven’t had a new chew toy in a long time.

No sock puppets yet. But apparently his wife showed up in the comments over at Military Phony to defend his bogus claims.

Tallywhagger

Back in those days I thought that there was a difference between a Specialist and a hard stripe. His 214 shows SP5.

Slayton was born in February 15, 1955. The last military unit left Vietnam on March 29, 1973. Slayton’s service began on Jun 29, 1973.

Basic training was six weeks, AIT was 12 weeks?

Sounds like Steve Slayton may be a lying son-of-a-bitch and a Blumenthal wannabe.

Jimbo

They issued VSM or Expeditionary medal: Vietnam for Operation Frequent Wind April 29 &30 1975. The evacuation of Saigon. All operations ceased in Vietnam on May 15, 1975. Which included the Mayquez Incident (May 13,14,15, 1975 on the Island of Koh Tang, Cambodia. Which is considered the last battle to take place during the Vietnam War. The Last 3 people killed during the Vietnam war occurred on Koh Tang. 3 Marines got left behind during the operation and were found by the Kehmer Forces and executed. Slaton was state side during that time too.

jeff LPH 3 63-66

My Old ship USS Okinawa LPH 3 was involved in a couple of the evacuations. I left in 1966 and missed Viet-nam. Over a 100 crew members have an agent orange problem that was in the drinking water that was pumped the ship while she was anchored in Danag Harbor.

Jimbo

At least the government has come forward and acknowledged that there are many more places that got sprayed than Vietnam. And that the ships in the area were serving contaminated water to the troops. AO has ruined many lives.

Steve1371

My best friend Bub was a dog handler stationed at Camp Carter in Da Nang. His unit patrolled the air fields I believe at Marble Mtn. He died of cancer many years ago and the VA would not honor his claim.

MarineDad61

Phony Rambo tales and unearned medals.
Where have we all seen that before?

5JC

Everywhere. Let us never forget that twice as many people claimed to have served in Vietnam, then actually did.

rgr769

Plus, the VA at some point years ago said that they had 13,000 veterans claiming they were POW’s.

Jimbo

WOW! I thought there was something like 500 POW’s. I hope the VA started some verification.

rgr769

There is a list of every POW captured, it is online. But the VA is too lazy to check. We had a fellow who posted here that had a brother who was collecting a full VA pension based upon his phony POW claim. He was a dental technician who only served in Okinawa. He was reported to the VA; it did nothing. He was still collecting when our commenter passed away.

Jimbo

I have only met one phony vet, he had claimed he was a marine. And the only survivor of a battle in Iraq. I tried to help him get help from the VA. He played games with his employer pretending to attend medical appointments and getting paid for his time at the doctor. When his employer found out he had never served. He was terminated, then moved away to scam someone else. I’m more cautious now when someone tells me their story. I try not to give any info that could help them further a story and play dum now. I felt betrayed. I know his first name: Ray. I’m a good friend of his past employer and I should pursue this ass.

SFC D

OK Arizona, you know what to do. Spread the word, this guy needs to be publicly humiliated. Not my legislative district, but it’s the same area that gave us Jeff Flake. Time to break the cycle and crush this asshat.

Forest Bondurant

^^^ Yep.

A few more observations:

Steve “The Guy Who Needs to Slow His Roll in Show Low” Slayton’s dates of service are 29 June 1973 to 28 June 1976.

(I can’t tell if he changed the dates of service on the DD 214 he presented versus the one provided by the NPRC.)

It appears the 128th Aviation Company was transferred to Korea (most likely Camp Page, located in Chuncheon (Kangwon Province), South Korea – not to be mistaken for “Qritran” Province).

Slaton first claimed, “I never said I patrolled the Vietnam DMZ! That was in Korea! It was in Qritran [sic] Priviendance [sic]”. As far as DMZs go, he conflates the 38th Parallel in Korea with the 17th Parallel in Vietnam.

He goes on to claim, “I was in Veitnam [sic] on February 1974 to May 1974 in Marble Mountain Danang” – except he didn’t enter service until 29 June 1973.

The U.S. Army transferred the Marble Mountain Air Facility (which is in the Quang Nam Province, not “Qritran” Province) to the Republic of Vietnam Air Force in August 1972 – still before he entered service

Of the many priorities listed on his campaign page, he also claims to “Protect Our Communities” by “Minimum Sentencing for Serious Crime, including Child Molestation, Rape, False Claims, Home Invasions, and Mortgage Fraud.”

Who else thinks that embellishing military service, lying while running for political office, and altering official documents fall into the ‘False Claims’ category?

Not only does he suck at telling the truth and spelling, but he also sucks at math, history, geography, keeping facts straight, reading a calendar/telling time, and running for political office.

Jimbo

Hard to keep all those lies in order. His politics are not that of a conservative. More of a douche bag.

26Limabeans

“He goes on to claim, “I was in Veitnam [sic] on February 1974 to May 1974 in Marble Mountain Danang” – except he didn’t enter service until 29 June 1973”

I recently lost a close friend fellow vet that was a helicopter
mechanic at the Marble mountain air facility in 68-69.
If he were here today reading this his head would explode.
Marble Mountain is at the south end of China beach.
At the north end is Monkey mountain and at it’s base, the
95th evacuation hospital of the tv series “China Beach”
I’m surprised Slaton didn’t drag them into his BS.

rgr769

Your geography is correct. I was there in 1971. I was pulled through some trees on top of Monkey Mountain in a STABO rig training op. I have been in the evac hospital checking on one of my WIA’s, and flown over Marble Mountain multiple times.

26Limabeans

Monkey Mountain was crawling with “rock apes”
but no actual monkeys. They would set off the
trip flares and get caught in the wire screaming,
scaring the shit out of everyone on guard duty.
You’re lucky one of them didn’t grab you as you
went through the trees.

Hack Stone

Not only does he suck at telling the truth and spelling, but he also sucks at math, history, geography, keeping facts straight, reading a calendar/telling time, and running for political office.

But he makes a killer souffle.

SFC D

How’s his quiche?

5JC

Too much “secret sauce” in it. He says it’s egg whites but I’m not sure.

Hack Stone

Hard to believe that this guy is legitimate candidate given his inability to post a coherent rebuttal, but then Hack gazes upon Maxine Waters, Hank Johnson, Sheila Jackson Lee, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and concluded that Congress is nothing but a Special Needs Jobs Program for those not qualified to clean the restrooms in Federal Courthouses.

rgr769

You forgot Mazzie Hirono. The dumbest human they have ever found in Hawaii.

5JC

IDK, we had a judge around here that was stealing money from disabled people and children. He now cleans the courthouse he used to sit on the bench in and does a pretty decent job.

Forest Bondurant

I suspect a vast majority of politicians were fetal alcohol syndrome babies, and by natural consequence, cannot respond coherently or make sense of facts.

3rdOps

128th AHC – Uijeongbu – probably Camp LaGuardia
The Korean tour all clicks in….but the VN deployment
is an outlyer.

Tropic Thunder apropos once again:

Green Thumb

Steve Slaton does not know what it is called, he just knows the sound it makes when it plugs him in his two-hole.

Green Thumb

What a turd.

He can use that mechanic training to work all of All-Points Logistics company cars.

That would save The False Commander “Phony” Phil Monkress (CEO of All-Points Logistics) tons of cash which he could then just pocket himself.

26Limabeans

Phony Vietnam service medal but no Vietnam campaign medal?
I thought the two went together and if he was that late in the
war would have three bronze campaign stars on it.
And why no Air Medal if he was such a badass from above?

26Limabeans

I’m not seeing anything punny yet Jeff so stick around.

If Bernath had a co-pilot….

Tallywhagger

He would have stolen his money, glory and sued him, too.

rgr769

They do come together for anyone who was on the ground. The green one (campaign medal) has the ’60 device and the service medal has the campaign stars for each military campaign you were present for during your tour. My RVN Service Medal only has two stars, even though my tour lasted fifteen months due to a three-month extension.

Jimbo

The green campaign medal required a certain amount of time. Like 30 or 90 days in Vietnam or something along that line. VSM only required service in theater.

timactual

The campaign medal was actually a Vietnamese award. “for service performed in Vietnam from 1 March 1961 to 28 March 1973, inclusive”, six months for Americans.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_Campaign_Medal

timactual

Only two seats on a Cobra, and neither is for a crew chief or mechanic. Crew chiefs did fly, as a door gunner, on UH-1 “Hueys”, aka “slicks”.

Holy Moly, A stolen valor/phony post on a Monday morning. Been a long time since we had a phony at the TAH starting gate in a one phony race…I should go to the $100.00 dollar window for the one phony race and win. worked for Lou Costello.

If nothing else proves him to be a liar, his claim to have been a AH1-G crew chief/co-pilot does. The US Army hasn’t had enlisted pilots since WW2.

rgr769

C’mon man, he likely got a ride in that second seat. But the pilot certainly cautioned him not to touch the controls.

Amateur Historian

Wish it had an ejection seat for the POS.

26Limabeans

He should have the Air Medal listed with the numeral 0.

Jimbo

Slayton’s Record
Air medal for downing and aircraft -0
for 25 combat flights -0
100 non combat flights-0
it all adds up to ZERO.

JustALurkinAround

He does. It’s in Roman Numeral form.

Jimbo

Spot on!

JustALurkinAround

I asked my friend, Billy Ray, who saw action EVERYWHERE in RVN, and he said he’s never heard of this dude.

I am quite sure that Daniel Bernath has far more feet-on-the-ground time in Vietnam than Steve Slaton. After all, “Crash” Bernath DID go there on a vacation!

MarineDad61

Over at MP, just over 24 hours ago …

Another Slaton shows up, claims “HIT JOB”,
then claims ANOTHER candidate, Walter Blackman, is (also) a phony.

MP screenshot here.

I suspect that Karen is his wife. I suppose Blackman is the retired SFC that is running against him. Well, if Blackman is falsely claiming a Silver Star, that would be easy to verify, since there is a database with all the Silver Star recipients. That would be our second phony against phony election since that one with the two clowns running for sheriff.

rgr769

Blackman served as a tank commander in Desert Storm and was awarded a Bronze Star. In researching him, I don’t see any mention of a Silver Star. He is retired with 21 years of service.

5JC

She made that b******* up.

Kristie B

Walt served in Fallujah and that is where he received his bronze star. He never claimed a silver star. Gardians already checked him out, so did stolen valor, and the reporter Molly Ottman. He was with 2-63 out of Vilseck Germany in Iraq 2004 to to 2005. He was in Kosovo, and he also served in Afghanistan 2013 to 2014. He has other deployments however those are the main ones.

SFC D

Welcome to our little corner of the internet, Kristie. It looks like you’re gonna fit in quite well!

Kristie B

Thank you!

Amateur Historian

Douchebag.

Also, wouldn’t being elected to office be considered gaining something of value, thus a violation of the Stolen Valor Act?

timactual

Just using the form Slaton provided, he entered the Army in June of 1973, several months after the last US soldier left according to the Paris peace accords. That also explains why he did not receive the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_Campaign_Medal

Not just a phony, but a dumb phony.

SinGar6

AZ voter here…Dumb phony Slaton also attempted to take out our only honest local reporter, the one who broke the Slaton story. We got her back if she’s reading this!

Crap, in the summer of 1981 (I was 14 at the time), we were stationed at Homestead AFB, FL at the time. My dad was Production Super (Aircraft Maintenance). The Wing King’s (Wing Commander) bird (F-4 Phantom) had a nose steering problem. It had a tendency to wander and not track straight.

Maintenance fixed it, my dad met with the WK (Dad brought us with him) so the he could do a taxi check and verify it was fixed.

WK asked who we were, dad introduced us. I got to sit in the back seat of the F-4, cool not the first time I sat in the seat. Then I get a head set, told what not to touch and then the canopy shut over me. WTF is going on here? We taxied out to the runway and the WK made several high speed taxi runs on the runway to verify the nose steering was fixed. Guess that means I became a WIZO at age 14.

Flew back seat in the OV-10 on an incentive ride, guess I’m also an Air FAC. Took the stick and flew from the backseat of the F-15 on an incentive ride, guess I’m also a F-15 pilot.

So I was a WIZO, Air FAC, and F-15 Pilot, guess I need to have my DD-214 amended to reflect that. Plus add Physiological Technician, since I flew during HALO training missions and assisted in the hook up of the jumpers to O2 etc.

Damn then I can run for office and claim USAF Multi-Tool, and since I spent over 17 of an almost 23 year career in AFSOC. I can add Special Forces to my line up. That would make me a USAF Special Forces Multi-Tool Super Troop.

Oh hell who am I kidding I was just an Aircrew Life Support/Aircrew Flight Equipment Technician that got to do a lot of cool stuff that I listed above. But it didn’t change what my job was.

A lot of you guys are not zeroed on his story. He claims that a few
weeks after arriving at his first duty station in ROK, he was pulled for a composite deployment of approx 30 helicopter crews (and
helicopters too I guess) to the RVNAF base at Marble Mountain
from February to May 1974 where they flew support for the ARVN.
How could an RA composite unit augment the South Vietnamese
in early ’74 with the Paris Treaty conditions and the War Powers
Act in effect? That’s his actual wierd story!

Hack Stone

Black Ops. They were brought in country to rob the Bank of Hanoi, then things went south, and the government disavowed any knowledge of the operation. Today, not wanted by the voters, he survives as a political candidate. If you are easily fooled, if no one else gave you a campaign sticker, and if you can find your way to the voting booth, maybe you can vote for Steve Slaton.

SFC D

This ad paid for by the Steve Slaton for representative campaign, Hannibal Lecter, treasurer.

“I’m Steve Slaton, and I imagined this message”.

rgr769

Sounds like a plot to a movie. Were there gold bars stolen from the bank? How about an aged POW rescue?

Sandman

As a former 68J (Aircraft Armament / Missile Systems Repair) I worked on Cobras and can tell you NO crew chief /Armament / ground personal would be in the gunner’s seat of the Cobra during flight. That is for the qualified pilots, which of course are Warrants or Officers.

Daisy Cutter

Steve Slaton lives in Show Low, AZ. He used to live in Snowflake, AZ. That should tell you something alone.

Daisy Cutter

The candidates’ wives are bickering over on MP.

I would love to see a cat fight here on TAH.

Is it wrong for me to want that?

The problem with math is that it’s well….math. The numbers don’t lie…he’s too young to have been there.

It doesn’t change the fact he volunteered to serve when others didn’t..and he did that honorably and kept those helicopters flying…

And then he took a shit on that service with his words and action….what we don’t need in public service are those kinds of words and actions…we already have far too much of that…

Reminds me of an old joke:

crafty
KoB

Speaking of math…or numbers in general… The Military Phony Post about The lying, embellishing POS known as Steven Hawthorne Slaton is now at number 3 on a Google Foo Search. You paying attention Steve Slaton? Don’t go by the number of comments on these sites. Admin used to be able to tell how many hits (visits) the sites have on a daily basis. To go from no presence at all on the inherwebz 2 days ago, to number 3. Not a bad day’s work. The more hits that come in and the more times the name of such a lying embellishing POS such as you, Steve Slaton, is typed, the higher up the list goes the posting of what a lying, embellishing POS Steve Slaton is. Notice that your sockpuppet (wife) has not shown up here at all, Steve Slaton, and she only had one post on the Military Phony Post that revealed to the word what a lying embellishing POS Steve Slaton is. I wonder is Mrs. Steve Slaton is questioning what else Steve Slaton has lied to her about. I would not like to be in Steve Slaton’s shoes when Mrs. Slaton comes to the full realization what a lying, embellishing POS her husband, Steve Slaton is. Who knows, Mrs. Steve Slaton may be the FIRST (ht2 Tox) to call for a deployment of the Vaunted TAH As(s)teroid of Insults on the lying embellishing POS that is Steve Slaton. And the former friends and customers of Steve Slaton would most probably give a SECOND and an AYE for the motion made for said deployment on Steve Slaton.

Karma is a cast iron bitch, Steve Slaton, and she is a fixin’ to bite Steve Slaton right on the ass.

3rdOps

His age does fit because he claims he was part of an RA TDY
to RVN in early ’74 when only contractors, SF advisors, CIA
and Air America were operating! His puzzle piece doesn’t
fit the historical puzzle. And all the other gigs on his paperwork
too. Who has Nixon Vietnamese (should be Vietnamization)
Program on their 214?

rgr769

I got Vietnamized twice. It ain’t in my paperwork.

Hack Stone thought that Nixon Vietnamese was the Wednesday Lunch Special at The Saigon Cafe.

Hack Stone just finished reading his “manifesto”. In addition to the accusations of Stolen Valor, Candidate Steve Slaton needs to invest in some SpellCheck Software. But he did write “as to” in his rebuttal, so he is definitely All Points Logistics material. Wonder if he has a mailbox door.

Daisy Cutter

You’d need a spell checker that covers Hangul. Otherwise “Qritran Proviendance” would get by the spell-check goalie. Stevie may want to invest in Rosetta Stone as well, because there are some serious linguistic violations a happenin’.

rgr769

Wait, Hack’s wife handles investments now?

She sure does. Franklin Mint Limited Edition Commemorative Plates and Beanie Babies. We are expect a windfall in the next quarter.

A review of the duel records by the National Personnel Records Center concludes that Slaton’s version does not match the official…” Didn’t know that the NPRC kept up with all of the duels. *sigh* Aaron Burr was unavailable for comment.

Obviously the vast chicken wing conspiracy is not limited to just Hack Stone and the Vaunted TAH Weekend Open Thread FIRST Competition.

Blaster

Learn to be a helicopter mechanic in 12 weeks,, impressive,,,,and scary!!

rgr769

Including learning to fly rotor wing aircraft.

Claw

What was even scarier was at the time, an additional three or four weeks of “finishing school” was offered at Fort Eustis for the helicopter mechanics school, and the graduates came out as a Specialist Five (E-5), otherwise known as “Shake and Bakes”. But we needn’t worry about this guy being a Shake&Bake. He didn’t make Spec5 until just four months before he ETS’d. What a waste of a stripe that could/should have went to somebody else who was planning to re-enlist.

However, in my experience with them, they did not become Crew Chiefs or Door Gunners on flight status. They were kept strictly on the ground as shop foremen or permanent CQ’s.
